The coldest weather of the winter so far is on its way. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
Exactly when it arrives is still open to a bit of doubt, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
but it will arrive come next week. Quite a shock to the system! | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
Before that, there's a risk I'll sound like a broken record, with yet | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
more wet weather sweeping across the country from an active frontal | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
system charging in off the Atlantic, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
as we've seen for week after week after week. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
So, that wet weather pushing its way north-eastwards | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
in the direction of Scotland, exactly where we don't want it. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
For the rest of the UK, things will brighten up, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
with plenty of sunshine through the afternoon and just a few showers. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
But let's concentrate on that rain across Scotland. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
Not just rain, of course, a lot of snow up over the high ground, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
but it's the rain of most concern. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
I'm afraid we could well be seeing scenes like these again, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
sent in from Weather Watchers over the last couple of days. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
A very real probability of further flooding, an amber | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
warning in force from the Met Office for parts of eastern Scotland. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
Be prepared for further disruption. Cold and bleak. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
Further south, yes, some sunshine, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Northern Ireland, England and Wales having a bright afternoon. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
It'll be chilly in that wind, a few showers scudding across, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
but a bit of sunshine | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
makes all the difference, doesn't it? We haven't seen much recently. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Temperatures at sixes and sevens, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
so definitely a bit of an edge to that wind. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
As we go into the evening and night, as temperatures fall away, I think | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
ice could be an issue, particularly across central and northern areas. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
Further wet weather across the north-east of Scotland. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
The weather front just stalls there. Further snow up over the high ground. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
We're going to see clusters of showers moving across | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
the country during Friday. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Cold enough for snow over high ground | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
in northern England and Northern Ireland. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Most places will see some sunshine away from the far north-east. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
Cold in the north, milder in the south. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
Now, as we approach the weekend, low pressure remains in control, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
and that means further rain | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
and the very real probability of further ongoing flooding issues. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
The detail of the weekend's weather is pretty elusive, I have to say, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
but we will see further rain at times, the risk of more flooding | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
and then that change I mentioned, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
because we are going to see cold air surging southwards. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
How quickly it happens is, well, a little bit open to doubt, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
but it will arrive in the end come the early part of next week. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
Winter as we used to know it. It is going to be a dramatic change, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
a dramatic change for nature, as well, because of course | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
we've seen spring bulbs across the country. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
It's been that warm through December. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
I think some of those bulbs might look a bit miserable come next week, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
with some snowfall in the forecast. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Of course, it's been so wet, we've had all the flooding, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
many fields covered in water. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Well, some of those fields might transform themselves | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
into ice rinks come next week, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
because temperatures are going to take something of a nose dive. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
Well, colder weather flooding south, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
behind the jet stream, which is also going to head southwards. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
At least with the jet to the south of us, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
the jet carrying the rain-bearing weather fronts, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
it does look like being drier, much drier than it has been recently, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
though there will be some wintry showers. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
But the jet stream is incredibly contorted, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
twists and turns in the jet all the way round the northern hemisphere. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
This sort of blocked pattern means that if you're stuck in a cold | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
area, it's likely to stay cold for some considerable time, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
if you're stuck in a warm area, it'll stay warm for some considerable time. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
But it does look as if we're going to be on the cold side | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
of the jet, so through next week cold and probably staying cold, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
widespread frost, wintry showers, too. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
But, yes, I must stress, it will be drier than it has been recently. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
How long does that last? | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
Well, Helen Willetts will update you on all the details again tomorrow. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
Your mum really needs to come in and see Doctor | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
so we can give her a free prescription. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36 |
