Hello. Last night, John talked to you about the potential for | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
some drier weather into next week. That potential is still with us. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
But, for the here and now, once again the rain today has left severe | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
flood warnings out across parts of eastern Scotland. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
That means a danger to life. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
This is the floodline number. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
There are numerous flood warnings in force | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
as well as the severe flood warnings. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
And still the amber warnings for further rain to come overnight | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
and through Friday from the Met Office. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
As well as that, it is likely to turn to snow over the hills 200-300m | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
and it will turn pretty icy with temperatures close to freezing. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
We could also have a smattering of snow | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
for the hills of Northern Ireland, northern England, southern Scotland | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
and that's a little too close for comfort | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
to the central lowlands for the Friday morning rush. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
So it could be an awkward mix of rain and sleet and snow. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
Quite slippery conditions, potentially, a real taste of winter. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
Yet, still the rain falls across the east and north of Scotland. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
Further south across England and Wales, more likely that we'll | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
have some hail showers, some heavy showers around with blustery winds. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
Not as windy as it was during the day on Thursday, and those showers | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
should move through allowing some sunshine in between. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
Eventually, we should see things drying up | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
a little for Aberdeenshire, Angus, Tayside as well, as that rain | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
becomes stuck across Caithness, Sutherland and into Orkney as well. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
Still that cold strong wind, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
still the potential for snow even at lower levels in western areas here. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
And it's a cold day, only 2 for Glasgow. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
We talked about snow, it's no surprise, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
perhaps double figures in the south. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
Then, as we move into the weekend, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
the devil's in the detail, as John mentioned last night. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
This low pressure meanders in across the UK. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
It's where it comes to settle is | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
where we'll see longer spells of rain. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
But with low pressure across us, all of us will see yet more rain | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
over the weekend and that does pose the risk of further flooding, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
particularly for those areas seeing some sizeable amounts of rainfall. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
The ground is so saturated at the moment, it doesn't take much. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
So you saw all those winds dragging that rain north through Saturday. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Into Sunday, it's still with us. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
The potential for some snow over the hills. It's still pretty cold air. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
The winds around the periphery of that area of low pressure | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
will be strong to gale force as well. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Still around in the north on Sunday night into Monday | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
and then we turn our attention to the potential for this | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
low pressure to skip close by to southern areas on Monday. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
Some question mark as to how far north that is going to come | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
and obviously that has implications for our wind and rain. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
But, thereafter, there's still the hint that the jetstream will | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
move further southwards so that will drag the areas of low pressure, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
the rainmakers, further south, we think, across many parts of France | 0:02:33 | 0:02:38
towards Italy across the Alps and perhaps Iberia as well. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
However, as that happens, we get into the true cold air as well. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
So, a hint of cold weather anyway for the next three or four days, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
with an ongoing risk of frost and ice. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
But we could see even colder weather next week, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
which will keep those weather fronts at bay as well. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
A blast of Arctic air, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
what it should feel like, really, through the middle of the winter. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
We've got a blocking high-pressure system up towards the north | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
and east and that will push those low pressures away from our shores. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
However, there is a question mark for later next week, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
just a question mark at this stage, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
that there could be some windier weather | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
and therefore wetter weather coming back in. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
But at the moment, it is looking notably colder | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
with a risk of frost, ice, wintry showers around | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
and for a time, at least, drier than it has been recently. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
But, again, it's a case of watch this space. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
All the warnings are on the website. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
