Hello there, some of you open up the working week on a very stormy note. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Imogen, the latest named storm to hit to head our way is with us. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
But compared to previous storms this is following a slightly | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
different track, it's further south, the jet stream is further south, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
and that means while the core of the low-pressure system may | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
be across Scotland with the lightest of the winds, on the southern flank | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
of it, its southern half of the UK bearing the brunt of the impact. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
So, from light winds in the north, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
the further south you go the stronger winds are on Monday. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
Touching 60, 70, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
maybe 80mph around the coast of southern England | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
and South Wales, it's here we've got a Met Office "be prepared" | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
amber warning in place. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Lots of impact on travel, potential power problems as well. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
Not just strong winds, but whipping up some very high and rough seas. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
Dangerous conditions around the north coasts of Devon and Cornwall | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
and also to the Isles of Scilly in particular. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
We could see wave heights of up to 40 metres. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
To go with those strong damaging | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
and potentially destructive winds across England and Wales, frequent | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
heavy thundery showers through the day, bit of sunshine between. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
Much quieter conditions further north. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Fewer showers and some across Scotland will stay dry | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
and reasonably sunny all day long. After a frosty and icy start. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
A cold-feeling day, especially | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
where you've got those winds howling throughout. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
Now, the winds remain strong across England | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
and Wales at least as we go through Monday night into Tuesday, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
abating a little bit compared to what they have been through the day. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
Showers, outbreaks of rain - they start to become more | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
focused between Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
and that's going to be the dividing line between chilly air and | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
colder conditions to the north where we'll see frost and ice | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
to begin Tuesday. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
But as Imogen pushes its way off into Scandinavia, the northerly | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
winds will become dominant to the north of this weather front which | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
will edge its way southwards through the day. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
Bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Still a few heavy showers towards the south, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
maybe touching gale force around some western areas throughout still, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
but there will be some sunshine either side of that weather front | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
and not a bad afternoon across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
but some temperatures only around four or five degrees. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Now, Tuesday night into Wednesday, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
that weather front clears the south coast, it opens the door to | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
northerly winds and pushes the cold air in across all of us. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
Wednesday, potentially the quietest day of the week. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Still some strong winds across the north-east of Scotland with some | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
shows around, those will be wintry in nature | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
and we could see the dregs of an old weather front towards | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
the south-west bringing cloud and outbreaks of rain | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
but in between, most, after a frosty start, will see some dry sunny | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
weather but rather cool conditions throughout. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Now the jet stream is further south by the time we get to this | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
stage, so low-pressure systems look likely to | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
head into France rather than our shores | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
but just be wary, they could get very close to the south coast so | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
always bear that in mind across the south for the second half | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
of the week. But at the moment, Thursday, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
again still fairly light winds | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
a lot of cloud around. Some old weather fronts bring in a few | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
spots of rain or drizzle | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
but the sun will break through here and there and many will be dry. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
As the jet stream tries to edge further northwards | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
into Friday it brings a deep area of low pressure our way but it | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
doesn't get too far north, it stays centred across England and Wales, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
it looks like. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
So the northern flank of it - cold air, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
strong easterly winds may be bringing cloud and drizzle to | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
eastern Scotland, best of the brighter breaks further west. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Further south you are, most likely to see outbreaks of rain, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
wetter conditions and given the fact the ground is | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
saturated, flooding we have seen of late, that is | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
something we'll certainly have to keep a close eye on. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
So the jet stream is trying to push further north into the weekend, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
but it's a half-hearted effort | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
and what that means is low-pressure systems will push towards us | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
one after the other but scoot down in towards France | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
clipping southern and western areas in particular with wind and rain. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
Colder conditions the further north. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
Always be a little bit of snow on the northern flank of it. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
Into next week, the jet stream does look, though, it will push north | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
again bringing low-pressure systems, more wet and windy weather, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
but something drier towards the south of the UK. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
And John Hammond will keep you updated on that tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
Not so long ago, you'd just beat a rug for a good time. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
After this, we can do the other carpet in the lounge! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
Since then, things have perked up. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
Oh, my God! | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
We're going on holiday. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Are you ready? Yeah! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:44
See one family live through a spare-time revolution... | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
You've turned into a WAG! | 0:03:48 | 0:03:49
..from "no time" to "me time". | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52 |
