Hello there. You may have heard on the news | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
that a major hurricane passed | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
close by to Bermuda during the day on Thursday, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
packing winds in excess of 100 miles an hour, so the biggest one, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
the most major hurricane, we've seen to this close to Bermuda | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
in about 13 years. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
Why am I talking about this? | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
Although it's not heading | 0:00:18 | 0:00:18
for our shores, it will impact | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
somewhat in our weather. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
It'll throw, if you like, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and interesting twist | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
into the computer models. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Let's come back | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
to what's happening here in the UK now | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
where we've had that easterly wind | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
for so long now and it's a really chilly wind | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
throwing lots more showers into the north. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
The lack of wind Friday morning | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
in the south means an early frost | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
and patchy fog potentially, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
but here a lot of dry and settled weather | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
before rain comes | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
into the south-west later | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
and indeed the south-east. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
We're starting to lose the easterly wind | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
in the south, so it'll start | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
to feel less cold, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
but it's going to be another day or two | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
that it's with us across | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
the northern half of the country. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
We've got rain coming into the south-east | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
through Friday evening, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
slipping its way northwards, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
really intensifying wet weather | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
for eastern Scotland and heavy showers | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
moving into the south and west. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
So there are warnings in force, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
do check the website, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
but it might be that we're seeing | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
those downpours in western areas, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
but central and eastern areas | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
have a pretty decent day on Saturday. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
We've lost the easterly wind, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
it'll feel quite warm, 16 to 18, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
but not across Scotland where we've got that - | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
certainly northern Scotland - | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
that easterly wind at near gale force | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
and those heavy showers in the south and west, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
which then become more frequent | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
and indeed more widespread as we move | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
into Sunday across the rest of England and Wales. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
That weather front is moving out | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
of the way of Scotland, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
so we lose that nagging easterly wind here | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
at long last and perhaps | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
some drier weather Sunday but, as you can see, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
showers are in the forecast elsewhere, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
not all the time, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
but there will be some really intense downpours. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
And that low pressure, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
well, that hangs around for some time | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
as we move into the new part of the week. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
You can see high pressure | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
just trying to nudge in and behind me Nicole. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
But we'll come back to that. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
Monday looks like another day | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
of sunny spells and showers. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:54
There's that rain moving away to the north, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
more showers coming into the west, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
some sunshine in between, | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
lighter winds, so feeling quite pleasant, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
14 to 18 potentially, and it's October. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
Now, by the end of Tuesday, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
we've changed air streams again, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
so we've lost that southerly wind | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
and we pick up the Atlantic north-westerly, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
so it will start to feel cooler again. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
So we've got that band | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
of really quite intense showery rain | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16
moving through and then sunny spells, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
but only 12s and 13s generally, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
perhaps 16 in London, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:22
just because we started the day | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
with that warmer air. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
And then it's all to play for, really, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
as we go to the latter part of the week. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
There's that low pressure moving away, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
high pressure starting to build in | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
and Nicole just throwing | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
that warm air northwards, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
so it will interrupt | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
the jet stream - | 0:02:38 | 0:02:39
that's the fast-moving ribbon of air | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
in the upper atmosphere | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
that that drives our weather systems in. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
So the low pressure slowly migrates | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
a little bit further north early next week. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
The high-pressure moving into southern areas, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
a lot of dry and settled weather. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
We saw the warmth coming through | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
earlier in the week, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
but there will be | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
some chilly nights, that said. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
That's because our jet stream at that stage is throwing those | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
low pressures across the northern half of the country. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
However, we've got Nicole sitting out in the Atlantic, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
a fly in the ointment, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
causing us a little bit of a headache and it looks at this stage | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
as if she'll buckle that jet steam and allow low pressures | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
to move northwards, but build high-pressure in across the UK | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
but there's just the chance with that northerly | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
that we'll see low pressure moving into eastern areas | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
and those could give us | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
some quite wet weather here. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
So some uncertainty later in the week, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
but it does look as if we'll see | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
some fine days in the south | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
and some chilly nights. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30 |
