Yesterday, I was pointing out | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
how peculiar this October is turning out to be meteorologically, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
dominated by easterly winds where normally westerlies rule the roost. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
Now, temporarily, the westerlies are in charge, and they're | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
pushing this cold front across the country, a band of showery rain. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
Behind that, sunnier skies but also lower temperatures, and along this | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
little frontal band we've got some fairly frequent and heavy showers. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
And it's cold enough for a bit of the white stuff, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
up over the tops of the Scottish mountains, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
and a chilly and blustery wind not helping the feel of things. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Ten to 12 degrees in the afternoon for Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
A little line of showers pushing into north-west England, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
as well, so for the Manchester area, for example, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
not feeling very pleasant, with frequent showers. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
The odd shower further south, towards the west coast of Wales, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
maybe the far south-west, but a lot of sunshine | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
after the early showery rain has cleared from the south-east. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
But temperatures actually several degrees lower than they have | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
been recently. Now, we're going to go out into the Atlantic. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
I pointed out Nicole yesterday. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
It's been spinning around for a couple of weeks now - a hurricane. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
It won't be a hurricane over the next few days, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
but it will influence our weather indirectly. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
As it surges northwards, it carries a lot of energy and helps to build | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
this downstream ridge closer to home, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
that ridge of high pressure benefitting the more western | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
parts of the UK, where the weather will settle down, whereas closest to | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
the east coast we've got that area of low pressure, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
and that'll keep the showers going here. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
So a bit of a west/east split, actually, through Wednesday. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
West is best for sunshine underneath that area of high pressure, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
just the odd shower here, plenty of sunshine and lighter winds. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Further east, the blustery wind and further showers, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
particularly near that east coast, keeping it cool, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
just 12 degrees in Norwich, but everywhere, actually, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
temperatures will be lower than they have been over the last few days. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
Now, overnight, under clear skies out west, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
that does mean from midweek onwards, really, as the map turns blue, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
we're expecting some frost and some fog around as well first | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
thing in the morning, so be aware of that. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Further east, with that cloud and that breeze, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
we will avoid most of the fog and the frost, but we'll continue with | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
that showery theme, particularly towards the eastern coastal areas. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
And that's really the way we end the week, with that east/west split and | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
some of those showers drifting into the east coast of Scotland, perhaps. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
Western areas again, after early fog and frost, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
seeing the best of the sunshine, but wherever you are, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
temperatures will not be spectacularly high. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Those easterlies are back in charge. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Normally, the jet stream meanders out of America and across the | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
Atlantic like this, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
and it generates weather systems which push in from the west, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
carrying bands of rain, but at the moment, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
it looks like that jet stream is going to split again, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
as it has done so frequently through this October, and that's | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
barring these rain-bearing weather systems coming in off the Atlantic. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Instead, they're being fended off by the easterly winds through | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
next weekend, and those easterlies look like being in charge | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
for some considerable time. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
There's a question mark about whether fronts will get into | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
the far south-west, carrying milder air. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
It does look as if those easterlies will continue to bring chilly | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
air in from the Continent. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
But we're only in late October, so the easterlies are not that cold. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
If we fast-forward to late November, it would be a very different matter. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
We would be in for a particularly cold spell, with the threat of snow. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
But we're not, so that's good news if you don't like cold weather. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
Into early next week, that jet stream looks like staying blocked. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
We keep those chilly easterly winds, though not too cold, hopefully, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
and that threat of rain, albeit temporarily, in the far south-west. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
That's it. We'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
