Hello, there. On Wednesday, many parts of the UK | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
started to see the weather calm down once again. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
A lot of dry weather around, a fair bit of sunshine at times too, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
but it was a different story on the east coast of England once again. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
These high seas | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
captured by our weather watchers | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
whipped up in Scarborough | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
and on the north Norfolk coast | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
in Cromer, battering the pier here. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
Strong to gale-force winds, in fact, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
through the day, frequent showers, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
especially later in the day. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
It's all caused by this area of low pressure. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
That's going to just linger around | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
to the southeast over the next couple of days, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
but it's really high pressure dominating for most, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
which means more in the way of cool, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
at times frosty nights, as we'll see, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
to start Thursday morning, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
but a lot of dry, bright weather by day. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
The mist clears, lots of sunshine. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Lighter winds compared with Wednesday, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
so many western areas may feel a little bit warmer, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
even though the temperatures are nothing to write home about. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
There will be varying amounts of cloud | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
across England and eastern Wales in particular | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
through the day. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
Just threatening the odd isolated shower. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
Greatest chance of showers remain down eastern parts, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
closest to that area of low pressure. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Here the breeze is at its strongest, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
but even that a little bit lighter | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
than it was on Wednesday afternoon. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
Still remains, that breeze in place | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
as we go through Thursday night into Friday, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
a few coastal showers. But at the same time, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
you'll also notice a bit more cloud | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
in Northern Ireland, Western Scotland. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
Outbreaks of rain spreading here. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
In between, though, away from towns and cities, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
clear skies, some mist | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
and a chance of frost once again. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
That's because here you're under that little area | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
of high pressure. Either side of it, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
we've got some weather fronts to the northwest of the UK. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Still that low pressure. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
Becoming less dominant, but still noticeable | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
towards the southeast of the country, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
so I'm afraid East Anglia, southeast, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
still the chance of one or two showers, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
and still that breeze. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
Most, though, light winds. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
Pleasant enough in the afternoon sunshine, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
once morning mist and fog has cleared. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Rain, though, will linger throughout the day. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
Highlands and Islands of Scotland especially. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
Temperatures, generally speaking, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
not far off what we'll see on Thursday, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
which takes us into the weekend. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
Well, what we have at the moment is some very warm air | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
to the east of the United States. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
That will help to fire up a strong jet steam. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
The blocking high, though, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
splits that jet stream in two as it approaches us. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
It's the southern portion, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
the strongest portion, which is of interest, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
because it starts to develop this area of low pressure. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
As that develops, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
an easterly wind develops for the UK, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
as that low pressure | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
squeezes against the high in Scandinavia. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
Like we saw the other week, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
easterly winds will start to dominate. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
It's getting colder and colder, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
that easterly wind, as we go through Saturday. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
Still a few showers down the east. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Most of the places, though, dry and bright. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Best of the sunshine the further west you are. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
But the breeze picks up even further | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
as that low pressure deepens, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
more in the Bay of Biscay, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
and edges closer towards us. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
So expect more cloud. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
The showers, across eastern areas to begin with, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
will get that little bit further west. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Many western areas still dry and bright at this stage, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
but just notice, creeping closer, the threat of some rain. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
This probably opens up the biggest uncertainty | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
through the forecast period - | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
just whether this low pressure system, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
as it clears away, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
throws any weather fronts in our direction. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
So Monday's forecast, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
probably the most uncertain at the moment. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
We've still got an easterly wind | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
whichever way you look at it. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
Western areas, particularly northwest, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
probably driest and brightest, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
but that chance of rain pushing in towards the south. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
If we look at the star of next week, we've got that low pressure clearing | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
away to the south, but still the risks of those weather fronts. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
But all computer models are starting to show signs | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
that that will actually go away through the week. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
So, as we progress through the week, this high pressure dominates. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
Its position changes, though, pushes further south, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
so England and Wales most likely to be dry and bright by day, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
but some overnight mist, some fog and some frost. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
Then, as the jet stream strengthens further out of North America, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
we could start to see things starting to turn back | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
to low pressure in the northwest, which brings the greatest threat | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
of rain later next week, to northern and western parts of Scotland. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
We'll keep you updated, of course, over the coming days. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
