18/02/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello, this is the forecast that looks

a little bit further ahead than the others, and as such,

it encompasses not one, but two weekends.

Next weekend will be

a little bit colder than this weekend.

Next weekend we find ourselves

in a spring-like mood

after several days of mild weather,

and that's certainly staying

that way through this weekend.

Temperatures in double figures,

the breeze starting to pick up.

Even milder weather, though, is

on the way at the start of next week.

For Monday, temperatures

will be heading up. How high?

Well, it's just possible somewhere could get to...

Wait for it.

..17 Celsius.

It's a possibility on Monday,

not a guarantee,

but certainly very mild for

the time of year for all of us.

Not hugely sunny though,

as we'll see in a moment.

This is the big picture for Saturday.

The reason for the mild air,

if you follow the isobars

coming from well to the south-west

of the UK, the breeze picking up

over the weekend, pumping that mild air in,

but it's fairly moist air,

so it's coming with a fair amount of cloud.

We have a weather front

moving through during Saturday,

it means a wet start in Northern Ireland,

parts of Scotland, brightening up

for the afternoon, a few blustery showers

though coming into north-west Scotland.

Where does the rain go next?

Into northern England, North Wales.

South of that - misty, murky start to the day,

but brightening up into the afternoon,

and more especially in south-east England,

temperatures at around 10 to 13 degrees.

Going out on Saturday evening,

this very weak weather front

moving south through England and Wales,

only very light rain associated with it.

Still blustery showers though

in north-west Scotland.

On Sunday, fair amount of cloud again,

just a few sunny breaks.

Another system approaching western areas,

in the hills you may encounter some light rain,

but some outbreaks coming back

to Northern Ireland and western Scotland,

breezier across the board on Sunday.

But again, this feed of really mild air,

we're going to waft

even milder air our way for Monday,

perhaps even into the start of Tuesday as well.

And it is on Monday there's the potential

for that 16 or 17 degrees.

But this is the map for Monday -

plenty of cloud, patchy rain in the west,

heavier rain in north-west Scotland,

a few brighter breaks to the east

of high ground, and it's that,

along with a down-sloping Foehn effect wind

that may in a few spots east of higher ground

bring temperatures up to 16 or 17 Celsius.

The vast majority will of course

fall short of that but this is still very mild

for the time of year.

That's after a warm front has gone through,

but as we go into Tuesday,

there is a weak cold front

spreading its way southwards,

so temperatures are going to come down

a bit on Tuesday. It is still breezy,

there is plenty of cloud around.

May just see some further outbreaks

of rain in north-west Scotland.

You'll notice those temperatures are a bit low,

and we'll certainly notice that,

especially in the breeze across

the northern half of the UK.

A lot of uncertainty about

what's going to happen midweek

with this area of low pressure -

timing, depth of the low pressure,

how windy it's going to be across northern parts,

low chance of severe gales,

need to watch that and some rain coming in.

And for the rest of the week, well,

with these low pressure systems going through,

warm fronts and cold fronts, spells of wet weather,

brighter interludes in between,

but it will alternate

between somewhat colder weather,

then milder weather,

then back to colder weather.

But next weekend it does look -

with low pressure close by -

fairly unsettled,

on the windy side and colder

than this weekend, but not cold,

and certainly not as cold

as it was last weekend,

just temperatures closer to normal

for the time of year.

So that's how it's looking,

two weekends of weather,

a little bit different,

VERY different from last weekend.
