05/04/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. Before we look ahead, we'll look back at what happened in March

because the Met Office have done all the number crunching

on the statistics and it turns out that for the UK as a whole,

it was the fifth mildest March on record.

And for the south-east of England it was the joint mildest on record.

Pretty good temperature for some of us,

in terms of rainfall it was around the average.

Those records go back to 1910.

It might start chilly for southern counties,

but a bright start,

make the most of the morning sunshine

because cloud will drift south during the day.

Hanging on to sunny spells

in the South-west and North-east.

Most places, in spite of cloud, will be dry.

Just the north-west quadrant

might see a few spots of rain.

11 degrees in Glasgow, similar in Belfast,

13 or 14 for Cardiff and London.

Through the evening, cloud in eastern England

might thicken enough for some rain,

and still a bit of rain in the North-west,

but most places will be fine and dry

with a fair bit of cloud

keeping temperatures up a little bit,

around 7 or 8 degrees,

fairly typical to start the day on Thursday.

So it may be a bit cloudy first thing on Thursday.

May keep a bit of cloud into the afternoon,

not much rain to speak of.

There will be some for western coast and hills,

but many places will have

another fine and dry day

with variable amounts of cloud,

a little bit of sunshine at times.

Temperatures again around 11 or 12 degrees

for Glasgow and Belfast.

Could go as high as 15

in the south-eastern corner.

High pressure is in charge of our weather

over the next few days and will stick around

towards the end of the week as well,

keeping things fine and settled.

Just a question mark about cloud amounts.

But probably breaks in the cloud,

so maybe a chilly start to the day on Friday

where you have those breaks.

But another decent day for most places,

dry virtually everywhere.

There'll be variable cloud and spells of sunshine.

Temperatures again in that range

of 10 to 14 or 15 degrees.

As we head towards the start of the weekend,

high pressure is still with us,

but it's beginning to drift

towards the near continent.

But for the start of the weekend,

it will still be the dominant force

driving our weather,

so again it might be a chilly start,

but it'll be a decent day for most places,

light winds, patchy cloud,

sunny spells and it's dry once again

pretty much everywhere.

11 degrees in Glasgow, 13 or so in Cardiff,

up to around 15 in the London area.

Signs of a change as we head towards Sunday.

This weather front will creep into the North-west,

thickening up the cloud,

maybe bringing rain with it.

But in the South and East, we'll see sunshine,

and with a southerly breeze, it'll turn quite warm,

up to the high teens, maybe low 20s on Sunday

in the South and East.

But there is a sign of change.

It's this weather front which will eventually

make its way south across the UK.

As it does so, there's cooler air

behind that cold front,

so it will spread the colder air

down across the UK

in the early part of the new week.

It looks like the colder air will spill down

across pretty much all parts as we go through the week.

But for the weekend, still high pressure in charge.

It's drifting towards the near continent

and will pull in some warm air at least for a time.

But as it pulls away and low pressure starts to take over

into the early part of next week, things will turn more unsettled.

We'll drag down this north-westerly wind,

it's from a cold direction,

so temperatures will drop away across the board.

That'll be a shock to the system as it turns quite a good deal colder

and it will turn more unsettled as well.

It'd be quite windy,

accentuating the chilly feel to things.

There'll be rain around as well,

maybe not just rain over the hills in the north of the UK,

it could be cold enough for a bit of snow.
