The Easter weekend is almost upon us and, as predicted, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
it's not exactly looking ideal. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
We're certainly expecting quite a bit of cloud, the possibility | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
of some rain and it's also going to be on the cool side. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:16
In fact, by the time we get to Saturday, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
winds coming straight out of the Arctic. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
We're not expecting Arctic weather, but it is going to be chilly. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
So Good Friday, a fair bit of cloud across the UK. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
You can see where the blobs of rain are, affecting many western | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
and northern areas of the UK, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
probably the best of the weather across the south coast here. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
Looking out to sea, we could have some sunshine, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
showers in Scotland and it's going to be a cool day. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Maybe 16 in London because it's a bigger city. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
But for most of us around 10 to 13 degrees. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
So a fresh day on the way on Good Friday. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Then through Good Friday into Saturday, the weather fronts, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
which bring all the cloud and spots of rain, move across the country. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
Behind the weather front, the winds swing direction and we start | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
to import colder air coming in from the north. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
You can see the temperatures much lower already across Scotland. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
So the colder air on Saturday originates all the way from | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
here, from the Arctic. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
By the time it reaches our shores, it's not that cold any more. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
Let's call it cool. So quite a fresh day on the way on Saturday. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
But, actually, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
probably the best day of the Easter weekend because there will be | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
a lot of sunshine around, it's just not going to be warm at all. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
In fact, across Scotland, in Glasgow, for example, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
temperatures not higher than around 9 degrees during the daytime. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
So on the nippy side. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Probably lower than we'd like to have it this time of the year. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Here's Easter Day. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
High pressure close to south-western areas of the UK. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
So perhaps Cornwall, Devon, most of the West Country, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
the southern counties enjoying the best of the sunshine on Easter Day. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
More northern areas here, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
looks like a bit more cloud because there is a weather front. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
That weather front's going to hang around through Easter Monday | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
as well. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
So high pressure, a weak one, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
is never too far away and that basically means that | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
the further south-west you are, the better the weather will be. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
Closer to the east coast where we have lows running down from | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
the north, close to the North Sea, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
that's where we're going to see the more unsettled weather. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
On Tuesday, the high pressure tries to squeeze in itself across | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
most of the UK. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
So it does looks as though the southern two thirds of the | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
country are looking dry. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
This is very uncertain, by the way. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Whereas northern areas possibly getting a little bit of rainfall. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
This rain, in fact, could be here, could be a little bit further south. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
Now, look what happens as we head into the middle of next week. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
A more substantial area of high pressure here. Low pressure there. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
When you get this sort of set-up, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
the winds keep on coming in from that north-westerly direction. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
So the weather is not changing, the air's not about to warm up. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
Still those measly temperatures of 9 in the north, maybe 14 in the south. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:39
And, to be honest, into next week, looking at it schematically, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
we still have that low here, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
the high pressure there and that cooler air stream. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
We've been looking at this for a few days now. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
There is a hint that a little bit later on next week, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
perhaps this high pulls away. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
That's not great news because it may also mean that the low pressures | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
have more room, if you like, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
to push through the UK and bring us slightly more unsettled weather. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
But it is very uncertain. Why is the forecast so uncertain? | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
When the jet stream is very weak, very slack, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
we don't really get much movement in the atmosphere. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
It's very difficult to predict where the highs and lows are going to be. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
So, to summarise it, very briefly, next week northern areas are | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
likely to catch showers, maybe some showers in the east too. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
Always the best of the weather across the south-west. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
Thanks for watching and have a great Easter. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
