07/05/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. If you're tuning in to this ten-day forecast

because you are desperately waiting for some rain,

well, I do have some for you,

but not until the end of the forecast.

You have a lot of dry weather

to sit through first of all.

The weather front that brought some rain

in southern areas on Saturday

is now clearing away, leaving all of us

with high pressure in charge

of the scene on Sunday.

However, we will have a keen northerly wind,

so that's going to bring some extra cloud

into northern and eastern Scotland,

northern and eastern parts of England,

slightly murky and even drizzly at times.

The best of the sunshine will be found

further south and west, so that's where we'll see

the highest of the temperatures.

One or two places could get quite close

to 20 degrees.

Now, Sunday night is another quiet one -

a lot of dry weather, some clear spells.

Still some extra cloud feeding in

on the northerly flow,

particularly in eastern areas,

whereas out west,

where you have some clear spells,

it could get cold enough for a touch of frost,

particularly out in the countryside.

We start the new working week, then,

on a quiet note.

High pressure still with us,

centred up here, to the north-west

of the British Isles - notice, though,

the white lines, the isobars,

fairly tightly squeezed.

That shows that we'll have a keen north or north-easterly wind,

making it feel fairly cool for the start of the week,

but it will still be largely dry.

This wind, fairly strong,

and bringing some fairly cool air

right across the country -

with it, some fairly large areas of cloud,

but the best of the sunshine

will again be found in western areas.

Temperatures, though, across the board,

a few degrees down -

9 degrees there in Aberdeen,

perhaps a high of 15 in Plymouth.

We will lose the strength of the wind, though,

through Monday night into Tuesday -

the white lines, the isobars,

they become more widely spaced,

so that shows that things will be that bit calmer.

That might just mean it doesn't feel

quite as cool on Tuesday.

There will still be a fair amount of cloud

into the south-east, best of the sunshine

up to the north-west.

Temperatures around 11 to 15 degrees.

Now, for the middle part of the week,

we lose the north-easterly wind completely.

High pressure sets in right across the top

of the British Isles.

Could be quite a cold and frosty night for some,

Tuesday night into Wednesday.

One weak weather front bringing some extra cloud

and some patchy rain into northern

and north-eastern parts of Scotland.

Elsewhere, we'll see some good spells of sunshine.

Those temperatures, beginning to recover

a little bit - it will feel

quite a bit warmer.

More of the same, really, on Thursday.

Plenty of dry weather, some sunshine,

a bit of patchy cloud bubbling up here and there.

Still some extra cloud and some patchy rain

into the north-east of Scotland, and notice,

some rain just beginning

to show its hand close to the south.

As we head towards the end of the week,

this is how things look -

if you are waiting for rain,

low pressure should really be good news,

and there is low pressure swarming,

waiting to pounce, as we get

towards the end of the week.

However, what we really need

to bring areas of low pressure across the country

is a strong jet stream

from west to east, and we don't have that.

The jet stream fairly broken up -

the main body of it actually down to the south.

What that means is our areas of low pressure

will not race across the country -

instead, this low is going

to sit out here to the west,

drawing in a southerly wind.

We're going to see clumps of moisture,

clumps of wet weather,

moving quite erratically

northwards across the country.

With that, we're going to draw in

some fairly warm air,

so what that means is,

where we do see the rain,

it could well be on the heavy side.

It could even be that we'll see

some thunderstorms at times

and, generally speaking,

it will feel that bit warmer.

So we do have some rain in our forecast

for the week ahead, but you are going to have to wait -

some dry weather to get through first.
