09/05/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello, thanks for joining me.

Let's see what the weather

is doing over the next few days.

Certainly very quiet on the weather front right now.

Clear blue skies though

in the last 24 hours across

many western and northern parts of the UK.

Here's a picture from Monday, Argyll Bute,

but look at the difference

on the North Sea coast there.

Low, grey skies,

a wind off the North Sea,

it really didn't feel pleasant at all.

This is the satellite picture from Monday,

and we are going to see this pattern I think

through the course of Tuesday to an extent,

so many western areas will

have the best of the sunshine

and little or no rain, not just through Tuesday

but through most of the week.

There is a change on the way come Friday,

of course, we'll get to that.

But let's have a look at the Tuesday forecast,

best of the sunshine again

across western areas,

certainly the Western Isles of Scotland

doing beautifully through the afternoon,

same goes for Northern Ireland,

Belfast there, about 15 degrees,

probably even nudging up to about 18 degrees.

Fine weather across most of Wales,

down into the south-west,

however, once again, the further east you are,

the thicker the cloud.

So across the Midlands, Yorkshire,

East Anglia and down into the south-east

looks as though we're going to hang on

to that thicker cloud.

But some of that cloud is going to break up

a little bit through the course

of Tuesday night into Wednesday,

and it will be a chilly one,

so, gardeners be warned,

First thing on Wednesday,

a grass frost in some areas,

in smaller towns and cities,

temperatures could only be

two degrees first thing.

But the sun is very strong in May,

so those temperatures will be shooting up

into the mid or high teens

for some of us on Wednesday.

But then Wednesday into Thursday

we are starting to see

a little change in the atmosphere.

These low pressures start

sneaking in, start swinging in from the south-west,

so that means overall,

increasing amounts of cloud to the south

of us and maybe some spots of rain.

To the north, it still stays dry,

pretty chilly in the Northern Isles,

only nine degrees. Come Friday,

we are expecting a weather front

to come in from the south, a lot of moisture,

a lot of warmth, energy with that as well,

and a potential for some flashes of lightning.

On Friday, I think,

be prepared for at least

a risk of some downpours

across the south of the country,

whereas further north, we are

still going to mostly hang on to

the dry weather, with temperatures

still around 16 degrees in Glasgow.

So after that really dry spell

we have been having,

I think our gardens are going to

get a good watering

towards the end of the week.

And whether you like it or not,

you'll probably see some

thunder and lightning as well.

Into Saturday, the weekend

is looking a little bit mixed.

We're going to see these low pressures

swinging out of the south-west.

This is always a mild direction,

so one thing you will notice,

certainly the winds will pick up

and the rain will arrive,

but those temperatures

are going to rise as well.

And into early next week, this is

the pattern of the jet stream,

so there's a dip in the jet stream,

swinging in from the south-west,

and basically, what that means is

that any pressures that form across

the north Atlantic will be

riding that jet stream and sending spells

of rain in our direction.

But in between the lows,

there will be some dry weather,

and again, those low pressures

are going to be pushing in some warmth.

So certainly, I don't think

we're going to be expecting

a complete write-off as far as

next week is concerned,

but it is going to be

looking on the wet side,

particularly the north-west of

the country and also generally warm.

So a change on the way

after this dry spell we've had.
