10/05/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Well, let's see if the weather's going to be kind to us

over the next few days.

It certainly has been in the last couple of two days.

Here's Monday's satellite picture.

Beautiful weather across so many western parts

of the UK, but stubborn cloud

and chilly conditions in the east.

A very similar picture on Tuesday.

Again, thick cloud further east,

and beautiful weather across the rest of the UK.

That area of cloud's shrinking,

and that means that Wednesday is looking sunny all round, almost.

There'll be a little bit of rain

in the far north of the country,

across Orkney and Shetland,

maybe some spots of rain

during the course of Wednesday afternoon.

But for the rest of the UK,

it is looking absolutely stunning.

Let's start with Scotland, though,

because a big temperature contrast here.

In Lerwick, only 7 degrees.

Then you get to southern parts of Scotland,

and we're talking about the mid teens.

Beautiful weather for Belfast,

temperatures throughout Yorkshire on Wednesday

in the mid, possibly the high teens as well.

Similar weather across the south of the UK.

So all along that south coast,

that Channel coastline,

we've got some gloriously sunny weather on the way.

Very little change

as we head through Wednesday evening,

so if you're out in the evening, no rain on the way,

just a few spots there

in the very far north of Scotland.

But look at these blobs here.

This is the early hours of Thursday.

We are anticipating the weather to go downhill

as we head into Thursday.

Let's have a look at the weather map for Thursday.

Weather fronts are approaching from the south-west.

This is an area of low pressure

across Spain, Portugal and France -

lots of thunderstorms here, some very humid weather.

One weather front's going to be

approaching us later on Thursday.

In fact, already in the morning

there could be some showers around

across southern areas, but on the whole,

Thursday is looking mostly dry across the UK,

and still some beautiful weather across northern areas.

Now a different story on Friday.

We start to see humid, warm, thundery,

cloudy weather swinging in from the south-west,

from Iberia, in fact.

This humidity is going to be with us for a few days.

In fact, very humid air not just through the weekend,

but into next week, potentially, as well.

The temperatures will be rising,

there'll be a lot of cloud around on Friday,

I think, throughout the country.

The possibility of thunderstorms and downpours,

but to the far north there across Scotland,

we should probably get away with it.

It's a bit fresher here -

around 10 degrees Celsius.

This is, of course, much-needed rain

for our gardens,

but the storms will be hit and miss, so some areas will get a lot of rain

in a short space of time, maybe even some flash flooding.

Others won't get anything at all.

You'll have some sunshine, maybe hazy sunshine.

Then the weekend, we see low pressure

just to the west of our neighbourhood,

sending weather fronts and freshening winds

out of the south-west.

Still quite a mild and muggy flow of air,

so the weekend is looking pretty changeable.

There'll be some sunshine around,

and it's going to be pretty warm as well,

with those mild south-westerly winds.

Then early next week,

if you were watching Weather For The Week Ahead yesterday,

we looked at the jet stream.

It's still sending the weather out of the south-west.

Remember, this is a warm source, the warm climes here,

so we're seeing air pushing from the south-west to the UK.

So schematically,

low pressure is probably riding that jet stream,

maybe bringing some unsettled weather to north-western areas,

and at the same time, scooping that warmth and that humidity,

and sending it to the UK.

Next week, the summary -

more unsettled, I think.

Some rain in the north-west

at times, but not all the time.

The warmest of the weather

will be across the south-east.
