02/06/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

As is often the case we saw some pretty big contrast across

the UK both in terms of the look and the feel of the weather.

Here's a weather watcher picture from Fife

in south-east Scotland.

Cloudy, some rain in the air.

In fact, much of Scotland and Northern Ireland had

a grey and damp day.

Quite the opposite for England and Wales.

Plenty of sunshine

and it was quite warm quite widely.

The reason for the difference is this weather front which

overnight is creeping its way across the Irish Sea,

getting to the western fringes of England and Wales where it's

quite wet and it's also the dividing line between some warm air in

England and Wales and something fresher in Scotland and

Northern Ireland.

Over the next few days that fresher air wins out.

It's coming in behind our weather front which is drifting eastwards.

The rain becomes lighter and more patchy but just ahead of that

it's going to be quite warm, quite humid and we could see some

thunderstorms breaking out into the afternoon as temperatures get

to 25, 26, 27.

Further west it's dry through the afternoon and temperatures

will be 17 or 18.

That fresher breeze will head to all parts as we head into the weekend.

There will be some sunshine around but also a few showers and

some of those could turn out to be on the heavy side.

Here's a closer look at Saturday.

We've got low pressure in the North Atlantic that's driving this

weather feature towards us.

That will be a focal

point for some cloud and some rain

so the western side of England and Wales turning increasingly cloudy.

Bit of a breeze as well. Northern Ireland will see some rain too.

That will cross its way into western Scotland as we work our way

into the afternoon.

Further south and east it's largely dry and top temperatures down

by several degrees, only 21 or so.

And many places 16 or 17.

Through Saturday night into Sunday our weather feature moves

north across Scotland. The rain becomes a little lighter.

Another area of rain may effect Cornwall on Sunday.

The western side of the UK at risk from showers.

Further east it's largely dry. Top temperatures coming down.

19 by this stage and many places only 14 or 15.

Then as we head towards Monday we're looking out to the Atlantic

again for this feature to come our way.

There are some questions about the detail of the rain on Monday

but it looks like it could be fairly extensive.

Starts in the west and spreads eastwards.

Not a great start to the new week particularly if you have some

travel plans on the road.

There will be a lot of surface water and spray.

That does move out of the way as we head towards Tuesday but

still with low pressure to the eastern side of the UK.

That's where the focal point for some showers is likely to be.

Eastern side of Scotland and England.

Outbreaks of rain coming and going. Further west it's largely dry.

Top temperature only 19 in the London area.

15 or so for many other places.

Looking ahead to the middle of the coming week looks like we're

going to see this system coming in from the west.

A few isobars associated with it.

Windy, maybe blowing a gale in the far north-west but closer to high

pressure in the south and east it should be fine.

That high doesn't move too far by the later stages of next week.

Still there with dry conditions across the south-east.

Further north and west we've got these low pressure systems

moving through.

They are likely to bring spells of wind and rain.

Wet and windy at times mainly in the north-west.

A little rain is likely in the south-east but generally that

bit drier.

It will feel fresh in the north-west but still warm in the south-east.
