18/06/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

The mercury has been rising,

temperatures have been climbing

and the hot weather's that's developed

across many parts of the country will have staying power.

It's going to be a struggle

to bring those temperatures down

over the next few days.

That was the view a little earlier on

from one of our Weather Watchers

in central London.

If you wanted relief from the heat,

the coast was the place to head -

sea breezes which have been bringing

the temperatures down a little bit

along the immediate coastal strip.

Here, there was more cloud.

A very slow-moving weather front

even brought some rain into the far north-west.

During Sunday, well, spot the difference.

The weather front is still sitting in place.

This front isn't moving anywhere quickly.

What that means is Sunday will bring

yet more cloud with some patchy rain

across the north-west of Scotland.

Some of that cloud into Northern Ireland,

eastern and southern Scotland,

but across the bulk of England and Wales,

it is another hot and sunny day.

Temperatures easily climbing

into the mid- to high 20s in many areas,

always that bit cooler closer to the coast, you'll notice.

24 degrees in Brighton,

but inland, spots across the south-east

could well get up to 31,

maybe 32 degrees Celsius.

The hot sunshine extends

across much of northern England.

The north coast of Northern Ireland

seeing more cloud,

that extending into southern and eastern Scotland

and this band of rain progressing

ever so slowly southwards

across the western side of Scotland.

Here's the cloud, here's the rain -

our weather front really not moving anywhere much

through Sunday night and on into Monday.

Another very, very warm and muggy night

to come further south,

particularly there in the centre of London,

maybe no lower than 20 degrees.

Monday - more of the same,

more hot sunshine

across England and Wales.

This hot weather could just spark off

the odd isolated thunderstorm,

the vast majority staying dry.

31 degrees, our band of cloud and patchy rain

still not making much progress

southwards across Scotland.

Now, to the north of that weather front,

that band of cloud and patchy rain,

there is some fresher air

and with the flow of winds

around this area of high pressure,

we're going to try to bring some of that fresher air

further south on Tuesday,

but it will be something of a struggle.

All we're really going to do

is push the hottest conditions

a little bit further west.

Parts of south-west England, Wales

won't be too far away from 30 degrees.

That could give the odd shower

or thunderstorm here and there.

Tuesday night into Wednesday,

high pressure still with us.

An easterly wind and then a southerly wind

across the western side of the British Isles

and that's going to take the heat

and try to move it northwards again

so parts of western Scotland

at this stage getting into

some pretty warm weather.

Notice, though, that slightly fresher feel

in eastern areas.

Now, through Wednesday night into Thursday,

you start to see a bit of a change,

a frontal system moving in

and this is a warm front.

It's likely to bring some outbreaks of rain,

the rain possibly heavy and thundery.

What it will also do, though,

for some of us is bring a return

of some very warm air.

It could get to 30 again in the south-east,

always that bit cooler and fresher

up towards the north-west.

And then as we head through the end of the week,

I don't expect the weather chart

will look quite like this,

but it does look likely

that we're going to see an area of low pressure

becoming quite slow moving

across northern areas of the British Isles

and what that will do

is bring us more of a westerly wind

from the Atlantic, bringing some fresher air

across just about all parts of the country.

That will bring us cooler days,

some fresher and perhaps more comfortable nights

with a mixture of sunshine and showers

so eventually we should budge the heat

and temperatures should start to drop.
