The month of June is drawing to a close and my lasting memories

0:00:020:00:04

of the month will be one of extremes.

0:00:040:00:07

We started off after a pretty dry May

0:00:070:00:09

on a wet note.

0:00:090:00:11

In fact, Edinburgh saw just shy

0:00:110:00:13

of a month's worth of rain

0:00:130:00:14

in just a couple of days.

0:00:140:00:15

Then we found some scorching summer sunshine,

0:00:150:00:18

particularly across central

0:00:180:00:20

and southern parts of England and Wales,

0:00:200:00:22

temperatures in excess of 30 degrees

0:00:220:00:24

and, in fact, the heat wave peaked

0:00:240:00:25

just to the west of London with 35 Celsius,

0:00:250:00:29

the hottest June day since 1976.

0:00:290:00:32

But we close out the month with some extreme weather.

0:00:320:00:36

Again, it looks as though the heavy rain

0:00:360:00:38

set to return for all of us over the next few days

0:00:380:00:41

and I'm sure when the June statistics come out,

0:00:410:00:43

the rainfall totals will be fairly average

0:00:430:00:45

right across the country,

0:00:450:00:47

but in some places, well above average

0:00:470:00:49

because this low pressure is going to sit with us

0:00:490:00:52

for a couple of days

0:00:520:00:54

and the front is not moving very far very fast.

0:00:540:00:56

It will bring further spells of wet weather

0:00:560:00:58

as it pushes its way steadily north and west,

0:00:580:01:01

almost grinding to a halt

0:01:010:01:02

across the Scottish Borders during Wednesday.

0:01:020:01:05

So for Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:01:050:01:07

not too bad a day.

0:01:070:01:08

Breezy and a little bit cool on the east coast,

0:01:080:01:11

the best of the sunshine in the south and east,

0:01:110:01:13

but that could trigger off a few sharp,

0:01:130:01:15

possibly thundery downpours.

0:01:150:01:17

Then as we move out of Wednesday night to Thursday,

0:01:170:01:20

that front will start to drift its way

0:01:200:01:22

north and west across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:220:01:25

It's not going to be a particularly cold start

0:01:250:01:27

to Thursday morning,

0:01:270:01:29

but again we will see some heavy rainfall

0:01:290:01:31

this time across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:310:01:34

With tightly packed isobars here,

0:01:340:01:36

we could see strong to gale force gusts of winds

0:01:360:01:38

for a time through the Central Belt of Scotland

0:01:380:01:41

and there'll be some relentless rain

0:01:410:01:43

through much of the day.

0:01:430:01:44

Funnelling, then, down through the Irish Sea

0:01:440:01:47

across the Isle of Man and into north Wales.

0:01:470:01:49

The best of the drier weather in the south-east corner

0:01:490:01:52

with a little more shelter,

0:01:520:01:54

highs of 20 degrees,

0:01:540:01:55

but it'll feel quite cold

0:01:550:01:56

further north under the rain.

0:01:560:01:58

The frontal system then sinks its way south and east

0:01:580:02:00

as we move into Friday.

0:02:000:02:02

That means yet more rain still from that front

0:02:020:02:05

and again across England and Wales

0:02:050:02:07

and look at the wind direction, a northerly,

0:02:070:02:09

so that is going to make it

0:02:090:02:10

feel cool with the exception,

0:02:100:02:12

perhaps, of a little more shelter

0:02:120:02:14

in the Scottish mountains.

0:02:140:02:15

With the foehn effect, we could see highs of 19.

0:02:150:02:18

But as we move out of Friday

0:02:180:02:19

to the start of the weekend,

0:02:190:02:20

a brief lull in proceedings,

0:02:200:02:22

another low waiting in the wings.

0:02:220:02:24

That will bring some wet and windy weather eventually,

0:02:240:02:26

but Saturday's not looking likely to be too bad.

0:02:260:02:29

Yes, disappointing feel to the north-west,

0:02:290:02:32

highest values of 22 in the south-east.

0:02:320:02:35

That front sinks south and on Sunday,

0:02:350:02:37

we're left with a breezier north-westerly

0:02:370:02:40

or westerly wind direction

0:02:400:02:41

and that could drive in some showers

0:02:410:02:43

so bright and breezy with showers out to the west.

0:02:430:02:45

The best of the sunshine likely

0:02:450:02:47

to be in sheltered eastern areas,

0:02:470:02:49

but still those temperatures

0:02:490:02:50

disappointing to the north,

0:02:500:02:52

highs of 22 in the south-east corner.

0:02:520:02:54

So this week, the jet stream has been really sat

0:02:540:02:57

to the south of us and that's allowed this area

0:02:570:02:59

of low pressure to sit across the UK

0:02:590:03:02

and allow this northerly breeze

0:03:020:03:04

to drive in this cooler source

0:03:040:03:05

for this time of year.

0:03:050:03:07

Now, the jet stream,

0:03:070:03:08

as we move towards the weekend,

0:03:080:03:09

evens itself out a little,

0:03:090:03:11

but it's still likely to sit

0:03:110:03:12

a bit further south than we first anticipated

0:03:120:03:15

and so this area of high pressure not likely

0:03:150:03:18

to make too much of an impact.

0:03:180:03:19

The low stays with us

0:03:190:03:20

and things stay pretty changeable.

0:03:200:03:22

So, be prepared as we move

0:03:220:03:24

into the beginning of July

0:03:240:03:26

for further rain at times

0:03:260:03:27

and those temperatures to stay pretty average.

0:03:270:03:29

Take care.
