22/07/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. We may be right in the middle of summer,

but the weather has been feeling a bit autumnal almost

across parts of the country over the past few days.

We've had heavy rain, strong winds.

Here's the scene in Devon. Teignmouth,

taken by one of our Weather Watchers during Friday afternoon.

Choppy waves, a lot of cloud bringing outbreaks of rain.

It wasn't like that across the country.

A very different scene in Suffolk.

Blue skies, sunshine, but some cumulus clouds around.

Through the weekend, we'll keep some sunny skies,

but also those cumulus clouds likely to bring showers, heavy at times.

And quite blustery.

So a mixed picture as we head to the weekend.

Low pressure is the driving force of our weather.

It's drifting slowly northwards

and eastwards across the country.

So the heavy rain we saw on Friday

will shift northwards

and eastwards on Saturday.

Tends to peter out here across northern England

and southern Scotland.

Further south, with the breeze

rotating around the low pressure,

that brings in further heavy showers

across south-west England, south Wales

and then those showers drift

northwards and eastwards across the country.

Scotland and Northern Ireland having

the best of the dry and bright weather

and temperatures up to around 21 degrees,

so fairly fresh for the time of year.

Moving into Sunday,

in the early hours of Sunday,

we've still got some showers around,

but they drift away off towards the east.

So an improved picture

by the early hours of Sunday

across parts of south Wales

and south-west England.

After a few days of heavy rain,

Sunday should bring drier, sunnier weather.

Still some scattered heavy downpours

through parts of Wales, central England,

perhaps a few across eastern Scotland.

But northern Scotland and Northern Ireland

again mostly dry and bright

and showers fairly few and far between elsewhere.

Temperatures around 19 to 22 degrees for most of us.

Then, through Sunday night,

that low pressure starts to drift away

towards the near continent,

heading off towards the east.

The isobars come from a northerly direction,

so the wind comes in along the east coast,

quite cool for the likes of Aberdeen,

Newcastle, for instance.

Perhaps a bit of rain across the south-east.

Should clear away,

then a much brighter and drier picture

as we head through the day.

We've got a small ridge of higher pressure

trying to creep in from the south-west.

That keeps things quiet into Tuesday.

So Tuesday probably one of the best days

of the week in terms of dry, bright weather.

Most places seeing some sunshine.

It will feel reasonably warm

with those temperatures up to around 25 degrees

in the south-east, fresher further north-west.

But high pressure doesn't stay very long.

We'll see that squeezed away towards the south

and that opens the doors

for low pressure and fronts

to start to move in again from the Atlantic

through the middle of the week.

For Wednesday we'll see cloud increase from the west

after a mostly dry start.

Should remain largely dry in the east.

That band of rain will work gradually

from west to east across the country.

So from mid-week onwards, things turning unsettled once again.

We'll see low pressure out to the north-west of the UK,

still high pressure trying to move in from the south-west.

That's the Azores high that you see there

towards the south-west of the UK.

It never really establishes itself later next week.

Low pressure starts to move in from the north-west.

So wet and windy weather, particularly across northern

and western parts of the country.

You're more likely to stay drier, less windy

with a bit more sunshine

the further south and east you are.

So a bit of a mixed picture

and changeable fortunes in terms of the weather later next week.

But it's generally an unsettled, changeable outlook,

with bands of rain interspersed with showers,

often quite windy

and things will stay rather cool for the time of year.
