15/08/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Whether it's back to work and school this week or you're

still in the flow of your holidays it's damning of the August

weather so far that all it took on Monday was

a temperature of 25 to make it the warmest day of the month so far.

Will there be any warmth on the horizon?

It's very complicated cos of what's happening in the Atlantic.

This is something which often happens this time of year.

This is a developing tropical storm

and over the next few days it is going to strengthen.

It will slowly strengthen to become a hurricane.

Once you throw a hurricane into the mix, particularly across the

Atlantic, it can do funny things to our weather in the longer term.

It can amplify the jet stream and if we get on the right side of it,

dry and warm, wrong side, something more persistent and wet.

The jet stream at the moment, weakened a little bit.

Still to the south of us and that leaves us

in this mixture of sunshine and showers we've seen so far.

Warm enough when the sun is out

but when the showers come through it will be fairly cool.

Hopefully most of you will avoid the showers for the bulk of Tuesday.

Lots of showers across Scotland, Northern Ireland

and the far north of England but some may miss them all together.

Further south few showers and in the sunshine pleasant enough,

we could get 25 or maybe a notch higher.

As we see Tuesday out most of the showers fade away.

Ridge of high pressure building,

winds going to the south in western areas.

That stops the temperature from dropping too much here

but further east it may be a cool start to Wednesday.

Temperatures in some rural areas could dip into single figures.

But a pleasant start for many.

We've got that ridge of high pressure in place.

Sunny start in the east.

In the west make the most of the sunny weather early on

because cloud and rain will move in through the day.

Temperatures are higher in eastern areas even with the sunshine

turning hazy.

One or two could get close to the mid-20s.

Through the night into Thursday a very wet spell

by night pushing from west to east.

Bit of a breeze attached to that area of rain.

For most it gets out into the

North Sea by the time we start Thursday.

We're back to sunshine and showers.

Some showers in the west heavy and thundery.

Some will avoid the showers and

temperatures will push their way into the low 20s.

We do have an area of low pressure centred to the north of us

and that does continue to feed in that shower risk.

We could see longer spells of rain as we head into Friday.

A few weather fronts around that low pressure bringing heavier

rain in the north.

Better chances of sunshine between the rain further south.

With a windier spell it will feel substantially cooler.

That low pressure system pushes off into the North Sea as

we finish Friday.

Into the weekend we don't start on a warm note.

Blustery conditions but it's back to sunshine, hit and miss showers.

A ridge of high pressure builds late in the day

and most of those showers should fade.

Then we get into that wriggly jet stream I mentioned.

What side of that we end up into as we go into Sunday

and the start of next week.

It does look like we'll finish the weekend with low

pressure in the west but what happens next is the big uncertainty.
