You may have to concentrate over the next three and a half minutes | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
because there is an awful lot going on with our weather | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
through the next seven to ten days - plenty of twists and turns, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
lots of changes on the way | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
and, as we start off the new working week, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
a chilly start for many areas, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
particularly central and eastern areas | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
under the influence of this ridge of high pressure. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
Frontal systems trying to muscle in | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
from the north-west, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
but taking a time to work eastwards | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
so really it'll only be north-west Scotland | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
that seems some heavy rain during Monday, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
extra cloud and some patchy rain | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
into other western areas. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
After a frosty start, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
any early fog clearing quickly | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
and then some sunshine further east, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
but just 9 degrees in Norwich, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
temperatures creeping up | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
a little bit there in Belfast | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
and as we head through Monday night, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
our frontal system | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
will eventually make some progress. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
Heavy rain sweeping through Northern Ireland, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
a good part of Scotland. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
Notice some of the rain turning to snow | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
over the high ground in Scotland, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
western fringes of England and Wales | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
and a significantly milder night, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
a significantly milder start to Tuesday morning. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
So, here's our frontal system, then, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
drifting eastwards. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Ahead of it, some pretty strong winds. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Behind it, some cold air tucking back in | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
so, as I mentioned, some of the rain | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
across the high ground of Scotland | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
will turn to snow. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
This band of wet weather | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
working quite erratically eastwards | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
through the day on Tuesday. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Windy ahead of it, lighter winds behind | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
and with some sunshine returning, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
some showers into the west, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
hefty showers at that, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
but in western areas, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
it'll be cooling down again - | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
9 degrees in Belfast, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
perhaps getting up to 12 there in London. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
As we move through the middle part of the week, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
this little area of high pressure | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
tries to have more of an influence on our weather | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
so Wednesday is a window of quiet weather. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
Now, at this time of year, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
quiet weather often means frosty mornings | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
and I think that's what we'll see | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
on Wednesday morning. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
Could be some fog patches, too, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
but then a decent day with spells of sunshine | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
before our next change pushes in from the west. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
Another frontal system | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
drifting its way through, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
bringing some outbreaks of rain. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
Now, there is some uncertainty | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
about the timing of this, | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
but it looks like this will be out of the way | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
from most places by the start of Thursday morning. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
It will hang around in the south-east, we suspect, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
for a while and then as it clears, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
we're back to sunny skies. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
It will be windy, though, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
particularly in the north | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
and there'll be a cool feel | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
with temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
and some showers into the north-west. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Now, as we get into Friday, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
there is a lot of uncertainty | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
by this stage, I have to say. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
High pressure will still be not too far away, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
but frontal systems again | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
pushing in from the Atlantic. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
We could see outbreaks of rain | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
just about anywhere on Friday, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
perhaps turning just a little bit milder | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
down to the south, 13-14 degrees, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
but on the cool side across Northern Ireland, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
northern England and Scotland. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
So, that particular frontal system drifts away. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
We get the ridge of high pressure coming back | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
so another quieter interlude | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
and then Atlantic weather systems | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
try to drift in again from the north-west | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
and that is the pattern that takes us | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
through the coming weekend and beyond. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
Areas of high pressure getting closer | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
and then drifting further away | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
and as the high drifts away, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
it allows low pressure systems | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
to move in from the north-west. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
Now, when our unsettled weather | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
is coming from the north-west, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
it will always be northern | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
and western parts of the country | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
that see the heaviest | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
and most persistent rain. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
Further south and east, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
there'll be a bit of shelter | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
so, yeah, there'll be some rain, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
but the rain not especially heavy | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
for much of the time. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
And there is a chance that, at times, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
our area of high pressure | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
will settle close to the British Isles | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
for a little bit longer | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
and if that happens, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
we will get some slightly longer, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
drier interludes. If that happens, though, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
we'll also see some frost and fog | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
so a lot going on through the week ahead. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30 |
