Hello. It's time for our extended look at the weather, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
and we're still going to be talking about a lot of cold air. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
But in the short term, actually, we do have something a little | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
milder running its way across the British Isles. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
It is relative, but nonetheless | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
this weather system will mean a frost-free night | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
and a very different-looking start to Monday after | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
the days of blue sky and sunshine through the weekend - wet | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
and windy conditions, particularly to the south first thing. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
Brightening behind that weather front into a mixture of sunshine | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
and showers for Monday daytime, a westerly or north-westerly wind, so | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
just feeling that little bit milder | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
than the northerly we've had through the weekend. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Still, though, a chance of some wintry showers across Scotland | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
and perhaps a few for the Welsh mountains. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
The mild air, though, short-lived. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Once that weather system gets away to the south, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
we yet again open the floodgates to let the air in from the Arctic, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
and that's where we're going to keep feeding our air in from | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
for this week, basically. So, here's Tuesday. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
A frosty start, a cold wind, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
particularly along our North Sea coast, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
and wintry showers I think particularly across the North York | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Moors, also across the Highlands and the Grampians again. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
Can't rule out some for Pembrokeshire | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
and the south-west of England, either. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
A lot of sunshine around, though, for the majority, but a cold feel, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
highs of five to seven, feeling lower than that thanks to the wind. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
And through Tuesday into Wednesday, we keep this area of high pressure | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
to the west, the low to the east, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
and it's just the slight shifts in orientation in the next few | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
days that will govern where we get the strongest of the winds | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
and the real focus of the showers. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
For Wednesday, again it looks like it'll be the east coast that picks | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
up the lion's share of the showers, perhaps a little drier further west. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Still a lot of sunshine around on the whole, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
but again another chilly day. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
And then we go into another chilly night Wednesday into Thursday. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
Just keeping a close eye on the North Sea - | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
we may see a little area of low pressure developing in here, and | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
that could mean some particularly strong | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
winds across the eastern side of England on Thursday | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
and a real focus of showers across Lincolnshire and into East Anglia. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
Still a chance, though, of some for Pembrokeshire and the south-west, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
too, but again we're still dominated by a lot of fine if chilly weather. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
A subtle change Thursday into Friday. Watch closely. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
This area of high pressure just tips a little bit | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
more across the British Isles and starts to introduce this front, and | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
that really not bringing anything in the way of meaningful rain, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
I think, on Friday, but it will mean a lot more cloud | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
and perhaps some just slightly less cold air arriving, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
the wind coming just slightly more from a north-westerly direction. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
Temperatures, though, still six, seven, eight degrees, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
so it's more about the way it'll feel, really, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
than how things will significantly change. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
For the weekend, the high does, though, push its way a little bit | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
further eastwards once again, and we do start to pull in some | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
slightly milder air. Again, it is all relative. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
But next weekend looks like we will see our temperatures coming up, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
if only briefly, thanks to that high shifting further south | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
and allowing us to feed the air in basically via the Atlantic | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
and then in from the north, so it will, as I said, be | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
relatively mild in comparison to the cold Arctic air we've had recently. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
But then on into the following week, high pressure comes north again, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
the low tucks into the east and it looks like we'll be | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
back into that northerly air stream and back where we started. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
So in terms of the longer-term outlook, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
for next weekend I think something a little bit milder than | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
the week ahead, but then the return of Arctic air, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
and it is going to feel particularly cold thanks to the biting wind. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24 |
