Hello. Thanks for joining me. We'll update you about | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
how the rest of this week is going to pan out, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
then burst on through the weekend and give you some sense of | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
what's coming up in the run-up toward Christmas. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
In the shorter term, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
bit of a concern about the intensity of snow | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
that could break out across the south-west of Scotland. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
Could even feature in the Glasgow area just in time for the rush hour. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
On a day which is going to see plenty of showers, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
again across many northern, western and southern Channel areas, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
the further east you are, or through the Midlands, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
I think you're in for essentially a dry day. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
Not overly warm, certainly not as warm as in the south on Wednesday. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
Plenty of showers overnight again, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
pushed along by this north-westerly wind, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
and plenty of north-westerly wind, especially across the south-west, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
where again you're in for another gusty sort of night. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Out into Friday, I think the chances are | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
that the wind will have gone round northerly by that stage | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
and that has quite a bearing on the shower distribution. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Quite distinctive in that it pushes the showers | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
along these eastern, northern shores | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
with a few just rattling in to Northern Ireland | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
and down to the west of Wales and into the south-west. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Down the spine of the country there's plenty of sunshine to be had | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
but it does nothing for those temperatures - three to about eight. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
If you're in the full extent of that northerly wind | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
it'll feel even colder than that. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
The northerly doesn't hang around for too long - | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
from Friday into Saturday, just beginning to see those isobars | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
backing around more towards a westerly. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
Certainly that's the case across the western side of the British Isles. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
Just a little feature there ganging those showers up, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
robbing Scotland, Northern Ireland, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
the north-west of England and North Wales of sunshine | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
and putting a dent in the temperatures as a consequence. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
But we continue that journey with the isobars | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
to come round even further to more of a south-westerly, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
and weather fronts marching their way in from the Atlantic, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
and it's a combination of those fronts | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
and that change of air mass direction, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
from the south-west rather than the north, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
that ushers the cold air over towards central Europe. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
And for us, we look towards the Atlantic | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
and we'll do that for quite a while. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
Notice that there is quite a wodge of mild air here | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
stretching right out into the Atlantic | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
so that is certainly going to do us through Sunday | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
and the first part of the forthcoming week, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
but it's at the expense, this boost in temperatures, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
of a loss of sunshine for many parts during Sunday. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
You may not think that five degrees in Norwich is particularly special, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
but we complete the journey into that great raft of mild air | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
as we get, as I say, into the start of the forthcoming week, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
when the air is coming up and around this high pressure | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
which becomes the dominant feature in the south, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
so tending to keep much of this southeastern quarter | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
that little bit drier. What weather fronts there are | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
tending to run up towards the north-western quarter of Scotland. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
Notice those temperature. Monday, double figures. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Can we do it again two days running? | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
Given that supply of mild air, yes, we certainly can. Look at this. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
Widely, temperatures will be in double figures at that stage. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
And having set up that sort of regime, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
I suspect that's the way we'll see it through the middle part of | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
the forthcoming week, and indeed towards the end of the week, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
with that high pressure forcing low pressures up | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
and across the north-western quarter of the British Isles. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
Quite how far up the high goes | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
or how far it sinks towards the Continent | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
open to some debate at the moment, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
but generally with that air flow we'll keep things mild | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
or above average for the time of year. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
There will be some spells of rain, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
predominantly across that north-western quarter, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
and because of the high, dry, yes, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
but there will be some frost and maybe some fog. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
