Hello there. I think it's fair to say

0:00:020:00:03

it's been quite a wintry week of weather,

0:00:030:00:05

but it looks as though Mother Nature releases her grip

0:00:050:00:07

a little on winter as we move towards the weekend.

0:00:070:00:10

For today, it will be a quieter story

0:00:100:00:12

in terms of weather -

0:00:120:00:14

a northerly wind driving in some showers

0:00:140:00:16

off the North Sea coast

0:00:160:00:17

and one or two down into the south-west,

0:00:170:00:18

but sandwiched in between the two,

0:00:180:00:20

it'll be drier with some sunshine coming through.

0:00:200:00:22

A few wintry showers into the far north of Scotland

0:00:220:00:24

and as we go through the night,

0:00:240:00:26

clear skies will allow a frost to form.

0:00:260:00:28

But it looks as though Saturday

0:00:280:00:30

will be the last of the cold days,

0:00:300:00:32

still under the influence of that cold air,

0:00:320:00:34

but as we move through

0:00:340:00:35

the second half of the weekend,

0:00:350:00:36

a south-westerly wind will drive in milder,

0:00:360:00:39

but slightly wetter conditions from the west.

0:00:390:00:41

But we will start off on Saturday

0:00:410:00:43

on a frosty note for many of us.

0:00:430:00:45

The exception, really,

0:00:450:00:47

Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England.

0:00:470:00:49

A little more cloud

0:00:490:00:50

and a few scattered showers here,

0:00:500:00:51

but where we've got the clear skies

0:00:510:00:53

and the sunshine after that frost,

0:00:530:00:55

temperatures are not going to recover very quickly.

0:00:550:00:57

In fact, we'll only see afternoon highs

0:00:570:00:59

of around 3 degrees

0:00:590:01:00

so it's going to be cold,

0:01:000:01:01

milder to the south-west.

0:01:010:01:03

But the mild air's on its way

0:01:030:01:04

as we've already told you,

0:01:040:01:06

and this little nose of high pressure

0:01:060:01:08

quietens things down through the night,

0:01:080:01:10

but it won't be long before this weather front

0:01:100:01:12

starts to influence the story

0:01:120:01:14

by the end of the weekend.

0:01:140:01:15

That's going to bring some rain,

0:01:150:01:17

some of it heavy for a time,

0:01:170:01:18

into Northern Ireland, Scotland,

0:01:180:01:20

eventually into western fringes of Wales

0:01:200:01:22

and south-west England.

0:01:220:01:23

A south-westerly wind,

0:01:230:01:24

milder air starts to push in -

0:01:240:01:26

double digits where we've got the cloud and the rain.

0:01:260:01:29

Now, that front will sweep through

0:01:290:01:31

overnight Sunday into Monday

0:01:310:01:33

and then this high pressure will build.

0:01:330:01:35

Now, this is quite important

0:01:350:01:36

because this looks likely

0:01:360:01:38

to set the trend up for next week

0:01:380:01:40

and, in fact, the high pressure stays

0:01:400:01:41

under the influence to the south here.

0:01:410:01:43

This south-westerly wind will continue to drive in

0:01:430:01:45

a few more showers, but, as you can see,

0:01:450:01:48

8 to 12 degrees, a milder sort.

0:01:480:01:50

Eventually, we'll start to see a weather front

0:01:500:01:53

starting to squeeze in from the north-west -

0:01:530:01:55

the isobars squeezing together,

0:01:550:01:57

the winds strengthening,

0:01:570:01:58

but all the time, central and southern areas

0:01:580:02:00

will be under the influence of this high pressure.

0:02:000:02:03

So, that could lead to some frost

0:02:030:02:05

and potential for some fog,

0:02:050:02:07

which will be slow to lift,

0:02:070:02:09

but it's going to be mild for all,

0:02:090:02:10

double digits quite widely on Tuesday,

0:02:100:02:12

still the potential for some showers

0:02:120:02:14

which will eventually turn into rain

0:02:140:02:16

as that frontal system pushes in during Wednesday.

0:02:160:02:19

As you can see, highs of 9 to 12 degrees

0:02:190:02:21

so let's just recap.

0:02:210:02:23

So far this week, this has been the story.

0:02:230:02:26

The jet stream has been to the southern half,

0:02:260:02:28

the southern flank of the UK,

0:02:280:02:30

and once we're to the north of the jet stream,

0:02:300:02:32

that allows this north-westerly flow.

0:02:320:02:34

We're on the colder side of the jet.

0:02:340:02:35

But as we move into next week,

0:02:350:02:38

the jet stream is going to move

0:02:380:02:40

and in actual fact, it will push

0:02:400:02:41

to the north and west of us.

0:02:410:02:43

Now, what that's going to do,

0:02:430:02:44

it's going to allow this south-westerly flow

0:02:440:02:46

to kick in and so milder for all,

0:02:460:02:48

but also it's going to deflect low pressures

0:02:480:02:51

up into the north-west

0:02:510:02:52

so it looks likely into next week

0:02:520:02:54

that we could see areas of high pressure

0:02:540:02:56

clinging on into the south-east corner,

0:02:560:02:59

early morning frost

0:02:590:03:00

and fog could be an issue,

0:03:000:03:01

but at the same time,

0:03:010:03:02

that south-westerly flow

0:03:020:03:04

will continue to drive in

0:03:040:03:05

areas of low pressure into the north and west.

0:03:050:03:07

That's where we're likely to see

0:03:070:03:09

the most unsettled weather into next week.

0:03:090:03:11

So, just to recap,

0:03:110:03:13

it looks as though it's going to stay mild

0:03:130:03:15

for most of next week with spells of rain

0:03:150:03:17

chiefly to the north and west,

0:03:170:03:18

most of the drier weather into the south.

0:03:180:03:20

So, that's how it's looking.

0:03:200:03:22

I haven't alluded to Christmas weekend.

0:03:220:03:24

I will do that same time tomorrow.

0:03:240:03:26

Take care.
