Hello there. I think it's fair to say | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
it's been quite a wintry week of weather, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
but it looks as though Mother Nature releases her grip | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
a little on winter as we move towards the weekend. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
For today, it will be a quieter story | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
in terms of weather - | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
a northerly wind driving in some showers | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
off the North Sea coast | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
and one or two down into the south-west, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
but sandwiched in between the two, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
it'll be drier with some sunshine coming through. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
A few wintry showers into the far north of Scotland | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and as we go through the night, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
clear skies will allow a frost to form. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
But it looks as though Saturday | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
will be the last of the cold days, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
still under the influence of that cold air, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
but as we move through | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
the second half of the weekend, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
a south-westerly wind will drive in milder, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
but slightly wetter conditions from the west. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
But we will start off on Saturday | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
on a frosty note for many of us. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
The exception, really, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
A little more cloud | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
and a few scattered showers here, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
but where we've got the clear skies | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
and the sunshine after that frost, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
temperatures are not going to recover very quickly. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
In fact, we'll only see afternoon highs | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
of around 3 degrees | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
so it's going to be cold, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
milder to the south-west. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
But the mild air's on its way | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
as we've already told you, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
and this little nose of high pressure | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
quietens things down through the night, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
but it won't be long before this weather front | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
starts to influence the story | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
by the end of the weekend. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
That's going to bring some rain, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
some of it heavy for a time, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
into Northern Ireland, Scotland, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
eventually into western fringes of Wales | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
and south-west England. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
A south-westerly wind, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
milder air starts to push in - | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
double digits where we've got the cloud and the rain. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
Now, that front will sweep through | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
overnight Sunday into Monday | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
and then this high pressure will build. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
Now, this is quite important | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
because this looks likely | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
to set the trend up for next week | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
and, in fact, the high pressure stays | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
under the influence to the south here. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
This south-westerly wind will continue to drive in | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
a few more showers, but, as you can see, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
8 to 12 degrees, a milder sort. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Eventually, we'll start to see a weather front | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
starting to squeeze in from the north-west - | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
the isobars squeezing together, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
the winds strengthening, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
but all the time, central and southern areas | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
will be under the influence of this high pressure. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
So, that could lead to some frost | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
and potential for some fog, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
which will be slow to lift, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
but it's going to be mild for all, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
double digits quite widely on Tuesday, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
still the potential for some showers | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
which will eventually turn into rain | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
as that frontal system pushes in during Wednesday. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
As you can see, highs of 9 to 12 degrees | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
so let's just recap. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
So far this week, this has been the story. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
The jet stream has been to the southern half, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
the southern flank of the UK, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
and once we're to the north of the jet stream, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
that allows this north-westerly flow. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
We're on the colder side of the jet. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
But as we move into next week, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
the jet stream is going to move | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
and in actual fact, it will push | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
to the north and west of us. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Now, what that's going to do, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
it's going to allow this south-westerly flow | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
to kick in and so milder for all, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
but also it's going to deflect low pressures | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
up into the north-west | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
so it looks likely into next week | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
that we could see areas of high pressure | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
clinging on into the south-east corner, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
early morning frost | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
and fog could be an issue, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
but at the same time, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
that south-westerly flow | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
will continue to drive in | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
areas of low pressure into the north and west. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
That's where we're likely to see | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
the most unsettled weather into next week. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
So, just to recap, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
it looks as though it's going to stay mild | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
for most of next week with spells of rain | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
chiefly to the north and west, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
most of the drier weather into the south. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
So, that's how it's looking. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
I haven't alluded to Christmas weekend. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
I will do that same time tomorrow. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
Take care. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27 |
