Welcome to Weather for the Week Ahead where we look further

0:00:020:00:04

afield and I can give you an early insight into what may well

0:00:040:00:08

happen towards Christmas.

0:00:080:00:11

Before that we closed out our wintry week on a cold

0:00:110:00:14

note but with some sunshine.

0:00:140:00:16

Most of the showers were across the far north-east

0:00:160:00:18

and that made it feel bitter if you were caught in the showers.

0:00:180:00:22

Here's a beautiful picture, pretty dramatic

0:00:220:00:24

but I'm sure it didn't feel very pleasant if you were out and about.

0:00:240:00:28

The cold air stays with us

0:00:280:00:30

for one more day before we start to see a change.

0:00:300:00:33

A milder south-westerly flow driving in across the country.

0:00:330:00:36

That is going to bring milder weather but unfortunately it

0:00:360:00:39

will bring wetter weather for the second half of the weekend.

0:00:390:00:42

Before that it's a cold and frosty start for most of us on Saturday.

0:00:420:00:47

The exception Northern Ireland north-west England, Wales

0:00:470:00:49

and eventually into the south-west.

0:00:490:00:51

A rah of showers making it feel a little disappointing here.

0:00:510:00:55

Despite that frost temperatures will struggle with some decent

0:00:550:00:58

spells of sunshine.

0:00:580:00:59

Two or three degrees across central and eastern areas,

0:00:590:01:02

with the cloud and the showers, six to eight.

0:01:020:01:05

The change arrives through Saturday night into Sunday morning.

0:01:050:01:08

This front will push in from the west.

0:01:080:01:11

The wind direction changes, a west or a south-westerly.

0:01:110:01:14

A milder and wetter source. It's bringing in some rain,

0:01:140:01:17

some of it heavy for a time through Northern Ireland, Scotland,

0:01:170:01:20

north-west England and Wales and gradually that will move to

0:01:200:01:23

all parts through parts of Sunday but milder with it.

0:01:230:01:26

7-11.

0:01:260:01:28

That marks the change as we go into the early half of next week.

0:01:280:01:33

It will be predominantly dry, mild for most of us

0:01:330:01:36

but there's going to be a lot of cloud around.

0:01:360:01:38

Don't expect too much in the way of sunshine.

0:01:380:01:40

On Monday perhaps the best of the sunshine will be across central

0:01:400:01:44

and eastern areas and with clearer skies through the night

0:01:440:01:47

it will be a chillier day. Six degrees here.

0:01:470:01:50

We'll see more cloud out to the west.

0:01:500:01:52

The winds increasing, a bit more breeze through the north-west

0:01:520:01:55

and the arrival of another weather front trying to

0:01:550:01:58

push in from the north-west all the time.

0:01:580:02:01

That will introduce a few scattered showers across Scotland

0:02:010:02:03

and Northern Ireland.

0:02:030:02:05

Elsewhere it's a cloudy but dry story,

0:02:050:02:07

9-12 the high on Tuesday afternoon.

0:02:070:02:10

Into Wednesday our weather front, a very weak affair,

0:02:100:02:14

slicing its way down through the country.

0:02:140:02:16

Behind it bright and breezy, 10-11.

0:02:160:02:18

Down to the south, cloudy with highs of 12.

0:02:180:02:22

To the early half of this week this is the weather story.

0:02:220:02:25

We have this area of high pressure to the south.

0:02:250:02:27

The jet stream at the moment really to the north of the UK.

0:02:270:02:30

That's allowing this mild south-westerly flow to develop.

0:02:300:02:33

Deflecting the lows into the north-west, the extreme north-west

0:02:330:02:37

so quite a quiet story but a cloudy story with this moist cloudy flow.

0:02:370:02:42

As we go into the end of the week one computer model

0:02:420:02:46

suggests that the jet stream dips down to the south again

0:02:460:02:50

and when we're to the north of the jet stream that allows

0:02:500:02:53

the north-westerly flow which means as we head to the Christmas

0:02:530:02:56

period it could turn pretty cold.

0:02:560:02:59

However that is only one model.

0:02:590:03:02

The favoured suggestion is for this north south divide to stay

0:03:020:03:08

with us with high pressure down towards the south

0:03:080:03:11

and the jet stream deflecting these lows across to the north.

0:03:110:03:14

Still a lot to play for. Still a lot of uncertainty.

0:03:140:03:18

At the moment it does look as though we start the week ahead mainly mild.

0:03:180:03:21

There will possibly be a brief cold spell

0:03:210:03:24

and then likely to revert back to a north south split.

0:03:240:03:27

We'll firm up on that over the weekend.
