Hello, there. Some much colder weather is set to arrive | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
by the end of this coming weekend, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
but the big question is, how long will it last? | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
We'll try and answer that a little later - | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
but, before then, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
everything is coming in from the Atlantic, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
so, whilst we get some dips in the temperature, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
on the whole, it's wet and windy air | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
that's heading our way. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
This area of low pressure | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
bringing in that weather front, there, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
which is this band of rain, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
which briefly falls as snow | 0:00:23 | 0:00:24
over the tops of the Pennines, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
the hills in Scotland, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
but it doesn't last that long, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
and then the winds pick up from the south-west | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
during the afternoon, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
but draw in some brighter conditions eventually. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
Those temperatures tend to rise, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
but only ahead of some wet and windy weather | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
that's just poking in to Northern Ireland | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
by the end of the afternoon, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
and it's this deepening area of low pressure | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
we need to keep an eye on, actually, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
because - uncertainty about the exact track of it, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
but there are currently warnings | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
of 60-70mph gusts across southern Scotland, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
Northern Ireland and northern England overnight. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
The worst of it should be gone, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
as that low pressure is out in the North Sea | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
by Wednesday morning - | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
but we're left with widespread gales, really, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
across much of England and Wales on Wednesday, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
a windy day here - | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
not as windy further north, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
but there will be a mixture | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
of sunshine and showers, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
some heavy showers | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
across many northern and western areas of the UK, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
maybe with some hail and thunder in there, too. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Temperatures 7 to 10 degrees, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
fairly typically, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
so, decent enough temperatures. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
Probably gets a bit chillier overnight, though, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
as those strong gale force winds | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
tend to ease down slowly but surely | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
as that low pressure runs away, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
and ahead of the next one | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
coming in from the Atlantic. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
So, we start off chilly and bright in most areas. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
A lot of the showers | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
should have gone by this stage, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
but only because we've got this cloud coming in | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
from the south-west to give some outbreaks of rain. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
Again, how quickly that rain comes in | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
from the south-west, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
some uncertainty about that. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
It does draw in milder air, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
but you can see the contrast in temperatures | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
south-west to north-east across the UK, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
and then, the position of the low | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
could be driven more across Ireland | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
into England and Wales, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
keeping Scotland in some slightly colder air - | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
and it will feel cold in that wind, as well - | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
whereas, just across northern England, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
we've got some heavy rain, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
maybe some snow over the Pennines, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
and these showers rapping in further south | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
together with some gale force winds, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
so, it's a windy few days, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
and when the rain comes along, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
it's more likely to be heavy - | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
but things will start to change | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
as we head into the weekend. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
High pressure coming down from Iceland | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
will push away the low pressure | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
into the near continent - | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
but it's a slow process. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
Still got some relatively mild air | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
across the south on Saturday, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
we've still got some outbreaks of rain, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
but a north to north-easterly wind | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
starting to cut in behind that, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
dropping the temperatures, making it feel colder | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
and bringing in some showers | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
around that area of high pressure, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
and that high pressure | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
looks like it's going to build down slowly | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
across the UK | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
as we head into the second half of the weekend, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
and perhaps into the beginning of the next week. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
So, with that high pressure around, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
we're drawing down some cold air, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
it is going to be turning colder. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
For a while, ahead of it, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
there'll be some gale force winds | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
making it feel cold, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
drawing in some wintry showers, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
but we could see a spell | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
of drier but colder conditions. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Now, how long is it going to last? | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
Well, if we look back out in the Atlantic, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
we've got a strengthening jet | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
that's propagating across the Atlantic, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
and it's meeting that block | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
with that area of high pressure. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
Signs are that as we head into next week, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
we may push that high pressure away, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
draw in Atlantic air | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
and bring, for a while, some snow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
