Stormy start to 2018.

0:00:040:00:05

Let me show you the big picture first of all

0:00:050:00:07

and let's have a look at North America

0:00:070:00:09

because here we've seen some very cold weather developing.

0:00:090:00:13

The blue colours,

0:00:130:00:15

big dip here in the jet stream

0:00:150:00:17

dragging the cold air out of Arctic

0:00:170:00:19

Canada and the jet stream shoots across here,

0:00:190:00:22

the big contrast in temperature creates

0:00:220:00:24

a very powerful jet stream and that

0:00:240:00:26

in turn develops the storms closer to home, closer to the ground.

0:00:260:00:31

One of these vortexes, Storm Eleanor, crossing

0:00:310:00:35

the UK and bringing some disruption.

0:00:350:00:39

Through the early hours of the morning we will have seen

0:00:390:00:41

winds possibly to even 90mph along some of the exposed coasts,

0:00:410:00:45

70 or more inland.

0:00:450:00:47

Further south, 50, 60, 70mph further south.

0:00:470:00:53

Even more than that so a really rough start to the day

0:00:530:00:56

and the winds continue to blow hard during the course

0:00:560:01:00

of the morning into the afternoon. Gale force winds.

0:01:000:01:03

By then we will have seen more disruption across southern

0:01:030:01:06

areas as well.

0:01:060:01:07

Perhaps some tree damage but also

0:01:070:01:09

some sunshine so it's not all bad.

0:01:090:01:11

There will be some lulls in the wind

0:01:110:01:14

and some glimmers of sunshine around as well.

0:01:140:01:17

As we head into Thursday,

0:01:170:01:19

this is remnants of Storm Eleanor there, another low pressure

0:01:190:01:23

comes in and this is also going to bring gale force winds.

0:01:230:01:26

Not the level of Eleanor

0:01:260:01:28

but still gales expected across the

0:01:280:01:30

south coast for a time on Thursday.

0:01:300:01:33

Windy around western areas. More of a run of the mill winter gale.

0:01:330:01:38

Thursday night into Friday we see that low pressure pulling out into

0:01:380:01:44

the North Sea and then Friday

0:01:440:01:47

itself a mixture of sunshine and rain.

0:01:470:01:50

Looks like there will be a swathe of rain across northern

0:01:500:01:54

areas of England, maybe Wales too.

0:01:540:01:56

Turning wintry across the Scottish hills.

0:01:560:01:59

The winds are starting to turn direction,

0:01:590:02:01

we're seeing temperatures dipping to single figures.

0:02:010:02:04

Just about 10 in the Channel Islands.

0:02:040:02:07

Then there is a marked change as we head towards Friday and the weekend.

0:02:070:02:11

These isobars are coming from the north,

0:02:110:02:13

that's the direction the wind takes.

0:02:130:02:15

The wind follows these isobars so look at these northerly winds,

0:02:150:02:19

maybe wintry showers across the north.

0:02:190:02:22

Mostly across the hills but not exclusively.

0:02:220:02:25

Temperatures only 2-4 degrees so certainly turning

0:02:250:02:28

colder into the weekend, Saturday and Sunday looking chilly.

0:02:280:02:34

There's also going to be some sunshine with

0:02:340:02:37

the possibility of a bit of morning frost and fog around.

0:02:370:02:41

But if you're wrapped up warmly it's not going to be too bad a weekend.

0:02:410:02:46

Beyond that into Sunday night and Monday,

0:02:460:02:49

looks like the high pressure establishes itself across the UK

0:02:490:02:52

and that means a block in the weather patterns

0:02:520:02:55

so these lows here running up against it and then they can't

0:02:550:02:58

go further towards the east cos that's what high pressures do.

0:02:580:03:01

You can see that pattern on the jet stream, it's racing across the

0:03:010:03:04

Atlantic, then encounters the high pressure and does this

0:03:040:03:09

sort of thing but we get a bit of an arm of the jet stream

0:03:090:03:12

coming in from the north so we get

0:03:120:03:14

that cold air out of the north.

0:03:140:03:16

But it looks like second week of January the winds will be

0:03:160:03:18

lighter and we'll see some frost and fog forming but in the short

0:03:180:03:24

term we've got Storm Eleanor and a bit of wind

0:03:240:03:26

and rain before it calms down.
