Stormy start to 2018. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
Let me show you the big picture first of all | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
and let's have a look at North America | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
because here we've seen some very cold weather developing. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
The blue colours, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
big dip here in the jet stream | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
dragging the cold air out of Arctic | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
Canada and the jet stream shoots across here, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
the big contrast in temperature creates | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
a very powerful jet stream and that | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
in turn develops the storms closer to home, closer to the ground. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:31
One of these vortexes, Storm Eleanor, crossing | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
the UK and bringing some disruption. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
Through the early hours of the morning we will have seen | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
winds possibly to even 90mph along some of the exposed coasts, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
70 or more inland. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Further south, 50, 60, 70mph further south. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:53
Even more than that so a really rough start to the day | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
and the winds continue to blow hard during the course | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
of the morning into the afternoon. Gale force winds. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
By then we will have seen more disruption across southern | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
areas as well. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
Perhaps some tree damage but also | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
some sunshine so it's not all bad. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
There will be some lulls in the wind | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
and some glimmers of sunshine around as well. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
As we head into Thursday, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
this is remnants of Storm Eleanor there, another low pressure | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
comes in and this is also going to bring gale force winds. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
Not the level of Eleanor | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
but still gales expected across the | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
south coast for a time on Thursday. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
Windy around western areas. More of a run of the mill winter gale. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
Thursday night into Friday we see that low pressure pulling out into | 0:01:38 | 0:01:44
the North Sea and then Friday | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
itself a mixture of sunshine and rain. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Looks like there will be a swathe of rain across northern | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
areas of England, maybe Wales too. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Turning wintry across the Scottish hills. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
The winds are starting to turn direction, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
we're seeing temperatures dipping to single figures. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
Just about 10 in the Channel Islands. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Then there is a marked change as we head towards Friday and the weekend. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
These isobars are coming from the north, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
that's the direction the wind takes. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
The wind follows these isobars so look at these northerly winds, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
maybe wintry showers across the north. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Mostly across the hills but not exclusively. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
Temperatures only 2-4 degrees so certainly turning | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
colder into the weekend, Saturday and Sunday looking chilly. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:34
There's also going to be some sunshine with | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
the possibility of a bit of morning frost and fog around. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
But if you're wrapped up warmly it's not going to be too bad a weekend. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:46
Beyond that into Sunday night and Monday, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
looks like the high pressure establishes itself across the UK | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
and that means a block in the weather patterns | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
so these lows here running up against it and then they can't | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
go further towards the east cos that's what high pressures do. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
You can see that pattern on the jet stream, it's racing across the | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Atlantic, then encounters the high pressure and does this | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
sort of thing but we get a bit of an arm of the jet stream | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
coming in from the north so we get | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
that cold air out of the north. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
But it looks like second week of January the winds will be | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
lighter and we'll see some frost and fog forming but in the short | 0:03:18 | 0:03:24
term we've got Storm Eleanor and a bit of wind | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
and rain before it calms down. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27 |
