Welcome to our regular weekly look at international holiday weather.

0:00:030:00:06

Whilst here we are bracing ourselves for storm Abigail

0:00:060:00:09

and later in the weekend some very wet weather,

0:00:090:00:11

indeed over the weekend, some potentially exceptional wet weather,

0:00:110:00:14

we do have some warmth still with us further south through

0:00:140:00:17

the Mediterranean islands and into southern Europe.

0:00:170:00:19

The oranges indicate temperatures just into the low 20s.

0:00:190:00:22

21 in Athens, plenty of sunshine here after what has been quite

0:00:220:00:26

a stormy autumn. You won't be without a few showers

0:00:260:00:29

but, generally through the Mediterranean islands,

0:00:290:00:31

across the Balearics and into Iberia, through Portugal, lots of fine

0:00:310:00:35

and dry weather, down towards the Canaries and Madeira as well.

0:00:350:00:39

So a settled weekend for many here

0:00:390:00:41

and indeed across southern parts of France.

0:00:410:00:44

You can see Thessalonika

0:00:440:00:45

seeing temperatures into the high teens here.

0:00:450:00:47

And Faro up to 20 degrees. A bit more cloud come Sunday.

0:00:470:00:51

Further north, we do pick up more cloud,

0:00:510:00:55

a weak weather front around across northern parts of France.

0:00:550:00:57

But it is that weather front which will sit across parts of the central

0:00:570:01:01

areas of the UK, north Wales, northern England

0:01:010:01:03

and southern Scotland which could bring some exceptional

0:01:030:01:06

amounts of rainfall and clearly a concern for flooding.

0:01:060:01:09

It will affect parts of the Low Countries as well.

0:01:090:01:12

London stays wet,

0:01:120:01:14

potentially some rain around early on Sunday as well.

0:01:140:01:17

To the south of that in Paris, some drier but still cloudy weather.

0:01:170:01:21

Let's head over to the States now

0:01:210:01:22

because across eastern parts of the US and indeed eastern Canada -

0:01:220:01:26

some snow to come here over the next few days - it is quite chilly air

0:01:260:01:29

so only eight the high in New York.

0:01:290:01:31

A few showers further south across southern states,

0:01:310:01:34

southern parts of Florida.

0:01:340:01:35

Actually, for the weekend looking pretty unsettled

0:01:350:01:38

across the Pacific Northwest as well.

0:01:380:01:40

You saw that rain there in Seattle.

0:01:400:01:41

It warms up a little bit with some sunshine come Sunday as high pressure

0:01:410:01:44

starts to build northwards both for New York and

0:01:440:01:47

for Washington, whilst further west those weather fronts still coming in.

0:01:470:01:50

So for Seattle, for example, some rain around and some showers

0:01:500:01:53

developing as well in LA and potentially Dallas too.

0:01:530:01:57

As we head to Australia, some stormy weather has been affecting parts of

0:01:570:02:01

New South Wales, parts of Queensland and up into Northern Territories.

0:02:010:02:04

That continues into the weekend.

0:02:040:02:06

You'd expect that at this time of year.

0:02:060:02:08

Starting to develop those showers across Northern Territories

0:02:080:02:11

but for Queensland and New South Wales, big storms, some severe

0:02:110:02:14

storms, you can see, by the brighter colours here on the rainfall chart.

0:02:140:02:18

So some significant thunderstorms around.

0:02:180:02:20

In comparison, on Saturday, in New Zealand it looks fine and dry.

0:02:200:02:25

Temperatures still getting there. You can see the low teens.

0:02:250:02:28

However, come Sunday, we have got some rain marching into New Zealand.

0:02:280:02:32

Still those showers in the south and east of Australia

0:02:320:02:35

but warming up in Perth. 37 the high here.

0:02:350:02:38

Back home, I have talked about Abigail.

0:02:380:02:40

It has been packing a punch through Thursday evening.

0:02:400:02:43

Gusts of 60-70mph but potentially more in the north and west through

0:02:430:02:46

the night and this little area of rain

0:02:460:02:48

will be accompanied by squally winds rushing across

0:02:480:02:51

the southern half of the UK first thing Friday as well.

0:02:510:02:54

So, yes, we could easily see 70, 80, 90mph gusts of wind

0:02:540:02:57

in northern and western areas

0:02:570:02:59

where we have got that amber warning from the Met Office.

0:02:590:03:02

It gets much colder behind so we will see our first

0:03:020:03:05

snow of the season across the Scottish mountains.

0:03:050:03:07

As I say, top gusts 80mph, potentially more.

0:03:070:03:10

The impacts of course are flooding, power outages and travel disruption.

0:03:100:03:13

Coastal flooding, that is.

0:03:130:03:14

We start Friday with some nasty weather across many parts

0:03:140:03:18

but gusty winds of 60-70mph

0:03:180:03:19

potentially in western parts of England and Wales

0:03:190:03:22

and even 60 further east as that rain clears away.

0:03:220:03:25

Then snow could penetrate those showers across Cumbria,

0:03:250:03:28

into the Pennines as well.

0:03:280:03:29

It may well say 7-12 on the thermometer.

0:03:290:03:31

That is lower than it has been for some time

0:03:310:03:33

but it will feel much colder.

0:03:330:03:35

Now, back to Saturday and what I talked about earlier was

0:03:350:03:38

the potential for an awful lot of rain.

0:03:380:03:40

This tropical air in amongst this next area of low pressure

0:03:400:03:43

through Saturday and Sunday, meandering across central areas.

0:03:430:03:46

Southern Scotland, north-west England, north Wales, we think,

0:03:460:03:50

could see as much as 100-150 millimetres of rain in places.

0:03:500:03:53

That will cause significant impact and potentially flooding.

0:03:530:03:57

Clearly, that is an exceptional amount of rain

0:03:570:03:59

so please do stay tuned to the forecasts.
