Good morning.

0:00:030:00:04

I'm Hayley with all the latest stories.

0:00:040:00:06

Here's what's coming up.

0:00:060:00:08

How virtual reality is bringing a disaster zone to life.

0:00:080:00:13

And how you train a search and rescue dog.

0:00:130:00:17

First this morning, junior doctors across England aren't turning up

0:00:270:00:28

to work today and tomorrow.

0:00:290:00:32

They are striking because they can't agree with the government over

0:00:320:00:35

changes to pay and working hours.

0:00:350:00:37

It's the fifth strike this year and the first to affect accident

0:00:370:00:40

and emergency departments.

0:00:400:00:42

More senior doctors are stepping in to make sure those

0:00:420:00:45

who need care can get it.

0:00:450:00:49

Imagine a city left deserted for 30 years.

0:00:490:00:52

Well that's what happened after a nuclear disaster

0:00:520:00:54

in Ukraine in Eastern Europe.

0:00:540:00:57

Scientists have spent a week inside the exclusion zone,

0:00:570:01:00

where nobody lives, taking pictures.

0:01:000:01:04

So now everyone can experience a virtual look around the Chernobyl

0:01:040:01:07

nuclear power plant.

0:01:070:01:10

Leah's been having a look.

0:01:100:01:13

The Six O'Clock News from the BBC.

0:01:130:01:15

The cloud of radiation from Chernobyl power station.

0:01:150:01:19

It was the world's worst ever nuclear accident.

0:01:190:01:23

30 years ago, part of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded.

0:01:230:01:28

It released harmful radiation into the air

0:01:280:01:31

in Ukraine in Eastern Europe.

0:01:310:01:35

People can't touch, smell or even taste radiation but if there's

0:01:350:01:38

lots of it around someone, it can be dangerous.

0:01:380:01:43

This material was spread for miles and nearly 100,000 people had

0:01:430:01:47

to leave their homes because of the danger

0:01:470:01:49

to their health.

0:01:490:01:51

A large no-go zone was set up in the area to stop people

0:01:510:01:54

from staying there and Chernobyl became a ghost town.

0:01:540:01:59

Even now people aren't allowed to live there.

0:01:590:02:02

And now kids from across the UK are getting the chance to see

0:02:020:02:06

what life is like inside the disaster zone now using one

0:02:060:02:10

of those, a virtual reality headset and it's not what you think.

0:02:100:02:15

I also saw a few animals that walked around.

0:02:150:02:17

The buildings.

0:02:170:02:19

Different animals, different trees, they changed all the time.

0:02:190:02:22

What did you make of it?

0:02:220:02:24

I thought it was very interesting and very fun.

0:02:240:02:26

It's very realistic and it's quite interesting to see

0:02:260:02:28

all the different sites.

0:02:280:02:32

As I was looking around, I turned around and I saw a bear

0:02:320:02:35

and that really shocked me.

0:02:350:02:36

It's really interesting and everyone should know about it because it's

0:02:360:02:39

a disaster as well.

0:02:390:02:41

It's really good.

0:02:410:02:42

It's an amazing experience.

0:02:420:02:45

It actually felt like I was there.

0:02:450:02:47

Although people were forced to leave because of the radiation,

0:02:470:02:50

the area's wild animal population is booming.

0:02:500:02:54

It's now home to wolves, wild horses and wild boar.

0:02:540:02:57

It was just remarkable to see how much is there.

0:02:570:03:00

The wildlife is thriving, and we thought that after this

0:03:000:03:03

fallout that it would be to the complete

0:03:030:03:05

detriment of animals.

0:03:050:03:07

Virtual reality is a game changer for scientists because it just

0:03:070:03:09

allows people to come into the places where

0:03:090:03:11

they were which otherwise wouldn't be possible.

0:03:110:03:15

Chernobyl will be too dangerous to live in for hundreds of years

0:03:150:03:19

but, with virtual reality, people can catch a glimpse

0:03:190:03:21

of the life returning in the area.

0:03:210:03:25

Leicester will win the Premier League title if they beat

0:03:280:03:31

Manchester United on Sunday.

0:03:310:03:33

It's after main rivals Tottenham could only manage a draw

0:03:330:03:36

against West Brom last night.

0:03:360:03:40

Craig Dawson equalised in the second-half after netting

0:03:400:03:41

an own goal in the first.

0:03:410:03:44

It means Spurs are now seven points behind the Foxes.

0:03:440:03:49

It's been just over a year since the first of two powerful

0:03:490:03:52

earthquakes struck Nepal in south Asia.

0:03:520:03:55

The UK has played a big part in helping people

0:03:550:03:57

there rebuild their lives.

0:03:570:03:59

Part of that has included sending out British search and rescue dogs

0:03:590:04:04

and Martin's been along to meet them.

0:04:040:04:08

Nepal's capital city Kathmandu looked like this

0:04:080:04:10

after the second earthquake hit.

0:04:100:04:13

It had a magnitude of 7.8, which means it was very strong.

0:04:130:04:18

The UK sent a huge amount of highly trained search and rescue

0:04:180:04:21

teams to help, including doctors and firefighters.

0:04:210:04:25

Their jobs were to provide first aid, carry out searches

0:04:250:04:27

and stabilise buildings.

0:04:270:04:30

And it wasn't just us humans doing the work.

0:04:300:04:34

Specialist search dogs like this one also played a big part.

0:04:340:04:38

I've come to this fire station in Birmingham cos this

0:04:380:04:40

is where these amazing animals are trained to become rescue dogs.

0:04:400:04:47

It has to have certain elements.

0:04:480:04:50

It has to be very focused.

0:04:500:04:52

It has to have a lot of drive.

0:04:520:04:55

Those are some of the main points that we look for to convert a normal

0:04:550:04:58

dog into a specialist search and rescue dog.

0:04:580:05:02

Just one big game of hide and seek where the dog goes out looking

0:05:020:05:05

for somebody who has a squeaky ball or a toy.

0:05:050:05:09

Once they find them, they have to bark and once that

0:05:090:05:11

happens, they then get delivered the toy.

0:05:110:05:14

Can any dog become a rescue dog?

0:05:140:05:16

Not really.

0:05:160:05:18

I use border collies.

0:05:180:05:21

Within the UK Fire and Rescue Service team we have labradors,

0:05:210:05:23

we have springer spaniels.

0:05:230:05:25

We've had German Shepherds as well.

0:05:250:05:27

So it tends to go down the route of the working breed dog.

0:05:270:05:32

Isn't it great that we have dogs like Diesel here making sure

0:05:320:05:35

that the people who live in the affected areas

0:05:350:05:37

have a bright future?

0:05:370:05:40

Good job.

0:05:400:05:42

And now to a rescue story of a different kind.

0:05:420:05:44

These tiny ducklings have been rescued from a drain by firefighters

0:05:440:05:47

in the American state of Oklahoma.

0:05:470:05:50

After some good teamwork, the little cuties were safely

0:05:500:05:53

reunited with their mum.

0:05:530:05:54

Well, done guys.

0:05:540:05:55

That's all from me.

0:05:550:05:56

Newsround's back at 4.20pm.

0:05:560:05:57

Bye!
