-but today, it's all about squirrels.

-I'm searching for the squirrel

-as its Squirrel Appreciation Day.

-I haven't been able to find one

-and join the Cory Brass Band...

-..which is one of the best

-brass bands in the world.

-They've recently announced that

-the presenter, Morgan Jones...

-..is the new president of the band.

-But how did Morgan, a member

-of the Trefor Brass Band...

-..become the president of one of

-the world's most famous brass bands?

-Llinos is there on our behalf.

-He's travelled from North Wales

-to be here.

-Tell us about the connection.

-First, there was a competition

-on S4C for brass bands.

-The winner was the Cory Band.

-I was invited to Manchester

-with the band...

-..to describe the various

-instruments in the band.

-It's all stemmed from there.

-Are you pleased to accept the job?

-It's an honour to be

-the band's president.

-I've always loved football and brass

-bands since I was a child.

-What instrument do you play?

-I play the trombone.

-It's an exciting time for the band.

-We're going to America.

-We'll be there for ten days

-to play in six concerts.

-Last weekend,

-we had a concert in France.

-We're going to France later in the

-year for another competition.

-It's an important year for Wales...

-..as they are playing in the FA Cup.

-We're more familiar with

-our competition...

-..than the Welsh football team!

-The band enjoys performing

-and touring.

-We went to Australia

-a few years ago.

-You cannot travel the world

-without support.

-You've got an appeal.

-Yes, the football has got the nation

-behind them.

-We need the same support.

-We need funds to help

-with our tours.

-I haven't been invited on the

-tour yet.

-What is the difference between the

-South Wales brass bands...

-..and North Wales brass bands?

-I can't compare the bands in

-North Wales and South Wales.

-The Cory Band is the best band

-in the world.

-Wales needs to be proud

-of its brass band.

-These are popular bands who play

-popular music.

-We're playing Men of Harlech later.

-Love them or hate them, there's

-a day to celebrate these creatures.

-Grey squirrels are common but the

-numbers of red ones are on the rise.

-Daf Wyn has been in search

-of our furry little friends.

-There's 2.5 million squirrels

-in the British Isles.

-One breed is thriving whilst

-the other is increasing in numbers.

-These animals are quite common.

-The red squirrel

-is originally from Britain...

-..and grey squirrels came to Britain

-from North America.

-When did the grey squirrel

-come to Britain?

-We think they came to Britain

-in the 1870s in the Victorian era.

-They eat nuts, seeds, fruit and eggs

-but both breeds eat the same.

-Grey squirrels are bigger

-and eat more.

-We want to increase the red squirrel

-population but the greys are common.

-Wales has many projects to boost

-the numbers of red squirrels.

-The Towy Valley has one by the Mid

-Wales Red Squirrel Partnership...

-..and there's another on Anglesey.

-The project started on Anglesey

-in 1997.

-Dr Craig Shuttleworth did a survey

-of the numbers of red squirrels.

-In the winter of 1997 and 1998,

-he trapped red and grey squirrels.

-Every red squirrel was released and

-tagged whilst the greys were killed.

-Today, we think there's

-about 300-400 red squirrels...

-..in this forest in Newborough.

-The red squirrel is very shy

-and difficult to spot...

-..but we can scour the land

-for its tracks.

-Nibbled pine cones

-are a sign of them.

-Yes, the red squirrel

-is thriving on the island...

-..but the grey ones

-steal the limelight in Cardiff.

-The squirrels in Bute Park

-in Cardiff have made the news.

-It's because they are overweight...

-yes, overweight!

-With the mild weather

-and food from the city slickers...

-..the squirrels of Bute Park have

-hit the headlines in recent weeks.

-In Cilgerran, Nia and me are in

-a forest searching for squirrels.

-How common are squirrels

-in this nature reserve?

-Unfortunately, grey squirrels

-are common and very dominant.

-We've erected bird boxes

-It's Squirrel Appreciation Day

-but we haven't seen any today.

-No, we'll have to keep looking.

-..then that would be brilliant.

-It's great for them to meet

-the presenters as they own Stwnsh.

-It's important for us all to sing

-Welsh songs together and have fun.

-People get to hear songs

-and learn about the programmes.

-It's important to do this in Welsh

-and it's excellent that we do it.
