-the Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd.

-There is a change of plan

-to tonight's programme...

-..following the sad passing

-of two prominent figures in Wales.

-The talented musician, Sioned James

-died tragically aged 41...

-..and the 84-year-old

-Anglesey actor, J O Roberts.

-Both were related as J O

-was Sioned James' father-in-law.

-With his velvety vocals

-and appreciation for words...

-..J O Roberts was known for his role

-as Owain Glyndwr in the 1980s...

-..and Harri Vaughan

-in Lleifior in the 1990s.

-He also inspired drama students

-at Bangor Normal College.

-Last week, he received an Honorary

-Fellowship from Bangor University...

-..for services to drama.

-John Owen Roberts

-was born in Liverpool in 1932.

-He and his sister went to live with

-their grandparents on Anglesey...

-..at the outbreak

-of the Second World War.

-This is where he went to school

-and first encountered the theatre.

-After teaching at Llanerch-y-Medd

-and Bodffordd...

-..he moved to the drama department

-at the Bangor Normal College.

-After retiring in the early 1980s...

-..J O Roberts became a familiar face

-on television and in the theatre.

-Hogia'r Wyddfa got to know

-J O Roberts in the 1960s.

-J O brought integrity to the

-Noson Lawen as its compere.

-That's true of the man himself.

-I heard John's voice

-before I met him.

-He had a unique voice that couldn't

-be mistaken for anyone else.

-There are three things

-I'll remember about J O Roberts.

-He was handsome, had an excellent

-voice and was from Anglesey.

-He knew about these things

-and wanted you to know about it too.

-The addition to that third fact

-is that he was born in Liverpool...

-..and an Evertonian.

-This is what I swear,

-Owain Glyndwr the Prince of Wales.

-I remember performing

-with him in Siwan.

-He'd have to stage slap with me

-which was very striking...

-..as I'd be thrown across the stage.

-Three weeks after the tour, I learnt

-that I was pregnant with Guto.

-A fortnight after the news broke,

-there was a knock on the door.

-It was John and Mabel and John was

-behind a massive bunch of flowers.

-The card read, "Sorry, Mo!"

-I remember the special adaptation

-of O Law i Law.

-It was the first production

-of Cwmni Theatr Gwynedd...

-..that was in place to keep

-the theatre running.

-John and I laughed through it

-and so did the audience.

-Twelve years ago, we set up the

-Tuesday Club who played golf.

-John was one of the first

-to join that club.

-He loved it and his presence

-and storytelling was a part of it.

-When you were on stage or set

-with John...

-..you were aware of his presence

-but he wasn't selfish.

-It would have been easy

-to be selfish...

-..but he could play alongside you

-despite his good looks and voice.

-J O was great

-in front of a small audience.

-An evening with J O

-after a Noson Lawen...

-..was made up of him

-telling us his stories.

-Edward Morus Jones now joins me

-at the Showground in Llanelwedd.

-You'd been a close friend of J O

-for many years.

-Yes, our paths often crossed

-when we both moved to Anglesey.

-Over the 40 years, we would meet...

-..and I thought the world of him

-as The Voice.

-He performed in various theatres

-as well as on film.

-I was thinking about him

-this week...

-..because the winner of the

-Sir Bryner Jones Memorial Award...

-..was Tom Tudor of Llysun

-which is where they filmed Lleifior.

-He spoke about the film so it's

-tragic to have lost that kind voice.

-We think of him as an actor but

-he was also an excellent teacher.

-Yes, and that's important

-to remember.

-A good teacher can present things

-to people.

-He worked in a school

-and at Bangor Normal College...

-..and shared the emotion of creating

-a character, the voice and feeling.

-They thought the world of J O.

-He was also a singer with

-Cor y Traeth and had a love of golf.

-He was a true Welshman who helped

-the cause on Anglesey.

-Wales is at a loss without him.

-Thank you for talking with us.

-I'm glad to have known him.

-That was Edward Morus Jones

-paying tribute to J O Roberts.

-Sadly, J O Roberts' daughter-in-law,

-Sioned James also died last night.

-She was a talented musician

-and founder of the Cordydd choir.

-She was married to J O's son,

-Gareth Roberts, the broadcaster.

-At 16, the Llandysul-born conductor

-worked with Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion.

-She founded Cordydd in 2000 and they

-won many prestigious competitions.

-She appeared in numerous S4C series

-such as Codi Canu and Llais I Gymru.

-Friends and fellow musicians

-have been paying tribute to her.

-It's hard to accept that someone

-as talented as Sioned has left us.

-I remember her as a mischievous girl

-at the Eisteddfod in Llandeilo.

-I got to know her when

-she established Cordydd in Cardiff.

-My son and daughter-in-law

-were amongst the original members.

-I got to know her better when

-we established Cor y Mochyn Du.

-I asked Sioned to conduct us and

-didn't think she'd have the time...

-..but she was delighted

-and we had a whale of a time.

-I'll remember Sioned as a very close

-friend and true musician.

-I could turn to hear

-for advice on anything.

-She was always willing to listen

-and always there to help.

-When she helped with Waun Ddyfal,

-she always had advice.

-She had a unique way of engaging

-with the choir...

-..and focusing on musical details.

-I certainly wouldn't have succeeded

-with my choirs...

-..if Sioned hadn't been there

-to admire and be my musical hero.

-The Sioned that I met was on fire

-and passionate about choral music.

-She was incredibly talented

-and had a certain way with people.

-I learnt so much from her

-as a close friend.

-I'll miss those phone calls

-where we discussed and chose music.

-She was honest in her treatment

-of the choir.

-I joined Cordydd and had some

-great experiences under her baton.

-A lot of conductors have learnt

-from Sioned and her repertoire...

-..and realized that choirs should

-present songs in a new format.

-I think Sioned was ground-breaking

-and a very ambitious in that.

-As a result, her contribution will

-be celebrated for years to come.

-She's given other conductors

-true guidance.

-She was a real inspiration

-and a very talented musician.

-The choir and everyone else

-will miss her.

-Thank you for the opportunity

-to tell you how much I admired her.

-She has left us far too young.

-She achieved so much in her short

-life but there was more to come.

-Thank you, Sioned for everything

-you did for choral music in Wales.

-Shan Cothi was also Sioned's

-close friend and work colleague.

-Earlier, Shan told me about

-the first time they met.

-When did you first meet each other?

-She was in her twenties and

-we worked together on Y Sioe Fach...

-..with Sulwyn Thomas, Alwyn Sion,

-Nia Lloyd Jones, me and Sioned.

-She was a real character

-with a massive personality...

-..who was full of fun and mischief.

-I knew about her through music

-and that she had a degree...

-..but didn't realize she would

-achieve so much for choral music.

-She was an incredible musician

-and a true perfectionist too.

-She was ground-breaking, pioneering

-and wanted everything to be perfect.

-She was so passionate

-about everything she did.

-Did you two ever work together

-on the musical stage?

-I remember concerts

-and watching her compete.

-Cordydd achieved so much

-because she kept them on their feet.

-I worked with her on Llais i Gymru

-when she was its producer.

-We were searching for new talent and

-she was excited about the future.

-The tenor, Trystan Llyr Griffiths

-appeared on Llais i Gymru...

-..and Sioned was responsible

-for the series.

-We had deep discussions about music

-and vocals...

-..and she was proud of the high

-quality of talent we have in Wales.

-It brought her to tears

-to hear a truly talented performer.

-I can't believe we've lost

-someone who had so much to offer.

-It's a real shock for us all.

-It's a very sad day in Wales

-as we've lost two great talents.

-The musician, Sioned James

-and actor, J O Roberts...

-..both passed away last night.

-We send our condolences

-to their families.

-Gareth Bale was joined

-by his daughter on the pitch...

-..to celebrate a victory

-against Northern Ireland.

-Gwen Johnston is a pupil

-at Amlwch's Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones.

-She sketched an image

-of Gareth and his daughter.

-The school is overjoyed

-that Gareth Bale loves it.

-We met the young artist

-with Gareth Bale as a fan.

-It's the end of the term

-at Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones in Amlwch.

-It's our sports day and we'll bask

-in the success of one pupil, Gwen.

-Gwen drew a picture of Gareth Bale

-that is all over the media.

-We're very proud of her success

-and has put the school on the map.

-I saw Gareth Bale

-taking Alba onto the pitch.

-Everyone was so happy as Wales had

-won so I decided to draw a picture.

-I found a picture online and started

-sketching and did it in two days.

-Mam uploaded the picture

-on Facebook and Twitter.

-Within hours, it had been shared and

-people liked it and gave comments.

-A week and a half later, I had

-a tweet from Gareth Bale saying...

-"Sorry, I haven't got in touch

-sooner. Gwen, your art is amazing!"

-Everyone at school is happy with it

-but shocked that it's gone viral.

-Some friends and I are doing

-a project in the Common Room.

-We're spray painting the walls with

-images that are important to Wales.

-It's inspired by Wales and their

-success in rugby and football.

-We knew that Gwen is good

-at doing portraits...

-..but when Gareth Bale

-liked the sketch of him and Alba...

-..we were in shock, it was amazing

-and I'm quite jealous!

-The only thing

-that can make it better...

-..is for Gareth Bale to come

-to our school for a game of footie.

-The show has been running

-for three months.

-We go through the 1970s

-and into the 1980s...

-..and anything up to

-the Cool Cymru period.

-We look at artists

-who are still going...

-..or those who have hung up

-their instruments.

-We recently heard about

-the former band of Sian James.

-Vinyl collections

-can be very lucrative now.

-There's a lot of vinyls.

-This all started

-with my own vinyls.

-I try to find something obscure.

-You also have a series about

-another period of music.

-This is also for Radio Cymru.

-It looks at the Mods and Rockers

-and the Bikers.

-I was amazed at the number

-of Bikers to be had...

-..in Pwllheli

-and other parts of Wales.

-It's very interesting.

-All the people have those details...

-..about living that era!

-It changed their lives.

-I was a punk rocker.

-I feel like a casual rocker!
