CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:09:560:10:00

The voice of Keane,

0:10:030:10:04

now with a marvellous new solo record, Tom Chaplin!

0:10:040:10:07

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:10:070:10:09

That was called The Wave.

0:10:090:10:11

So, now, the big question for many musicians, is are you match-fit?

0:10:110:10:15

To be match-fit, you have to do lots of gigs

0:10:150:10:18

to get yourself match-fit.

0:10:180:10:19

These next artists do that over 250 shows,

0:10:190:10:23

touring the great theatres of America.

0:10:230:10:25

We welcome Blackberry Smoke!

0:10:250:10:27

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:10:270:10:31

# Well, if I had a nickel for every line this town put on my face

0:10:450:10:51

# If I had a dime for every time I said I'm fixing to leave this place

0:10:510:10:57

# It would help me buy the gas

0:10:570:10:58

# I'm about to pour on everything I've seen

0:10:580:11:01

# I can't be sentimental when it don't mean nothing to me

0:11:030:11:06

# Let it burn, burn Just let it burn

0:11:080:11:13

# I'm sick of hangin' round here waiting for the tide to turn

0:11:140:11:18

# It don't matter if its far or near

0:11:210:11:23

# Just as long as I get out of here

0:11:230:11:26

# Let it burn, let it burn

0:11:260:11:30

# I work too damn hard to wind up in this shotgun shack

0:11:410:11:46

# To get a little behind and have a man come and take it back

0:11:460:11:51

# They're all breathing down my neck waiting for me to fall

0:11:520:11:58

# Well, if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all

0:11:580:12:02

# Let it burn, burn Momma, let it burn

0:12:040:12:09

# I can't wait to see 'em all when they ain't got nowhere to turn

0:12:100:12:16

# I watch the flames light up the sky

0:12:160:12:19

# Blow 'em a kiss as I wave goodbye

0:12:190:12:22

# Let it burn, burn Just let it burn

0:12:450:12:49

# Well, I'm sick of hangin' round here waiting on the tide to turn

0:12:510:12:55

# Well, even if I wanted to stay

0:12:570:13:00

# They'd probably run me outta here anyway

0:13:000:13:02

# Let it burn. #

0:13:020:13:05

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:13:190:13:23

0:13:590:14:03

# We're in it now Everybody knows what I've become

0:14:030:14:07

# Truth is I never once was sad for what I've done

0:14:090:14:15

# It's like a game Everybody dies

0:14:160:14:19

# Has no fun

0:14:190:14:21

# Still I want to play Even if I end where I've begun

0:14:220:14:27

# Cos you make me feel

0:14:290:14:31

# Alive in spite of rising water

0:14:310:14:35

# Abandoning

0:14:350:14:37

# My car about a mile from nowhere

0:14:380:14:42

# You make me feel

0:14:420:14:44

# Alive in spite of rising water

0:14:440:14:49

# Abandoning

0:14:490:14:51

# My car about a mile from nowhere

0:14:510:14:55

# Oh-oh, oh-oh

# A mile from nowhere Oh-oh, oh-oh

0:15:040:15:07

# Ah-ah-ah

0:15:070:15:09

# What happens now?

0:15:090:15:10

# It's your lucky day, it's your lucky day

0:15:100:15:13

# So write it down

0:15:150:15:17

# Guess we're gone astray, guess we're gone astray

0:15:170:15:20

# And I wish I cried

0:15:210:15:23

# Cos it's your lucky day, it's your lucky day

0:15:230:15:27

# It wasn't mine

0:15:280:15:30

# Guess we're gone astray, Guess we're gone astray

0:15:300:15:35

# But you make me feel

0:15:350:15:37

# Mile from nowhere Oh-oh, oh-oh

0:16:030:16:06

# Ah-ah-a

0:16:060:16:08

# And I wake

0:16:080:16:10

# Realise you were gone

0:16:100:16:12

# So I sat

0:16:140:16:16

# At the edge of the lawn

0:16:160:16:19

# Days go by

0:16:210:16:23

# Still no sign

0:16:230:16:24

# Of your ghost

0:16:240:16:26

# Never call

0:16:280:16:29

# Never write

0:16:290:16:31

# It's a loss

0:16:310:16:34

0:17:380:17:40

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:17:400:17:44

James Vincent McMorrow!

0:17:470:17:49

With Rising Water, from We Move.

0:17:510:17:54

Now, at the table here, welcoming for a nice chat, Tom Chaplin!

0:17:540:17:59

Welcome to the show.

0:17:590:18:01

Good to see you here. Lovely to be here.

0:18:010:18:04

There's a bit of sparkly water, and some black fluid for me. Yes.

0:18:040:18:07

Sharpen our senses. No expense spent.

0:18:070:18:09

It's great to have you, because oft before when you've been on

0:18:090:18:12

it's been with Keane, and here you are on your own. Yes.

0:18:120:18:15

I mean, is it easy being on your own,

0:18:150:18:17

is it enjoyable being on your own?

0:18:170:18:19

It's very enjoyable.

0:18:190:18:21

I've realised what a big task it is, actually.

0:18:210:18:24

I think anyone who knows Keane will know

0:18:240:18:26

that obviously I was the singer in Keane,

0:18:260:18:28

and Tim, who played the piano, he was the songwriter.

0:18:280:18:30

So, you know, writing a record, this is the first time I've done it,

0:18:300:18:35

I've discovered it's quite an undertaking.

0:18:350:18:38

With Keane, you wrote a little bit...? Or was it really not you?

0:18:380:18:41

At the very beginning, in the early years of Keane,

0:18:410:18:44

both Tim and I wrote songs.

0:18:440:18:46

And then in the two or three years leading up to our first record,

0:18:460:18:49

Hopes And Fears, suddenly all these songs, like... He started writing

0:18:490:18:52

all these songs like Everybody's Changing and Somewhere Only We Know.

0:18:520:18:55

And I thought, "Do you know what,

0:18:550:18:57

"I'm not sure I can keep up with this, you know? It's just too good."

0:18:570:18:59

And so I just... I sort of retreated really, and went to just singing.

0:18:590:19:04

And what made you decide you wanted to do a record on your own?

0:19:040:19:06

Well, you know, I'm a creative soul.

0:19:060:19:09

And I just, you know, have had this sort of burning desire

0:19:090:19:13

that's grown and grown and grown over the years, you know,

0:19:130:19:16

and I just felt it was time to give it a shot.

0:19:160:19:20

It's quite an emotional sort of record, isn't it, would you say?

0:19:200:19:23

It's an incredibly personal record.

0:19:230:19:25

You know, as you may remember, from about sort of ten years ago,

0:19:250:19:28

I had my kind of first problems with drug addiction.

0:19:280:19:31

And that was a problem that never went away for me,

0:19:310:19:35

it kept resurfacing again and again over the years.

0:19:350:19:38

And of course the thing is

0:19:380:19:39

that each time comes back, it's worse.

0:19:390:19:42

And 2014

0:19:420:19:44

when I'd sort of decided I was going to start making this solo album,

0:19:440:19:49

and the same year my daughter was born,

0:19:490:19:50

you know, should have been a great year.

0:19:500:19:52

But unfortunately my problems kind of resurfaced in a major way.

0:19:520:19:55

And, you know, I ended up nearly killing myself, basically.

0:19:550:19:59

And I got to a point where I thought, "If I carry on,

0:19:590:20:03

"I will be dead or certainly will lose everything."

0:20:030:20:05

But you're on the right track now, thank God.

0:20:050:20:07

Well, yeah, and the record

0:20:070:20:09

is the story of getting well from that position.

0:20:090:20:11

Well, we've got a bit of footage. We're going to go down memory lane,

0:20:110:20:14

and here is This Is The Last Time,

0:20:140:20:15

when you were on the show a few years ago.

0:20:150:20:18

# The last time

0:20:180:20:21

# You fall on me for anything you like

0:20:210:20:26

# Your one last line

0:20:260:20:28

# You fall on me for anything you like

0:20:280:20:33

# And years make everything all right

0:20:330:20:36

# You fall on me for anything you like

0:20:360:20:39

# And I No, I don't mind... #

0:20:390:20:45

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:470:20:48

Aw...!

0:20:480:20:50

And that's...

0:20:510:20:53

That is a hard act to follow cos it's a great band, isn't it?

0:20:530:20:56

Yes. But your new band sounds great. They're wonderful, yeah.

0:20:560:20:59

You're going to be going on tour, doing lots of shows.

0:20:590:21:02

Yes, we're going out this month in fact.

0:21:020:21:04

Plenty of stuff basically for the next year,

0:21:040:21:06

we're going to be on the road.

0:21:060:21:07

Now, last week, Wiley was on. Right.

0:21:070:21:10

And I was asking him what he did to relax.

0:21:100:21:12

And his chief source of relaxation

0:21:120:21:15

was eating fish and chips.

0:21:150:21:17

Right. I don't know, is there something you like to do to relax?

0:21:170:21:20

Not eating fish - I GO fishing. Oh, really?

0:21:200:21:22

Yeah, I go on these week-long trips to France, with a bunch of mates

0:21:220:21:26

and sit on the bank, and I just find it a very kind of relaxing pursuit.

0:21:260:21:30

It's like nothing else I do.

0:21:300:21:33

Do you catch much, or is it about the time?

0:21:330:21:35

No, it's about the time, really. Yeah.

0:21:350:21:37

I mean, you're trying to catch these specimen fish that are sort of

0:21:370:21:39

50 lbs or 60 lbs, you can barely pick them up.

0:21:390:21:42

But I don't have much luck.

0:21:420:21:43

And do you scoff the fish that you eat?

0:21:430:21:45

No. That would be bad form, I think. Would it? OK, just checking.

0:21:450:21:48

It's just about catching specimens...

0:21:480:21:49

I was thinking of putting you and Wiley together,

0:21:490:21:52

you know, you could catch the fish and relax together.

0:21:520:21:54

Sounds like a plan.

0:21:540:21:56

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:260:22:30

# Let us pause in life's pleasures

0:22:480:22:53

# And count its many tears

0:22:530:22:56

# While we all sup sorrow with the poor

0:22:560:23:02

# There's a song that will linger

0:23:030:23:08

# Forever in our ears

0:23:080:23:11

# Oh! Hard times

0:23:110:23:15

# Come again no more

0:23:150:23:17

# It's the song, the sigh of the weary

0:23:190:23:26

# Hard times, hard times

0:23:280:23:33

# Come again no more

0:23:330:23:35

# Many days you've lingered

0:23:350:23:40

# Around my cabin door

0:23:400:23:43

# Oh! Hard times

0:23:430:23:46

# Come again no more

0:23:460:23:50

# While we seek mirth and beauty

0:24:020:24:06

# And music light and gay

0:24:060:24:09

# There are frail forms waiting at the door

0:24:090:24:16

# And their voices may be silent

0:24:170:24:21

# But their pleading faces say

0:24:210:24:25

# Oh! Hard times

0:24:250:24:28

# Come again no more

0:24:280:24:32

# And that sigh that is wafted

0:25:050:25:08

# Across the troubled waves

0:25:080:25:12

# It's a wail that is heard across the shores

0:25:120:25:20

# It's a dirge that's murmured

0:25:200:25:24

# Around the lowly graves

0:25:240:25:28

# Oh! Hard times

0:25:280:25:31

# Come again no more

0:25:310:25:35

# It's the song, the sigh of the weary

0:25:350:25:43

# Hard time, hard times

0:25:450:25:49

# Come again no more

0:25:490:25:52

# Many days you've lingered

0:25:520:25:56

# Too long around my door

0:25:560:25:59

# Oh! Hard times

0:25:590:26:03

# Come again no more

0:26:030:26:09

# Oh! Hard times

0:26:180:26:22

# Come again

0:26:220:26:24

# No more. #

0:26:240:26:30

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:26:300:26:34

# Buried in the rubble There's a boy in trouble

0:26:500:26:54

# Reaching for a piece of the sky

0:26:540:26:57

# Clawing at the wreckage, sending out a message

0:26:580:27:02

# Dying to get back to the light

0:27:020:27:05

# Lost in time

0:27:060:27:11

# Long forgotten, hung forever

0:27:110:27:14

# On the line

0:27:140:27:18

# Still waiting behind

0:27:180:27:22

# Still waiting

0:27:230:27:26

# Forever left to wonder why

0:27:270:27:31

# Still waiting

0:27:310:27:33

# In truth I know that really

0:27:350:27:38

# I'm still out there, still waiting

0:27:380:27:43

# A wandering ghost for evermore

0:27:430:27:47

# Still out there, still waiting

0:27:470:27:51

# I feel like I've been here before

0:27:510:27:55

# I had never reckoned ever coming second

0:28:030:28:07

# Stretching to get over the line

0:28:070:28:09

# But I'm all in pieces, sick as all my secrets

0:28:100:28:15

# Still now how they weigh on my mind

0:28:150:28:18

# Lost in time

0:28:190:28:23

# Long forgotten, hung forever

0:28:230:28:27

# On the line

0:28:270:28:31

# Still waiting behind

0:28:310:28:34

# Still waiting

0:28:350:28:38

# Forever left to wonder why

0:28:390:28:44

# Still waiting

0:28:440:28:46

# In truth, I know that really

0:28:470:28:51

# I'm still out there, still waiting

0:28:510:28:56

# A wandering ghost for evermore

0:28:560:29:00

# Still out there, still waiting

0:29:000:29:04

# I feel like I've been here before

0:29:040:29:07

# Phantoms in the shadows howl

0:29:070:29:11

# To devils on the edge of town

0:29:110:29:14

# Passing through the city walls

0:29:150:29:19

# Dancing down the hollow halls

0:29:190:29:23

# Vultures in the inky haze

0:29:240:29:27

# Circle where my body lays

0:29:280:29:31

# I've got to get a message out

0:29:310:29:34

# Pull me from the wreckage now

0:29:360:29:40

# Still waiting

0:29:400:29:42

# Forever left to wonder why

0:29:440:29:48

# Still waiting

0:29:480:29:51

# In truth I know that really

0:29:520:29:56

# I'm still out there, still waiting

0:29:560:30:00

# A wandering ghost for evermore

0:30:000:30:04

# Still out there, still waiting

0:30:040:30:08

# I feel like I've been here before. #

# Outside

0:31:010:31:06

# A sinking feeling

0:31:080:31:13

# Hey

0:31:130:31:14

# Cos we

0:31:140:31:16

# Hide

0:31:180:31:19

# Hey

0:31:200:31:21

# A car crash

0:31:210:31:23

# Our last chance

0:31:240:31:27

# People love their own voice more than anything

0:31:270:31:30

# People laugh

0:31:300:31:31

# People scream

0:31:310:31:32

# Listen to them

0:31:320:31:34

# I wouldn't listen to them

0:31:340:31:37

# Listen up, listen up

0:31:370:31:39

# Ah!

0:31:390:31:40

# Listen up If you stay awake

0:31:400:31:43

# Keep the faith

0:31:430:31:44

# People fade

0:31:440:31:45

# I can't change

# I can't change

0:31:490:31:51

# Change

0:31:510:31:52

# Change

0:31:530:31:54

# I can't change

0:31:550:31:57

# Bigger than a miracle

0:31:590:32:05

# She said

# I want to live it out I want to live it out

0:32:060:32:12

# Stronger than a chemical

0:32:120:32:18

# She said

0:32:180:32:19

# I want to live it out I want to live it out

0:32:190:32:26

# Hey

0:32:260:32:27

# Cos inside

0:32:270:32:31

# My wishful thinking

0:32:330:32:39

# Hey

0:32:390:32:40

# Yeah we

0:32:400:32:41

# We try

0:32:430:32:45

# Hey

0:32:450:32:46

# To hold back

0:32:460:32:50

# Attacks

0:32:500:32:52

# People walk the same road every single day

0:32:520:32:55

# People laugh

0:32:550:32:57

# Scream

0:32:570:32:58

# Listen to them

0:32:580:32:59

# I wouldn't listen to them

0:33:000:33:02

# Listen up, listen up

0:33:020:33:05

# Ah!

0:33:050:33:06

# Listen up if you stay awake

# I want to live it out I want to live it out

0:33:320:33:38

# Stronger than a chemical

0:33:380:33:43

# She said

0:33:430:33:45

# I want to live it out I want to live it out

0:33:450:33:51

# A killer in the roar

0:33:510:33:52

# And I think he said that nothing can wait

0:33:520:33:55

# Can it break?

0:33:550:33:57

# Ah

0:33:570:33:58

# Nothing in the world is safe

0:33:580:33:59

# I know that nothing can wait

0:33:590:34:02

# It can break

0:34:020:34:04

# Feeling like a snake

0:34:040:34:06

# I know nothing can wait

0:34:060:34:08

# It could break

0:34:080:34:10

# Walking in a sale of anonymous

0:34:110:34:13

# And nothing can wait

0:34:130:34:15

# It could break

0:34:150:34:16

# Cos I can't change

0:34:190:34:22

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:35:000:35:04

Thank you, Twin Atlantic!

0:35:040:35:06

Next, a man that can often be seen singing with Incognito.

0:35:100:35:15

A man with an incredible voice,

0:35:150:35:17

he has now got his own solo record out, Keep Pushing.

0:35:170:35:21

We welcome the wonderful voice of Tony Momrelle!

0:35:210:35:25

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:35:250:35:29

# When the sun has gone

0:35:430:35:49

# And the shadows of the night

0:35:500:35:56

# Are closing in on you again

0:35:560:36:01

# If you've lost all hope

0:36:020:36:07

# And you feel that you cannot cope

0:36:070:36:11

# With the mountain

0:36:110:36:15

# That stands in your way

0:36:150:36:18

# Remember

0:36:200:36:25

# Remember

0:36:250:36:28

# That I am here

0:36:280:36:33

# I've seen the wounds

0:36:370:36:42

# I've seen the journey within the tears

0:36:420:36:48

# That falls down your face

0:36:490:36:54

# And if you happen to fall

0:36:540:36:57

# Happen to fall

0:36:570:36:59

# Lift your head and rise again

0:36:590:37:02

# Though you stumbled

0:37:020:37:06

# You have not lost the race

0:37:060:37:11

# Be strong

0:37:110:37:15

# And remember

0:37:150:37:18

# That I am here

0:37:180:37:25

# Ohhh

0:37:250:37:27

# The storms may come

0:37:270:37:30

# And the sky may fall

0:37:300:37:34

# But in the midst of all the madness

0:37:340:37:38

# Yes, through it all

0:37:380:37:42

# Remember

0:37:420:37:45

# That I am on your side

0:37:450:37:49

# Remember

0:37:490:37:52

# That the storm will subside

0:37:520:37:56

# And ohhh

0:37:560:38:02

# Oooh

0:38:020:38:06

# That my love

0:38:080:38:12

# Is here. #

0:38:130:38:21

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:38:300:38:34

# He was not the kind of man

0:38:560:39:00

# That would walk you to school hand-in-hand

0:39:010:39:06

# He was hard work, leather and tan

0:39:070:39:11

# And he spoke with a throatful of sand

0:39:130:39:17

# Me, I'd hang onto every word

0:39:180:39:22

# You never know what you might learn

0:39:240:39:28

# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down

0:39:280:39:33

# Never put a blade in the ground

0:39:340:39:38

# Always look a man right square in the eye

0:39:400:39:45

# Don't let the good life pass you by

0:39:470:39:53

# Any little problem of mine

0:40:040:40:07

# He'd spit and say, "Boy, you'll be fine"

0:40:090:40:13

# He knew that there'd come a time

0:40:140:40:18

# When I'd find real mountains to climb

0:40:200:40:24

# Life can be cruel to us all

0:40:250:40:29

# Sooner or later we fall

0:40:310:40:35

# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down

0:40:350:40:39

# Never put a blade in the ground

0:40:410:40:45

# Always look a man right square in the eye

0:40:470:40:51

# Don't let the good life pass you by

0:40:540:40:59

# I only ever once saw him cry

0:41:310:41:34

# The day that his own mother died

0:41:360:41:39

# Just one tear in the corner of his eye

0:41:400:41:45

# And he smiled and said softly, "Goodbye"

0:41:460:41:50

# Me, I've got two of my own

0:41:520:41:55

# And a love that is solid as stone

0:41:570:42:02

# Like a stone

0:42:020:42:05

# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down

0:42:050:42:09

# Never put a blade in the ground

0:42:100:42:14

# Always look a man right square in the eye

0:42:160:42:21

# Don't let the good life pass you by. #

0:42:230:42:28

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:400:42:44

Blackberry Smoke!

0:42:470:42:48

The Good Life, from their album Like An Arrow.

0:42:500:42:52

Now, at the piano, I meet, briefly, the wonderful Madeleine Peyroux!

0:42:520:42:57

It's great to see you and have you back on the show

0:42:580:43:01

after a short period of missing you.

0:43:010:43:04

You've got this record out now, Secular Hymns, great record.

0:43:040:43:08

Lots of great songs on it. Where did you record this record?

0:43:080:43:12

Here in England, in a little church in Great Milton, Oxfordshire.

0:43:120:43:16

Right. So recorded in a church,

0:43:160:43:18

but is it next to a three-star Michelin restaurant?

0:43:180:43:20

Oh, yeah.

0:43:200:43:21

JOOLS LAUGHS Oh, yeah.

0:43:210:43:23

Cos it's very important, that -

0:43:230:43:24

musicians like nice food, don't they?

0:43:240:43:26

So it's very nice to sort of put the two together. Yeah.

0:43:260:43:29

Well, it actually worked the other way around,

0:43:290:43:31

we were invited to play there because of the restaurant.

0:43:310:43:33

Oh.

0:43:330:43:34

Which I... Maybe that's why it was so cool.

0:43:340:43:37

And you've always found great songs,

0:43:370:43:40

and you've gone to the... to the song face

0:43:400:43:43

and found early wonderful songs.

0:43:430:43:45

Where did you find some of the ones for this one?

0:43:450:43:47

Where did you look for them?

0:43:470:43:48

Oh, gosh. You know, that's a good question.

0:43:480:43:50

I just know that they're...

0:43:500:43:52

When I found out that they were out there,

0:43:520:43:54

it was important to try and get something.

0:43:540:43:57

Like, I discovered Linton Kwesi Johnson,

0:43:570:43:58

who's not really well known in the States,

0:43:580:44:01

via a French guy.

0:44:010:44:03

And then the Tom Waits tune, I've been trying to do for 20 years.

0:44:030:44:07

So it's all mixed up. Yeah.

0:44:070:44:09

And then there's really old things, there's a Lil Green song,

0:44:090:44:11

some Lucky Millinder, and that Sister Rosetta Tharpe song,

0:44:110:44:14

and all of that, and Bill Doggett, all of these really early things...

0:44:140:44:17

Yes. ..from the sort of '30s and '40s.

0:44:170:44:19

And it's all, but it all sounds like one...

0:44:190:44:21

When did you first start to hear that old type of music?

0:44:210:44:24

Well, my dad was born in New Orleans,

0:44:240:44:26

and he used to sit around the house and play, you know,

0:44:260:44:30

some early blues and jazz,

0:44:300:44:33

and kind of a mixture with Texarkana, too,

0:44:330:44:35

cos he used to live down there.

0:44:350:44:37

So it all kind of...

0:44:370:44:38

Kind of mixed together, and then there was a little Ravel

0:44:380:44:41

every once in a while, and Tchaikovsky, or something like that.

0:44:410:44:44

But it was all over the place,

0:44:440:44:45

and he would listen to records over and over and over again.

0:44:450:44:49

And he wasn't a musician, so go figure. Yeah.

0:44:490:44:52

And is it true that early on,

0:44:520:44:54

you played as a street musician in Paris? I did. How...

0:44:540:44:57

What was... What was that about? What were you doing?

0:44:570:44:59

Well, you know, I guess because American jazz isn't really as

0:44:590:45:03

celebrated as it could be, that's my opinion, in the United States.

0:45:030:45:07

So when I moved to Paris and I had heard this music at home,

0:45:070:45:11

like Fats Waller songs, and then I saw Americans,

0:45:110:45:14

and maybe some Europeans, also, playing them on the street.

0:45:140:45:18

Probably because there's a tourist scene,

0:45:180:45:20

but there was also already a tradition of just enjoying music,

0:45:200:45:24

sort of like what you do,

0:45:240:45:26

before you were doing it, probably. Yeah, exactly.

0:45:260:45:28

Well, somebody was doing it before... Putting a show on. Yeah.

0:45:280:45:31

Exactly. Putting a show on. Making...

0:45:310:45:33

Connecting that music with people.

0:45:330:45:34

And what are you going to play for us next?

0:45:340:45:36

Well, we're going to do a song together, right?

0:45:360:45:39

The Sister Rosetta Tharpe tune? Exactly. Shout Sister...

0:45:390:45:42

Which is... Lucky Millinder, the big band did it, didn't they? Yeah.

0:45:420:45:45

And it's really a great piece.

0:45:450:45:47

And you know, how she sort of was one of the first...

0:45:470:45:51

if not THE first woman to lead her own... Playing guitar and...

0:45:510:45:57

Yeah. ..you know, make a name for herself.

0:45:570:45:59

And now, it's finally going to be women's time soon, right?

0:45:590:46:01

Yeah, that's right. At least, in America. She did...

0:46:010:46:03

Yeah, she did invent all of that. Which, I mean, invent....

0:46:030:46:06

She was one of the, she was playing rock and roll

0:46:060:46:07

before it was all called rock and roll and...

0:46:070:46:09

I'm telling you, women are behind it, sometimes. That's right.

0:46:090:46:12

They're going like this, now.

0:46:120:46:14

I think it means that they all agree with us very much. OK.

0:46:140:46:17

Thank you for joining us. Madeleine Peyroux!

0:46:170:46:19

All right.

0:46:190:46:20

We'll be seeing Madeleine in a moment.

0:46:200:46:22

Now, I walk gracefully

0:46:250:46:28

and carefully up to this corner,

0:46:280:46:30

and welcome James Vincent McMorrow.

CHEERING

0:50:100:50:11

Thank you, James Vincent McMorrow.

0:50:130:50:15

We were, a moment ago, discussing this next artist's

0:50:180:50:21

wonderful new album, Secular Hymns.

0:50:210:50:23

Now, let's hear something from it.

0:50:230:50:25

And we welcome Madeleine Peyroux.

0:50:250:50:27

CHEERING

0:50:270:50:30

# Shout, sister, shout Hallelujah

0:50:390:50:42

# Shout, sister, shout

0:50:420:50:44

# Ladies, I'm talking to you

0:50:440:50:46

# Shout, sister, shout Ah, ah

0:50:460:50:49

# Tell the whole world what it's all about

0:50:490:50:52

# Well, there's a reason for living

0:50:520:50:55

# And a reason for dying

0:50:550:50:57

# And a darn good reason that a woman starts crying

0:50:570:51:00

# There's a reason for a mole and a reason for a dimple

0:51:000:51:04

# But there ain't no reason why a man's so simple

0:51:040:51:08

# Shout, sister, shout Now you know who I'm talking to

0:51:080:51:12

# Shout, sister, shout Hey, Hallelujah

0:51:120:51:15

# Shout, sister, shout

0:51:150:51:18

# Tell the whole world what it's all about

0:51:180:51:22

# Now, baby, there's a way to be brilliant

0:51:220:51:24

# And a way to be a fool

0:51:240:51:27

# A way to get to heaven Just observe the golden rule

0:51:270:51:30

# A way to get you a sweetheart and a way to get a wife

0:51:300:51:34

# The day you quit me, baby

0:51:340:51:35

# That's the way you lose your life

0:51:350:51:38

# All right Shout, sister, shout

0:51:380:51:40

# All the ladies in the house, say yeah

0:51:400:51:42

# Shout, sister, shout

0:51:420:51:44

# Hallelujah Shout, sister, shout

0:51:440:51:47

# Come on

0:51:470:51:48

# Tell the whole world what it's all about

0:51:480:51:52

# Yes, there's a reason for a mountain

0:51:520:51:54

# And a reason for a hill

0:51:540:51:57

# And a reason that the doctor gives a patient a pill

0:51:570:52:00

# There's a reason to dance and a reason to sing

0:52:000:52:03

# There ain't no reason that a band

0:52:030:52:07

# Can't swi-i-ing

0:52:070:52:10

# ALl the ladies in the house

0:52:120:52:14

# Say yeah, yeah, yeah,

0:52:140:52:17

# Yeah, yeah, yeah

0:52:170:52:20

# All right, well, we all understand the birds

0:52:220:52:25

# And we understand the bees

0:52:250:52:27

# And we all know how a rat eats cheese

0:52:270:52:30

# You understand your dog You understand your cat

0:52:300:52:33

# Fill me full of rhythm, boys

0:52:330:52:36

# They'll understand that

0:52:360:52:38

# Shout, sister, shout Oh, yeah

0:52:380:52:40

# All right now Shout, sister, shout

0:52:400:52:42

# Oh, yeah I do believe in you, Hillary

0:52:420:52:45

# Shout, sister, shout Come on, come on, yeah

0:52:450:52:48

# Tell the whole world what it's all about

0:52:480:52:51

# Now, ladies, you can shout

0:52:510:52:54

# Shout, sister

0:52:540:52:56

# Yeah, you know you can shout Shout, sister

0:52:560:53:00

# Shout it out and tell the world

0:53:000:53:02

# What it's all abou-ou-out. #

0:53:020:53:07

There we are. CHEERING

0:53:080:53:10

# It's such a beautiful world

0:53:230:53:26

# So why do I feel so down?

0:53:260:53:30

# I should be heading for somewhere

0:53:300:53:34

# Instead of spinning around round, round

0:53:340:53:38

# I'm flying out of control

0:53:380:53:40

# Headlong into the ground

0:53:420:53:45

# And all the people that love me

0:53:450:53:49

# They never know if I'm up, down or round

0:53:490:53:54

# Everything I've got

0:53:550:53:58

# I'm gonna lose the lot

0:53:580:54:02

# How I wish that I

0:54:020:54:06

# Was not

0:54:060:54:09

# Hurting everyone I know

0:54:090:54:12

# Bringing everybody down so low

0:54:120:54:17

# Stuck along a road of sadness

0:54:170:54:20

# With nowhere to go

0:54:200:54:24

# But it's a beautiful world

0:54:240:54:27

# And so I'm joining the crowd

0:54:270:54:31

# It's way too hard on my own

0:54:310:54:35

# I really need a way out, out, out

0:54:350:54:39

# Taking what I've got

0:54:400:54:44

# Happy with my lot

0:54:440:54:48

# Now I know that I am not

0:54:480:54:53

# Hurting everyone I know

0:54:550:54:58

# Bringing everybody down so low

0:54:580:55:02

# Stuck along a road of sadness

0:55:020:55:06

# With nowhere to go

0:55:060:55:09

# Here's hoping that the signs are real

0:55:090:55:13

# And tomorrow with a spring in my heel

0:55:130:55:17

# Somewhere on the road of sadness

0:55:170:55:21

# Lies a better deal

0:55:210:55:25

# Oh, I know that my hardened heart

0:55:250:55:28

# Is beating still

0:55:280:55:31

# I drove it to the point of madness

0:55:330:55:36

# Just to feel

0:55:360:55:39

# Something real

0:55:390:55:44

# Something real

0:55:470:55:52

# Hurting everyone I know

0:55:560:55:59

# Bringing everybody down so low

0:55:590:56:03

# Stuck along a road of sadness

0:56:030:56:07

# With nowhere to go

0:56:070:56:10

# Here's hoping that the signs are real

0:56:100:56:14

# And tomorrow with a spring in my heel

0:56:140:56:19

# Somewhere on the road of sadness

0:56:190:56:22

# Lies a better deal

0:56:220:56:26

# Oh, I know that my hardened heart

0:56:260:56:29

# Is beating still

0:56:290:56:33

# I drove it to the point of madness

0:56:330:56:37

# Just to feel

0:56:370:56:40

# Oh, I know that my hardened heart

0:56:410:56:44

# Is beating still

0:56:440:56:47

# I drove it to the point of madness

0:56:490:56:53

# Just to feel

0:56:530:56:56

# Something. #

0:56:560:56:59

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

# If you're over it or not?

0:57:440:57:49

# I've got that coffee grip

0:57:490:57:51

# You're waterboarding me through seasons of

0:57:530:57:56

# Breathing in that pollen and raw daydreaming

0:57:560:58:00

# Daydreaming

0:58:030:58:04

# Cos I get no sleep

0:58:080:58:10

# Days on repeat

0:58:130:58:15

# I get no sleep

0:58:180:58:21

# No sleep

# Of the Teletext youth club

0:58:350:58:39

# Eternal moan and bitch

0:58:390:58:42

# Cos we're not gonna sleep no more

0:59:280:59:33

# We're not gonna sleep no more

0:59:330:59:38

# I take pills and I drink alcohol

0:59:380:59:42
