classic of racing temples. Welcome to for Monza. An absolute mecca for

the tifosi, the Ferrari fans are here in droves, and David and Eddie

are along for the ride. As we saw there, what a story we are getting

in Formula One this year. I think we have been dished up with something

absolutely appealing. It has been cut and thrust, up and down,

friends, foes, high point and low points. It has been a fantastic

season so far. It has, and David, coming to the last track in Europe,

Monza, a proper race's track. It has got the speed and the hard braking

sections. This is the fastest track on the calendar in terms of average

speed. You will be regularly breaking from well over 210 mph into

the various big stops. It is a huge challenge for the driver's

concentration. That kind of speed, in the blink of an eye, you can

travel 15-20 metres I miss your breaking point. Huge pressure. We

are surrounded by the fans. It is a sell-out. Localise might be on the

Ferrari drivers but a lot of others are on the headline making Mercedes

boys. If you missed what happened last time out, this is it.

COMMENTATOR: Lights out, away we go, the two Mercedes up against each

it looks as though his races done. Alonso on the grass, battling with

Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button takes advantage, goes round the

outside. Alonso comes in between Beattie McLaren drivers if he can

any Jenson Button get it. The McLarens almost touching. Jenson

Button squeezed out Alonso takes the place, and Sebastian Vettel still

hunting. Daniel Ricciardo wins the Belgian Grand Prix, and Nico Rosberg

finishes second. Valtteri Bottas in third position. That that victory

for Daniel Ricciardo. -- back-to-back victories.

That was an incredible race and an incredible person to my left is

joining us now. Hello. Nice to see you. Finally found you guys, good to

be here. We just what -- we just watched what happened last time that

we could not find a better man to talk to about crashing into team

partners than yourself. Let's go back to Turkey in 2010, one of those

famous team-mate crashes which went down as a racing incident in the

end. How down as a racing incident in the

team from your perspective? Not very well! It is not easy. When you start

to fight for victories, it is not easy for the team to handle. In that

race, we had McLaren breathing down our necks with a

race, we had McLaren breathing down were not in a luxurious position of

dominating every Grand Prix. When the team-mates clash, obviously, it

provides a lot of friction inside the team. David knows, when you have

2 guys fighting for victory, it is not easy. But last time out, the

puncture changed everything, for you to go into the corner and

deliberately give someone a puncture, forget it. Nico Rosberg

damaged his wing and the puncture changed the scenario for the media

and both of their races. It is interesting you say that because if

you look at the public reaction, some people have accused Nico

Rosberg of cheating. I agree with you, you cannot target to puncture

Rosberg of cheating. I agree with somebody's rear tyre. Do you see it

as a bit clumsy, getting his elbows out, going wheel-to-wheel with

Lewis? Yes, you was on pole position but he was behind, trying to

attack. -- he was. He was frustrated, trying to force the

issue and in the end, the sidewall got to Lewis' tire and then it turns

into a bigger see no. For the team to manage that inside, then, is not

that easy. Lewis has chipped his front wing a few times coming back

You can clip your front wing off on people but try not to do it on your

team-mate. I need to ask you, moving on from there, what happens? We saw

a couple of years ago, when there was one new nose available. What

does Mercedes do now? We know Nico Rosberg is 29 points ahead. Do they

favour him? I think it is too early in the championship especially with

double points on the card at the end of the season. You can't change the

rules as the season goes on and that is what is hard in the team. Did we

know Mercedes were going to be so dominant this year? Probably not.

you control that, clear everything, and decide that you just have to go

This is how we go into the race with seven to go. After that much

discussed Mercedes incident, Nico Rosberg is now leading by 29

Red Bull. The battle for third place is tight, ten points separating

Ferrari and Williams, with McLaren in fifth and Marussia in ninth with

a couple of vital points. But of course, all the talk is about

Mercedes. Eddie has gone to find team boss Toto Wolff. Bearing in

mind everything that has happened in the last number of races, is there

anything you would have done differently now? That is a good

question. I think in the evening, when you switch off the light, you

have to reflect on what you have done well and badly and how to

improve. I think there are always things to improve. We had a very

difficult situation. It was new ground we have touched with both

drivers competing on an equal level. We let them race. Absolutely, there

are things we could have done better. The point is, when you see

that you were so outwardly critical of Nico Rosberg at the last race,

when what you said was recorded, it is not really very usual to have a

team boss criticising a driver so openly. If you remember my words, I

did not put anything on Nico because it would not have been fair. I would

have said both courted each other on the second lap was unacceptable. But

it was clearly identified with one person because you must have spoken

to him to ask him to apologise or suggest that he did. Why would you

feel the need to do that? I did not asking to apologise. We gave them a

cooling off period of a couple of days and he reflected and came back

and took it on himself. It is not a matter of 100% fault. It is who is

to blame for more than 50%. That is what he said. I personally saw it as

a 50-50 racing accident so we take on board what you said. This is

probably a difficult situation for you. With your experience, with such

a great brand, Mercedes, and two great drivers, is the role of team

boss a difficult one for you to handle? It is not only the brand,

because we represent one of the largest brands in the world but

there are many people in a factory working flat out. We had parts on

the car in Spa which was supposed to come in Monza or Singapore. People

did not go home at the weekend, they were working 24-7, and a race being

thrown away on the second lap is not what they deserve which is why maybe

we went a bit harder. But I guess this is part of my role. Final

question, everyone is on tenterhooks, you said it is not

accent double and if it continues, you have to take repercussions on

one of the drivers. Would that mean sacking one of them? They are always

a radical words. What I said is that if we cannot manage the situation,

we would continue to have cars hitting each other, definitely, the

driver line-up as to be questioned. But I'm sure this is not going to

The Mercedes battled for Spa has continued to make the headlines of

happy place. After all of these years, the difficult times, I know

how to move past things, I am excited about these seven races

Friday and had a very difficult discussion. We came up with a

It would be nice sometimes do have a chat, to shake hands and say "it was

what it was". But for some reason, he doesn't really talk much to me.

It is fun to race him. It is the new phenomenon in Formula One, Daniel

Ricciardo. Let's talk about Daniel. It seems there is fresh air within

the team, fair to say there was always a bit of tension there.

been struggling with something we need to get on top of. But on his

side, it is good for him. Honestly, it is good to see he is doing well.

bad. Very slippery, that is why we are sliding. It is tight, isn't it?

This isn't manly panty Valencia. Not an awful lot of run. You need to get

out there. Get your hands on the steering wheel and hope for the

best. Do you think I could make my living from this? Yeah, I think so.

Thanks for the advice. LAUGHTER Sebastian Vettel looking very

comfortable on the new track, David, I am not sure you are a

natural passenger, are you? Definitely not. Not a natural driver

either, I was, double when I was steering. What did you think of the

layout? Very fast opening section which will get the driver's

attention, massive left-hander on Turn 3, off camber. It will take

them to the limit. End of the lap, a bit more Mickey Mouse. This is at

the opening stage, crossed the start-finish line, very fast.

Approaching 200 miles an hour in this area, unusual for street

circuits. Think of Singapore, Valencia, they are not very fast. I

would position this is not quite Monte Carlo, but better than

Valencia. We can expect some action. It is pretty fast at the beginning.

As we get towards the end of the lap, we get into what you would

class as a more classic street circuit, the sort of thing you would

have raised on in Phoenix and places like that. 90 rights and maths. --

you would have raced. Working a lot more that last section. - rights and

lefts. Who will bat suit? Red Bull. -- who will matter sued?

There is a quick section. It looked a bit like an updated Valencia,

probably better and more structured. It will be a good

circuit, I am pleased. It is a good addition. I like going to new

places. This will be a wheelie great moment, it will be a great circuit.

It was the brand spanking news circuit of Sochi and the old cycad

of Monza has had a face-lift at the parabolic. Old circuit. Coming to

parabolic, 205 mph, hit the brakes 50 metres from the corner, fourth

gear, you are always right on the edge of oversteer. Into understeer

and onto the throttle. Squeezing it on with total commitment. Your

wheels just on this white line and on the left-hand side is grass and

gravel. If you make a mistake then there was a big accident. However,

with safety in mind they have pushed the gravel back in and put in this

tarmac area, which has taken a lot of discussions over the last few

days. Was it the right thing to do? The drivers, though, they are

pushing harder. Jenson Button said he attacked into this corner with

the knowledge that he has got get out of jail free card if it does not

work. You could not do that before. What it has done, though, it has

meant the drivers have also been thinking "how can we gain a bit of

advantage? What can we do differently? Can we run our wheels

over? Can we keep tight?". We have seen a few different lines, Daniel

Ricciardo would drop a wheel over here and then he would cut back on

the exit to try to straighten the wheel to maximise his acceleration

down the long straight up to 215 mph. You would have Nico Rosberg as

well who would just get two wheels over here and then run all the way

round and over the curve on exit to match the car float. Kevin Magnussen

was thinking of doing something different, he would drop two wheels

perfectly onto this train. Then he would use it to help him accelerate

-- onto this train. So he can get hard on the throttle earlier. For

him, hopefully gain that one mile an hour that would help him towards the

end of the straight. Has this taken some of the magic and mystique away

from this fantastic circuit at Monza? No, it hasn't. This circuit

has got much more than wonderful bit of safety tarmac area. But maybe it

has taken a bit of the edge off Parabolica. Should we walked down

here? It is very busy. Let's barge our way through, what do you think

about Parabolica? Too much or was it necessary? It was not necessary but

part of a number of things that this track has to do to satisfy Formula

One. It does not change the challenge particularly of the

profile of the corner, it means the drivers have in their mind that they

can't afford to make a mistake and get away with it. You have a

different mindset in Monaco. Make a mistake and hit the barrier. You

will always drive to the conditions. Whether it is wet, dry, whatever.

Nice little feature. It will not fundamentally change who wins or

loses this Grand Prix. The drivers can go in there a bit harder? They

can go harder. It is not a bad thing. If you look at the great

circuits on our calendar, Silverstone, Sandoval at Monaco and

last week. The Parabolica is one of those unbelievable corners. It

catches the attention of every driver. A bit of change here and

there, it doesn't matter one bit. If the excitement is still there.

is one of those circuits that tries to maintain some of the beautiful

old sections, particularly the incredible banking. They had to

resurface it, otherwise it would fall down. That is where David went

to meet up with Nico Hulkenberg, who did well here lasted, qualified

We have brought you out to the old banking because there is so much

history in Monza, very different to others, high-speed, but 84 years

ago, this is what they were racing on. I have never been here,

actually. It is quite special and good to be here. I think Monza is a

very special place. It is not easy at! LAUGHTER

India. Are you ever scared of being lost in mid-grid. There is more to

come, I think. There is with a learning process and I still feel

I'm getting better and better. -- always a learning process. I'm just

progressing, race by race. Hulkenberg has finished in fifth

place, a major result. How much is it about the dream of getting a

winning car? Force India, everyone is doing a great job, considering

the resources we have and the budget. Other teams would struggle

but history suggests that obviously, the interest must be there from

whatever team it is. At the moment, I will have to wait for the

opportunity and hopefully my time will come. Around this great track,

Monza, you will be going at well over 200 mph, breaking, consistency,

stability all those things. Any concerns or are you feeling good?

I'm not saying we're going to win but we are feeling all right. All

you young -- year-long, we have had a good car. We are just going to

stay and my Canon has a contract. Really, I think Hulkenberg will do

another year. And then see what happens. Intriguing times for him

because I think he is one of the people who could absolutely come and

be crowned world champion. It is a kind of domino effect, and we know

that after Fernando Alonso, you don't think he is going to leave

Ferrari just yet and we will be having this conversation next year

and Christian also think that none of the top drivers will move. Do you

buy into that theory as well? If you imagine it, it can happen in Formula

One but it's not just about next year. This is about understanding

performance related issues and the drivers that need release options

going forward. I'm sure Eddie would have done this. I was already signed

to McLaren while I was racing at Williams. I knew that I would be

joining them two years before I did. Teams by options on drivers. They

have the right of first refusal on things. But they have to be

negotiated. That is why McLaren are holding back. Where does that leave

Jenson Button. The biggest thing in his favour, there's only one team he

can continue with, McLaren, and I think the big advantage he has got

is the emergence or the start of the relationship with Honda, he has had

a good relationship with them, as have McLaren, and they will look for

somebody of the calibre of a world champion, somebody who is calm and

cool, to bring them through the difficult early part of the season

and the ever them. That is what I think is his biggest asset, to hope

that Honda will back him to stay there. Take a look at these chaotic

scenes outside Ferrari, that is Luca di Montezemolo, the Ferrari

president, giving a press conference, and it is absolute

madness. We will let you know if he says anything important. For now,

Williams have been looking to refit this weekend and they are lying

fourth in the Constructors' Championship. -- looking terrific.

Valtteri Bottas is lying fifth and as Tom find out -- found out, he

likes to hit his target. Pull. The beginning of last year, I

tried for the first time and got hooked immediately. It is religious

in. Also, useful for a driver, hand eye coordination, and for the

reactions. You feel the rear end of the car starting to slide, how much

do you need to correct? It just comes naturally. You need to go a

lot with just your instinct. He's very good. The first time he went

with no lessons, picked up the gun, and he was already better than me.

And I have been doing it for years. The driver and race engineer

relationship is really important. You both have to know exactly what

you are speaking about, and any message, I tell him or he tells me

in the race, we understand each other immediately. To be a good race

engineer, you need your driver to have trust in you, and vice versa.

You need to speak the same language. These kind of hobbies

together have really helpful when he's on the track. RADIO: It feels

like we can make it to the end but it's not going to be easy. Good

shooting. Now the competitive part of the day and we know how much you

love a bit of competition. What we would like you to do first is to

fire ten plays over you, to see what your strike rate is when you are

100% focused on what is going on. OK? OK.

interesting was that Valtteri Bottas could remember the messages about

cars but not the stuff about the pizza and the other rubbish. He

the heat of the moment, these guys are operating in a very tough

environment on the track with all the speed and everything going on

around them, and they can identify the things which are important to

their success on the track and disregard all the peripheral stuff.

He is no different. When he is doing so good at shooting, the last really

top man was Jackie Stewart so if you can follow Jackie, three times world

champion, he is right there. That relationship between the driver and

the race engineer is so vital and they clearly have a fantastic Bond.

Bond is absolutely the right expression. They must be friends.

They speak in the evening, when everything is calm and quiet, crazy

phone calls, and they will be working, working as one. That is

what needs to happen. Total and working, working as one. That is

absolute belief that the information he is being given is accurate and

precise and is going to be successful. They have been looking

very good in a race setting. Really, after Mercedes, Red Bull, and Jenson

button as well coming into the mix, Williams, they all look very close

with Ferrari. I'm absolutely -- I'm absolutely sure that given

and he has their spirit in his mind. It is over a positive for him.

I think Ferrari will be strong or so. Lewis Hamilton, a single front

row start in the last five and he needs to put something together

today to give him the best chance. A really good start, being on the

front row is vital. He will be on the front row, I've no doubt. He had

a little problem yesterday but it is overcome now. I think he will be on

pole. Strong words from Eddie Jordan. He's fighting form, they

have got rid of their troubles and he is there. Now it is time for

qualifying for Monza. Lee and Tom in the pit lane and David and then in

the commentary box. Here comes Q1. Home of the Italian Grand Prix,

every year from one since 1950, Monza is the fastest track on the

calendar and one of the most atmospheric. Qualifying for Round 13

of what is becoming a classic championship context takes place in

northern Italy at the Royal Park Monza. Just ten miles north-east of

Milan. We are on a layout that is little changed since 1976 when all

three chicane Bru were first used. Speeds of over 200 miles an hour --

chicanes. Recorded four times per lap. On Twitter by heavy braking

zones and momentum something corners such as the two right handers, the

Curva di Lesmo and Parabolica. Pole position has led to race victory in

each of the last four years, nine of the last 11 races here have been won

from the top spot on the grid. Today's session is crucial, Lewis

Hamilton trails Nico Rosberg by 29 points, coming into this race and

hasn't qualified his team-mate in seven events. Can he regain the

initiative today? -- outqualified. This is the old track, they will not

run on the steep banks of Monza, but they will still run on the

high-speed sections. This long start finish straight that leads to the

first chicane. We will see speeds of 220 mph. Narrow and visually

narrower as you go down towards the first corner. They have got to pick

their breaking spot with immense accuracy going. Into that section

current track conditions good -- going into that section. Temperature

is a pleasant 25 degrees. Everything is building up nicely. Nico Rosberg

did not have a good start this morning, he did not get a timed lap

in but Lewis Hamilton was fastest. It is to Lewis Hamilton's advantage

what we have seen so far. Interesting to see how the

reliability issues have played out for Mercedes in the free practice

sessions. Lewis has been somewhat more unlucky in the sessions that

count. Nico was there, analysing every week lap. Leading the time

sheets. He seemed comfortable to attack the braking zones.

It gives Lewis an advantage, knowing where the race track is on Saturday

morning as we go towards the qualifying session. Garage.

Involved with the Ferrari boss. We wonder how much longer he will be in

charge for. Looking at the champ in Schippers, Kimi Raikkonen in 10th.

Ferrari have been looking better -- Championships. Bottas was third.

Felipe Massa fourth for Williams. He was third fastest yesterday. Montoya

is here, making a rare visit from racing in the United States. The

last man to either win a race or take pole position for Williams

about this circuit. He has got himself back in shape, racing in

singles heats, he piled on the pounds when he was doing Nascar

racing for a few years. Back behind the wheel of a single seat and

winning races. Lewis Hamilton getting ready for qualifying, his

the car. Sergio Perez had a problem with his car this morning. It looks

to be in good shape now. Ready to start this session. The normal

format will see all of the cars out in the first part of qualifying. We

will lose some of them, six cars. The second part of qualifying will

come after. We have seen just how close the times are, Hamilton had a

bit of an edge over most of the others. But behind him Alonso in

second place, there was one second covering 2nd-11th position in

practice this morning. This classic view through the trees of Monza,

where speed is everything. You want to carry every kilometre an hour you

can, every mile an hour you can offer the exit of these terms. The

straights are so long -- these turns. You have a lap belt, which is

laid on the steering wheel, on the cockpit of the chassis. That delta

will tell you every few metres, whether you are faster or slower

than the previous lap. Counting to the half ten, you can see the

benefit as you reflect on the previous corner and go down the next

straight. Do I take a risk in the braking zone at the next corner? At

ten, do I risk adding another ten. If I make a mistake I will drop two.

It is an interesting mental battle, so much time to reflect on what you

are doing. Something like Monte Carlo, they are coming at you thick

and fast, the corners, you are instinctively reacting to corner,

corner, corner. You have time to look around at the trees and enjoy

the Italian summer here. It is a lovely day as we mentioned, that

tyrant, struggled a bit this morning on 11th fastest. Button was in the

top ten. He is using a harder compound tyre. Most of the top teams

hoping to get three. -- Kevin Magnussen for McLaren. -- hoping to

get through. No difference very much. Let's see what Bottas does as

he crosses the line, he goes for. Slots in behind the Mercedes of

Rosberg -- goes in fourth position. Felipe Massa on a good lap and Lewis

Hamilton looking to further improve on what he has done so far. It

highlights the fact that tyres are showing good durability. They get

the chance to take the shine off. Wind up the card to full speed.

the only driver this year to have taken pole position away from

Mercedes. He took pole position in Austria early on this season. Early

days in this qualifying session. That is a very promising performers

from the Brazilian. We are looking at Bottas, followed by Fernando

Alonso. On a lap slightly better in his first sector. Hasn't made any

thing in the middle sector. He is sixth. Bottas gets well out of the

way not only to make sure he doesn't block Alonso, he does not want to

give him slipstream. He pulled over to the left-hand side. Alonso has

got to punch a hole in the air on his own using as much of the circuit

as they are allowed on the exit of Parabolica.

With that lap, no improvement, he stays sick but we have to focus on

the top 16 now. RADIO: That was a pretty shocking lap. Hamilton not

happy with his performance. It did not improve on that last lap.

Rosberg improves, goes fastest, 1:25 .493. He gains a little bit ahead of

Felipe Massa. Jules Bianchi is currently in the drop zone in the

Marussia, as is Adrian Sutil. Max Chilton in the other Marussia, both

caters and the other one has not set a time because they are still trying

to fix the car but it looks as though Romain Grosjean will be out

of the garage soon. He is the other one who has not yet set a time to

see him into the top 16. Speed track figures coming up on screen. At the

moment, Rosberg topping it -- speed trap. Just over

Mercedes in the top four at this stage and Renault fifth with

Jean-Eric Vergne. You can see how small the margins are, with the DRS

flap opens for Sebastian Vettel. They have got the minimum amount of

drag on the car. Christian Horner commented... He made a mistake, ran

onto the kerb. Christian Horner says they compromised a bit of speed, as

he comes out of the rundown to Parabolica. Good overhead shots as

he comes down into the corner that has been a bigger area of tarmac at

the bottom of the picture. RADIO: Is the time good enough? You are in

pole position at the moment, and well inside the cut-off. Years safe,

through to the next part of qualifying. Sebastian Vettel, no

change on that lap, only eighth, and Daniel Ricciardo is tense, Raikkonen

in the top ten but in the danger zone. Pastor Maldonado only 16 at

Hamilton? Yes, and he goes fastest, 1:20 5.3, one tenth faster than Nico

Rosberg has set. It is going to be that close. Interesting to see how

many laps worth of fuel they are running with the knowledge that they

need to try to get their tyres optimised, recharge into the

batteries perfect, and get the clear lap. Romain Grosjean is being sent

on his way. Tom, interesting to see they have put it straight out onto

the softer tyres. No real surprise because they need a

lot this weekend with the performance, have not got the

slower than Pastor Maldonado. -- he was. It will be a big ask for him to

or two tenths. We did not get the radio identity before Sebastian

Vettel started talking but he was giving the team some feedback. For a

half minutes to go and Nico Hulkenberg, currently down in 13th,

and as ever, the two Force India cars quite evenly matched, host --

both of their 1.5 seconds off the pace that has been set by the

Mercedes of Hamilton and Rosberg. But Nico Hulkenberg qualified well

last year for Sauber so we know he can deliver a fast lap. That

feedback from Sebastian can deliver a fast lap. That

suggest he thinks he is still a couple of tenths away from the

perfect lap but it suggests he is in the hunt with maybe McLaren for

where they are going to line up, keeping Jenson Button company in

fifth place and Kevin Magnussen right behind them, like the like of

lap time almost. Door buster it, coming into the first chicane. This

is all about rolling the speed, nice and

good lap by Jean-Eric Vergne. Quite a few of the Q1 sessions this year

he has done well, topped a couple of them. He moves up to fifth, as

Adrian Sutil is 16th but only just say. Maldonado still in 17th. Let's

see what Romain Grosjean does. Oh, dear, that is disappointing at his

first attempt, only 19th, not as quick as Jules Bianchi in the

Marussia. We did not see the lap so let's give him the benefit of the

doubt. Maybe a cat was crossing the circuit or something! Let's see what

he can wind it up into because he will only get another lap. Maldonado

is on a flying lap but already half a second down on where he needs to

be. Lotus are in dire trouble with their performance of the car. A

seasoned observer out on track yesterday said he had never seen a

car look so bad on the track. They are really struggling. They are not

over winter but it does not seem to allow them to get right up there in

the straight-line speed trap. The overall package, even with the

skinny rear wing, is generating too much drag. Not enough and Maldonado

is still in the drop zone by half a second, not even close in terms of

Monza qualifying. That is a massive gap, half a second, and it does not

look as though Grosjean will do any better. He is probably doing a

recovery lap at the moment to get fully charged for the next lap, and

he will have one more chance. RADIO: For the final timed lap, trying to

get in front Bianchi. I don't think Bianchi will help him that much

because he is one of the main rivals at this point. He got out of the

way, didn't he? That was a slightly awkward place to get out of the way.

You never really want to do that into a braking zone, pulling over

and allowing a driver the inside. Will Grosjean complain about that?

Is there a case for saying he should not have moved about of way? That

was Daniel caveat in the Toro Rosso, that had an issue with it. --

Daniel is excessively from the first

chicane. From that distance, you will pick up a small slipstream, and

that is the Marussia ahead of him, as they come down approaching the

second chicane. Let's see if we get the first sector times. 28.1. Still

outside the opportunity to progress. Not in a happy place at all with

that car. It is really not good. RADIO: Do not changed it any more,

pastel. We may have a problem with the car. -- do not change gear any

more. It sounds like he has some kind of failure. Hulkenberg has

improved with ninth place on the last lap but it does not make much

difference because he's all ready through. Maldonado is definitely out

as he has seen the chequered flag and he is not in the top 16. It

looks as though we will lose both Lotus cars, good work by Jules

Bianchi to split them but it is a question over whether Grosjean has

done enough to go ahead of the Marussia. Kobayashi has gone quicker

than Max Chilton but they are all rushing out on their final lap. He

is slower in the middle section than his previous lap, Grosjean, sauna C

has done something spectacular through Parabolica, this will not

improve. Well, marginally, the 10th quicker. Bianchi has come in and

cannot further improved but he has just been pipped. For the Lotus

management, this is not looking good. Both cars out in Q1. Let's see

if there are any changes. Kobayashi has grabbed the initiative over

Marussia, right at the last-gasp, there, and has gone 19th, which

means that cater still retain their record of always out-qualifying

Marussia at Monza. -- Caterham. We have not seen them ahead of them

very much in recent events. That was a team effort because Eriksson was

just ahead of him and they needed everything. Toby Ashy has been

consistently quicker but he has played the team role perfectly.

Mercedes have topped the times, Hamilton and Rosberg but we have now

dropped six cars, Pastor Maldonado, roaming Grosjean, Kirby Ashy, who is

fastest of the Marussia and Caterham grouping, Jules Bianchi, Max Chilton

and Marcus Ericsson. Sunglasses appreciation going on. No

huge surprises in Q1. We are joined by Juan Pablo Montes, seven wins in

Formula One. And the Indy 500. You have had some classic wins but which

is the most special? Between the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500,

this place was a special, especially with my first win in 2001. It was

one of those things, it was more than exciting, it was like,

"finally". You go so close so many times and when you get the first

win, it is special. Williams, the great name of the past, you were

there and they fell away for a while and now they are back. How exciting

is it for them? It is exciting and Frank Williams loves motor racing

and Formula One. When you see them running badly, you feel bad for

them. I know how hard they work to get where they are. It is pretty

impressive. You were the last guy before Pastor Maldonado got a win of

years ago to get a win for Williams. Do you keep an eye on Formula One?

We don't see you here very often. This is my first time back since my

last race. Really? With the Nascar schedule, you don't have time off,

really, and within the car, we just finished last weekend and I've got a

bit of time off. I can come back and see friends. It is 36 weeks racing,

full-time job. It was nice, 19 races but only 16 weekend, so some

double-headers. Do you have time to keep a check is what -- on what is

going on? What do you think of Formula One at the moment? It is

pretty cool. Everyone is talking about the noise it is a different

but the technology is unbelievable how far they have gone. Do you ever

see a situation, coming back here because you had such a huge fan base

amazing, like in Williams, I went to the GB two, to watch the practice in

the pit lane, and I saw Kyle and some of the other guys that worked

Luca di Montezemolo, who was talking to Bernie Ecclestone a few minutes

ago and he has been very vocal about what he wants out of the sport,

in-season testing, giving the fans what they want, presumably, he

thinks they want to see Ferrari at the top end rather than Mercedes but

COMMENTATOR: The second part of qualifying due to get under way

shortly. Lewis Hamilton was fastest in Q1 by Ada for margin over his

team-mate, Nico Rosberg but everything is set back to zero and

we start again to try to get into the top ten. The gap or 0.13

seconds. A quick note about temp to -- Kvyat he was sixth fastest, you

can go through qualifying as normal but we know that he will have a ten

place grid penalty because he is now on his sixth engine in his car. It

is one of the elements of the new power units. Once you have used five

and you go on to number six, power units. Once you have used five

means an immediate penalty for the next race. That is never a good

thing for a driver going into qualifying, knowing that whatever

you manage to achieve, you will be dropping down. On a circuit like

this, although we have a lot of high-speed and double DRS, it is

difficult to make the pass. That is nothing to do with him particularly

as a driver. It is just a result of the Renault issues they have been

having this year. We know that Red Bull expect to take a penalty before

the end of the season Prozac to the same thing, using

the end of the season Prozac to the any one element that makes up the

power unit. Has everybody so far got a

trouble-free run? It is looking that way. But they will put on the medium

tyre, it will be too close to get Q3 on the hard tyre. From the practice

delivering pretty good performances. Magnussen taking up a step in Q1,

changes. Danny Platt, he has gone quickly so far but he will have

eight grid penalty from wherever he qualifies. Nothing to stop him

getting into the top ten -- Daniil Kvyat. If you can repeat his

performance. Sean Eric Vernon, still no news of his future career, he

will be replaced at Toro Rosso. -- Jean-Eric Vergne. No sign of him

getting a seat elsewhere. There are a number of other drivers that have

achieved more, a number of other drivers that have

him. Showing more promise. Floating around. I fear to say that he is

probably doubtful to retain a seat at Formula One, just looking at the

current marketplace. Nico Hulkenberg quick to get out and see what he can

do in the Force India. Force India had a great qualifying years in

2009, when Adrian Sutil put the car second on the grid. That was his

best ever qualifying performance and went on to finish in fourth place.

We will not expect that kind of performance from Force India. They

want to be in the top ten, that is their challenge. Hulkenberg was 10th

quickest this morning, we will see if he has enough. A close battle

between Force India and McLaren in the Constructors' Championship. Only

a couple of points between them, McLaren on 105, Force India on 103.

He is in the back part of the circuit. Through the second Curva di

Lesmo. Setting the initial times we will get an idea about the sort of

change in track performance. Doesn't tend to change very much here,

David? Some tracks get much quick as we go through the session. Not much

track ever loose and. The circuit is that it acted -- tracked evolution.

In terms of creating grit it is not very dusty. -- grip. The driver

needs momentum around the lap. 24.371 in the first part of

qualifying. He goes on to what will be... Slow lap. Timed lap but 1.31.

On the set of tyres he used. Checking out something perhaps on

the car. Not a full on attempts to set a quick lap time. Ron Dennis.

The man back in control at McLaren. We know there are driver talks going

on at the moment but still no word as to whether Kevin Magnussen and

Jenson Button will definitely still be driving for that team next year.

Difficult to imagine they will replace both drivers. They might

keep both. RADIO: The first lap, number four. Two laps available.

Interesting mix of languages, the Italian and English. The language of

the team is English. With the amount of English engineers and senior

management around. But they drop in and out, when it is the direct

conversation with the driver. Daniil Kvyat is the one we are watching. He

has impressed us on several occasions. Quite evenly handled

battle between the two team-mates in terms of their qualifying

performances so far this season. Daniil Kvyat and John Eric Verne are

six apiece. A decider. Plenty more races -- Jean-Eric Vergne. He has

been able to manage Vergne at this stage. Vergne was able to mix it

with Daniel Ricciardo when they were team-mates. Daniel showing more

consistency in his qualifying performances. But in the end they

have made their choice they will get another opportunity. They will have

Max Chris tapping in, the youngest ever Grand Prix driver.

Hulkenberg is not as quick, Force India not as quick as Toro Rosso.

This year is coming through. Adrian Sutil slower. Rosberg is immediately

faster. Moving into new territory, that is the fastest lap we have

seen. Alonso is eight tenths slower in the Ferrari. We will have to see

where Williams is, close from Bottas, two tenths of a second

behind Rosberg. Interesting to see the performance gains coming out of

the option tyre. More than I would have expected. Around the half

second, six tenths mark taking a step forward. Felipe Massa couple of

tenths down on his team-mate. Fastest in that sector, first as

qualifying -- same as first qualifying. Massa has not down

nicely for S1. Is all about straight-line speed and braking zone

in the first chicane. Fernando Alonso. A bit of a wobble

mid-corner. Backs new run of certainly helped him. -- that new he

has the confidence, the oversteer into the apex. Previously, you would

have had to lift out. You know you can run a bit wide onto what is

effectively still tarmac although it is painted green. It is some type of

grip paint. I must research what they call that grip paint, never

know how to call it. RADIO: One timed on the next tyre. Unnecessary

to take the risk of that time? Can we practice with two? Let's discuss

it in the garage, Nico. We have a concern that you will be out of

position relative to other cars. Tony Ross chatting away to Nico

Rosberg as they chat about the best way to go about this. Rosberg is

quickest at the moment. It is about getting into the top ten. Several

drivers still to record a time including Lewis Hamilton. Magnussen

has not recorded a time that they are all on circuit. Nobody has been

left stuck in the pit lane. We should get a view more indicators in

a moment or two. Plenty of time for a second opportunity to come out on

a new set of tyres -- get a view. Rosberg with the initial pacesetting

advantage in Q2. -- get a few. Who will get into the top ten shoot

out? That is the question. Hamilton now picking up the pace. On his

quick lap. Vergne has gone into eighth position. Daniil Kvyat and

Vergne, three thousands of a second between the two Toro

Vergne, three thousands of a second team-mates. As we now keep an eye on

Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull. A matter of millimetres around the 3.6

mile lap. Astonishing that they can be that close. Let's ride with

Sebastian Vettel, tough time this year.

Five slash seven in his qualifying battle with his team-mate Brickyard

-- 5-7. Always good at Monza, he took his first ever pole position

for Toro Rosso and his first ever victory -- team-mate, Ricciardo.

Down on the fastest lap. Daniel Ricciardo is on a map of the same

time, we will try to get an idea of how they are comparing. He was a

10th quicker in the first sector and virtually identical in the middle

sector. Hamilton has gone fastest of anybody in the middle sector.

That'll is using that bit of extra road, being a bit more circumspect

-- Vettel. About the odd special grass. Sixth quickest, what is

Ricciardo do? -- about the artificial. Just a fraction slower.

Sixth and seventh. Magnussen comes through. Hamilton is quickest.

1.24.5. A temp fastest Twenty20, Nico Rosberg. Both progressing

through to the top ten -- one tenth fastest for Hamilton. Let's not

discount Williams, could still be in with a shout. Ahead the Red Bulls.

Pretty close in the middle part of the top ten. Fascinating. Pole

position. I agree. It will come down to the Grand Prix drivers getting a

clean lap. We have seen Hamilton dropped the ball a few

clean lap. We have seen Hamilton his own hands. Interesting.

Reflecting on what... Montoya was saying. For him, it is clear that he

picks Rosberg is stronger. RADIO: Just over a 10th, Nico. Make sure

you don't hang around coming back. Get a second run in. Time is ticking

away but he should be OK. Not in the top ten yet after this first run,

Magnussen just outside. Button is comfortable in six. Daniil Kvyat Has

been pushed down because everybody has moved up. Daniil Kvyat And

Vergne out of the top ten, and Hulkenberg and the two Stauber boo,

no great surprise. Peres on his first run Mr laps this morning, did

not get a simulating in qualifier -- Peres on his first lap missed. He

drove a great race a couple of years ago, finished second. . He feels at

home here. -- Peres Daniil a strong performance. Force India

not developing that package. As aggressively as McLaren. They know

they have slipped back in that battle. It is important if they can

keep in the hunt in the Constructors' Championship the

battle between McLaren and Force India could keep going to the wire.

It is close, Williams-Ferrari, for third place. Williams and Ferrari

closely matched. Raikkonen is the one in

closely matched. Raikkonen is the we Niki Lauda and Toto Wolff. The

closely matched. Raikkonen is the management at Mercedes. -- between

Mickey louder. Nico Hulkenberg squeezed into 14th place. -- Mickey

Perez has gone quicker. Let's see louder.

are using the softer tyre at this point. A bit of peace and quiet.

Kimi Raikkonen has just got out of the pit lane, the only car on track.

Now is the time to ramp up the focus and concentration. Nico Rosberg, a

10th slower than his team-mate. Doesn't need to take risks, get into

the top ten. Raikkonen has got to do something, 1.5 seconds of the

fastest pace, how far off Alonso? Six tenths, quite a big margin

around here. Looking as if he's a bit more together. But in a good

performance at Belgium. He has been a

your thoughts with what is going on at Ferrari? They have played a bit

with different downforce setups. They have, but they have both opted

more subservient to the obstructions with Ferrari, they don't even bother

trying to negotiate with Kimi. We are riding on board, let's see how

this goes, the first point is to get breaking right. To 20 mph, it looks

like traffic ahead, never a good thing. -- 220 mph. Gets a way with

it. A bit of a lock-up which will not affect the tyre. Sometimes over

speeding the entry like that gains you a bit of lap time. Interesting

to see what this first sector is. As he comes down under the breaking

into the second chicane. Not bad. Four tenths away, 3.5 tenths away

from the fastest. A bit too wide on the exit of the second chicane. He

has backed out. Interesting. He must have felt lost a huge amount but he

did not look that way. Once he was over the back of the curve on the

exit of the second chicane, even if you're keeping your foot in, you are

losing as the car bounces up and down. He got the apex to the first

part and solidifying. Understeer wide. As he got the timestamp on,

you have got the feedback on the lap delta. You have experience and

feel. Dipping into the gravel. You know there is a 10th gone. A short

run until the first Curva di Lesmo. Evil be in a crucial position.

the tyres are holding up but he can't afford another mistake. At Spa

he made another mistake at qualifying which dropped him but he

recovered to finish fourth he needs a decent qualifying run. Coming out

of Parabolica to start another lap. Magnussen ahead of him and McLaren

to give him the slipstream. We are seeing fast times. Rosberg setting

the pace in the first set. We are waiting for Hamilton. Behind Rosberg

Ontrack. Hamilton has been slower in the first section and Rosberg, let's

not be very concerned if it is not managed to go purple Parabolica --

not manage Parabolica one tenth down. Contrasting driving styles and

setup of the car -- not manage. He will use his advantage in the middle

and last sector. It is interesting, Rosberg not

having a great middle sector, Sebastian Vettel has gone seven,

chequered flag is that an Valtteri Bottas is that, who is in the drop

zone? Kevin Magnussen, Daniil Kvyat, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Hulkenberg

and Gutierrez. Adrian Sutil is out. Nico Rosberg gets within 0.04

seconds of Lewis Hamilton but the real battle is to come. Nico

Hulkenberg is out the rest of qualifying, crossing in 14th

position but Sergio Perez is through. A great lap earlier from

parents. He did not improve on the second run but enough to get his

Force India through. Jean-Eric Vergne improves but not enough

because he is 12. As Kevin Magnussen got enough to improve? He would

knock out Kimi Raikkonen who is on a lap as well. He knocks out Kimi

Raikkonen for the moment and Raikkonen has not done enough, or

has he? No, Daniil Kvyat moves up and Raikkonen is definitely out,

squeezed out by not as Kevin Magnussen but by Daniil Kvyat as

well. And Raikkonen, only 12, when Alonso was fifth fastest.

Disappointment. Meanwhile, Hamilton managed to almost matches earlier

time, crucially, psychologically, still marginally faster on the last

time that than what Rosberg achieved. The battle is on, there,

as the disappointment in the Ferrari side of the garage shows. Was there

another mistake? This is at the second chicane again, where he had

the issue, oversteer on entry, corrects, gets away with it but does

he go wide again? Not as bad on the exit but he loses time on the entry

phase. Esteban Gutierrez was very wide out of Ascarate. Looked like he

was aiming to Mexico, the line he was taking. Adrian Sutil again a

fraction faster but I think Hulkenberg will be disappointed to

be done in 14th when Peretz has gone through and Daniil Kvyat again was

fast. RADIO: It is 14th position, I'm afraid. It has not come together

for Nico Hulkenberg today. But Hamilton has just maintained an edge

over Nico Rosberg. Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa showing Williams

are forced be reckoned with but probably not quite enough to

challenge for pole position. Then it looks as though it is a close

between Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull and it could go anyway. But I

think that was a good lap by Kevin Magnussen at the end and both

rookies delivering a solid performance in that session,

although Daniil Kvyat did not get into the top ten, he was still a

fraction faster than his team-mate and I don't think Toro Rosso could

have asked for more. On any given day, that is what they are looking

for, a belief the driver has got everything out of the machinery.

Disappointment that he will drop down to 21 on the grid. But he has

done the best he could today. Those cars that have gone out our Daniil

Kvyat, Kimi Raikkonen, the big news, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Hulkenberg,

Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez. Interesting session. With a lap time

of 1:20 4.6, Nico Rosberg wanted to do another lap and that shows the

level of competition because he was easily through the cut-off point. He

was and as a team, he should not have gone out and must not have.

That was clear because he needs to make sure he keeps his tyres, not

just for the next session but also the race. This is going to be very

hot and you never know what will happen. I can see that he is going

to bring the fight to Lewis, who has to have pole position, I believe, to

keep any real sign of the championship alive. It is as

difficult as that. A couple of disappointed team-mates, Nico

Hulkenberg and Kimi Raikkonen, was that a surprise? He looked as though

he was sailing through and he had a couple of moments. His car does not

seem balanced, and he still seems nervous. He has not got the best out

of it in spite of a very good race in Spa, which is his pet track.

Nonetheless, he has come here and does not make the final qualifying,

big disappointment for Ferrari with Luca di Montezemolo here, but a big

disappointment for him as well. Let's have a quick word with

Christian Horner on the pit wall. How is your session going so far? We

are extracting every ounce of performance we can, Bunning as low

downforce as we can but to be honest, if

downforce as we can but to be pretty well. It is extremely tight

downforce as we can but to be Incredibly. You can see the first

four cars are ballistic liquid, the Incredibly. You can see the first

Williams and Mercedes on the straight. Rosberg has done 353

kilometres per hour on the straight and we are doing 345 at best. We are

giving away a lot in a straight line. Hopefully we will be able to

get closer to Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso. Is this a track

where you are trying to maximise the points you can get, put it aside and

look at the rest of the season? All of those circuits seem to be

favourable to read book, if you like. That must be your damage

limitation scenario. -- to Red Bull. It is right, damage limitation is

limitation scenario. -- to Red Bull. right. We know we have better tracks

coming up so if we can sneak a car on the third row, that would be very

strong. We know we have better race pace but the problem is, it is

likely to be a 1-stop race. It is going to be interesting. With the

fact it will be a 1-stop race, do you think that tactics played into

Daniel's cans? Perhaps that will not happen tomorrow for you, that

perfect plan. It will be fascinating, we will see what they

doing this qualifying, get stuck into the race, survived the first

exciting times, as you said, it was very tight in the midfield but the

Williams boys are really coming used to great word, ballistic. They seem

They have got the qualifying pace and the race pace but it looks like

Mercedes will be the front row still. It is a fight for pole

position between the Mercedes drivers but I think the second rope

could be the property of Williams. We have said that earlier today.

They look so strong, confident. This is a really cracking little car.

What Pat Symonds has done has revitalised it, along with the other

people. Williams is absolutely a team to be reckoned with. It

certainly is. This is going to be very exciting top ten shoot out. Q3

coming up right now. COMMENTATOR: Fernando Alonso four

for Rory. So much hope and expectation always on Ferrari

drivers, here. He is the only one in the top ten now because we have lost

Kimi Raikkonen. Sergio Perez is the only Force India but where are they

going to place on the final grid going to place on the final grid

behind them but we also have to allow for penalties to be applied.

We know Daniil Kvyat, who qualified 11th, has a ten place penalty which

will move Kimi Raikkonen up into 11th place,

types of pressure, the intra- team battle between the team-mates but

they cannot afford to make any errors. Valtteri Bottas was only two

tenths of Rosberg in Q2. It all to play for, inside the team and

Williams are sitting pretty. Yes, they will put the pressure on and

they managed to do it in Austria when it went wrong, Lewis Hamilton

exceeded track boundaries and then spun in qualifying. Rosberg just did

not quite get a lap together and Felipe Massa was very impressive,

and so was out to rebut us, in Austria. It does not look as though

they have quite got the edge, yet, but let's wait and see. We will find

out in the next ten minutes. Sergio Perez, then, having had a problem in

practice this morning, has put it behind him and is solidly in the top

ten. But whereabouts in the top ten is he going to end up? That is what

we will find out soon. Jenson Button, we thought he was going to

be the only McLaren in the top ten for a while but his team-mates just

snuck in there in the dying moments so he will have to do it all again.

-- team-mate. There is one of the two we think will end up on pole

position and Nico Rosberg has an amazing sequence of pole positions

going at the moment, seven times he has out-qualified Lewis Hamilton

recently. RADIO: Degradation is low on this compound. I would not be

surprised if you better York YouTube -- York YouTube time considerably.

-- your Q2 time. That is Sergio Perez's engineer, who will switch to

Sebastian Vettel next year. Nico Rosberg has had four consecutive

pole positions in these last few races, seven in all, and in

qualifying, as I say, he has done better than Lewis Hamilton. Let's

see what happens as Perez goes into the first chicane, speed trap

figures, not quite up there with the best, 353 kilometres per hour was

the best we have seen for Nico Rosberg but a pretty clean entry and

exit. The first lap, you expect him to wind up to improving in the first

sector. It is so difficult to spot the braking when you are opening a

lap with different tyres. You start to build a picture of how the car is

performing as you get through the second chicane. Keeping out of the

way of the traffic, Rosberg, allowing parents to go through the

first Lesmo. Only two corners on this track that resemble anything of

any other circuit you may be on. Every other corner, like the Ascari

chicane coming up is truly unique. And that is where he is coming, out

of the trees, before the left- right- left Flash, trying to get on

the power as early as possible. Another key straight and he heads

down towards the final turn, Another key straight and he heads

Parabolica. Again, the car is picking up an immense amount of

speed and then just judging the braking correctly, as Perez turns

in. How wide does he run on the exit? We lost sight of him a bit but

he was just on to the white line, perhaps a touch over. Pretty clean

and it is 1:20 6.2, four Sergio Perez. He did a 1:20 5.8 earlier. He

has got a used set of tyres, so that would have allowed for a bit of the

time. There is the boss, watching just one car in this session for

Force India. Nico Rosberg, onto a lap. I think he's on a new set of

tyres. We might see a pretty dramatic fast lap from Nico

Rosberg, but Valtteri Bottas is also one and Lewis Hamilton a bit further

back, with the advantage to be running behind although it was not

in Monaco this year. Rosberg will potentially get the benefit of

Peretz's slipstream and Hamilton coming up against Alonzo, in

parabolic, completing his first lap, has a completely clear track of

everything -- ahead of him so he will not get a distant slipstream

advantage. Rosberg is picking up a bit of a slipstream, as will be

Valtteri Bottas in the Williams. Peretz has got out of the way,

releasing Rosberg into Ascari. Valtteri Bottas will catch him on

the exit the corner so it should not make much difference. Rosberg going

off a bit but nothing overly dramatic. We know

off a bit but nothing overly great pace. They don't need to throw

everything into the first attempt but it has worked in the past. It

worked well for Rosberg. He just runs it out over the white line,

pretty neat. Let's see what his lap time is like. He will go quickest

but will it be enough. 1.24.5. That matches what Hamilton did. Valtteri

Bottas go second. 1.24.6. Can Felipe Massa find a bit more speed from the

Williams costume and how about Hamilton? He has just gone fastest

that any -- faster than anybody buy to dent in the mid-sector and that

will give him a chance to go fastest. Felipe Massa will be the

first of the better cross the line, 1:20 4.8. He's a bit slower than bow

to rebut us. -- 1:24 .8. He is a bit slower than Valtteri Bottas. This

could be enough for Hamilton to take top spot away from Nico Rosberg and

it is exclusion not 1:24 .1. Four tenths faster than Nico Rosberg and

Alonzo goes fifth fastest for the moment, tucked in behind Williams.

That is a mighty lap, the second and third sector, Hamilton has stamped

his name all over it every time he's been on track. The only area he can

improve his in the first sector, looking at the session so far.

Sebastian Vettel comes across the line to go fifth, ahead of the

Ferrari but Jenson Button has gone faster than both

Ferrari but Jenson Button has gone Outstanding! Much better than we

have seen from McLaren recently. Daniel Ricciardo only ninth in his

first run and we are still waiting to see, no, Kevin Magnussen is
