Championships. His Portugal side were held by Iceland in their group

opener but they are one of the most consistent performers in this

competition. They have reach the quarterfinals at the last five

tournaments. It is quite the opposite for Austria. This is the

first time the country have ever qualified for the finals. They had

nine straight wins but were gobbled up by Hungary in their opening game.

David Alaba was there shining light last Tuesday. Good evening and

welcome back to Paris. We have all bases covered in the studio tonight

from centre-back, midfield and upfront. Rio Ferdinand, Jermaine

Jenas and Alan Shearer are here this evening. Both of these sides

flattered a little bit to deceive in their first game? I was very

disappointed, particularly import your goal. They didn't play very

well at all. But it is more likely if Ronaldo plays well Portugal will

win the game. He fluffed one or two chances. I thought he was trying too

hard to impress. He did not look his normal self. Austria, I sort of

looked at and I was struggling to see were all the hype, or a lot of

the people were saying Austria were going to do well, having watched

Sweden and Russia who were in their group in the qualifying campaign.

They have not performed well those two. I don't know where the hype

came from with Austria. I think the big thing was Ronaldo's comments. On

top of that is the embarrassment. Obviously, the emotion, you get

caught up in the motion but I think the embarrassing at would have hurt

more than anything. We have all been there in our time. I remember seeing

Liverpool celebrated at times or Arsenal. It would really antagonise

you. I think it is the embarrassment. Just in case you

missed it, he said something along the lines, Iceland are small to

mentality. They will not go and win the tournament playing that way.

Defend, defend, defend etc. Considering Iceland, there are more

volcanoes than people. It is obviously frustrating. It is

frustrating but he was given a platform to put all that to bed. If

he believes that team are beneath him or don't deserve to be on the

pitch with him, there is the platform to go and destroy them with

goals. There is no law saying you have to help the opposition win the

game. Iceland were brilliant. They deserved what they got, I have had a

bad game but I will be there for the next one. You cannot blame someone

for showing emotion sometimes. We all have emotions. We do. The two

other teams in Group F met earlier. A Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty gave

Iceland the lead against Hungary who came back in yet another late goal,

in the 87th minute. An unfortunate own goal meant the points were

shared. That gives hungry four points which does not guarantee they

are going through but they are pretty close. Iceland in second

place. It is all to play for in this second group. Meanwhile, in Group E,

Belgium enjoyed a comfortable victory over the Republic of

Ireland. Lukaku scored twice. We will have highlights at half-time.

That win moves Belgium up to second place. They will have to beat Italy

to stand any chance of progressing. It is looking very difficult for the

Republic of Ireland now? First and foremost, it is a group. Today, I

did not really give them a chance. I think the changes made to the squad

were positive changes. The Ireland team could not handle Belgium in

that second half. There was some class from start to finish. When

they conceded the first goal, it was downhill from then onwards. Belgium

had to come out and put in a performance and they did that. I

suppose it does not necessarily affect what happens in tonight's

game, the Iceland results? I think Portugal have to come out and win

this game. The performance was not at a level we expected and they have

players who want to perform on this stage and they have got to go and

produce it today. It is a big game, a big ask. All right, back to

tonight's match and here are the starting line-ups. The Portuguese

have decided against resting the 38-year-old Ricardo Carvalho.

24-year-old William Carvalho starts as Portugal's holding midfielder,

coming in for the injured Danilo. It is a 4-3-3 formation. Mario Draghi

player to miss out. There are three changes to the Austrian team but not

in goal, where Almer will hope to end his 34 year wait for a win.

Another change sees Stefan Ilsanker start as a defensive midfielder.

Bayern Munich star Alaba can play a more attacking role. Austria have

dropped young code there -- Janko. This match is taking place just down

the road in the park Des Princes, the home of Paris Saint-Germain. It

has hosted six European Cup finals and has a capacity of 40 5000.

tactics from Portugal and they will switch to more beg for 33 tonight,

do not normally see him miss. I don't how they will react to that.

The other day we saw them struggling a lot against a direct type of game.

First and foremost they have to try and find the main man and they did

not do that in the first game very much. Both Portugal and Austria

finished well below in their qualification group. These two are

chasing Hungary who have four points in the group. Nothing is easy in

Europe or in the world. One thing you notice is a lot of goals scored

at the end of the game. Why is that? You saw it again today with Iceland.

Teams defend, defend well, but sometimes, you cannot just stay

there and defend, you have to be able to counter and hurt also and

make sure they do 60 yards back. At the moment, a lot of teams defend

too deep. That allows a lot of goals. Going back to what you were

saying, it is not an easy tournament. We were thinking, there

will be a lot of small teams, will be quality be the same? The way the

teams are playing is maybe not the best but tactically, you see some

great stuff. Sometimes you see them defend too much and it allows

pressure and maybe to score a goal that the end. England may be here if

they win their group. He will be back in a couple of minutes time.

Gas, he will be back shortly. Everyone loves a rogue, don't be?

Step forward, Pepe. The case for the defence. Here's a nice guy. Nice and

polite but he cannot take defeat. In football's pantomime, the cast of

villains is a long one. Top of the list is the bed. I have played

against him many times and I have never had a problem with him. I

guess I was lucky. He was named after two scientists in the hope he

might become one. To be fair, he had a go. Halfway to becoming a

qualified physiotherapist, Pepe wants to open a clinic when he

retires. Perhaps he is simply drumming up business. Away from the

pantomime, there is another picture of Pepe. He has helped me settle in

Real Madrid. An amazing man first and foremost. He is a very good

person. He takes care of the people who surround him. He is better than

people know. He donated ten tonnes of food to the poorest families in

his Madrid neighbourhood to see them through Christmas. Martin Keown was

very different than he was in the field. Sometimes Martin was not

doing what he should be doing to stop a player but Martin was a funny

guy, nice. You should not judge the man as the player. As a child in

Brazil, he looked after fish which he sold to help his family eat. Once

he traded them for a Real Madrid shirt with the name McManaman on the

back. Those shirts are highly thought of and hard to come by! He

never made it as a school full forward, but as a defender, he

flourished, and followed his hero. They have won the Champions League

twice, he has been an integral part of it. The guy is a very good

defender, holding his position, winning what he did win, you have to

give the guy his respect. He has come far, the boy who defied his

parents to play with children ten years his senior. He once gave up

the game and had to be persuaded to come back. The reason? He did not

like some of the behaviour on the pitch. I know from reading the

Spanish press, I think depending on where you are born and how you play

the game, we will all have contrasting views to be very honest

about it. Perhaps, like the pantomime, it is just a British

thing? Whatever is said about Pepe, I take

it all back, he is clearly a lovely guy! That is off the pitch, but he

can be an irritant on it and does things we don't necessarily approve

of. He is a person who divides opinion. I do not question his

ability. If you are one of those players who are really important in

your squad, and as good as everyone says he is, he should not be doing

things like that. I would be interested to hear what you think,

Rio. As a player, it is undoubted in terms of his abilities, the trophies

he has won. There are chinks in his game and I think someone of his

calibre can exploit that, but I think physically, pace, aggression,

he has got that. Sometimes he does get caught up in the emotions of the

game and the occasion and his reputation is justified. He makes it

hard to like him. Pretending he is injured? It is the stuff you

associate with number nine is! I would really have enjoyed to play

against him. I think he would be easy to wind up. I think there is a

mistake in him quite often. He is one of those guys were I would go

and stand on him, I would tug his shirt, perhaps stand on his toes and

whispered things in his ear, knowing all of these things would wind him

up, he would do something stupid and I would expect him to make a

mistake. I think there is a mistake on him in the 90 minutes. They have

made one or two changes, Portugal. William Carvalho coming in. He is a

top player. Some clubs in the Premier League are interested. He

was playing the tournament last year and he is a very commanding figure,

a great presence, in front of the back four, really patrolled the area

very well, has a good understanding of the game. A good player, strong.

They do rely massively on Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a superstar. His

first game was not up to his normal standards?

He wasn't. Portugal's hopes lie with him. These are - that chance there,

we - because of his high standards - we would expect him to put that

away. It was a frustrating night for him. I do... The story about Ronaldo

- in his head, in Portugal's team, it is about him. He has to score

that one. A good ball in. It was a frustrating night for him. He's got

to perform if Portugal are going to progress. I didn't like what he said

after the game. He should have been bigger and better than that. I would

not be surprised if he was to join the party tonight and get on the

score sheet. He rarely has one bad game let alone two on the bounce?

Yes, there will be no-one more desperate to rectify the result, the

performance of the last game. The difference in the Portugal team

compared to when you see him for his club, he plays as a focal point up

front. When he gets off the sides, he is able to free himself up and

face the defenders straightaway. If you are Ronaldo, it is a different

dynamic that you have to adjust to. Didn't he say to you he felt this

Portugal team was the best he has played in? He said this is the most

solid team, we will be very hard to beat. It is about scoring the goals.

They had chances the last game. If they can score them, they will be a

force. Ronaldo is one of a few individual superstars yet to catch

fire at this tournament. Maybe Thierry has a theory, he is with

Dan. Let's put the question to the man

himself. Muller, Ibrahimovic, Hazard, why aren't they taking this

tournament by storm? Those guys - you mentioned the names - I

mentioned the teams - Real Madrid, Paris St German, Bayern Munich, they

are not altogether playing with each other with quality players from the

best of the best, if I can say so. That is why I think they are not

performing as well as they do in their own club. I still back Ronaldo

to score some goals tonight. We all know what he can do. All you need is

to feed him. He missed a goal the other day, but I still back him.

They are not playing with the players that they usually play with.

We watched France against Romania, Payet stepped forward and grabbed

that opportunity, and that responsibility? Yes, you cannot

achieve anything alone. Payet wanted that game. Like he wanted it the

other day, although he scored the second one. I'm sure we will see

that with Ronaldo. We all know what he can do. It won't be easy against

Austria. Will they have the same tactic as Iceland? Or will they go

through with Alaba? We shall see. I'm sure Ronaldo will do something

About time we had some sunshine! Austria's main man is David Alaba,

the Bayern Munich player, he is set to become a real superstar.

At 23, David Alaba already appears to have it all - a Champions League

medal, five Bundesliga titles and Austrian Player of the Year on five

occasions! Now he carries the hopes of his homeland, hungry for success.

Born in Vienna, his footballing education began in the suburbs.

After a year at his local club, Alaba was picked up by Austria

Vienna. The limelight shines brightly in

family Alaba. Father George is a rapper and DJ. His sister is a

singer. But David strikes a different note. In 2008, Bayern

Munich came calling and ever since, he has been perfectly in tune to

Pep. Reliable, versatile, his manager describes him as Bayern

Munich's God, a man who can play in all ten positions. And other talents

have also been honed. Saturday night and Austria expects.

Can their superstar shine and help thwart another man who knows a thing

or two about grabbing the limelight? David Alaba. His dad is rapper -

that rhymes! I think this young player is something very special. He

can play anywhere. He is 23. You feel like he's been around forever.

Pep Guardiola is quoted as saying he's played in all ten positions on

the pitch this year. That tells you everything you need to know about

him as a player. To do that, it tells you of the level of

intelligence he has. He's the star of this team. He's got four goals in

qualifying. He gets into some good attacking positions. He can go by

players, he can see a pass, but he is so important. You love him, Rio.

He is a dream player to have in your squad. He is an integral part of

this team, the best player in this team, no doubt. Any team on the

planet, a manager would take this player because he offers so much.

There aren't many superstars that are brilliant in five or six

positions. This guy could be one. He's that good. You can look at it

both ways. You can say, you need to find a position, or it would be

another Philip Lahm situation. He can play anywhere. In terms of the

other players, one we know very well from the Premier League at Stoke, is

Arnautovic. He had a very good season for Stoke. Their Player of

the Year. Like Alaba, if Austria are going to progress, he has to

perform. He has got the ability. I know it is a problem when you turn

round and say about somebody, if he performs on the night, and if he

fancies it - this is the case with Arnautovic. We do see flashes of

brilliance and he can do past people. He can score spectacular

goals. But he will have to do that tonight. Clever, cute, Rio? His

biggest problem has been in his head leading up to this point. This

season, Mark Hughes has done a great job in terms of getting him to work

hard and become part of a team. He's been a bit of a maverick. He can

float around. When he does get chances to put the ball into

dangerous areas, he has that ability. Portugal or Austria?

the man whose record Cristiano Ronaldo is taking tonight, Luis Figo

is in the house. Let's take a look at the teams, with

two changes to Portugal's line-up. William Carvalho in for Danilo. The

inclusion of Ricardo Quaresma has had the Portuguese press purring.

The referee has had a week's break and now he gets his second run-out

of the tournament, the man who took the final at the World Cup two years

ago, had a very good game in Marseille for England against Russia

last Saturday. Two of Austria's three changes are

enforced - Sebastian Prodl is in and David Alaba is playing in a more

forward role. The There is one stand-out star in each

line-up. You will see that the Austria line-up is depleted by two.

Nobody on a booking in the Austrian line-up. Portugal haven't had a

player booked at all yet. Well, off we go. Cheers from the

Austrian end as Portugal or in possession. Martin Keown is

alongside me for this one. There was a wry smile in the build-up when we

had Thierry Henry comparing YouTube Pepe. -- comparing you to Pepe. Pepe

sometimes takes a dive here or there but he's still an outstanding

player. There is the first corner of the

match by Florian Klein. Ronaldo has almost got a permanent grin on his

face tonight. It will be up to Prodl and code to try and wipe that. That

nearly caught Austria out. Ronaldo close. The keeper taking no chances

there. We have seen a few dodgy attempts from keepers to come and

take balls. A nice one early on for him to deal with. This one will come

from the other side. Ricardo Quaresma, once the referee has had a

word with one or two on the edge of the box, will deliver. William

Carvalho is a big presence in there. It is hooked way over by Ricardo

Carvalho is still going strong at the age of 38. At the age of 61 is

Fernando Santos. At the last European Championship, he was the

man who led Greece into the quarterfinals.

Ronaldo was trying to find Na Mi, was cleared by Prodl of Vicarage

Road. Pepe was hopping around a little concerned and he got his

keeper into trouble that. As experienced as he is, that was a

schoolboy backpass. Harnik was closest to it.

Here is Klein. Klein being forced back by Raphael Guerreiro. Harnik

could not hang in the air quite long enough. You talk about defending,

look at Pepe here. He has no idea where his man is. He cannot direct

it into the back of the net. A let off for Portugal. It will be a throw

for Portugal now. They need to steady themselves down. Harnik

playing as the main front man it seems, with Alaba close in support.

Alaba has played everywhere this season, quite a utility player,

quite the nominal really. It would not surprise me if he ends up

scoring here tonight. Ronaldo. Austria are happy to see Ronaldo in

that deep lying position. Nani is playing as a centre forward.

Ricardo Quaresma fancied a touch there. There might be the chance to

catch Robert Almer. He will not score from there, that is ashore. --

for sure. The man who had a brief spell with Chelsea.

Marcel Koller, the first Swiss to take charge of the neighbours from

over the hills. He played for Switzerland at Euro 96.

Alaba could not take it under control. Andre Gomes will find

Raphael Guerreiro. Ronaldo quickly met. Now Ricardo Quaresma. Christian

Fuchs to try to stop him. He could not. Ricardo Quaresma looks full of

beans. We have had a headed chance peace now. The ball coming in on the

wing hooks him back in. You can't get enough on it, direction. Not

really sure he is a centre forward with that instinct to score goals,

Nani. Almost a dozen in his first season in Turkish football, the

season just passed. Ricardo Carvalho netted bump away

from him. There was a thought he could get a breather tonight with

Jose Fonte of Southampton getting a game, but he will have to wait his

chance. A renaissance for Carvalho. He retired for three years.

Joao Moutinho. He likes to pull the strings in there. That is a straight

path from him, and usual. Christian Fuchs with the throw. The Leicester

title winner. The free kick this time goes to

Austria. It looks like Nicola Rizzoli is in stern mood this

evening. He will take a firm grip of this. Carve a was not quick enough

to get to that one. -- Carvalho. Christian Fuchs delivers. Knocked

Switch in towards Nani. Good work from the retreating Florian Klein,

the Austrian right back. Harnik takes the first blow from

Pepe tonight. Harnik is already doing well. We have seen him play as

a winner, seeing him play centrally tonight. What is your verdict on

Pepe, love him, hate him or both? Everyone wants to say nice things

about him but he lets defenders go in the box, makes rash decisions. In

terms of communication as well, watching those two trying to work

out who is the leader, and at the moment it is hard to work out.

Most of the singing around the ground at the moment is coming from

Austrian supporters. They are pretty happy with the way their team have

started. The coach Marcel Koller's assessment of their defeat to

Hungary was they were too nervous in the first half. No sign of nerves in

this. Not at all, there are no signs of nerves. They are settling well in

this match. That was disrupted by the award of another free kick.

Correctly though. He caught Ricardo Carvalho. Maybe it is catching from

Pepe. I think he nicked him but I think he already knew he was coming.

Pepe, a little unsure. Ricardo Quaresma managed to get away from

Julian Baumgartlinger. He gave it away there. He allowed Joao Moutinho

into the tackle. A quick recovery. The Wolfsburg writeback was

criticised by a few. Southampton's Cedric Soares is waiting in the

wings. Portugal's best spell of possession in the match so far. , He

likes that, out to the side to Ricardo Quaresma.

Stefan Ilsanker is on it. He took it really nicely. He did not get past

Carvalho defined Harnik. Harnik liked the idea. Harnik made an

exceptional run. Too quick for Prodl. Nani in. It was

saved. Joao Moutinho has gone on to it. And Vieirinha tries and forces

the save from Almer. A really good effort from the full-back. Good

effort from Vieirinha there. A good save from the keeper. Not too far

away from that one. It looks as if it might be going wide. A big

deflection as well. Well worth striking.

Almer have to make another save. That one a little more routine. The

Austrian hearts will be beaten back there right now. -- beating.

The first Portugal press of the night.

Arnautovic, really nicely won. Got up strongly. Arnautovic with a good

ball in for Harnik. Tried to find Alaba. Good play there from Austria.

Harnik is making a really good target man. Alaba was making that

run, playing in a new position again. It is pretty much a four for

two that Austria are playing. When they are out of possession, they are

tacking back in again. I wonder if Arnautovic will want to get back. He

did really well to take it away from Nani. Alaba, not so well. Andre

Gomes to Raphael Guerreiro. Gomes has Baumgartlinger all over him.

Very quickly in came Stefan Ilsanker. Harnik. No danger for Rui

Patricio. There is a big bonus for Alaba to get up and support the

front man. At the moment it is for - 4-2. Alaba has got to get back into

help that midfield. That wasn't the best clearance from

the keeper. The flag is up. He's caught offside there, Ronaldo. He is

slow to come out. Look at him walking. Offside.

He will get another Portugal record tonight... Still got a smile on his

face. Maybe he knows something we don't. I'm sure there will be a

moment of brilliance at some point. He's scored six goal as -- six goals

at the European Championship. Ricardo Carvalho still has the

alertness and the instinct. He needed to there. Arnautovic is

playing left-wing. A nudge from Arnautovic. That is an

easy one to spot and a bit of a flare up with Nani. The referee

watched it all develop and will now just issue a lecture to both. Nani

got the brunt of the words. There was nothing in it. Good play down

this left-hand side by Austria. Fuchs is such a wonderful player, he

is like a server of the ball. He didn't get enough credit last season

at Leicester for me, the way that he played. Austria can channel the

Leicester spirit today, to get a result in this one.

Baumgartlinger can't get there before Ronaldo. Ronaldo only had one

option there. He was caught late by Ilsanker but still got it out. That

was better. The first clearance was not so good.

He blasted it straight back against his own man. Sloppy play, inviting

pressure on. Here it comes with a Ricardo

Quaresma corner. It was Carvalho, Ricardo Carvalho, who got above

Ronaldo, who didn't appreciate it. It is a great leap, isn't it? Just

off target with his header. Lost none of his spring at 38. It was his

to head? Yes. There doesn't look to be great

communication between the goalkeeper and his central defenders. The

goalkeeper looks frightened to death. He's the only home-based

player, the only man from the Austrian Bundesliga in the squad,

plays with Austrian Vienna, re-joined them last summer after

four years away, mostly in the Second Division in Germany.

Ronaldo is coming quite deep to get it. Guerreiro's cross was blocked by

Klein. Portugal look the more menacing.

Pepe is down after a brush with Harnik after the ball had gone.

It's a well-worn phrase now - Pepe down. Pepe now copping it!

Nani, Guerreiro, Ronaldo! He misses the target. It was a wonderful

Portuguese move. Their best player was on the end of it. Guerreiro, a

one-two there, Ronaldo, the pain on his face, he knows he should be

hitting the back of the net there. No excuses.

It is coming though, isn't it? It is coming. Looking at his finish there,

maybe he should have gone with a flick with the outside of his right

foot. He's scored enough goals - 51 this season? It was ten down on the

year before so he's had a bad season(!)

I'm sure he will get it right in the end.

Alaba off balance and he hit the deck. That is a problem for Austria

if that's a genuine problem, a genuine concern rather. He is OK. He

is up on his feet. I didn't like the look on his face

at first. Sabitzer found the ball wouldn't stick. Very scrappy from an

Austrian point of view. They seem quite happy to sit in, Portugal are

dominating position. We saw Sebastian Prodl, who was given his

chance today with Dragovic suspended. You were surprised Kevin

Wimmer didn't get a chance? He's filled in nicely for Spurs this

season. I can't believe he's not in this team. He's gone with the

experience of Prodl, 58th cap tonight. Wimmer has only made three

appearances in friendlies so far. One for the future for the Austrian

national side. He is a left-footed centre-back and Hinteregger has had

to come over to that side. You don't often see two left-footed central

defenders in fairness. If you want to get experience, there is nothing

like playing in the games. Harnik did well. Carvalho was watching and

waiting, though. Ricardo Carvalho finds Quaresma, who keeps it in.

They are smothering them now, Austria.

Martin Harnik has that extra energy and mobility that you would expect

from a wide player, but he is surviving on scraps at the moment.

He nearly didn't make it to the tournament, he had left his passport

at home! Nodded behind. Safety first from Klein. Portugal corner. That

all came from Klein giving the ball away some time ago. It feels like a

matter of time before Portugal are going to score. This is their fifth

corner. It's poor, isn't it? The quality has

to be better. In that final third especially.

The teams practice this, leading up to the Championship, in training,

set-pieces, so it is unforgivable, really, that type of cross. Once

again, Robert Almer looks most uncomfortable with the ball at his

feet. William Carvalho looks very

impressive, sitting in front of that defence. It's a popular role now for

most teams. It was a collision with William

Carvalho and the referee couldn't have been better placed to see that.

Ronaldo was waiting for it. No foul there either. Now it comes Ronaldo's

way. No foul there either. Oh there is! There is! Listen, Austria will

feel very hard done by there. Two fouls against them. The players have

every right to be arguing with the ref there.

It's directed towards Sebastian Prodl. Florian Klein was the player

who left Ronaldo on the floor. That was definitely a foul. But there

were two fouls before that on Austrian players.

We talked about quality in the final third. Against Iceland in the 1-1

draw on Tuesday, Portugal had 26 shots and only found the net once.

We talked about it with the England team. You have to get your scoring

boots on. Top players, when they are in front of goal, they are icy cool,

they have that extra quality. Arnautovic gets a free kick for the

Austrians. Austria have never won a game at the European Championship.

This is only their second tournament, which comes as a

surprise. The only previous one was when they were co-hosts eight years

ago. Ronaldo finds Andre Gomes, who had

the power and pace. It goes behind for a corner.

Quaresma left that time, Ronaldo went right, Nani through the middle.

They are chopping and changing, they are weaving like the Red Arrows.

Quaresma elected to come back inside. Nani! Hits the post. That

one is over from Joao Moutinho. They are coming to get you! Great ball in

there. Nani really should be scoring there. Good follow-up shot as well

from Moutinho. Gets off the ground brilliantly. Can't steer it into the

back of the net. Nobody near him. The Austrian goal is leading a

charmed life. Too much on that. Marcel Koller has some sorting out

to do here. He looks calm enough. I feel when your goalkeeper, he has no

real confidence, it spreads throughout the team. They are just

happy to let Portugal have it, to mount attacks from where they

please. Quaresma makes himself available

with some strong running. Prodl is there to see him. The referee's

whistle went before it could develop between them. Quaresma has a yellow

card. Look at him here. Some strikers see this as a free go. He

wants to argue with the referee. OK, if you want to argue with me, I will

book you, thank you very much. The shirt was being held by Prodl. Just

to point that out. Here is William Carr Valley. Ronaldo. A superblock

from Hinteregger. Austria have never kept a clean

sheet at the European Championship. It would be amazing if they could

keep one tonight with what we are seeing so far. They have so much

space. A good score, of course. Ricardo Carvalho has managed to get

that one back. Vieirinha gets up again. I thought he would get a free

kick. Carvalho was quick to react. Came

off a Portuguese player, inadvertently. Harnik was ready for

an own goal. No pressure being put on Robert

Almer. Now Joao Moutinho is interested. Look at the clearance.

Here is Ronaldo. Ricardo Quaresma. I can't help thinking, they put that

on to his right foot, the goalkeeper, he is left footed

clearly. Keeps going back to him, crazy.

Christian Fuchs got too close to Nani.

Cristiano Ronaldo is told to keep his distance. Yes, a definite foul.

Wrapped him on the ankle. Raphael Guerreiro to take the free

kick. This is a very high line from the Austrians.

He was not able to find Quaresma. It was not very well executed by

Portugal. That will run away from Stefan

Ilsanker. Ronaldo is on the left wing. Nani is arriving on the right.

Ronaldo offside all stock that was a good save from Almer. It would not

have counted anyway. They see renowned though. Textbook the way he

gets off. The referee, linesman, has got that wrong. He is telling the

linesman, sorry, you got that wrong. A little touch from Pepe I think

there. Vieirinha will have to tidy it up with the help of Rui Patricio.

Austria's throw in. It is a case of nearly, but not quite for Portugal.

At least he has got a sense of humour there. The Austrian fans are

laughing at him and making fun of him. He may well have the last

laugh. I think with his lifestyle, he is always going to.

He got there to win the corner. Six did well there. The Portuguese

players have been given so much time to pick up their passes.

Ronaldo, he could not catch it. He was onside that time. Just about

onside. This time, he comes up with the play. He is on it in a flash. He

can't get the power he needs. And Austria free kick. I thought

they were going to take their time with it bit Baumgartlinger was in a

hurry to find Leave. It was all too hurried actually.

Sabitzer did well there. Robin. -- probing.

Arnautovic did not enjoy that one, being outmuscled there.

That was a marvellous ball. Arnautovic is now caring into the

penalty area. Was it inside or outside? The assistant referee and

the additional assisted by the goal were there to give that one. It is

just on the margins. A free kick for Austria. A yellow card for Pepe. I

think he is realising he needed to get that challenging quickly, just

diving in. It was a cynical challenge. He almost stamped on the

player there. Desperate to get to Alaba before he gets to that box.

That was quite an animated meeting. I don't think Arnautovic is

impressed that Alaba has ushered him away from it. He is glowering, is

the state man. Alaba the blue-eyed boy. He gets to take it. -- the

Stoke man. Arnautovic goes round the back. Harnik is ready, Prodl is

ready. Alaba is ready to hit it. What a clearance from Vieirinha.

Now, there might be a Portuguese charge on.

A great ball in there from Alabama. That is why he was taking it. He has

got the quality to deliver that kind of ball. Arnautovic almost ran away.

A great ball in, fantastic defending. So much pace on it. Did

Robert give a -- did Rui Patricio give a little flick of the glove to

it as well? Incredibly, it is still 0-0 in the closing stages of the

first half. There is a clash of heads, Ricardo

Carvalho and David Alaba. They are sore.

Just that flick from Alaba. It is an honest challenge, of course.

Whenever you see an injury here, you have more reason than most to wince.

I almost lost my nose. Got it back again though. It is still there! I

was playing against Ronaldo and Romario that day, almost any excuse

to get off the pitch, they were that good. The other Ronaldo. Of course.

Often forgotten, but what a great player he was.

Prodl is quite happy to head the ball. That is his strength.

Portugal are prepared to keep peppering their defence with

crosses. I think really they would be better, there is too much on it

even for renowned though. The quality they have, they would be

better going that way, rather than trying to put balls into the box.

Florian Klein. There is an offside there. It was

Nani. Being sluggish hitting back. Not the first tonight. He doesn't

even know he is offside, that makes it worse. We are into the 45th

minute. I do think we are seeing the winners of Euro 2016 in this game.

It is not a bad 0-0, plenty happening. Plenty of opportunities.

You have got to be ruthless in front of goal, it is an essential part. It

has the smell of yet another game that will be decided later. Very

much the trend of this tournament. Ilsanker did a good job on Ronaldo

there. Sparing his team-mates' blushes.

That will do it for the first half at the Parc des Princes. Some

worrying moments at the back for Austria, they seemed all over the

place at times. It's the same story for Portugal as it was against

Iceland. Shot after shot, trying to create chance after chance, but

still they can't find a way through. Austria have had one or two moments

of their own. It is Portugal 0, Austria 0.

There is the Eiffel Tower. A spectacular sunset behind it this

evening. We have not seen too many goals with Portugal and Austria,

Portugal have failed to score with their last 31 shots since Nani's

goal against Iceland. Austria have been unsuccessful the last 29 shots.

There is one thing missing. Both teams have had chances. Portugal

dominated possession. They have created the better chances. Should

be winning the game. If you want chances to fall to one person, you

want them to fall to Ronaldo. He has had them, but he hasn't put them in.

They could be punished. I'm sure Austria can create one or two

chances more. There are mistakes in that back four of Portugal's. Having

said that, Portugal have been dominant? I think William Carvalho

has dominated the centre of that pitch, passing the ball forward when

he's had the chance. Nani and Ronaldo, the chances have fell to

them two guys and you would expect them to score two out of them four

chances. You have to put your chances away. There are chinks in

this Portuguese back four. There certainly are. Let's look at

Ronaldo. He scores a phenomenal amount of goals, but it's not

happened for him yet. Very frustrating half for him again.

Similar to the other night. Hasn't done a lot. That should be in the

back of the net. A guy of his standards... Great movement. Very

good movement. He's got to score. He looks eager and desperate to score.

That could be playing a part in why it hasn't gone in the back of the

net. He is getting in the positions. Just not getting his shots off like

he would normally. There is a volley coming up... Normally that would be

bursting the back of the net. Meat and drink to Ronaldo normally. It

shows he is human. I agree with Rio about him playing better from the

left-hand side. He is making good movements, but he has his back to

play a lot. Perhaps you would expect Nani to miss them more than Ronaldo

would. He's had his opportunities as well. When he gets in here, you

would back him. He has great feet. Great save as well. You have to pay

credit to the keeper. He came out, was big, he reacted very quickly

with his feet. Do you not think that's what's held him back? At

United he used to... In terms of natural ability, this kid has

everything. He is good in the air. His technique is brilliant. It is

the consistency... He is a one in four or five striker. Why is he like

that? What is missing? He is getting it altogether. He's... Is it mental

strength? Sometimes it is mental strength and being able to package

it altogether. It is making the decisions at the right time in the

final third. The best players make that decision. It is the hardest

thing to do, score goals! That is what you always say to us! We save

your bacon so often! Portugal, we have talked about their weaknesses,

in particular we feel from crosses? They have been week from crosses in

previous games. This was a reminder of - especially in the wider areas.

It is more the right-back not helping and covering. They should be

talking. There is no communication. There is a lack of communication.

This is what happened in their first game against Iceland. Almost an

identical position, from that right-hand side. Ball gets whipped

in, no communication between the two of them, no-one bossing it, no-one

prepared to organise. This time, they didn't get away with it and

also, from the left-hand side as well. Carvalho and Pepe. So that is

something I'm sure Austria will have discussed at half-time. Get the ball

in the box because if they do, that could happen. The difference in

modern football... This is a great header. This is what you are paid to

do. In today's football, it is about, are you good going forward?

Back in the day, it was, you defend first and then everything else is a

bonus. To find a blend you get in a world-class player nowadays. Is that

why there are better goalscoring ratios. In our day, one in two was

really good. Now the big stars score a goal a game. Full-backs don't stay

alongside their back four? I nougatry -- I knew Gary Neville and

Wes Brown were going to be there. When the ball is coming over, the

full-backs are thinking, when am I going to get it? That is a big

difference. Makes a better game to watch. You impressed with William

Carvalho? He is a giant of a man. He is huge. He is 6ft 2in, but what's

been most impressive is his feet, his calmness, he is assured on the

ball. He has been the springboard for the attacks here, getting the

ball, although he is in a lot of space. This one doesn't get there.

He has been doing this all game. What I like about him, he passes the

ball through the lines and runs. If Austria keep giving him the space,

as a midfielder it is a dream to play in that position. The strikers

don't want to press him. He can play beautiful one-twos like that. Even

though he holds within that position, he's got something about

him that wants to creep forward and create and there was a situation...

That is just so casual. He played a one around the corner to Ronaldo and

gets his shot off. So he has more than playing in that holding role. I

feel he could play and be destructive at the same time. If

nothing changes, he might do it at half-time, certainly within 10 or 15

minutes, it wouldn't surprise me if Sanches came on. The Republic of

Ireland took on Belgium. This is what happened with Simon Brotherton.

What a fantastic ball. A great chance for Hazard. First big chance

in the game. What a ball that is from Kevin De Bruyne. A lovely flick

from Hazard into De Bruyne, who shoots. Not enough pace to trouble

Darren Randolph. Belgium are threatening again. The ball in from

Hoolahan doesn't quite fall for Ward. Carrasco wants it, Lukaku gets

it. Could be a chance. It's a goal! Romelu Lukaku! Two minutes into the

second half. And the side ranked number two in the world have scored

their first goal in the tournament. It's come from the big number nine.

A brilliantly-worked goal by Belgium. Hazard, Carrasco on the far

side. Lukaku the only one inside the penalty area. 2-0! Nobody picks the

run. A free header. The keeper is unlucky. A poor goal for Ireland to

succeed. Belgium 2, Republic of Ireland 0, Axel Witsel is half an

hour to go. McClean up against Meunier.

Meunier gets the better of that duel. Into Hazard. Now, Belgium are

threatening a third goal. It must be three. It is. Lukaku's second of the

game. There won't be any coming back from this. Belgium 3, the Republic

of Ireland 0. Again, it is another poor Ireland goal to concede.

A bad day for the Republic. That win moves Belgium up to second place in

the group. A point against Sweden will see them qualify. The Republic

will have to beat Italy. England and Wales are 48 hours away from their

third and final group game with qualification for the last 16 still

in the hands of both teams. After Daniel Sturridge's winner for

England, both sides are approaching Monday in differing moods.

Three Lions, one Dragon. Sterling can't keep it down. I thought the

performance was very good. Kane goes for it. England are adamant it was

blocked by a hand. We got done with a sucker goal. Chest puffed out and

strike, and striked brilliantly. Gareth Bale with a moment of magic!

I don't think we played anywhere near to the level we could

offensively. Defensively, we did all we could. The two goals were

freakish goals. Sturridge, Cahill couldn't get off the floor, Vardy is

there. The Jamie Vardy story goes on! It was an unbelievable feeling,

to get a goal as well, to bring it back to 1-1. It showed what it meant

to all the fans as well. The atmosphere was unbelievable. Daniel

Sturridge, Sturridge scores! Talk about passion. This England team

have it in bucket-loads. After the game we were disappointed,

especially to lose it in that manner. We had a chat straightaway

and it is over. It is a win for St George and defeat for the Dragon. No

matter what happened in the England game, we were going to need a result

from the Russia game. If we can get the ball down and play more, I can

influence it a bit more and the other players can do the same. We

will enjoy it and make sure we enjoy the game. If we do, we hopefully

have the better team to win the game. We have to be confident with

the players we have in the squad. We are a talented bunch. The next one

is to fully focus on Monday night and hopefully pick up the win again.

It is still in our own hands. If you had given us that at the start of

the tournament, we would have taken it. We have all to play for and we

are still very excited. Aren't we all? You will be able to follow

England and Wales' matches across the BBC on Monday night. Tomorrow

night, hosts France look to make it three wins out of three when they

take on Switzerland. Romania-Albania will be on BBC Four at the same

time. Away from the football, Andy Murray is going for a record fifth

Queen's Club title tomorrow a week ahead of Wimbledon.

Let's head back pitchside to the Parc des Princes where we can hear

from Thierry Henry and Dan Walker. Welcome back. As we were walking

down here, Thierry said, ask me why it is not happening for Portugal?

So, why is it not happening for Portugal? Like we saw with France, a

lack of width, guys are supposed to play on the wings are coming inside

too early, so that forces the full-back to go up, that sometimes

can be crucial on the counters. They will have more success when they use

the width. It is not an easy one when you play against a team that

defend in the last third of the park. You need to make the pitch as

big as you can. What do Austria need to do? We have not seen much of

David Alaba. One thing for sure, they have to play long. After, you

know, they need to find Alaba. It is easier to play when you face the

game, when you are playing with your back to the game. You keep on losing

a lot of easy balls. Arnautovic is not in the game. So maybe the tactic

today, I know it might go against the identity, is to skip midfield

and see what can happen on the flick or something else. Even sometimes

Thierry Henry says go long! Sometimes. Off we go. He couldn't

hang in the air long enough. Ronaldo! Misses the target. Nani.

There he is. He's not smiling there. He is starting to get a bit

frustrated, Ronaldo. Let's hope for better things in the second half.

From him as well, Alaba has been very quiet. Will there be a change

of tactics, a change of style? Give us some goals. Let's re-join Martin

Keown and Guy Mowbray. We will do our best. There is no

change in personnel at the start of the second half. There was a lengthy

conversation between the referee and Cristiano Ronaldo. I cannot remember

referee talking to me, I must say. But everyone knows Ronaldo and

everyone wants to talk to him. Austria get the second half going.

Sebastian Prodl looking to find Arnautovic. There will be a Portugal

throw. I wonder if Arnautovic might go down the middle. They need to

change something, Austria, it will be more of the same otherwise. It

has gone back to Martin Hinteregger. That was really good that Rui

Patricio had to save. Stefan Ilsanker bringing pretty much the

first save out of Portugal's keeper tonight. There is a break from the

boys in red but there was an untimely slip from Nani which caused

it to stop. The left-hand side missed a

fantastic strike. The keeper does well to get down to his left hand

side, Parry is it away. That was unexpected. Nothing like it in the

first half. A great technique. It would be some way to score his first

international goal. He might even be grudgingly appreciate the save. He

started out as a keeper, Stefan Ilsanker.

Harnik was stretching too far. The referee's patients has been

stretched too far as well. A yellow card for the Austrian number 11. He

is not complaining. It is that trail in leg. -- trailing

leg. That did not look particularly good

challenge. The suggestion is Quaresma went down to easily. It is

a very strong suggestion from Stefan Ilsanker. I think the message from

half-time was you have got to get tighter to these Portuguese players.

Don't allow them any space. From what you have seen of Robert

Almer in the Austrian goal so far tonight, I don't suppose Portugal

would mind about testing him again. There is Ronaldo. That won't test

him. A bit of a twitch from Fernando

Santos. He is not one to be overemotional on the touchline. He

might be thinking was that a bit too far away for the great Ronaldo?

Austria need to bring Alaba into play a lot more than they have done.

Baumgartlinger no went lunging in when he did not need to.

Carr Valley in the build-up that, little backheel. -- are valued. Such

good awareness. Telling all the strings for Portugal.

Another close, tight challenge. This one goes unchallenged for Christian

Fuchs. I have not said about Gomes match in

the first half, but he is a player who sneaks in, a player who covers a

wide distance. That was well won by Prodl. A good

tackle. Carvalho won the ball fairly in the

referee's view. A bit of a panicky clearance from

Klein. The second time round, he gets it right. A nudge from Joao

Moutinho on Harnik brings Austria the decision. Just using his back

there. The referee has done well. Nothing wrong with that. He has won

the ball cleanly. The 24 William Carvalho has been the

standout player. It is as he has got headphones on and music playing at

the moment -- the 24-year-old. I'm trying to imagine the soundtrack you

had in your head, when you were playing.

That is about the loudest the Portugal end has been all night,

willing the ball in. The ball is out, thanks to Julian

Baumgartlinger. That trips off the tongue much easier when you are

speaking German. It is that quality, you have got to make it count.

No chances taken by Hinteregger. ... They have done well from crosses in

the main. What an atmosphere we have got at

the Parc Des Princes now. Can we get a game to match it? Richard Quaresma

has given his team a free kick. A swing of the legs from Christian

Fuchs. -- Ricardo Quaresma. This will be all about the quality

into the box. The referee is delivering another

sermon. He looks like a parson in that shirt. That is deep. Too deep.

That for Fernando Santos is demonstrative.

I wonder if it will be Gomes who is more likely to score rather than

Nani or Ronaldo. That is a good save for Robert Almer. That is the first

one which has really been crushed by Cristiano Ronaldo. In a flashy just

comes to life. What a shot that is. A great save by the keeper. Almost a

shot in defiance. The ball was out. Ronaldo! Goal-line clearance.

Portugal get on with things in a hurry. It is Alaba away this time.

Baumgartlinger was caught. Austria get the decision here. A great save,

you have to say. And the cross coming in, it is Ronaldo again. Look

at the height he gets there. Heads it down, textbook.

Almer is getting no peppering. -- getting a peppering.

Sabitzer seems little timid when he is on the ball. Baumgartlinger

isn't. He has been strong to win that one.

The flag goes up again. A good ball there.

Sabitzer is in that free role, he is back on the right-hand side. Doing

their jobs manfully. Sabitzer seen fit once more. Nani

was in acres of space there stop chest control from Joao Moutinho.

Fuchs trying to stop the ball in the box at all costs. He does that.

It comes back off him. The referee linesman has done well. That has

been some eagle eyed officiating at this competition.

Too much left. It was skewed behind us well. That is unlike him. Who

blinks first? Who makes the first substitution changed today? As the

group stands, if it ended in a drawer, it would be hungry four

points, Iceland and Portugal two, and Austria one. -- Hungary.

Ricardo Quaresma seemed to have got through. Thought he was fouled. The

referee is coming across, having seen Quaresma down injured, and he

has given a yellow card. The assistant was right there and he did

not do anything. He's just caught him with that

trailing leg. He puts his foot out. OK, he makes a big meal of it, but

he catches him. Not sure why the linesman missed it. Portugal will

prepare themselves to fire another one in at that Austrian goal. Which

is somehow staying protected. A great run from Ronaldo. Pepe,

left-winger, right-footed. It's awkwardly put behind, but at least

safely put behind from Hinteregger's point of view. Hinteregger has done

well when that ball has come in the box. The amount of free headers

Ronaldo has had, his movement is so good from corners. He starts at the

far post and just attacks the ball. That one safely met by Christian

Fuchs. Ricardo Quaresma, Almer - good

claim. Plucked off the head of Ronaldo. It's a different goalkeeper

now, one that is full of confidence, a couple of good saves. I don't

think there will be a rush of clubs to sign him after today, but he is

having a game now, so is Baumgartlinger. He did very well

there. Baumgartlinger has been signed, he is leaving Mainz to join

Bayer Leverkusen. I can sense bit more urgency in the

Portuguese body language and an Austrian change that is going to

happen in a moment. Alessandro Schopf is going to come on.

How was that for a bit of improvisation?

Beautifully done. And Baumgartlinger with the foul. They are getting

closer with these free kick awards. Joao Moutinho is in agony after that

one. You can see why. Yeah. Baumgartlinger just caught him

heavy, he trod on him. Just not quick enough to get there. That man

again, Ronaldo, is pacing up in the background.

Well, with the one he had earlier on in the game, he has had 35 direct

free kick attempts at European Championships and World Cups and

he's never scored. Gareth Bale is already two up on him at these

finals alone. An interesting Austrian change with Alaba coming

off. He must be injured. He is not half the player tonight that we know

he is capable of. You wondered if he was out there at times tonight.

You can almost hear the drum roll here. Ronaldo!

Not his night. Yet. He's given it everything, he just can't get it

up-and-down in the available space. Somewhat closer than the one before,

though. Over 36 now. Baumgartlinger. The slip didn't help

him. The clapping rhythm is coming from

the Austrian contingent in the crowd. Andre Gomes... Kept it away

from Ilsanker, Ronaldo, safely steers it away from Arnautovic.

Good awareness from Pepe. Got to get back now. There is a tap on the

back, the assistant referee didn't think there was anything wrong with

it. Down went Schopf. Pepe needs to be very careful. Already booked, of

course. Ronaldo. Safe hands Almer. Safe hands, but

that was poor quality. Players in the box, Ronaldo was not happy with

that one. We can see more green, spaces are

appearing the full-length of the field.

Joao Moutinho. Almer was never in any mind to come for that. Ronaldo

has caught Hinteregger to give Austria a free kick. You can see

there is no grin anymore... I don't feel that was a foul. He pulls out

of the overhead if you watch. He doesn't... There is not a lot in

that. Portugal are going to have to grind

this one out. So much possession in the first half. Nothing changing

here in the second. Nobody was going for it. It will

bounce out. Goal kick, but only just. Schopf was just trying to get

his foot to it and backheel it against Raphael Guerreiro and he

nearly succeeded. The official next to the goal, who doesn't seem to

make a decision, had a good look at the linesman.

That is going to be an Austria goal kick.

No goals so far tonight. Might we see some tomorrow? That sees the

start of the final group games, which means a choice of viewing

Four, you can see Romania against Albania, if that floats your boat

more, also getting under way at 7.30pm.

Portugal are going to make a change in a moment or two. We have Joao

Mario ready to come on. Joao Moutinho giving the ball away, but

he was caught late, which is a bit of a relief for him because it

wasn't a great pass. Just another word for Julian Baumgartlinger. Do

you think he is not booking him because he doesn't want to spell it?

Yes, possibly so! He has caught his man. He is already on a booking.

He's not. That is why he doesn't want to write it down. Yes. Here is

Joao Mario coming on. Ricardo Quaresma makes way. He was on a

booking. Interesting to see if Portugal

change it in any way at all. Ronaldo now on this left-hand side. Less

central than he was before. Ronaldo. A chance for Joao Mario

straightaway. With just under 19 minutes of the 90

to go, Austria have more than settled for this. I think they are

quite happy with the result as it stands. Backing their chances of

beating Austria in their - Iceland, I beg your pardon - in their final

group game. It would get them off the mark, a point.

Portugal are perhaps trying a bit too hard at the moment.

Baumgartlinger. That was very nicely collected. And a positive run as

well from Schopf. Now it is Sabitzer.

We saw the reaction of Marko Arnautovic when he wasn't allowed to

do anything with the free kick that Alaba struck from an angle. He is

They will wonder how on earth they haven't got their first win on the

board. We do know why - it is because of one key moment in

a penalty. Portugal might need to win their

final group game and Austria will need to beat Iceland. No goals, but

plenty went on in Paris tonight. Portugal 0, Austria 0.

STUDIO: Cristiano Ronaldo, what an evening for him. Quite an enjoyable

0-0 in many ways. But not a result that Portugal would have wanted and

probably not Austria either. They would settle for that given the

circumstances of that game. Let's have a look at Group F.

Portugal are third, but a win against Hungary will guarantee they

reach the last 16. Anything else and the Portuguese permutations become

complex. It is simple for Austria - they have to beat Iceland or they

are definitely out. I have watched Ronaldo for many

years. I can't quite recall him having an evening like that one?

Remember the date because we have witnessed something tonight, one of

the greatest goalscorers of all time having a nightmare. It was one, two,

three - we were sat here in disbelief. It shows what he is made

of, the fact that he keeps going? Also, it shows he is human. What he

has been doing over the last ten years is relentless goalscoring

achievement after achievement. Today, what I would say is, he

didn't get the rub of the green, he didn't put the ball in the net, his

head didn't go down, he was still getting in there, that is why these

players are great players. When the chance goes begging, nay get up,

brush themselves down and get back in for another one. It was an

extraordinary game. We have seen a lot of these at this tournament

where the finishing has not been as good as previously. You don't expect

it from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo? You don't. Portugal

completely dominated the play today. You had a feeling when he stepped up

for that penalty - we had a conversation between ourselves,

surely not? It wasn't to be. When he pulled that penalty on to the pace,

wow. After his comments about Iceland, he won't be getting too

much sympathy from those guys. We sat there, I'm thinking, I don't

fancy him. I thought the same thing. Five or six chances before that,

he's had two big chances in the previous game. It was a penalty.

Yes. His movement was great. He got the wrong side of the defender. It

was a penalty. It's the space that he wants to attack. The defender

panics. When he knows that space is behind him, he thinks, I have to do

something to stop him. It's a clear penalty. You panic in there. He

misses. His movement in the box was so good that led to it. And he hits

the post. He has missed four of his last five penalties. If he has

missed four or five chances in the game, which you have done quite

often(!) Only once! Is there more pressure then? Absolutely. You never

want to shy away from it, I wouldn't. You have a chance to score

a goal. If he puts that in, all the other chances are forgotten. The

pressure is right on you there because of the four or five you have

missed. What about that, the fact that he has missed four out of five,

do you not think somebody should step up? I have missed one or two.

You do. Even the greatest. Yes, I can't remember missing as many

chances in a game, six or seven we have counted... They were big

chances for him. That is why we are discussing it, because of who he is,

and his record with goalscoring. He did get the ball into the net,

clearly offside. But a good spot from the referee's assistant? A very

good spot. Also good play from the Austrian backline, to hold your line

like that. He is offside. The backline drops early. They hold

their line, they stay brave. You see Ronaldo behind you, the instinct is

to pick him up. His face tells you the story. It wasn't his night. He's

had 20 shots in this tournament, four on target. That is 20 shots,

ten in each game. No goals. His movement here, he takes the defender

away. Beautiful play from the striker. And he runs in and attacks

the space. The finish wasn't good. Listen, you can't fault his effort.

And his determination to constantly keep getting in there time after

time and not be afraid to miss another one. I tell you one thing...

What a save this is. He had a great game, Almer. That is when we sat

here thinking, you know what, he ain't going to score tonight. You

are getting so many, the goalkeeper pulls off a brilliant save. The leap

is superb. I wouldn't like to be the Hungary back four. He's going to be

going into that game an angry man. The desperation will unreal. If the

manager selects him! He's missed four out of his last five penalties,

when you on a run where you haven't scored from penalties and free kick,

you think to yourself, someone will say, can I have one? Can you imagine

his reaction? He would give him the look. What about Austria? They will

be delighted they have hung on there, they have shown great spirit

and resilience. Almer was terrific? Yes, they didn't create a lot.

Portugal dominated the majority of possession. But they hung on. They

have another point out of it. And I don't think they are the team that

people may be thought they were coming into the competition. I'm

sure they are not. We know that now. They will be delighted with that

point. We have gone through the game. This was at the start of the

second half. A good effort. A good save. It was the only bit of quality

that they put together. It was a strike from Ilsanker, the striker

who laid it off to him was a handful throughout the game. That was...

That was it. Then when you have been dominated by another team, and you

do get an opportunity, a free kick from 20 yards out... I know. What

was this about? This is your opportunity, have a crack at goal.

What is that? Out of the three people around the ball, he was the

one with the least finesse. No wonder the manager is going mad.

Wrong! Going back to the first half, Ronaldo was not the only player for

Portugal that had chances. Nani had a couple as well, who scored of

course in the first game. Yes, I thought he was bright in the first

half. He scored in the first game. Another great save. From probably

the Man of the Match. Absolutely. You thought Austria could pop up

with something here. They never amounted to anything when they had

the ball. It was one of them days. Usually when teams miss chances, you

pay for it. I don't think Austria had that cutting-edge or quality to

do it. A great evening for them. Certainly was. Let's head back to

the Parc des Princes where Thierry is back with Dan.

Welcome back to pitchside. I wanted to show you this. The Austrian

players are getting a huge reception from their fans. Thierry Henry, you

find that confusing. They have one point from two games. Listen, in a

way, I am, like, listen, it is amazing to see that. They lost the

first game. They drew today. They think they can beat Iceland because

they are like, they are acting like, you know, that they are going

through, or they just went through. Give the Austrian fans a lot of

credit. They are outstanding. They did support the team, the way the

team was playing, so give them the credit. They only have one point. I

have to ask you about the star man on the other side. He did have a

selfie with a fan on the pitch at the end, but nothing else went right

for him. Free kicks, missed, goal disallowed. And you felt he was

going to miss the penalty. Why? He created a lot of chances. He was in

the box. Normally, he would have scored two, or a hat-trick. He

didn't. I don't know why. When he was about to take the penalty, I

didn't fancy him to score. He started to speak with the referee

before he was taking it. I didn't fancy him because sometime you can

see in the game when a player is not at it. He was not at it maybe

tonight. I still back him to score in the third game. He is a great

player. It can happen. I missed so many penalties. I didn't fancy him

to score tonight. You will be back in the studio tomorrow covering your

country France. You have seen everybody play. Do you believe the

hosts have a great chance, having seen everyone else, of winning this?

I still think so. I think we are still looking to find the right way,

the right formation yet. We won two important games. Did we play well? I

don't think so. Did we fight well? Yes, we did. So that team can be

better and will be better, hopefully. Now, I saw Italy and

Spain, too. We obviously going to have to play better than what we

have shown recently. That team has quality, I believe in that team. I

believe in France. Do you know only one man in the history of the Euros

Austria are teams which people had them down as outsiders. I went with

France at the beginning. England? They have surprised me with how well

they have played in the tournament. Whether they can go on and do

anything. Just because they have not put the ball in the back of the net,

granted, but I think the performance. I think with the

Spanish team and the French team and the German team, they are asking a

lot of questions. England are still finding their way, I believe. No one

has really stood out yet. Pyatt. To match -- two French players as well.

Is ever a country needed a goal, it was that game and that goal. That

guy did it. He has done it all season with West Ham and now he has

done it twice. When he gets the opportunity, a lot of people said he

would pass it. The impressive thing about France is the manager and how

he has dealt with leaving big players out. Then he brought them on

again in the second game in the second half and they have turned the

game. Overall, the quality of the football, the ratio and percentage

of goals is as low as we have seen in any major tournament. Is that a

concern? Wherein the group stages. I think when we get into the last 16,

the quality will inevitably increase. It will get better. Rio?

Teams are coming out. The starting teams can sometimes suppressed

talent at times. We hope teams become more open and free stock to

have two teams trying to win a game would be nice. It has to be a good

thing for players who might never get a chance to play in a

competition like this, for fans who might not get the opportunity to

come and watch. That is a good thing but I don't think the standard has

been as high. Were almost out of time. Thank you very much. On one
