Welcome to viewers on BBC Two, we are here live with the final section

:00:11.:00:21.

of the modern pentathlon. Is his shooting letting him down, the

:00:22.:00:26.

combined run shoot, the final event of the pentathlon is now on BBC Two.

:00:27.:00:33.

The Russian is way ahead of the field. He has got the gold medal

:00:34.:00:37.

sewn up unless something goes drastically wrong. You can see the

:00:38.:00:50.

gap behind him, Alexander Lesun. The Italian bearer. He is being

:00:51.:00:54.

overtaken by 24. -- Ismael Marcelo Hernandez Uscanga.

:00:55.:01:12.

The Ukrainian is in the bronze medal position. 32-macro there, in the

:01:13.:01:17.

yellow and green of Australia. His sister got the gold medal here

:01:18.:01:35.

yesterday -- Max Esposito. He had an excellent fence at the start of the

:01:36.:01:39.

day. He did really well in the swim, we think he is in tenth position

:01:40.:01:49.

now, 28. This is a real battle for the bronze medal position -- Jinhwa

:01:50.:01:58.

Jung. The gold medal goes to Alexander Lesun. The race coming up,

:01:59.:02:13.

Ismael Marcelo Hernandez Uscanga of Mexico wins and modern pentathlon

:02:14.:02:18.

medal for his country. Alexander Lesun, the only Russian here in the

:02:19.:02:22.

modern pentathlon team finishes in first place. His team-mate was

:02:23.:02:31.

banned in the controversy over doping. It looks as though it will

:02:32.:02:40.

be a ninth place for Jinhwa Jung. James Cook crossing over the line.

:02:41.:02:49.

You have been keeping an eye on the placings. We think James Cook was in

:02:50.:02:55.

13th place. He has moved up a few spots. -- James Cooke. A

:02:56.:03:06.

disappointing final run for him even to go for the medals. He has got a

:03:07.:03:11.

great future ahead of him. Absolutely. This was an amazing

:03:12.:03:20.

position for Joseph Choong to BN. He has given it his all and he should

:03:21.:03:26.

be proud. He has gleaned so much experience for this competition. At

:03:27.:03:32.

the end of the day, there were better and more experienced athletes

:03:33.:03:37.

out there. The times were so close, the field was so bunched together,

:03:38.:03:41.

it was a real battle for those medals. Alexander Lesun walked the

:03:42.:03:46.

gold medal but the others were very tight. Silver medal for Pavlo

:03:47.:03:53.

Tymoshchenko from Ukraine. And Ismael Marcelo Hernandez Uscanga

:03:54.:03:59.

from Mexico moved from sixth place to third place. So no medals for

:04:00.:04:06.

Team GB in the modern pentathlon in 2016, the first time since Steph won

:04:07.:04:10.

her gold medal in London since that has happened. Lots to learn, when we

:04:11.:04:17.

refresh in Tokyo in four years' time. CLARE BALDING: Matthew Pinsent

:04:18.:04:24.

was watching the final stages. You have been following it throughout

:04:25.:04:29.

and for 13 macro, a disappointing finish but when you try to shoot and

:04:30.:04:37.

you are exhausted, it can have a disastrous effect -- Joseph Choong.

:04:38.:04:45.

The skill of the combined event is to give everything into the run and

:04:46.:04:50.

your breathing very heavily, your arms are going up and down, people

:04:51.:04:57.

do not notice, it is a laser weapon, every time you have to put the gun

:04:58.:05:02.

down to reload, it is electronic, it is going up and down, you are

:05:03.:05:07.

breathing, it is very difficult. There was no way in reality that he

:05:08.:05:11.

had the experience in modern pentathlon to deal with that

:05:12.:05:15.

situation and his first Olympics, he has hardly finished in any ranking

:05:16.:05:19.

event in the top ten before now. Seven in the Europeans was his best

:05:20.:05:24.

result. Let us give him credit, he has done well to put himself in a

:05:25.:05:35.

position for that and I do not think you can call it disappointing. For

:05:36.:05:38.

both of them, Matthew, the same thing for the women yesterday, the

:05:39.:05:40.

very first ranking for the fencing was costly. It is enormous. In that

:05:41.:05:46.

opening preliminary round fencing, you fight against everyone else in

:05:47.:05:50.

the competition, your wins are tarted up and your losses and that

:05:51.:05:55.

ratio gives you the points and we had that with Samantha Murray, her

:05:56.:06:00.

quote was, I fenced like an idiot in her opening round which put her a

:06:01.:06:04.

long way back from the medal position. James Cooke, probably our

:06:05.:06:13.

number one ranked male athlete,... There he is right there. Hang on.

:06:14.:06:23.

The usual politics with the mixed zone. Delighted. How was your

:06:24.:06:34.

performance? It was good. I started off terribly with the offence. The

:06:35.:06:41.

other day. It did not start from there but then I said to myself as

:06:42.:06:44.

long as I make myself proud in the other events, the swimming was very

:06:45.:06:50.

good, Ambrose probably beat me about ten times this year so it was nice

:06:51.:06:55.

to get him. I was pleased with the ride, it was tricky, but I got

:06:56.:06:59.

around, but the atmosphere was incredible. Family and friends were

:07:00.:07:05.

here which was nice. How badly were you kicking yourself about that

:07:06.:07:09.

opening fans? It is something we have been working on for the last

:07:10.:07:13.

three years and it has been going so well. I always said, 2016 cannot be

:07:14.:07:21.

a bad year, I finished as world number one, I won two World Cups, it

:07:22.:07:27.

hurts, but I am proud of my year but not quite proud of my fencing. What

:07:28.:07:33.

kind of performance was realistic when you came into Rio? Everyone

:07:34.:07:40.

comes in here to win medals, with medals and ahead and that is

:07:41.:07:44.

something I wanted to do. I just did not put myself in the best position,

:07:45.:07:49.

the fencing killed me. It was like rowing with one or. I left myself a

:07:50.:08:00.

lot of work to do. First Olympics, lots to think about. This is

:08:01.:08:04.

inspiring so I definitely want to be back. Just a word about Joseph

:08:05.:08:10.

Choong, what kind of performance did he put in to put himself in that

:08:11.:08:16.

position? He is not your average Joe, here's a fantastic athlete. He

:08:17.:08:23.

is incredibly talented, he had the best competition of his life and

:08:24.:08:26.

unfortunately he did not hold it there. But he put himself in the

:08:27.:08:31.

right position and that is all you can ask. We are talking about you.

:08:32.:08:36.

How was your competition? Everything went really well except for the

:08:37.:08:42.

shooting, to be honest. I had been first going into a competition

:08:43.:08:46.

before, I was very happy with my first shoot, you cannot ask for more

:08:47.:08:50.

and the last shoot was the same. It was just the middle, I do not know

:08:51.:08:55.

what happened. I felt I was shooting fine, but the target is not going

:08:56.:08:59.

off, so it was my fault. Have you ever been in that position going

:09:00.:09:04.

into the combined before? Since the under 18 's, I am used to starting

:09:05.:09:12.

first. I have got good memories and experience from those times.

:09:13.:09:15.

Unfortunately it did not work today and I do not know why. How do some

:09:16.:09:21.

up the pentathlon performance from Britain? There were definitely some

:09:22.:09:26.

positives. The girls finishing top ten was incredible after they're

:09:27.:09:30.

fairly per offences they had, compared to the normal high

:09:31.:09:33.

standards. Jamie did well coming back. His swim was back to his

:09:34.:09:41.

personal best. Definite positives to take away. Well done both of you,

:09:42.:09:49.

something to build from. Can we say thanks to all of our family who are

:09:50.:09:54.

up there watching us. Thank you to the national lottery as well,

:09:55.:09:58.

without them we would not be here. Job done, well done. Joseph Choong

:09:59.:10:05.

finishing ninth and Jamie in 14th place. Matthew has followed the

:10:06.:10:10.

modern pentathlon throughout. Great Britain still waiting for a medal in

:10:11.:10:16.

individual terms, but in 1976, the team got a gold medal. I promise we

:10:17.:10:20.

will bring you up-to-date with the diving, Noel Tom Daley, he finished

:10:21.:10:25.

last and failed to qualify for the final of the 10m platform, but gold

:10:26.:10:31.

went to China and it was their younger diver who was absolutely

:10:32.:10:37.

sensational. Look at this for a final dive.

:10:38.:11:00.

Aisen Chen who had withstood the pressure of coming here with all the

:11:01.:11:06.

expectation, he is only 20 years old and it is his first Olympics and

:11:07.:11:19.

while his compatriot Bo Qiu had a terrible around, but Aisen Chen

:11:20.:11:26.

remains superb throughout. Sanchez finished second, a silver medal for

:11:27.:11:39.

Mexico, but America took the bronze medal with David Boudia. We will

:11:40.:11:46.

move to the flyweight boxing, Nicola Adams, this is how she performed

:11:47.:11:55.

today. Nicola Adams, looking to join the shortlist of Olympic boxing

:11:56.:12:00.

legends, taking a brace of titles in the boxing ring. Head up. No

:12:01.:12:08.

holding. An Olympic gold medal bout about to get underway. Here we go.

:12:09.:12:14.

The first of the scheduled rounds in the final. Nicola Adams has

:12:15.:12:21.

demonstrated terrific variety, targeting the head and body from the

:12:22.:12:29.

right flanks. Into the second round, Nicola Adams sweeping the opening

:12:30.:12:36.

round unanimously with 10-9 from all the judges. A wonderful one, two

:12:37.:12:42.

from Adams who is finding a range and rhythm and timing. Two rounds

:12:43.:12:48.

completed, both of the completed round so far have scored in favour

:12:49.:12:53.

of the reigning Olympic champion, Nicola Adams. Working well but that

:12:54.:12:57.

left jab but Sarah Ourahmoune is getting closer with her punches.

:12:58.:13:01.

Nicola Adams fell short there. Sarah Ourahmoune with that increased

:13:02.:13:06.

success has swept round three across the board, one point is in it. All

:13:07.:13:11.

of her ring craft and experience will be put to the test as Sarah

:13:12.:13:15.

Ourahmoune trying to work away at close range. Both boxers continuing

:13:16.:13:20.

to extract the best from one another. Incredibly tight gold medal

:13:21.:13:24.

bout between two familiar rivals. Nicola Adams lets out a triumphant

:13:25.:13:31.

roar having been crowned as Olympic champion for the second successive

:13:32.:13:39.

time. I am now officially the most accomplished amateur boxer ever. It

:13:40.:13:42.

is such an amazing feeling. It takes a lot to win an Olympic medal,

:13:43.:13:47.

especially to be able to do it twice. One of the most electrifying

:13:48.:13:53.

smiles in all of sport, beaming from ear to ear, a great performance from

:13:54.:13:58.

Nicola Adams, Gold medallist for the second successive time in the

:13:59.:14:03.

flyweight division. Anthony Joshua is with me, you were ringside for

:14:04.:14:08.

Nicola Adams, how pleased were you with? I have known her for years,

:14:09.:14:13.

watching her train and it is a struggle that not everyone gets to

:14:14.:14:17.

see. The glory, the victory and the smile on her face, she will shed a

:14:18.:14:22.

tear. I was not going to cry, but I felt that with her.

:14:23.:14:28.

Within moments you want Ritchie wasn't doing enough? I gauged her

:14:29.:14:34.

opponent's tactics, she's quite explosive. I was happy because I

:14:35.:14:37.

could see Nicola controlling the fight, jabbing between those

:14:38.:14:41.

moments. The opponent was ferocious and I was thinking, it's an Olympic

:14:42.:14:46.

final, of course you will have two people very close in styles, in

:14:47.:14:51.

ability. Nicola managed to pull through, control the battle. How

:14:52.:14:56.

much is her success down to the training, technique, but also her

:14:57.:15:01.

sheer enjoyment of it all? Her love of the sport? You deftly got it

:15:02.:15:04.

right, I was going to say that. Yeah, it's hard work, it's

:15:05.:15:08.

discipline, but everyone works hard, you have to enjoy what you do so it

:15:09.:15:12.

doesn't become work. Find a passion you can follow so when you are doing

:15:13.:15:16.

it it doesn't feel like work. Its regiment, it's routine. She's been

:15:17.:15:22.

doing it so many years and it with a smile on her face, that's what

:15:23.:15:24.

brings out the best in her. Tomorrow you will lose your reign as Olympic

:15:25.:15:28.

champion, occurs in the superiority wait final whatever happens there

:15:29.:15:32.

will be a new champion, Joe Joyce for Great Britain, what do you think

:15:33.:15:35.

his chances are of emulating you and then exclusive -- then Lennox Lewis

:15:36.:15:45.

and Vitali Klitschko. We've been on the server together since he was 18,

:15:46.:15:49.

19. I've seen him, the hard way, he's had it tough, stuck with it,

:15:50.:15:53.

had good times, got his chance to come to the GB squad. Now he's

:15:54.:15:57.

representing his country in the final. Look at Joe Joyce's story

:15:58.:16:02.

from grassroots to champion, I'm going to call him a champion because

:16:03.:16:05.

I believe you can achieve that, it'll be a phenomenal story, I got

:16:06.:16:09.

to from day one. You know what it takes to become Olympic champion,

:16:10.:16:14.

what do you need more than anything else? Your team, your team, these

:16:15.:16:20.

are the people that will keep you grounded, as I've always mentioned,

:16:21.:16:24.

sometimes your struggle is your greatest success, it's all good

:16:25.:16:27.

celebrating with all your family and friends, it's the people who are

:16:28.:16:31.

with you through the struggle. You need people that were always

:16:32.:16:34.

uplifted and ride with you until the walls fall. For me the greatest

:16:35.:16:39.

asset is your team. Jo has got that? Yeah, look up at him we took to

:16:40.:16:44.

2012, the team we brought here, the 14 qualified, he's got a phenomenal

:16:45.:16:47.

team around him, that's why I'm confident of him winning his medal

:16:48.:16:51.

tomorrow. It could be Great Britain's last medal of the Olympic

:16:52.:16:55.

Games, it'll take place at 7:15pm tomorrow evening.

:16:56.:17:02.

And again. Pushback. Touch. And again. Step. Good. And again.

:17:03.:17:25.

Joe Joyce is ready and wants to follow in the footsteps of Anthony

:17:26.:17:39.

Joshua, who is tall, it's not often I have to do an interview with the

:17:40.:17:43.

microphone up here. Later on BBC Two we'll be joining the gold medal

:17:44.:17:48.

football match between Brazil and Germany. Massive excitement around

:17:49.:17:51.

here, I suspect if goals are scored we will hear the cheer in Olympic

:17:52.:17:56.

Park. You'll certainly hear it in Copacabana even if it's being played

:17:57.:17:59.

at the Maracana, which is quite a way away, how is your evening? Every

:18:00.:18:04.

bar and Prescott is packed behind me at Copacabana. Myself and my guest

:18:05.:18:08.

in the studio, I work show you who they are, were thinking you may be

:18:09.:18:13.

needed a box for your interview. We've got a lot to fit in before

:18:14.:18:17.

Brazil and Germany kick off. We'll start with tae kwon do. It's been a

:18:18.:18:22.

great competition for Britain so far with a gold and silver. TJ Jones.

:18:23.:18:29.

Really euphoric. Lutalo Muhammad's silver committee was disconsolate

:18:30.:18:33.

after losing his final in the last second. Two more Britons in action,

:18:34.:18:37.

let's tell you how they've got on. We start with Bianca walked in, who

:18:38.:18:47.

got as far as the semifinal. -- Bianca Walkden. She was beaten 4-1.

:18:48.:18:54.

She'll go in the bronze medal match. We can show you as well... This is

:18:55.:19:05.

her losing. So the bronze medal match will take place sometime

:19:06.:19:12.

around 1am, we'll try to bring you that. Cho has gone out in the

:19:13.:19:25.

semifinal. Beaten by his opponent from Azerbaijan. It'll be a bronze

:19:26.:19:27.

medal match for him as well. Bianca will at 1am Camacho will go

:19:28.:19:41.

at 1:15am. We will show you what happened in the canoe sprint. It's

:19:42.:19:46.

been a good lake for Team GB for rowing and canoeing sprint. Liam

:19:47.:19:50.

Heath already had a silver in the double event, today he was going for

:19:51.:19:54.

gold in the men's single 100 metres, this is what happened.

:19:55.:19:59.

Very exciting here at the Lagoon. The men's 200 metres. In lane five,

:20:00.:20:07.

Liam Heath of Great Britain, the sizzling hot favourite for this

:20:08.:20:12.

event. The speed he paddles that is quite sensational, anyone who gets a

:20:13.:20:16.

good start is in with a shout out medals, we expect this to be close.

:20:17.:20:20.

Away they go, watch out for Liam Heath. Not the best of starts. Four

:20:21.:20:26.

from this side. He's looking to repeat Britain's success. Lane four.

:20:27.:20:32.

Beaumont of France has the lead. The closing stages is when he succumbed

:20:33.:20:37.

strong, but he's got work to do. 70 metres to go. Service closing stages

:20:38.:20:47.

where Liam Heath is strong. Liam Heath has the lead, another 15

:20:48.:20:54.

minutes to go -- 50 metres to go. Gold goes to Liam Heath. He came

:20:55.:20:59.

here as the favourite, he will leave Rio as the Olympic champion. And the

:21:00.:21:03.

most successful British Olympic paddler of all time. He has a gold,

:21:04.:21:08.

a silver and bronze to his collection. He leaps from seventh to

:21:09.:21:16.

the first in the tally of British paddlers. Sensational run. Out of

:21:17.:21:20.

the Olympic champion sound? Incredible, it's been in my mind

:21:21.:21:25.

every single day for the last four gears. I want to say a massive thank

:21:26.:21:28.

you to everyone who's been supporting me, friends, family,

:21:29.:21:31.

Johnny, my coach, Alex, all the support crew behind me. You've

:21:32.:21:36.

become the most successful Olympian when it comes to canoe sprint

:21:37.:21:41.

athletes for Great Britain. Exceeding Tim Robinson, what does it

:21:42.:21:44.

mean to you? I hadn't really thought about it. I glimpsed it on Facebook

:21:45.:21:48.

yesterday, try to keep away from my phone and stuff. -- Tim Brad

:21:49.:21:54.

I look to those guys. Tim is one of my idols. I remember watching him

:21:55.:22:03.

when was little. All the guys who have competed for Great Britain all

:22:04.:22:08.

the years. I still look up to them, I still feel I need to achieve what

:22:09.:22:12.

they've done. It's an absolutely incredible feeling.

:22:13.:22:20.

APPLAUSE CHEERING

:22:21.:22:57.

COMMENTATOR: Gold medal number 25 for Great Britain, great to see Liam

:22:58.:22:59.

Heath notching up another gold. I'm delighted to say Liam is in the

:23:00.:23:08.

studio along with John Scofield. 2-1 the silver medal with in the pairs.

:23:09.:23:13.

Doing what all mates do and taking the Mickey out of Liam. Someone's

:23:14.:23:19.

got to. Congratulations. That is when you said it's been in your mind

:23:20.:23:24.

every day for four years. Is it something you wake up thinking about

:23:25.:23:27.

and have lunch thinking about, go to bed thinking about? It's always in

:23:28.:23:33.

the back of your mind, not always at the forefront, you've always got it

:23:34.:23:36.

they're hedging you want to get you into training every day, crack of

:23:37.:23:42.

dawn. Always at the back of your mind. Any Olympian says it isn't,

:23:43.:23:48.

they are lying. It's always there. Is it the case if you go on holiday

:23:49.:23:52.

for two weeks, you raised your eyes, I don't know whether he's gone on

:23:53.:23:58.

holiday. Even then, can you put it to one side and it is if you're

:23:59.:24:04.

having a break? It's very important to have a rest, you've got to relax,

:24:05.:24:08.

recuperate your body. Every now and then. You do go away and you do have

:24:09.:24:16.

drinks, a few cakes, a few deserts. In the back of your mind you think

:24:17.:24:22.

you have to work this off, you have to pay for it. You do allow yourself

:24:23.:24:26.

those little breaks. When working as a pair when you came back off

:24:27.:24:31.

holiday, did you confess to each other how many jam tarts you'd had,

:24:32.:24:35.

how many beers? You can tell. LAUGHTER

:24:36.:24:40.

When you are a little bit skinnier, then round around the edges. You

:24:41.:24:45.

have those holidays. To make yourself want it. When you come

:24:46.:24:49.

back. Something like eating that cake on holiday, having beers, it's

:24:50.:24:54.

to make sure you are mentally in the right headspace to hammer the next

:24:55.:24:58.

however many weeks and achieve what you want to do. How have you been

:24:59.:25:02.

watching him the last couple of days? Pretty nerve wracking, the

:25:03.:25:06.

start didn't make it any easier to enjoy the racing, if you'd had a

:25:07.:25:10.

great start he would have been had all the way. As it was he had a

:25:11.:25:18.

confident start. It was amazing. Assess the race. We'll show it

:25:19.:25:23.

again. You can talk us through. It's the second time I've seen it now. I

:25:24.:25:27.

normally walk away. I got out the gate really good, this time, bit of

:25:28.:25:32.

a headwind, it was going to be a longer race. I wanted to pace it

:25:33.:25:36.

more. Keep the speed down on the last bit. Which has been a strength

:25:37.:25:42.

this year in K2 and K-1. This point you have no clue where anyone is,

:25:43.:25:47.

all you know is how far down you are. The boys change colour. When

:25:48.:25:55.

you hit the last 50, I've been able to give it so much more towards the

:25:56.:25:59.

line this season, really push. In your head as you do that you are

:26:00.:26:04.

counting strokes? Yeah. It's something I've done ever since I

:26:05.:26:07.

started. It's something subconscious as well. I'll be paddling along, all

:26:08.:26:12.

of a sudden I've got a number in my head. What I've been paddling. It's

:26:13.:26:20.

like 86-90 strokes down the race, you hit 45, you are halfway, 60-65,

:26:21.:26:27.

50 metres left. Then the start you hit it hard, for eight strokes, I'm

:26:28.:26:31.

not breeding the first eight strokes, after that, you start

:26:32.:26:34.

getting the oxygen in, then setting up the rest of the race. Is that how

:26:35.:26:38.

you are coached? Do you count as well? I don't count as well as him.

:26:39.:26:45.

When you both get out do you different numbers? You do compare.

:26:46.:26:51.

It's normally a competition between my head and the GPS. My technology.

:26:52.:26:57.

A gymnastics coach thought one of the successes for Britain in a

:26:58.:27:00.

variety of sports was the gym culture we live in at the moment

:27:01.:27:03.

over the last five years, a lot of people say it's nothing to be a

:27:04.:27:07.

barrister back, going to the gym, taking selfies, pumping weights. Do

:27:08.:27:11.

you think it helps? Training in the gym? That... That we have the

:27:12.:27:17.

culture around it, that we now have a fitness culture in the country to

:27:18.:27:21.

a certain extent? Yeah, I think it helps a little bit. Certainly it

:27:22.:27:26.

makes it acceptable to be a certain size, especially for the girls in

:27:27.:27:30.

our squad, to be tall, athletic, muscular and strong, that's letting

:27:31.:27:35.

more girls coming to the sport. It's not just a male preserve. You do

:27:36.:27:40.

chin-ups with 90 kilograms do you? Yeah, little bit over that, but

:27:41.:27:46.

yeah. That's roughly doing a chin up with me holding on to you. Don't

:27:47.:27:50.

worry. I haven't got it set up in the studio! Hanging from the lights.

:27:51.:27:55.

That's how you get strength? It's one key thing we've been working on.

:27:56.:28:00.

Everyone thinks you paddle with your arms, I kind of disagree, that is a

:28:01.:28:04.

big connection between you and the water. I tend to use my back more,

:28:05.:28:08.

the legs and the trunk, to generate power. That I put down through the

:28:09.:28:13.

puddles, through the boat into the water, to push the forwards. We've

:28:14.:28:17.

been key on the chin-ups. It's just one chin, it's not multiple. Just

:28:18.:28:25.

once. I stand there, do it, drop down. It's still more than most of

:28:26.:28:30.

us can do. No wrecks with 90 kilograms tonight, you can eat and

:28:31.:28:34.

drink whatever you want and not feel guilty about it, and enjoy what you

:28:35.:28:37.

do in the future. Congratulations. Thank you very much. Thank you.

:28:38.:28:44.

Maybe I'll try a chin up later. Let's talk football. Down there they

:28:45.:28:49.

are obsessed about one gold medal in particular. That is the Brazil men's

:28:50.:28:54.

football team winning Olympic gold. An Olympic gold they have never won.

:28:55.:29:00.

And in the back of their mind is the 7-1 defeat to Germany in the World

:29:01.:29:03.

Cup semifinal from a couple of years ago. Germany the opponents in this

:29:04.:29:07.

final. Here's what happened in the first half.

:29:08.:29:11.

COMMENTATOR: It's a decent effort against the frame of the goal by

:29:12.:29:30.

Julian Brandt, who almost did silence the Maracana. Here comes

:29:31.:29:42.

Neymar. It's in the back of the net! The darling of Brazil provides the

:29:43.:29:48.

opening goal. And you can probably hear the roof on the Maracana is

:29:49.:29:53.

starting to reverberate. Brazil ahead. 27 minutes. What a goal.

:29:54.:30:04.

Truly outstanding from Neymar. The goalkeeper can't get anywhere near

:30:05.:30:08.

it, it's the power and precision in off the crossbar. He couldn't get

:30:09.:30:12.

it. Couldn't strike it any better, Neymar. What a super goal. To open

:30:13.:30:18.

up what has been a very, very entertaining opening half an hour in

:30:19.:30:21.

this Olympic gold medal match. What a goal that is from Neymar.

:30:22.:30:29.

Against the frame of the goal again! Sven Bender flicked it goal bound

:30:30.:30:45.

but could not score. So that is how the first half finish, this is live

:30:46.:30:51.

now, it is still 1-0 to Brazil, there is a whole country on

:30:52.:30:55.

tenterhooks, let us join our commentators. Since falling behind,

:30:56.:31:03.

Germany have had the better of the possession, some wonderful chances,

:31:04.:31:06.

they will feel that they ought to be level. This partisan Brazilian

:31:07.:31:16.

crowd, they know that this game is far from done. The referee in a good

:31:17.:31:25.

position there. I think if Brazil are to go on and win this, Augusto

:31:26.:31:33.

is the key, he dictates the temple, he is always available for his

:31:34.:31:36.

team-mates when they are in possession. I think he made a

:31:37.:31:41.

mistake there but he got away with it. If there is one big difference

:31:42.:31:49.

between a senior side and an under 23 site, it is the choices they make

:31:50.:31:59.

a crucial times. Perhaps his decision was not the best to try and

:32:00.:32:05.

go down a Brazilian cul-de-sac. Here is Gabriel Barbosa. His decision was

:32:06.:32:15.

not the best. His -- he got away with that. Sule. Brilliant. Breaking

:32:16.:32:21.

up the play, freeing up Gabriel Barbosa, but he wants to get back on

:32:22.:32:28.

his left foot, could he go down the line, try and take Sule a run.

:32:29.:32:33.

Becoming a little frenetic in the past few minutes. When Brazil get

:32:34.:32:44.

into the final third, the expectation is buzzing around them

:32:45.:32:50.

are,. With Germany get into the Brazilian final third, you can hear

:32:51.:32:55.

screams and shouts of horror and fear among the Brazilian supporters.

:32:56.:33:05.

-- Maracana. I am sure those emotions are mirrored up and down

:33:06.:33:13.

this country. Here is Neymar. Could not find the intended target and

:33:14.:33:17.

Germany again break down a Brazilian move. Good tackling. 70 No emerges

:33:18.:33:30.

with that. The tackles flying them, superb to watch -- 79-macro. --

:33:31.:33:47.

Walace. Many of these players prepare a week in week out, they

:33:48.:33:51.

have a competitive league fixture and for them it is things like the

:33:52.:33:56.

World Cup and the Euros or the copper America that matter. You

:33:57.:34:01.

could be forgiven for thinking that this was not the focus of every

:34:02.:34:05.

single player that we have watched tonight a gold medal match matters

:34:06.:34:12.

enormously to those at there -- Copa America. They want their countries

:34:13.:34:21.

to win tonight. Neither Germany nor Brazil have ever won a gold medal.

:34:22.:34:28.

They have won nine World Cups between them, this is the only

:34:29.:34:31.

significant international crown neither can burst. -- boast. Quite

:34:32.:34:41.

content at the moment, Brazil, dropping very deep, allowing

:34:42.:34:48.

pressure to be built upon them and Germany can be taken advantage of,

:34:49.:34:52.

with all the possession that they are getting. Here is Toljan, plenty

:34:53.:35:03.

forward from Germany, that was not good by Sven Bender, well tidied up

:35:04.:35:15.

by Walace. It is only when you see the close-ups of some of these

:35:16.:35:19.

players that you remember how useful they actually are. -- -- youthful.

:35:20.:35:37.

Meyer. Sven Bender. Toljan. There is the equaliser that Germany have

:35:38.:35:41.

threatened for so long. The captain of Germany cancels out the goal from

:35:42.:35:46.

the captain of Brazil and if the warning signs were not apparent

:35:47.:35:51.

before, they are most evident now, they deserved equaliser and they

:35:52.:35:56.

have silenced the Maracana! It has certainly been coming, given away

:35:57.:36:03.

from Marquinhos and as soon as Sven Bender picks up the ball, you can

:36:04.:36:08.

see Toljan is on the move, always looking to get forward and he has

:36:09.:36:12.

the presence of mind and awareness, just to pull it back in front of the

:36:13.:36:19.

Brazilian defence and Max Meyer, real quality finish from him to

:36:20.:36:26.

place it beyond 81-macro win gold. Superb finish. 200 billion

:36:27.:36:30.

Brazilians are slumped in their various chairs -- Weverton. You can

:36:31.:36:43.

probably hear the German supporters. Since they fell behind, Germany,

:36:44.:36:48.

they have not got swept away by the incredible noise in the stadium.

:36:49.:36:52.

They have not sunk in their belief that there was a way back into this

:36:53.:36:57.

and they have merited their equaliser. They continue to pass an

:36:58.:37:02.

probe. Brazil have aided them in some respects. They have dropped

:37:03.:37:06.

deep, and allow the pressure to come upon them. But they have had the

:37:07.:37:12.

chances, Germany, in the game. We talked about hitting the upright of

:37:13.:37:17.

the goal on some occasions, Weverton has been called to make a few good

:37:18.:37:22.

saves. It has been coming, excellent finish as well from Max Meyer. Sven

:37:23.:37:32.

Bender, he was clean, but Neymar caught him. -- Lars Bender. I am not

:37:33.:37:42.

sure if it is after the challenge goes in by Neymar. He may have

:37:43.:37:50.

fallen awkwardly there. The emotions have changed dramatically. There was

:37:51.:37:53.

a carnival atmosphere in the Maracana, Mexican waves breaking

:37:54.:37:58.

out, cheering, singing, joy of unbridled... But the character of

:37:59.:38:06.

this Germany side and the quality of that has been apparent ever since

:38:07.:38:12.

they fell behind. We said we had a game on. We certainly have got. We

:38:13.:38:18.

have had an excellent game, the first 60 minutes has been

:38:19.:38:20.

outstanding. Brazil started very well. We spoke about Gabriel

:38:21.:38:29.

Barbosa, Luan, Neymar da Silva Santos Junior... His knee goes

:38:30.:38:37.

underneath him a little bit. They have got to try to get those players

:38:38.:38:42.

into the game more. They are so dynamic will stop great movement,

:38:43.:38:46.

great pace, they were causing Germany problems. They had such a

:38:47.:38:55.

procession of opportunities in the semifinal against Honduras. We were

:38:56.:39:01.

able to see their full repertoire. Germany have defended brilliantly

:39:02.:39:04.

and I do not just mean that four defenders, I mean those in front as

:39:05.:39:12.

well. A great effort from range, Augusto has spent much of his time

:39:13.:39:16.

tidying up the back, but when released he is not a bad player

:39:17.:39:21.

either. He has been the best player for Brazil, breaking up play when

:39:22.:39:27.

Germany have been attacking. He does have the ability to pick out a pass

:39:28.:39:30.

when he gets into advanced positions. An excellent strike.

:39:31.:39:37.

Germany have had double the amount of the Thames on the Brazilian goal

:39:38.:39:41.

than the Brazilians have had on the German goal. -- of the attempts. The

:39:42.:39:51.

statistics bear out what your gut feeling was about this match. Cannot

:39:52.:39:58.

remember too many attempts for Brazil, it took just one moment of

:39:59.:40:04.

genius from a free kick for Neymar. Perhaps just one volley that Luan

:40:05.:40:10.

hit straighter but I cannot think of another one. That was the only

:40:11.:40:13.

chance they have created from open play. Luan, Gabriel Barbosa. The man

:40:14.:40:24.

again. Half an hour ago, you could not hear

:40:25.:40:46.

yourself think now you can hear some of the shouts from the players on

:40:47.:40:52.

the pitch. Anxiety has taken over. With that anxiety on the pitch, they

:40:53.:40:58.

have forced the patched -- Brazil are trying to force the passes.

:40:59.:41:03.

Whereas the Germans, much more on an even keel, much more precision with

:41:04.:41:11.

their passing. That is why they are getting the joy, Germany. Renato

:41:12.:41:26.

Augusto tries to provide it! Apologies, it was Gabriel Jesus. I

:41:27.:41:34.

think it is a goal kick. A super run from Renato Augusto. A brilliant run

:41:35.:41:39.

from Gabriel Jesus, wonderful defending from Toljan, the man who

:41:40.:41:44.

set up the German goal. It certainly should have been a corner. Lars

:41:45.:41:53.

Bender is still struggling. That is an emotion of someone who knows he

:41:54.:41:58.

will have to give in to the injury. It is a bad one, he knows. He is

:41:59.:42:06.

distraught, absolutely distraught. If you were not aware how much this

:42:07.:42:09.

match means to the players out there, the fact that Lars Bender is

:42:10.:42:15.

practically in tears that he will have to come off the field, tells

:42:16.:42:20.

how much he feels that he is going to miss out on something special.

:42:21.:42:29.

Both Lars Bender and Sven Bender have had serious injuries in their

:42:30.:42:33.

career. You hope it is not that serious. Lars Bender has a wealth of

:42:34.:42:46.

Champions League experience. This is a huge occasion in his career, with

:42:47.:42:53.

that gesture to the sideline, a change is imminent. He has got to

:42:54.:42:57.

come off. Signalling again to the touchline. He tried to give Germany

:42:58.:43:06.

the lead. Shot his block early. But through ball is good and the flag

:43:07.:43:11.

stays down and here is Gabriel Barbosa trying to work an opening,

:43:12.:43:16.

but excellent defending. They thought he was offside there, he is

:43:17.:43:19.

looking to be assistant on the near side. They have to get Lars Bender

:43:20.:43:27.

off now. Neymar skipping away him centrally. The change is imminent.

:43:28.:43:42.

It is Promel coming on. 21 years old. It is the fourth time he has

:43:43.:43:55.

come on as a substitute and he is very much like for like replacement

:43:56.:44:00.

for the bitterly disappointed and tearful Lars Bender. Coaching the

:44:01.:44:11.

midpoint of the second half, it is 1-1. A match that has been

:44:12.:44:17.

everything, that all the pre-match hype was promising it would be. Two

:44:18.:44:27.

very evenly matched sides. Plenty to admire from both. And we are locked

:44:28.:44:32.

at one all. Still in play despite Brandt's best

:44:33.:44:54.

efforts. This was the moment. He knew he was off-site, Gabriel

:44:55.:44:57.

Barbosa, this is why he was looking at the assistant. Germany again.

:44:58.:45:06.

Flicked away by Walace. Barbosa gives chase but Timo Horn is safely

:45:07.:45:07.

out of his goal. In it goes to Neymar. That was a

:45:08.:45:33.

flying challenge. Brazil have taken the free kick to hurriedly, they

:45:34.:45:37.

weren't really set for that. Here come Germany.

:45:38.:45:47.

Guilty a few times, Brazil, of playing the occasion, not the

:45:48.:45:52.

football match. Here is Brandt again. Now Jeremy Toljan goes for

:45:53.:46:01.

glory. And drags it wide. He had better options, didn't he, Toljan.

:46:02.:46:06.

Good movement from Brandt, moving all the way from the right-hand

:46:07.:46:11.

side. This is the goal again. Toljan with an excellent pull-back to pick

:46:12.:46:15.

out Max Meyer. It was the controlled finish as well, allowing the ball to

:46:16.:46:22.

come across, it the floor. He knows full well he is placing it away from

:46:23.:46:34.

Weverton. He's taken off Barbosa and brings an Anderson. They play

:46:35.:46:39.

Manchester United attempted to sign for big money a couple of transfer

:46:40.:46:45.

windows ago. He only makes the bench today, such is the depth of quality

:46:46.:46:54.

in this Brazilian side. Here is Luan, it goes towards Anderson, who

:46:55.:46:58.

plays most of his club football wide on the right-hand side, where gone

:46:59.:47:05.

now. So often they got into this position, Brazil, particularly after

:47:06.:47:09.

getting the goal. All of the moves have broken down, Germany have

:47:10.:47:22.

nullified any threat from Brazil. Walace, now Douglas Santos. Al

:47:23.:47:25.

Cristo. -- they win a corner. It's significant

:47:26.:47:44.

how often Renato Augusto is the pivot. He's had an excellent game.

:47:45.:47:48.

He senses when they have been under the cosh and attacks have been

:47:49.:47:53.

breaking down in the final third, he is deciding to step in a little bit

:47:54.:47:57.

more, try to be more creative himself. By and large he has been

:47:58.:48:00.

used as the holding midfielder who has broken up play and said the

:48:01.:48:09.

attacks going forward. First Renato Augusto, now Neymar, tries to get

:48:10.:48:15.

the Maracana buzzing once more. Off the head for another corner. Neymar

:48:16.:48:30.

will deliver again. My Kenya squad a small touch on it.

:48:31.:48:38.

Luan couldn't control it. Away by Toljan. Douglas Costa, that's neat

:48:39.:48:52.

and tidy. Neymar... On it goes. Could that have been an miss timed

:48:53.:48:57.

challenge in the box? The appeals weren't as vehement as perhaps we

:48:58.:49:12.

thought they might have been. On the overlap from Augusto's challenge. He

:49:13.:49:21.

bounced up immediately, didn't he, Nicholas Sule. Good first touch from

:49:22.:49:37.

Luan. It is Sule, good decision from the referee, who was in a really

:49:38.:49:44.

good position. He could easily have been fooled by that. Dare I say it,

:49:45.:49:52.

even Neymar surely can't think about shooting from here, can he? Tell you

:49:53.:49:58.

what, if this goes in, it's worthy of winning any match on any day.

:49:59.:50:05.

Whatever's at stake. Neymar sensibly flicks it in and the header is bad

:50:06.:50:12.

but Timo Horn stretches out. I didn't think Neymar could strike it

:50:13.:50:15.

from there. You couldn't put it past him. Superb opener from him. I think

:50:16.:50:20.

he knew he was out of range. A little stand up to the far post.

:50:21.:50:26.

Excellent run. Trying to get his header across goal but it was too

:50:27.:50:32.

much height. A little bit easy for Timo Horn to deal with. Much better

:50:33.:50:36.

from Brazil the last five minutes. Coming back into the game.

:50:37.:50:44.

This is Germany, reacting superbly to going one behind. Brazil have

:50:45.:50:49.

reacted superbly to Germany getting the equaliser. Sule bringing it

:50:50.:50:59.

forward for Germany. It's a decent ball in towards the run of Max

:51:00.:51:04.

Meyer. Luan can't control it. Sven Bender.

:51:05.:51:22.

Germany trying to make another change. Nils Petersen is warmed up

:51:23.:51:26.

and ready. The Brazilian supporters whistling

:51:27.:51:47.

every time Germany are on the ball, cheering when their team wins it

:51:48.:51:53.

back. It's an awkward one but well dealt with by Timo Horn. He's got so

:51:54.:51:58.

much pace, Gabriel Jesus, when he gets in full flight he is very

:51:59.:52:03.

difficult to stop. It was he that committed the foul. This will give

:52:04.:52:11.

the opportunity for the German manager to bring an Nils Petersen.

:52:12.:52:20.

Maybe Selke is the man coming off and it's like for like change. In

:52:21.:52:24.

the last game, the semifinal against Nigeria, he went with two up top and

:52:25.:52:29.

the two of them combined for the decisive second goal. This time it

:52:30.:52:33.

is a like-for-like alteration. Excellent finisher, as we saw in the

:52:34.:52:40.

semi, he was floating around the far post waiting for an opportunity. He

:52:41.:52:43.

didn't get too many but he finished it so well. Gabriel Jesus might have

:52:44.:52:50.

committed the foul but he is the one who has stayed on the Texans. Now

:52:51.:52:55.

requiring treatment. He was struggling prior to that. I hope

:52:56.:53:02.

it's only a bit of cramp from his point of view. There was contact,

:53:03.:53:10.

though. That's Manchester city's ?27 million man, Gabriel Jesus. This was

:53:11.:53:21.

Neymar threading it through for Luan before. You can see Sule pulling

:53:22.:53:26.

away the challenge. Luan going down. Good awareness from Sule, when he

:53:27.:53:33.

goes to ground he knows that any contact with Luan committees going

:53:34.:53:38.

over. I think he knew, himself, the referee was in a good position.

:53:39.:53:42.

Immediately bounced back up. Good refereeing. Now then, on the

:53:43.:53:48.

counter. Here is Neymar, look at that bursting run through for

:53:49.:53:53.

Anderson. Good tackle. Cost and in the nick of time. Did he wait too

:53:54.:54:00.

long? Yes, you did. Brilliant recovery run from Klosterman but

:54:01.:54:06.

that is where Germany get caught out, when they sense the fullbacks

:54:07.:54:11.

forward. Neymar goes for gold. A couple of feet beyond. I think he's

:54:12.:54:17.

got a corner. Set himself brilliantly, Neymar. The turn on

:54:18.:54:34.

Bender. Brilliant pace from Anderson, what a recovery run that

:54:35.:54:41.

is. Excellent from Klosterman. He claimed a corner, Neymar, it was a

:54:42.:54:45.

goal kick. Germany have made a real hash kick of getting it out from the

:54:46.:54:50.

back. Here's Neymar again. You asked if Neymar took too long he should

:54:51.:54:53.

have continued with the momentum going forward, took the strike on.

:54:54.:54:57.

Just by delaying that strike it allowed Klosterman to get back. Full

:54:58.:55:01.

credit to him, we've seen when defenders get in those positions

:55:02.:55:05.

they don't have the awareness to TrackBack with that sort of pace.

:55:06.:55:09.

Great defending from Klosterman but I think it was a really good chance

:55:10.:55:13.

for Anderson to take the strike an early. Philip Anderson, one of the

:55:14.:55:19.

senior members of the squad as well. -- Felipe Anderson. Straight down

:55:20.:55:29.

the throat of Timo Horn. Starting to fashionable one or two openings,

:55:30.:55:32.

Brazil. They are coming right back into the game, Brazil, never quite

:55:33.:55:37.

set. Difficult to strike with any power. Half chance... It's bubbling

:55:38.:55:45.

up nicely for a dramatic crescendo, this game. It's been a brilliant

:55:46.:55:54.

gold medal match, it really has. In 11 minutes plus added time to go.

:55:55.:56:01.

Extra time and penalties could be looming, but not if Brazil have it

:56:02.:56:06.

their way. Gabriel Jesus never got the connection he was after. He

:56:07.:56:11.

didn't, great awareness, brilliant touch from Felipe Anderson. Jesus

:56:12.:56:19.

just didn't get hold of it, did he? Perhaps just rushed the striker a

:56:20.:56:20.

little bit. Gabriel Jesus and Grischa Promel in

:56:21.:56:40.

a tussle. For that he gets a yellow card. Looks like it might break for

:56:41.:56:51.

Peterson for a moment. Toljan has been turned. The referee waves play

:56:52.:56:57.

on. Here's Luan. Gabriel Jesus in a heap again but play goes on and

:56:58.:57:01.

Neymar can't get it out from under his feet. Tries to bring in Felipe

:57:02.:57:06.

Anderson. It does reach Felipe Anderson, Neymar on the far side

:57:07.:57:10.

can't reach it, Luan keeps it alive. Klosterman. He took too long and

:57:11.:57:15.

Felipe Anderson almost stole in. Brazil coming to life, excellent

:57:16.:57:20.

play from Luan. Couldn't get the ball out of his feet, Neymar, to get

:57:21.:57:27.

the strike away. Good awareness. Felipe Anderson, lovely little stand

:57:28.:57:31.

up ball to the far post. Klosterman a little bit slow to react to that.

:57:32.:57:39.

They can send it, the Brazilian supporters inside the Maracana. --

:57:40.:57:47.

they can sense it. After a period in which they were second best and not

:57:48.:57:51.

fashioning chances, they are now creating them aren't looking fitter

:57:52.:57:54.

and stronger of the two sets of players. -- and are looking fitter

:57:55.:58:00.

and stronger. Being driven on by the crowd. Walace with the header. Horne

:58:01.:58:07.

gathers it up. They are feeding off the noise and the spirit of those

:58:08.:58:09.

within the stadium. Nils Petersen. Took it down well.

:58:10.:58:20.

Brings in Gnabry. Klosterman. Sule. Listen to the whistling because

:58:21.:58:42.

Germany are in possession of the ball.

:58:43.:58:52.

That's particularly wasteful and not like Germany. Good shape from

:58:53.:59:03.

Brazil. This is the challenge from Bender on Jesus. Another yellow

:59:04.:59:08.

card. We mentioned earlier he has committed a lot of fouls, Sven

:59:09.:59:12.

Bender, tonight. Along with his brother before he went off injured.

:59:13.:59:16.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for him to go in the book. Three German

:59:17.:59:23.

players on yellow cards. Two Brazilians.

:59:24.:59:29.

We're getting ever closer to this match being settled in extra time.

:59:30.:59:33.

Maybe even from the penalty spot. Gabriel Jesus is pointing to a cut

:59:34.:59:47.

on his forearm and saying that he was fouled.

:59:48.:59:54.

It really has had everything, it has been competitive, dramatic, noisy.

:59:55.:00:03.

There have been periods for Germany have been in control and you can

:00:04.:00:08.

almost hear the screams and worry among the Brazilian supporters and

:00:09.:00:12.

periods when Brazil have been in command and the noise has been

:00:13.:00:17.

deafening. It has had all the air and flow of an Olympic gold medal

:00:18.:00:24.

match and it looks as though we are going to get an extra half an hour

:00:25.:00:29.

of it. It has been a superb game. Brazil in the first 20 or 25 minutes

:00:30.:00:35.

were excellent but Germany have come right back into the game. Just over

:00:36.:00:49.

six minutes to go. And the Maracana cramped capacity. Millions around

:00:50.:00:52.

Brazil glued to their television sets. Hoping above any other gold

:00:53.:01:00.

medal that their country has won, that their football team can prise

:01:01.:01:11.

one from the hands of Germany. The side who knocked them out of the

:01:12.:01:17.

World Cup two years ago, a World Cup Brazil were expected and wanted to

:01:18.:01:24.

win more than perhaps any of the five previous ones they participated

:01:25.:01:25.

in and won. There is 21-macro. Now Neymar, a

:01:26.:01:44.

good ball, time for Zeca to pick someone out, but Matthaus got to

:01:45.:01:57.

with an outstanding tackle -- Douglas Santos. Three German players

:01:58.:02:00.

advancing, they have worked it well, here is Petersen and now Meyer drags

:02:01.:02:10.

it. Really good run centrally. Excellent movement from Petersen. He

:02:11.:02:16.

did not quite fancy hitting the cross with his left foot, good

:02:17.:02:24.

breakaway for Germany. You can almost hear several thousand screams

:02:25.:02:30.

there as Meyer hit the shot. Never quite set himself. That is the

:02:31.:02:34.

threat that they do carry, Brazil have continuously sent more and more

:02:35.:02:40.

bodies forward, but they do leave themselves exposed. There was a

:02:41.:02:46.

chance, could Petersen have crossed it for Promel? Did well to get it

:02:47.:02:51.

back to Max Meyer, always stretching, could not quite get the

:02:52.:02:57.

shot on target. They should be OK to continue. Look at the concern on the

:02:58.:03:05.

faces of the Brazilian fans and the joy on the face of the German fan

:03:06.:03:07.

next to him. On the penultimate day of these

:03:08.:03:25.

wonderful Olympic Games, and occasion that the fits the

:03:26.:03:30.

significance of the gold medal match. 80,000 in the Maracana, the

:03:31.:03:41.

two most successful footballing nations on earth competing, albeit

:03:42.:03:46.

at the under 23 level. And although they have one macro every other

:03:47.:03:51.

major honour in the game, neither can boast a gold medal -- won. It

:03:52.:03:57.

looks as though we are heading towards extra time to settle it.

:03:58.:04:05.

Neymar, blocked off by Promel. There was a late challenge, the referee

:04:06.:04:09.

allows it to go because Germany are still in possession. Out came

:04:10.:04:16.

Weverton. Good goalkeeping from Weverton. Hearts in mouth stuff for

:04:17.:04:26.

Brazil there. Weverton was alert to danger. Sven Bender. Sule.

:04:27.:04:43.

Marquinhos and now 20 Micheal Martin. -- Lukas Klostermann and now

:04:44.:05:02.

Gnabry. Brazilian supporters cannot look when they get to the edge of

:05:03.:05:07.

the penalty area. Here they come to the edge of the penalty area now.

:05:08.:05:17.

Thumped away by Zeca. That is a free kick in the centre circle and

:05:18.:05:24.

another yellow card is on its way. Gabriel Jesus has been in the wars

:05:25.:05:30.

in the second half, but he keeps riding it out, this time it is Sule

:05:31.:05:37.

in the notebook. Gabriel Jesus is very brave. He is always prepared to

:05:38.:05:43.

go in for the challenges. He has had a rough path, a lot of challenges,

:05:44.:05:47.

but he is still prepared to get up and run with the ball. It is a

:05:48.:05:52.

breakaway there and I think that Sule knew that. Brazil have made one

:05:53.:06:05.

change so far, Germany have made two, one of them forced after Lars

:06:06.:06:15.

Bender picked up an injury. Here is Felipe Anderson, the only Brazilian

:06:16.:06:19.

substitute on the field, his cross was a teaser. Walace Souza Silva

:06:20.:06:33.

headset. It has taking something special from that range. You have

:06:34.:06:38.

got Zeca getting forward, continued the flow of the attack. 79-macro

:06:39.:06:46.

decided to go for glory, poor strike. -- Walace Souza Silva. We

:06:47.:06:51.

are approaching stoppage time, at the end of 90 pulsating minutes in

:06:52.:07:00.

the Maracana. Here is Felipe Anderson. And now Neymar. And you

:07:01.:07:08.

can see what he was thinking, but he is not going to get to that, it is

:07:09.:07:15.

Luan. Three minutes of added time, is there to be the ultimate twist in

:07:16.:07:20.

the tail or will it be 30 extra minutes for a group of tiring

:07:21.:07:29.

players? It is normally in these later stages of the game with those

:07:30.:07:33.

tired legs that you get the mistakes that do lead to goals. I am sure

:07:34.:07:38.

there will be more chances in this game as we do progress, if we do get

:07:39.:07:43.

extra time and it will be largely down to the tired legs on the pitch.

:07:44.:07:50.

It is not as hot as some days have been in Rio. It is still in the low

:07:51.:08:03.

20s. Sticky and despite the drizzle, it is energy sapping. These players

:08:04.:08:14.

are going to have to dig deep and we know there is going to be another

:08:15.:08:18.

half and hour of action before this game is settled, it seems. It looks

:08:19.:08:27.

as though Germany are quite happy to take it to extra time now. A good

:08:28.:08:38.

run for 75 by pro, you have to say, but he dealt with it with great

:08:39.:08:51.

dexterity -- Timo Horn. So often you see goalkeepers in that position,

:08:52.:08:56.

come out and panic. The duo he was under pressure, but calmly played it

:08:57.:09:07.

out. I think it was Sule in the end. Into the final minute of added time

:09:08.:09:13.

at the end of the gold medal match at the Maracana. Brazil went ahead

:09:14.:09:17.

with a goal from Neymar, cancelled out with a gold from Max Meyer. Here

:09:18.:09:25.

is Felipe Anderson. Now Neymar, deflection, corner, it is their --

:09:26.:09:31.

is there to be one last chance? Again he decided to take the strike

:09:32.:09:36.

on, Neymar. Very difficult strike to take, so many boys in front of him.

:09:37.:09:41.

I think it was Douglas Santos who made a great run. I think he should

:09:42.:09:48.

have picked him out. Neymar drives it in, easily by Petersen, to a

:09:49.:09:54.

chorus of groans from thousands in the Maracana. And the referee brings

:09:55.:10:02.

the 90 minutes to its conclusion. We are to have extra time, Brazil

:10:03.:10:07.

leading at half-time through a Neymar free kick special, Germany

:10:08.:10:11.

merited an equaliser and it was no surprise when it came, the German

:10:12.:10:16.

captain, Max Meyer, providing it, and it will be extra time that

:10:17.:10:21.

settles or perhaps even penalties, the gold medal match. It is

:10:22.:10:26.

obviously a very nervous Maracana, and very nervous, but cabana behind

:10:27.:10:30.

me as well, very quiet, not many people around, they are cramming

:10:31.:10:35.

into the bars and restaurants to watch the game. They yearn for this

:10:36.:10:40.

Olympic gold medal in the men's football. Whilst they get themselves

:10:41.:10:45.

ready for extra time, we are going to hear from Tom Daley. Yesterday he

:10:46.:10:51.

had a great heat in the diving as he finished first in the 10m platform,

:10:52.:10:56.

to go into the semi-finals, however today it all went run as in those

:10:57.:11:02.

semi-finals he finished 18 out of 18. He was upset afterwards

:11:03.:11:05.

understandably as he spoke to Helen Skelton. We can see what it means to

:11:06.:11:15.

you. What happened? I have worked so hard these past four years to get to

:11:16.:11:21.

this point. Yesterday, I got an Olympic record, the highest scorer

:11:22.:11:24.

in an Olympic Games and today it was not there to be and that is what

:11:25.:11:30.

diving does sometimes. I truly am heartbroken. I feel like I am in

:11:31.:11:34.

peak physical condition and I could really go out there and could have

:11:35.:11:38.

won tonight. It is really hard to accept how it went today. Your

:11:39.:11:42.

team-mates would argue that this is the most stressful sport, the most

:11:43.:11:49.

high pressure and add to that, your profile and the expectation, what is

:11:50.:11:52.

going through your head when you're on that board? I am completely

:11:53.:11:54.

present in the moment, enjoying each moment as I get to do it. Today,

:11:55.:11:59.

things were not clicking. I was given it my all and I was so up for

:12:00.:12:04.

it, training beforehand was good, in the competition it fell apart. Those

:12:05.:12:08.

other guys today did absolutely amazing and I am so happy with the

:12:09.:12:13.

way that the whole of Team GB have done. I am so proud to be part of

:12:14.:12:17.

the team and how everyone else has done so amazingly well. I just

:12:18.:12:23.

wanted to be able to stand on top of the podium and replicate something

:12:24.:12:26.

last night. It was not meant to be. Another four years of hard work to

:12:27.:12:32.

come. It did not feel any different, I felt good in myself. I guess my

:12:33.:12:38.

mind and body were not connecting. I knew that I had a shot at the last

:12:39.:12:44.

I'd still if I really went after it. I needed 102, basically 9.5 and

:12:45.:12:50.

tense and I give it by all but it did not happen. It did happen last

:12:51.:12:55.

week. You have got yourself one bronze medal. It is not a right of.

:12:56.:13:02.

Pretty successful. I am really happy. After 2012, I came away with

:13:03.:13:06.

a bronze medal and so far here, we got our bronze medal in the

:13:07.:13:12.

synchronised diving. I wanted to get that Olympic gold medal. The result

:13:13.:13:20.

was another four years. Tokyo is definitely on your sites?

:13:21.:13:25.

Definitely. Even more than ever now. You have done so much for the sport

:13:26.:13:29.

and you have an Army of fans, I can see why you are upset, but do not be

:13:30.:13:35.

too hard on yourself. It is heartbreaking. It is the Olympic

:13:36.:13:39.

Games, those five rings on the wall mean so much to me, to be not in the

:13:40.:13:45.

final, to get the shot to go for the medal, it is heartbreaking. It is a

:13:46.:13:52.

good story for Tokyo. You know films, it gives us a better

:13:53.:13:56.

narrative. Exactly. I will give it my best shot and work even harder

:13:57.:14:02.

than ever before. And my list of athletes I want to hug at these

:14:03.:14:14.

Olympics get longer. The winner was Aisen Chen who won by over 15

:14:15.:14:20.

points. The Mexican took the silver medal and the American took the

:14:21.:14:21.

bronze medal. They are still getting ready in the

:14:22.:14:42.

Maracana for extra time. We're going to bring that to you live. And then

:14:43.:14:46.

later we'll all be watching this man.

:14:47.:14:57.

# You can run on for a long time, run on for a long time

:14:58.:15:04.

# Run-on for a long time, sooner or later going to cut you down

:15:05.:15:10.

# Sooner or later got to cut you down

:15:11.:15:15.

# Go tell that long tongue liar, go tell that midnight Rider

:15:16.:15:21.

# Tell them that God's going to cut them down

:15:22.:15:31.

#. Mo Farah goes for the double double in the men's 5000 metres at

:15:32.:15:38.

1:30am. They are ready to go in the Maracana. Brazil want this to be a

:15:39.:15:42.

very positive 30 minutes they can get their hands on Olympic gold.

:15:43.:15:47.

Alistair mine and Kevin Kilbarchan commentate.

:15:48.:15:52.

COMMENTATOR: These met in the semifinal stage and Brazil won on

:15:53.:16:00.

penalties before they went on to lose the gold medal match. Kevin

:16:01.:16:08.

alongside me. What is your gut feeling about this one? Such a

:16:09.:16:14.

difficult one to call. I'd go with Brazil simply because the home crowd

:16:15.:16:19.

that is with them, the momentum has been with them towards the end of

:16:20.:16:22.

the game. If they can take that through to extra time, of course,

:16:23.:16:27.

with the quality of Neymar and the like in the Brazilian side going

:16:28.:16:31.

forward, they might have enough. They could put this to bed in extra

:16:32.:16:40.

time. It's been such an even contest, you just hope it'll be a

:16:41.:16:45.

moment of genuine inspiration, as opposed to a moment to forget for

:16:46.:16:51.

one of these players. Renato Augusto is fouled. He's certainly been my

:16:52.:16:55.

man of the match, I think Kevin's as well. Yeah, superb performance from

:16:56.:17:02.

him. He's had to play a lot of the game, particularly normal time, on

:17:03.:17:07.

the back foot a little bit, stopping the German attack when they got into

:17:08.:17:10.

the final third. He's always been prepared to step in when his won the

:17:11.:17:14.

ball and start the Brazilian attack going forward. The Brazilian coach

:17:15.:17:23.

Rogerio Micale has two substitutions available to him. Horst Hrubesch the

:17:24.:17:29.

German coach only one, that could still be a factor. The Flacco stay

:17:30.:17:35.

down, here's Gabriel Jesus. The noise around the Maracana. Can't get

:17:36.:17:42.

it beyond Sule, who is fouled by Jesus. That was an opening. Great

:17:43.:17:46.

first touch from Jesus as well, excellent ball from Douglas Santos

:17:47.:17:52.

to spot the opportunity there. Good Jesus have gone on to his left foot?

:17:53.:17:56.

He's wanting to come he's tried to do it, it's good defending from Sule

:17:57.:18:01.

to stop the flow of that attack. A good chance, though, for Brazil. We

:18:02.:18:10.

could hear the cries of hope, the willing of everybody in the stadium,

:18:11.:18:14.

that Gabriel Jesus might put that in the back of the net. Thank goodness,

:18:15.:18:20.

if this does go to a penalty shoot out, you can only imagine the

:18:21.:18:25.

emotions around the stadium. Only three minutes into extra time at the

:18:26.:18:31.

moment. Brazil 1-1 Germany, neither country having won a gold medal

:18:32.:18:37.

before. Five World Cups won by Brazil. Four by Germany. Eight

:18:38.:18:41.

finals for Germany, making them the most successful team apart from

:18:42.:18:44.

Brazil in the Fifa World Cup at senior level. Three silvers for

:18:45.:18:50.

Brazil is the best they've ever managed. Two bronze for Germany, the

:18:51.:18:59.

best they've ever managed. It's been a wonderful contest, this. Had a

:19:00.:19:03.

case for a foul there, Nils Petersen, but the wrong side of

:19:04.:19:09.

Marquinhos. I don't think the referee wanted to give a penalty

:19:10.:19:13.

against Brazil at such a stage of the match.

:19:14.:19:18.

They have to do something out of the ordinary for him to give a penalty

:19:19.:19:26.

in this atmosphere. I think there was slight contact, Petersen did go

:19:27.:19:32.

over very easily. Once he got on the wrong side of Marquinhos, he's in

:19:33.:19:35.

trouble then, the Brazilian defender. Roderigo Caio. Well

:19:36.:19:46.

defended once again by Klosterman. Max Meyer. He took his goal

:19:47.:19:50.

brilliantly, the first goal Brazil have conceded in the entire

:19:51.:19:53.

tournament, when he levelled account. Ginter. You can see Brazil

:19:54.:20:07.

are about to make a second change. A foul. Gabriel Jesus, who is

:20:08.:20:17.

noticeably hobbling. That was high, fat, from Jesus. I think he's

:20:18.:20:24.

injured himself in the process. He's taken a number of hefty blows,

:20:25.:20:29.

Gabriel Jesus. It's not a surprise to see it is he who is having to

:20:30.:20:34.

make way. Can't fault his effort from his commitment. He's only 19

:20:35.:20:40.

years old. Manchester city have bought themselves a player there. I

:20:41.:20:45.

think he'll go on to be an excellent signing for Manchester city. His

:20:46.:20:50.

tiredness has caught up with him. Rafinha has come on in his stead.

:20:51.:21:06.

Driven away by Brazil in a dangerous area. Meyer on towards Brandt. Good

:21:07.:21:32.

interception by Douglas Costa, the pad is excellent. Luan onside.

:21:33.:21:37.

Neymar looking to join in. Still with Luan, but there were two maybe

:21:38.:21:45.

three Germany defenders in the way. Toljan I think it was that made the

:21:46.:21:49.

block. They've been caught out a few times, Germany, we spoke about

:21:50.:21:53.

Brazil being vulnerable to the counterattack, that time Germany

:21:54.:21:58.

sending bodies forward too early. Could Luan have picked out Neymar

:21:59.:22:03.

once he checked inside? Good chance for Brazil. Here's Douglas Santos.

:22:04.:22:11.

Now Neymar. Tries to threaded through. To Felipe Anderson. Can't

:22:12.:22:29.

quite manage it. Caio. Now Augusto. Rafinha. Germany come forward with

:22:30.:22:40.

Petersen. Brandt on the far side is the intended target. Brandt! That

:22:41.:22:44.

would have been magnificent. A heartbreaker perhaps for Brazil, but

:22:45.:22:48.

a moment of genuine quality. It's superb from Max Meyer initially.

:22:49.:22:52.

Once the diagonal ball comes in he never really trusted himself on his

:22:53.:22:56.

left foot, he wanted to take the strike with his right. This is the

:22:57.:23:03.

chance for Luan. Excellent forward ball, positive pass, as soon as he

:23:04.:23:06.

comes in here, could he pick out Neymar, could he have passed it to

:23:07.:23:10.

Neymar, in a better position? I think he should. Glorious chance for

:23:11.:23:12.

Brazil. The chances are coming. The legs are

:23:13.:23:22.

noticeably wilting on a number of the players. Fatigue, both mental

:23:23.:23:32.

and physical, playing its part now. Renato Augusto. Trying to change the

:23:33.:23:35.

angle of the play, headed away by Klosterman. Here's Gnabry. He's

:23:36.:23:40.

dispossessed by Marquinhos. A second time the substitute is

:23:41.:23:55.

involved. the tempo of this game is

:23:56.:24:16.

relentless, both sides trying to force the issue, lots of tired legs.

:24:17.:24:20.

It could be a mistake, a vital mistake, that could cost the team in

:24:21.:24:24.

this match. Got to keep your concentration in these late stages.

:24:25.:24:32.

The nervousness around the Maracana is palpable. You can only imagine

:24:33.:24:48.

them up and down this enormous country, people crammed into their

:24:49.:24:53.

living rooms, in bars, on the beach as well, I'm sure. Just hoping and

:24:54.:25:01.

praying their side can win the gold medal that the whole country wants

:25:02.:25:04.

more than any other. The football gold medal.

:25:05.:25:20.

Patients from Germany. Away by Timo Horn. Looking towards Petersen.

:25:21.:25:28.

Caio. Beginning to raise the noise levels

:25:29.:25:46.

now, the Brazilian supporters. Helped on by Douglas Santos. Here's

:25:47.:25:55.

Rafinha. Douglas Santos again. Neymar, good tackle.

:25:56.:26:12.

Taking on Brandt, getting the better of him, manages to find Rafinha, who

:26:13.:26:18.

I'm sure wasn't the intended recipient of the ball. Germany again

:26:19.:26:28.

set up perfectly despite us being in the 101st minute of the game. They

:26:29.:26:33.

are unable to get bodies forward in support in the attack. Rafinha

:26:34.:26:37.

looking to get the cross away. Only one player who can hit centrally.

:26:38.:26:42.

Most of the Brazilian players are circulating around the edge of the

:26:43.:26:49.

penalty area. It is, without doubt, one of the most iconic football

:26:50.:26:57.

grounds in the world. Famous throughout the footballing world.

:26:58.:27:05.

The Maracana. The home of the World Cup final two years ago, where

:27:06.:27:12.

Germany lifted a World Cup that was supposed be won by the hosts,

:27:13.:27:21.

Brazil, but wasn't. It has all accentuated the significance of why

:27:22.:27:24.

this gold-medal match has been watched by everyone right across the

:27:25.:27:36.

country. Less than four minutes to go of the first period of extra

:27:37.:27:44.

time. Brazil 1-1 Germany. Here's Walace. Good ball. Picked off by

:27:45.:27:51.

Sule. The Brazilian supporters, those who can bear to watch through

:27:52.:27:55.

their fingers, trying to raise the noise levels, trying to transmit

:27:56.:28:02.

some of their hopes and dreams to the players out there, who are

:28:03.:28:07.

ostensibly under 23 years of age. There won't be many players within

:28:08.:28:11.

these two sides that will have played in many better atmospheres

:28:12.:28:15.

than this, superb atmosphere, they have to draw from that. Certainly

:28:16.:28:18.

the Brazilian players themselves have to draw off the crowd, try to

:28:19.:28:26.

push themselves on. The coaches doing what they can to inspire. One

:28:27.:28:31.

change each still available to both. Douglas Santos, 22 years old. Plays

:28:32.:29:01.

it to Caio, 23 years old, of Sao Paulo. To the 22-year-old from

:29:02.:29:09.

Santos. Youthful players in the biggest match of their lives. That's

:29:10.:29:19.

one out for a goal kick. Walace, aged 21. If you look carefully,

:29:20.:29:27.

there are a few German supporters. Kicked away by Timo Horn. Out for a

:29:28.:29:48.

Brazilian throw. The Brazilians are trying to press for words. But the

:29:49.:29:53.

German defence under pressure. There are still quite content to keep the

:29:54.:29:57.

ball, move the ball slowly across the back four and use the goalkeeper

:29:58.:30:05.

who is very good with his feet. Gnabry, 21 years old. Timo Horn has

:30:06.:30:16.

said when he comes back to the Emirates, he will go out on loan but

:30:17.:30:21.

not before he has signed a contract extension. Who is going to emerge as

:30:22.:30:33.

their hero? Let us hope it is a hero and not a villain. Here is Zeca. The

:30:34.:30:50.

referee brings the first period of extra time to an end, not too many

:30:51.:30:57.

chances, but I guess it would be unfair to expect a level of

:30:58.:31:05.

intensity that has come before it. The tension is still palpable. The

:31:06.:31:10.

teams are locked at 1-1, who is going to win the gold medal match?

:31:11.:31:18.

And we will bring you that second-half of extra time very

:31:19.:31:21.

shortly. They will take on their fluids and then they will get back

:31:22.:31:26.

under way. Still a very quiet and very tense on the beach. Hardly

:31:27.:31:33.

anyone around at all. Anyone who is walking around tends to have an

:31:34.:31:38.

Argentina shirt on and they are not necessarily interested in watching

:31:39.:31:41.

Brazil against Germany. We have a big night of live sport still to

:31:42.:31:47.

come on BBC One. The final night in the Olympic Stadium of the

:31:48.:31:50.

athletics, the highlight from a British point of view, the men's

:31:51.:31:56.

5000 metres at half past one, Mo Farah going for a double 00 already

:31:57.:32:01.

having claimed the men's 10,000 metres and before that, Lynsey Sharp

:32:02.:32:10.

will go in the women's 800 metres final were the favourite will be the

:32:11.:32:13.

South African and everything rounds of which the men's four by 400 m

:32:14.:32:15.

relay which unfortunately will not have Great Britain in since they

:32:16.:32:22.

were disqualified. The tae kwon do bronze matches will be on BBC Four.

:32:23.:32:27.

The ankle first followed by Mahama Cho. Back to the Maracana for the

:32:28.:32:34.

second half of extra time -- Bianca Walkden. You can probably sense the

:32:35.:32:47.

amount of tension, anxiety, nervousness among those watching.

:32:48.:32:56.

You can only imagine the similar emotions doubling under the surface

:32:57.:33:01.

of the players as well. Here is Zeca. Charged down by Klostermann.

:33:02.:33:15.

Helped on by Brandt. Good tackle by Douglas Santos. It has been an

:33:16.:33:26.

incredible pace this match. You think it would have died down a

:33:27.:33:30.

little through that first period of extra time, but if anything it has

:33:31.:33:34.

continued in the same vein. A lovely ball and here is Felipe Anderson.

:33:35.:33:40.

I'd save by Timo Horn! Neymar involved inevitably. Look at that

:33:41.:33:47.

little reverse pass, it is outstanding. Good stop. Excellent

:33:48.:33:52.

stop from Timo Horn. Great awareness from Neymar. It is that movement.

:33:53.:33:58.

This time it is Felipe Anderson and he tries to take the strike with his

:33:59.:34:04.

right foot, instead of perhaps going with his left. Brazil corner and

:34:05.:34:09.

Timo Horn, he gets away with it, brushes it off the top of his

:34:10.:34:16.

fingertips. All that happens at the end of that is that Germany get a

:34:17.:34:22.

throw. He has to stay on his feet there, Marquinhos, he did so well to

:34:23.:34:27.

win the ball back. Looking for a free kick but he was never going to

:34:28.:34:39.

get it. A lot of noise as that pass went through to Felipe Anderson.

:34:40.:34:45.

Throughout Brazil, they hoped that might be the moment that this match

:34:46.:34:48.

was settled in their favour. It was not to be. Stretching a little bit.

:34:49.:34:59.

Would have had a better angle to try and take the strike on his left. He

:35:00.:35:13.

had a really great spell in the middle third of the match, either

:35:14.:35:18.

side of half-time. To the moment they equalise, really, and then

:35:19.:35:21.

after that they have not really fashioned too much. You could say

:35:22.:35:25.

the same for Brazil, until they scored, they were well on top and

:35:26.:35:30.

then Germany came back into it. Since the German equaliser, Brazil

:35:31.:35:35.

have created better chances. Felipe Anderson has been pivotal in that

:35:36.:35:43.

and has won another corner. Blocking and happy in a way to concede the

:35:44.:35:51.

corner. They are doing what they can. To inspire their players on the

:35:52.:36:02.

pitch. Another good header away, this time, Matthias Ginter. That was

:36:03.:36:19.

very pure. Trying to look for the man out wide, Brazil had so many

:36:20.:36:22.

bodies essentially, could he have put the ball into a more central

:36:23.:36:26.

position to try and create an opportunity. The coaches cannot do

:36:27.:36:38.

too much, the fans can do even less. Knocked on by Petersen, away by

:36:39.:36:46.

Marquinhos and it breaks for Brandt. Good tackle by Rafinha. Here is

:36:47.:36:57.

Felipe Anderson. Headed away by Klostermann. Luan. Tries to guide it

:36:58.:37:08.

into words Neymar. Headed away by Sule. Zeca. -- in towards. Brazil

:37:09.:37:21.

are dominant, Germany just trying to repel them, keep their shape, keep

:37:22.:37:27.

their focus. Maybe in their minds, they might have mentally settled for

:37:28.:37:35.

penalties. Here is Douglas Santos, now Felipe Anderson. Neymar,

:37:36.:37:38.

position from which to strike. He got underneath it. You would not put

:37:39.:37:44.

it past him, scoring from that range. Offers himself good first

:37:45.:37:53.

touch, bad execution, he had enough bodies ahead of him, could he have

:37:54.:37:56.

picked out a better path going forward? 28 attempts between the two

:37:57.:38:06.

sides, this tells you what type of game we have had today. Plenty of

:38:07.:38:11.

opportunities, the frame of the goal hit on three occasions, some good

:38:12.:38:16.

goalkeeping by Weverton initially and then Timo Horn, even as recently

:38:17.:38:25.

as extra time. It looks as though it might well be penalties, can you

:38:26.:38:29.

believe it? That will settle this gold medal match. Nine minutes of

:38:30.:38:38.

extra time to go, though. I am not so sure how the Brazilian public

:38:39.:38:41.

will be able to deal with a penalty shoot out here.

:38:42.:38:58.

Listen to the whistling because Germany are in possession of the

:38:59.:39:04.

ball. The Brazilian players then try to close them in and force them to

:39:05.:39:10.

hit it a bit longer. Breaks for Brandt. Good from Toljan. Cave.

:39:11.:39:28.

Gnabry to his left. Here is Gnabry. Tackle and a huge roar to greet that

:39:29.:39:33.

tackle, Neymar does not have the energy and he might well have cramp

:39:34.:39:42.

-- Klostermann. I think that is what it is, the tiredness letting them,

:39:43.:39:48.

he knows he has got too much pace for Sven Bender. There is no energy

:39:49.:39:55.

left in those legs. They are physically drained but more

:39:56.:39:58.

significantly they are emotionally drained as well. Yes. Brazil began

:39:59.:40:07.

the tournament with two goalless draws and as the flag goes up,

:40:08.:40:13.

against Neymar, their volume of criticism and the amount of column

:40:14.:40:17.

inches in the Brazilian newspapers about the fact that they began with

:40:18.:40:21.

two goalless draws, just shows you how much this competition has meant

:40:22.:40:26.

to the Brazilian public and the Brazilian media. They have had

:40:27.:40:32.

success, they have won gold medals in the Olympics, either from their

:40:33.:40:39.

women or men or both, it was the football gold medal but they wanted

:40:40.:40:46.

above any other. And that is why there has been such scrutiny upon

:40:47.:40:53.

those out on the football field. Tired legs. Here is Toljan, it

:40:54.:41:02.

almost broke momentarily, you could hear the screams from many of the

:41:03.:41:10.

Brazilian supporters. Everyone is hopping around now, Sven Bender has

:41:11.:41:17.

cramp in his hamstrings, Neymar has cramp in his calves. They are all

:41:18.:41:27.

gritting their teeth. It is worth remembering that the German

:41:28.:41:30.

Bundesliga season has not even started yet! The Spanish season has

:41:31.:41:38.

only just got underway for Neymar and Rafinha. They have a whole ten

:41:39.:41:43.

months ahead of them, all that is some distance away at the moment,

:41:44.:41:49.

because this is all about winning a prize gold medal. Now then, here is

:41:50.:41:58.

Meyer. Great block from Gnabry. Relief among the Brazilian

:41:59.:42:04.

supporters. Superb challenge from Augusto. He has done so well in this

:42:05.:42:12.

match. The referee's block was greeted as if it was a goal that

:42:13.:42:16.

sells the tournament. It is the first real site that Germany have

:42:17.:42:24.

had in extra time. There are going to make their final change. Max

:42:25.:42:35.

Christiansen comes on. He wants to come on. Sven Bender does not want

:42:36.:42:41.

to come off! He does not want to miss out on the remaining five

:42:42.:42:44.

minutes like his brother had two in normal time through injury. And Max

:42:45.:42:51.

Christiansen stays off the field as Felipe Anderson comes around the

:42:52.:42:55.

back, a brilliant tackle from Toljan. It is a free kick to

:42:56.:43:00.

Germany. You cannot underestimate what a great challenge that was. He

:43:01.:43:04.

knows as well when he goes to ground, he has to win the ball,

:43:05.:43:10.

because any contact with Felipe Anderson, there he is going up, it

:43:11.:43:15.

is a penalty. A tremendously timed challenge from Toljan. Sven Bender

:43:16.:43:24.

would not come off. There he is in the corner of your picture. He does

:43:25.:43:30.

not want to miss out on the remaining few minutes and if

:43:31.:43:34.

necessary, he wants to take the responsibility from the spot. He

:43:35.:43:43.

refused to give way to the severe cramp in his legs. Here is Gnabry.

:43:44.:43:51.

Now Promel. He looks very uncomfortable, Sven

:43:52.:44:05.

Bender, in midfield. You mention that cramp bearer. I think he is

:44:06.:44:15.

just running on a memory at the moment. Trying to occupy some space,

:44:16.:44:20.

will he have enough energy to take a penalty? I am sure he will

:44:21.:44:26.

volunteer. He is made of sterner stuff, Sven Bender.

:44:27.:44:33.

Evidence in front of your very eyes that Germany now think the only way

:44:34.:44:39.

they are going to win this gold-medal is through the penalties.

:44:40.:44:48.

I suppose it's a 50-50 shot, isn't it? The motions on the faces of

:44:49.:44:59.

everyone within the Maracana is probably mirrored throughout the

:45:00.:45:03.

entire country. Neymar... It's blocked, the shot, from Rafinha.

:45:04.:45:12.

Klosterman again getting back. Good challenge again from the German left

:45:13.:45:19.

back. Hands-on heads of Alcantara, nicknamed Rafinha. The corner to

:45:20.:45:28.

Brazil. Luan will swing it in. Renato Augusto will keep it alive.

:45:29.:45:30.

Now with Neymar. Two minute of extra time, that's all

:45:31.:46:00.

that remains. Good turn away by Brandt, it must be outside. It was a

:46:01.:46:11.

great run from Brandt, think he wanted the ball played early,

:46:12.:46:15.

Gnabry, that is why he set off. He knew he was offside. It was just the

:46:16.:46:25.

most brilliant run from Brandt. Hearts back into the mouths of the

:46:26.:46:30.

Brazilian supporters. Felipe Anderson can't get around Gnabry.

:46:31.:46:37.

Away by Klosterman. Excellent ball from Neymar to free up Felipe

:46:38.:46:44.

Anderson. Gnabry tracking back. Putting so much work into night,

:46:45.:46:50.

Gnabry, not necessarily always going forward as well. Renato Augusto,

:46:51.:46:58.

Douglas Santos. It's not a bad ball. Headed away, though. Gathered in by

:46:59.:47:08.

Renato Augusto. Douglas Costa stand it up again. Terrific header away.

:47:09.:47:14.

Brazil ending extra time in German territory. Can they provide a final

:47:15.:47:19.

twist? No, they can't. Timo Horn has it. I'm sure he will take as long as

:47:20.:47:26.

he is possibly permitted. When this ball reaches the Brazilian half, the

:47:27.:47:32.

referee will blow his whistle. He looked at his watch and decided

:47:33.:47:40.

against it. Another look at the watch from the referee. Is there

:47:41.:47:46.

time to fashion one final opening? No, there's not. The Olympic Games

:47:47.:47:55.

is almost coming to its conclusion. And before it does, a penalty shoot

:47:56.:48:02.

out will decide whether the host nation are going to win a gold medal

:48:03.:48:12.

in the Maracana Stadium. Germany and Brazil, the two sides who met in the

:48:13.:48:17.

semifinal of the Fifa World Cup two years ago, when Germany broke

:48:18.:48:20.

Brazilian hearts and humiliated them, knocking them out of their own

:48:21.:48:26.

World Cup. The Brazil redemption. If it's going to come, it's going to be

:48:27.:48:32.

via penalty shoot out. Brazil 1-1 Germany. The drama is palpable. But

:48:33.:48:35.

it's going to extend to a shoot out. There isn't much the coaches can do

:48:36.:48:52.

other than look in the eyes of the players in front of them and decide

:48:53.:48:56.

who looks as though they are mentally attuned to hitting one of

:48:57.:49:01.

these penalties. Surely, Kevin, varies more pressure, more

:49:02.:49:04.

responsibility, not the Brazilians than the Germans. Spot on with that,

:49:05.:49:10.

I've been in this position in a major tournament in a penalty shoot

:49:11.:49:13.

out situation. You know, you've got to believe in yourself, in your

:49:14.:49:17.

technique. As you say, when the manager looks you in the eye you

:49:18.:49:20.

have to stand up to be counted. That's what both managers will be

:49:21.:49:23.

doing with both sets of players. You've just got to believe in

:49:24.:49:27.

yourself when you step up. Everywhere you look there are fizzy

:49:28.:49:32.

owes and medical staff trying to get the cramp out of the legs. I guess

:49:33.:49:37.

after 120 minutes and after a long tournament there's bound to be

:49:38.:49:45.

muscular problems, strains. How can you overcome that to get enough

:49:46.:49:51.

energy to put the ball beyond the goalkeeper? You mentioned with Sven

:49:52.:49:55.

Bender, he was being substituted committee signalled the bed she

:49:56.:49:58.

didn't want to come off, he was suffering badly with cramp. Neymar

:49:59.:50:03.

suffering with cramp. -- signalled to the bench he didn't want to come

:50:04.:50:10.

off. These are vital moments to get yourself prepared physically, try to

:50:11.:50:14.

get a quick massage if you can with the medical team that you have

:50:15.:50:18.

around you. Get yourself prepared. Physically, first and foremost. Then

:50:19.:50:22.

the mental side takes over when you step up to take the penalty. The two

:50:23.:50:28.

captains are the two goal-scorers so far. Neymar setting Brazil alight

:50:29.:50:36.

with a free kick. That was simply exquisite. The equaliser from Max

:50:37.:50:43.

Meyer. A well worked move, tucked away, deservedly so. It's going to

:50:44.:50:54.

be a penalty shoot out. That's going to settle this much anticipated

:50:55.:51:03.

match. Let's hope that whoever it is doesn't blast it over the bar, let's

:51:04.:51:10.

hope it's a magnificent save that brings this penalty shoot out to an

:51:11.:51:15.

end. You'd hate to think it was a dreadfully hit penalty into road 24,

:51:16.:51:18.

wouldn't you? That's what it is, that's what it's coming down to. --

:51:19.:51:25.

somebody has to be the villain in many respects, within this. It's

:51:26.:51:33.

been a great gold-medal match to watch, superb game to watch.

:51:34.:51:43.

Someone's got to lose it. They'll be saying to each other, don't worry.

:51:44.:51:52.
