Over the last two decades,

0:00:070:00:09

Irish dancing has become ever more competitive.

0:00:090:00:12

Winning big on the amateur circuit can often lead to a lucrative

0:00:140:00:18

career in professional dance shows.

0:00:180:00:21

CHEERING

0:00:210:00:25

But to reach the coveted podium places,

0:00:250:00:28

the modern dancer must be in peak physical condition.

0:00:280:00:31

And with stamina now a necessity,

0:00:340:00:36

increasing numbers of dance teachers are seeking external help

0:00:360:00:40

from professionals in the world of sport and fitness.

0:00:400:00:43

Enter Angela Mohan,

0:00:450:00:47

whose skills as a fitness trainer have won her much

0:00:470:00:50

renown in the dancing world.

0:00:500:00:52

Since 2009, her fitness regime

0:00:560:00:58

has helped train three world champions...

0:00:580:01:01

..and helped to place 10 more on the top five podium...

0:01:020:01:05

..results that have others clamouring to join her

0:01:080:01:10

winning team, Angel's Army.

0:01:100:01:13

Irish dancing has become a sport.

0:01:160:01:18

My job is to make sure, when they get up on stage

0:01:180:01:22

that they're ready for it.

0:01:220:01:25

My sister-in-law is a dance teacher and a judge so we sat down

0:01:250:01:28

and she talked to me about what the teacher is looking for.

0:01:280:01:32

And then my job is to work on the conditioning part of the dance.

0:01:320:01:38

Stamina, strength, endurance, mobility.

0:01:380:01:42

And if they start to lose it, everything drops.

0:01:420:01:45

We have to train now for the task of dance.

0:01:450:01:49

CHEERING

0:01:490:01:52

I played camogie in Philadelphia for a number of years,

0:02:020:02:05

and myself and a few other people were cofounders of the first

0:02:050:02:08

ladies' football team in Philadelphia.

0:02:080:02:11

I played into my early 40s and it was time to pull the plug.

0:02:110:02:14

'So I decided to go back to school and become a personal trainer.'

0:02:150:02:19

Hello. Good morning. Angel's house.

0:02:190:02:22

'My main client base would be Irish dancers.'

0:02:220:02:25

I prefer working with younger people cos I'm a hyperactive person.

0:02:250:02:30

I would say I probably work with at least 500 kids.

0:02:310:02:36

Everybody wants to make the box. Top five, top ten in the world.

0:02:360:02:40

You've got something special.

0:02:400:02:41

If you train with me, you're a part and a member of Angel's team.

0:02:410:02:45

CHEERING

0:03:010:03:04

At the World Championships,

0:03:040:03:06

as teachers run through the steps with their students,

0:03:060:03:08

Angela focuses on her client's physical preparation.

0:03:080:03:12

In through your nose, out through the mouth.

0:03:120:03:15

I only go to national and the worlds

0:03:150:03:17

and my own Oireachtas, which is in Philadelphia.

0:03:170:03:21

I have a lot of private kids in different age groups,

0:03:210:03:24

from under 11s right up till senior.

0:03:240:03:28

I go meet them at the competition and I prep them for dance.

0:03:280:03:31

I do their warm-ups and then in-between competitions,

0:03:310:03:34

I roll out and stretch out every muscle.

0:03:340:03:37

Keep your arms swinging. Good girl.

0:03:370:03:40

It's extremely important to prevent injuries.

0:03:400:03:43

Kids at a young age getting hurt, breaking their growth plate,

0:03:430:03:46

and they continue to dance,

0:03:460:03:48

then they just set themselves up for injury after injury.

0:03:480:03:53

This weekend, I've seen a few people going around with crutches

0:03:530:03:56

and hobbling along.

0:03:560:03:59

But it's when injuries do occur that Angela's

0:03:590:04:01

secondary role as motivation coach comes into play.

0:04:010:04:06

Earlier, 14-year-old Brendan Gaffney rolled his ankle

0:04:060:04:09

and was forced to pull out of the competition.

0:04:090:04:12

For Angela, his recovery starts immediately.

0:04:120:04:16

And I'm so proud of you for doing that.

0:04:170:04:19

So we're going to build on this.

0:04:190:04:21

We're going to get the ankle taken care of, get you back, strong,

0:04:210:04:24

and ready for the nationals.

0:04:240:04:26

It wasn't the worst thing that happened.

0:04:260:04:28

I could have broke my foot, but it was probably the worst feeling in

0:04:280:04:32

the world yesterday, knowing that I sprained it and it just really hurt.

0:04:320:04:37

It wasn't as though you danced badly,

0:04:370:04:41

but we know you can do more than that.

0:04:410:04:43

And I just know from personal experience with injuries,

0:04:430:04:47

-doing a soft shoe...

-It's not worth it.

0:04:470:04:49

Jumping and landing on that.

0:04:490:04:51

It's not worth it.

0:04:510:04:54

While primarily his injury means that Brendan can no longer

0:04:540:04:57

compete in the solo competition,

0:04:570:04:59

it also has wider implications for the rest of his dance school.

0:04:590:05:03

Their ceilidh team is due to perform tomorrow.

0:05:030:05:06

And Brendan is supposed to be the lead dancer.

0:05:060:05:09

It puts us in a difficult position as a school.

0:05:090:05:13

Because we don't have any boys that can replace him

0:05:130:05:16

and if we don't have anyone who can replace him,

0:05:160:05:19

we can't dance the team, so it is really not just about him

0:05:190:05:22

at that point, it's about seven other dancers.

0:05:220:05:25

And there are a handful of dancers on that team who are just

0:05:250:05:29

here for that one event. So...

0:05:290:05:32

..we're going to just say a prayer tonight

0:05:340:05:37

and we're going to wait and see what happens.

0:05:370:05:41

All right, darling?

0:05:410:05:43

Love you.

0:05:430:05:45

And I'll talk to you later on.

0:05:450:05:46

We'll talk this evening and we'll see maybe

0:05:460:05:49

if we can get the physical therapist

0:05:490:05:51

later on and assess if you're able to do ceilidhs tomorrow,

0:05:510:05:54

but that's not my decision to make.

0:05:540:05:56

OK, darling? Love you.

0:05:560:05:58

I think I could do it, but I don't think I should be doing it.

0:05:580:06:02

I think I could freeze it up and tape it all together

0:06:030:06:06

and it would feel fine enough to dance on it, but it's a very

0:06:060:06:10

risky situation out there, so it's going to be very tough.

0:06:100:06:13

I don't know if I want to do it or how I'm going to do it.

0:06:130:06:16

But, you know, just hope for the best at this point.

0:06:160:06:19

But concern for Brendan must be put to one side,

0:06:210:06:24

as there's another recruit from Angel's army who requires attention.

0:06:240:06:27

-Good. How are you?

-You sleep good? Yes. Ready for action?

-Mm-hm.

0:06:270:06:31

-Ready to kick arse?

-Yes.

-OK.

0:06:310:06:34

Sarah's someone I've been working with for quite a while now,

0:06:420:06:45

probably one of the hardest workers I'd ever met -

0:06:450:06:49

a kid that really does everything you ask her to do.

0:06:490:06:52

Get down low, medium, high.

0:06:520:06:54

One day, it just clicked in me that I had to start working

0:06:540:06:58

and that's when I won the nationals for the first time in 2009

0:06:580:07:03

and I won it five times after that.

0:07:030:07:06

I went on to win the All Irelands, the Oireachtas, the All Scotlands,

0:07:080:07:12

and I've been the top two in the world.

0:07:120:07:15

So it all came with hard work.

0:07:150:07:18

Sarah's one of those kids that's not a natural,

0:07:210:07:25

wasn't born with everything lined up naturally,

0:07:250:07:29

but wanted it and proved we can do it, and look where she is today.

0:07:290:07:34

She is number two in the world,

0:07:340:07:35

she won the All Scotlands, she's amazing.

0:07:350:07:39

You can achieve your dreams, you can do whatever you want,

0:07:390:07:41

but it's hard work.

0:07:410:07:43

My normal sneaker size is a six and a half, but these are a two.

0:07:450:07:49

You don't feel anything when you get on the stage,

0:07:510:07:53

so it doesn't matter what size they are.

0:07:530:07:55

The first time I won the nationals, I was like, "Wow. I am good at this.

0:07:550:07:59

"I can win things."

0:07:590:08:02

It wasn't until then where my goal was to win the worlds

0:08:020:08:07

and I know I'm right there and I just have to keep pushing

0:08:070:08:10

and I really hope that it's my turn, and if I do win, it would

0:08:100:08:14

just... It would be amazing cos I can say I'm the best in the world.

0:08:140:08:18

Under Angela's watchful eye, Sarah performs

0:08:280:08:32

the routines she hopes will win her top spot at the World Championships.

0:08:320:08:37

As the results come in, however,

0:08:370:08:38

it's soon becomes clear that this is not her year.

0:08:380:08:43

Although she placed fourth overall, Sarah is devastated.

0:08:430:08:48

I think when it all dies down, Sarah will be happy.

0:08:520:08:55

She has got the globe.

0:08:550:08:57

She's got one. There is a lot

0:08:570:08:58

of kids that go home without one.

0:08:580:09:00

So, you know, you got to keep that perspective.

0:09:000:09:02

It just comes out, you know, at the end.

0:09:060:09:10

Like, all that hard work and the results come out

0:09:100:09:13

and it is just like, "Ugh..."

0:09:130:09:16

-Yeah.

-Comes out.

0:09:160:09:18

The next day, it's time for the group dances.

0:09:300:09:34

And after sleeping on his injury,

0:09:340:09:36

Brendan has good news for his teammates.

0:09:360:09:38

-ALL: Are you dancing?

-Yeah.

0:09:380:09:40

CHEERING

0:09:400:09:43

But the team's elation is short-lived.

0:09:460:09:49

Even with Brendan involved, they fail to get a recall.

0:09:490:09:53

With all hopes of winning any silverware dashed,

0:09:550:09:59

Brendan returns home to Pennsylvania empty-handed.

0:09:590:10:02

Although based in Philadelphia, Angela also has clients in Ireland.

0:10:210:10:26

She regularly comes home to work, connect with family,

0:10:260:10:30

and of course, indulge her love of golf.

0:10:300:10:32

Today, I am golfing at Ardglass, which I'm really excited about.

0:10:360:10:40

I am addicted to golf, actually.

0:10:400:10:43

It keeps me going. I walk the course, it keeps me fit.

0:10:430:10:47

I just love it. This is heaven.

0:10:470:10:49

I grew up in the Brantry,

0:10:490:10:51

just outside Dungannon in the middle of the country,

0:10:510:10:55

overlooking the sheep and the cows in the field.

0:10:550:10:59

I have three brothers and one sister.

0:10:590:11:01

We all got into dancing when we were young.

0:11:010:11:03

I don't even remember, you know.

0:11:030:11:05

It must've been seven, eight, nine years of age.

0:11:050:11:08

We all loved the music. It was just... It was in us.

0:11:080:11:10

You went to dancing class, you travelled to feiseannas,

0:11:100:11:13

and it was great because it was like a day out for the family

0:11:130:11:16

and Mammy would make sandwiches and the flasks and off we'd go.

0:11:160:11:20

It was great. We enjoyed doing it.

0:11:280:11:30

We were trying to get a medal and it was more social than anything else.

0:11:300:11:35

My sister was a much better dancer than me. And we did teams.

0:11:350:11:39

But I had the passion to be out in the field with a camogie stick.

0:11:390:11:42

My passion was always camogie and football.

0:11:440:11:48

Irish dancing and the Gaelic football,

0:11:480:11:51

they're both our natural... That's our culture right there.

0:11:510:11:54

They're not worlds apart. That's our Irish culture. It's fantastic.

0:11:540:11:57

That was a good play there, wasn't it?

0:12:020:12:05

But it is not all leisure time for Angela.

0:12:160:12:19

She works with young dancers at the Clann McCaul school of dance,

0:12:190:12:22

where her sister-in-law teaches.

0:12:220:12:24

-Just put the runners on, guys.

-Everybody, runners on.

0:12:410:12:44

So how are we feeling, guys?

0:12:440:12:47

Everybody been working on what they had to do?

0:12:470:12:50

Irish dancing, traditionally, is a beautiful dance form.

0:12:500:12:53

OK, I spy with my little eye...

0:12:530:12:56

Personally, I wouldn't really like it to be referred to as a sport.

0:12:560:13:00

You know, it's a dance form. That's first and foremost what it is.

0:13:000:13:05

But I think if one area sees that fitness has been successful

0:13:050:13:10

and has brought their dancers forward, others are going to say,

0:13:100:13:13

"Right, we need to get onto this fitness thing,"

0:13:130:13:16

and to a degree, that did influence us.

0:13:160:13:19

Wall squats are a great start.

0:13:190:13:21

So hold this one and I want to make sure she can stay in a nice

0:13:210:13:24

stable position with shoulders in line with the hips.

0:13:240:13:27

And in that position, could you hold it and give me

0:13:270:13:29

a couple of shoulder presses?

0:13:290:13:31

And really square at the shoulder. Give me three.

0:13:310:13:37

Two, and breathe. And up. How did that one feel?

0:13:370:13:42

-Yeah. It's hard.

-Yeah, it's hard.

0:13:420:13:46

Without the fitness, they can't do the moves that Irish dancers are

0:13:460:13:49

now doing, the moves that they're

0:13:490:13:51

doing are so athletic, balletic, tap,

0:13:510:13:54

all of the different influences that have shaped Irish dancing.

0:13:540:13:57

They have to learn the skill.

0:13:570:13:58

They have to learn the footwork, all of that,

0:13:580:14:01

but if you don't have fitness, forget it.

0:14:010:14:03

You get up onto that big stage,

0:14:030:14:05

you're not going to be able to do it.

0:14:050:14:07

One of the school's dancers who has felt the benefits of Angela's

0:14:140:14:17

regime on the big stage is Olivia Murray.

0:14:170:14:21

Currently ranked third in the world, she also took first

0:14:210:14:25

place at the Irish Nationals last year.

0:14:250:14:28

Stay lateral. Higher, higher, higher!

0:14:280:14:31

My results definitely have become more consistent

0:14:310:14:35

since I've started working with Angela.

0:14:350:14:37

Before, I'd be up one minute and down the next,

0:14:370:14:39

and we were left wondering, "Why is this happening?"

0:14:390:14:42

And you'd be getting sore muscles

0:14:420:14:44

and you weren't able to consistently train for the period of time

0:14:440:14:49

that you want to, but now I'm working with Angela,

0:14:490:14:53

I'm able to really train as hard

0:14:530:14:56

as I want because my body is able to deal with it.

0:14:560:14:59

Higher! That's it. Good girl.

0:14:590:15:03

If we look at Olivia here,

0:15:030:15:05

and we're looking at what is the perfect dance body, we're going

0:15:050:15:08

to look at her turn out, because it is really all about that turnout.

0:15:080:15:11

So I'm going to ask Olivia to stand on the turn board

0:15:110:15:14

and I'm going to go to the opposite side

0:15:140:15:17

and I'm going to put my hand on her hip,

0:15:170:15:19

so I want her to stay square... Turnout, Olivia.

0:15:190:15:22

So I'm looking for that nice turn out there, without her cheating

0:15:220:15:25

and sticking her butt out, she's almost 100% there.

0:15:250:15:30

90 degree turnout.

0:15:300:15:32

Turnout is in Irish dancing an element of rotation from the hip,

0:15:320:15:36

the knee, the foot and the ankle.

0:15:360:15:38

And it has to be from those

0:15:380:15:40

three places for the perfect turnout.

0:15:400:15:43

Some of the little things I look at is,

0:15:430:15:45

I look at the top of the patella here and then I find the shinbone.

0:15:450:15:49

And here we have the tibialis anterior that runs alongside it,

0:15:490:15:52

and, you know, this bone comes right up

0:15:520:15:55

and comes through the middle of the knee and I like to see that.

0:15:550:15:57

You know, you have some kids that I'll see this tibialis anterior

0:15:570:16:01

and this shinbone and it runs through the side of the knee

0:16:010:16:04

or it runs up through the front of the knee.

0:16:040:16:07

So they're not perfectly lined up,

0:16:070:16:09

and teachers wonder why we can't straighten their legs,

0:16:090:16:11

you can't do certain things.

0:16:110:16:13

But that's their bones and ligaments, you know.

0:16:130:16:15

You can't change that.

0:16:150:16:17

While she does train highly successful dancers,

0:16:270:16:30

Angela's family are always keen to remind her

0:16:300:16:33

that her own dancing career wasn't quite so illustrious.

0:16:330:16:37

-Her dancing career was...

-Terrible.

0:16:370:16:41

Short and shorter.

0:16:410:16:44

I didn't want to dance any more,

0:16:440:16:45

so I thought, "Well, how am I going to get out of this?"

0:16:450:16:48

-I'll just get up there.

-So she went to America.

0:16:480:16:50

LAUGHTER

0:16:500:16:53

And that was the end of it.

0:16:530:16:55

I'll never forget. The first time we went to Philadelphia and Angela was

0:16:550:16:59

only taking an interest in this and we had girls competing.

0:16:590:17:01

I said, "Could you stretch them or do something?"

0:17:010:17:03

She started stretching the girls

0:17:030:17:05

and then the next day they got up to dance.

0:17:050:17:07

Well, the legs went this high.

0:17:070:17:09

And I was standing there going,

0:17:090:17:11

"Oh, my goodness. How did that happen?"

0:17:110:17:14

It's discipline, you know, because you have to work out.

0:17:140:17:16

-The steps are extremely difficult.

-But then the person comes along.

0:17:160:17:20

They have that bit of extra natural flair and it's just magic.

0:17:200:17:25

And no matter how hard you train, you can never beat that.

0:17:250:17:29

CHEERING

0:17:290:17:31

Back in the States, with the mid-Atlantic Championships

0:17:500:17:53

just around the corner, Angela is in the gym with Brendan Gaffney.

0:17:530:17:57

Now fully recovered from the foot injury

0:18:000:18:03

he sustained last year in Montreal, he must place in the top five to

0:18:030:18:07

qualify for next year's World Championships.

0:18:070:18:10

Feel like doing a workout here myself today.

0:18:130:18:16

They only let five boys out of the whole competition

0:18:160:18:18

recall for worlds.

0:18:180:18:20

It's very important to me because I really wanted to just come

0:18:200:18:23

back after my foot and just really dance again.

0:18:230:18:26

How do you feel?

0:18:260:18:27

Pretty tired. But good.

0:18:270:18:29

No, no, you're supposed to say beyond fabulous. Come on!

0:18:290:18:32

Feeling great.

0:18:320:18:35

Good job.

0:18:350:18:36

Before Montreal, my mom was just diagnosed with cancer

0:18:360:18:39

and my mother couldn't watch me dance in Montreal

0:18:390:18:42

and that was where I hoped I could at least bring her home something,

0:18:420:18:45

and when I hurt my foot, that just made it all worse for me.

0:18:450:18:49

And I just couldn't come back home without nothing.

0:18:490:18:52

This year, she's coming back, so it's very helpful just to have her

0:18:520:18:55

there as a mom and that really just makes me feel comfortable and safe.

0:18:550:18:59

Makes me feel like I can do my best.

0:18:590:19:03

-I see you've two different socks on.

-Yeah.

0:19:030:19:05

Take it easy, easy. It's not a race, Brendan.

0:19:060:19:09

Come on! Move forward.

0:19:090:19:12

Just pretend that ground's on fire.

0:19:120:19:15

-And if you don't lift your foot, what happens?

-It'll burn.

0:19:150:19:18

You're going to get burned, correct. So how do you feel?

0:19:180:19:22

-Fantabulous.

-Beyond fabulous.

0:19:220:19:25

Another familiar face who had a disappointing

0:19:280:19:31

result at the worlds will also be competing at the mid-Atlantics.

0:19:310:19:35

Sarah Oldham will be defending the title

0:19:360:19:40

she has won the last three years running in the ladies' under 20s.

0:19:400:19:43

The worlds was kind of disappointing.

0:19:450:19:49

After the fact, I took a step back and I was like,

0:19:490:19:53

"I still am third in the world and that's something to be proud of."

0:19:530:19:57

This is the mid-Atlantic regional Oireachtas, so it's my region.

0:19:570:20:01

I'm feeling pretty good. I'm feeling confident.

0:20:030:20:07

When I first came to her, I got home and I cried to my mom.

0:20:070:20:13

Kids tend to forget about from the knee down, you know,

0:20:130:20:17

because they don't realise they have these muscle imbalances.

0:20:170:20:22

These muscles. I didn't even know about half of them.

0:20:220:20:25

They come and they say, "I need to do this exercise and that exercise,"

0:20:250:20:29

and I say, "It's not about the exercises.

0:20:290:20:31

"Let's correct what is already hurting the body."

0:20:310:20:35

Let's go, girl!

0:20:370:20:39

I'm attending Monmouth University at the moment.

0:20:390:20:42

I am doing health and physical education with

0:20:420:20:44

a minor in business cos I want to be like Angela.

0:20:440:20:48

It's hard, definitely,

0:20:480:20:50

trying to get to practise all the time, with all the homework.

0:20:500:20:54

I just have to remind myself that I am a competing athlete

0:20:540:20:58

and as much as it stinks because I see all my friends going out, after

0:20:580:21:03

the fact, I'm winning competitions and I get to go to all these places.

0:21:030:21:08

-I'm fine with missing out a little.

-That's good.

0:21:080:21:11

It's the Thanksgiving weekend,

0:21:310:21:33

and crowds take to the streets to enjoy the parade.

0:21:330:21:36

But it's pageantry of another sort in downtown Philadelphia,

0:21:360:21:40

where the mid-Atlantic Oireachtas is kicking off.

0:21:400:21:43

Good luck. Good luck. Make it happen.

0:21:430:21:46

Is that good enough for you?

0:21:530:21:56

At 51, the energy's short.

0:21:560:21:59

I entered the Jesuits in 1992, but before that, I was a TCRG,

0:22:030:22:07

so I had a school of Irish dancing in New Jersey.

0:22:070:22:11

Brendan's mom wasn't here last year and he came to me

0:22:110:22:16

and asked me if I would pray for his mom,

0:22:160:22:20

so I knew what kind of faith Brendan had, so when I saw him

0:22:200:22:24

here this year, I wasn't surprised when he asked me to bless his feet.

0:22:240:22:29

We ask God's blessing on you, Brendan,

0:22:290:22:32

and your feet and your legs, through your hard shoe,

0:22:320:22:35

your soft shoe, and especially your spirit.

0:22:350:22:38

We ask this blessing in the name of the Father and of the Son

0:22:380:22:41

-and of the Holy Spirit.

-Amen.

0:22:410:22:43

I think it's important that we always have our faith

0:22:430:22:45

because it allows us to accept some of the difficult situations

0:22:450:22:48

and then obviously celebrate the joys,

0:22:480:22:50

so sometimes you don't get the answer to why.

0:22:500:22:54

But it helps you to accept why.

0:22:540:22:56

Unfortunately, I missed the worlds when Brendan danced

0:22:560:22:59

because I was in the middle of battling stage four breast

0:22:590:23:03

cancer, but thank God, all of the prayers were answered

0:23:030:23:07

and I am cancer-free now.

0:23:070:23:11

So this is my chance to watch him qualify all over again.

0:23:110:23:15

Today is the big day.

0:23:150:23:17

Today is what you have been waiting for. All right?

0:23:170:23:19

Today is what all the work's been about.

0:23:190:23:22

You're going to get on stage and you're going to turn it on, Brendan.

0:23:220:23:25

You're going to dance like there's no tomorrow.

0:23:250:23:28

You own this stage today.

0:23:280:23:31

As both parents watch on, Brendan takes to the stage,

0:23:310:23:35

knowing that finally his chance has come to qualify for the next

0:23:350:23:38

World Championships and make up his disastrous showing last year.

0:23:380:23:43

Competitor 113.

CHEERING

0:24:200:24:23

Reach for the stars! Hayley, smile, be happy. It's not a funeral.

0:24:450:24:50

-Did you warm up?

-No.

-Right. Let's get ready.

0:24:520:24:56

I just like to zone everyone out.

0:24:570:25:00

I mean, sometimes it might seem rude

0:25:000:25:02

but I just don't like talking to anyone,

0:25:020:25:04

cos I concentrate better.

0:25:040:25:06

Right now, I'm listening to Justin Bieber's new album,

0:25:060:25:09

so, yeah, hopefully he helps today.

0:25:090:25:14

I'm just looking to dance my best, like I did last year,

0:25:140:25:17

and hopefully end up first again and a perfect score.

0:25:170:25:21

That's very positive.

0:25:210:25:22

You know, if you don't go on the stage positive,

0:25:220:25:25

might as well pack your bags and go home.

0:25:250:25:27

And Sarah hopes that positivity can help her become

0:25:270:25:30

mid-Atlantic champion for the fourth consecutive year.

CHEERING

0:26:080:26:10

With the dancing out of the way, it's results time,

0:26:100:26:14

and Brendan needs a place in the top five to qualify for the worlds.

0:26:140:26:18

Whatever he gets, he gets, and we'll be happy.

0:26:180:26:20

APPLAUSE

0:26:200:26:24

And in seventh place, 113, Brendan Gaffney.

0:26:240:26:28

Finishing in seventh place means that Brendan will miss out

0:26:290:26:33

on the worlds next year.

0:26:330:26:34

Bit bummed out, but it's OK.

0:26:360:26:38

Just got to work harder next year, so... It's all good.

0:26:380:26:41

He's an excellent dancer.

0:26:410:26:43

He's a great performer and he's a great sportsman.

0:26:430:26:47

I'm so proud of the way he behaves.

0:26:470:26:50

I really am.

0:26:500:26:52

-I love you, baby.

-Thank you.

0:26:520:26:55

I know what Brendan went through to get where he is today

0:26:580:27:01

and, you know, we pick up the pieces

0:27:010:27:03

and we move forward to next year

0:27:030:27:05

and the North American Championships and we're just going to come

0:27:050:27:09

back stronger and better and it'll be a great year.

0:27:090:27:13

Disappointment for Brendan, but for Sarah,

0:27:130:27:17

it's been a successful title defence.

0:27:170:27:20

Number 117, Sarah Oldham, from the Heritage Irish Dance Company.

CHEERING

0:27:300:27:33

What's next is I'm going to work my hardest

0:27:330:27:35

and hopefully achieve my dream of winning the worlds.

0:27:350:27:39

The World Championships are in Glasgow.

0:27:400:27:43

I believe Sarah's dancing on March 28th. I'm a very happy daddy.

0:27:430:27:47

I'm delighted for her, you know.

0:27:490:27:51

She works extremely hard, so when you see that, it's a good result.

0:27:510:27:56

Angela has helped me get on the road to becoming a world champion.

0:28:000:28:04

Angela is an angel.

0:28:040:28:06

Next for me is finishing off school next year and in October of 2016

0:28:100:28:15

be a master of applied functional science, then after that,

0:28:150:28:19

I am hoping to return to Ireland in 2017 and set up shop at home

0:28:190:28:25

and do it all over again.
