Good evening, I'm Edith Bowman, bringing you the red carpet action

:00:31.:00:37.

from the Orange British Academy Film Awards 2012, from the gorgeous

:00:37.:00:41.

London's Royal Opera House. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Meryl Streep,

:00:41.:00:46.

Penelope Cruz, Gary Oldman, Martin Scorsese - the list is endless. All

:00:46.:00:51.

the stars will be here. We are poised and ready for action, for

:00:51.:01:01.
:01:01.:01:23.

the biggest, most glamorous night I am joined by Eddie Redmayne. How

:01:23.:01:29.

are you? I'm good. The you are taking this in your stride. It's

:01:29.:01:33.

always a bit overwhelming but it should be an amazing night. These

:01:33.:01:37.

guys have been out for a while, they look freezing cold! It's been

:01:37.:01:42.

a great year for you. You are celebrating the success of it My

:01:42.:01:45.

Week With Marilyn and you are nominated for rising star yourself.

:01:45.:01:49.

You do this work in a vacuum and over an extended period of time,

:01:49.:01:53.

you never think anyone sees it. But suddenly at events like this you

:01:54.:01:58.

meet up with people you haven't seen for a while and as well as

:01:58.:02:02.

being a celebration of film, it feels like a nice thing to see

:02:02.:02:06.

those guys and hang out with them. It feels like the start of

:02:06.:02:11.

something brilliant. That is very kind. Loving the take on the suit

:02:11.:02:16.

tonight. This is Christopher Bailey, who runs Burberry. Be made a lovely

:02:16.:02:26.
:02:26.:02:27.

velvet jacket. Good luck tonight, As the red carpet becomes awash

:02:27.:02:32.

with stars, we shall be taking a closer look at the five contenders

:02:32.:02:37.

for the highly coveted Best Film award. First stop, it's the best of

:02:37.:02:41.

British talent in the brilliant Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Its

:02:42.:02:47.

leading man and Best Actor nominee, Gary Oldman, will be stopping by

:02:47.:02:51.

for a chat in the second. Right after we've taken a closer look at

:02:51.:03:01.
:03:01.:03:04.

There is a mole right at the top of the circus. He's been there for

:03:04.:03:12.

years. You are not talking about a kind of fantasy spy. It's not James

:03:12.:03:16.

Bond, it's a completely different at the John Roll together. There

:03:16.:03:21.

are no gadgets, no gizmos, no Aston Martins. Have you got clearance for

:03:21.:03:29.

that? Well, I'm not bloody training it up outside. I know it is one of

:03:29.:03:35.

five men. All I want from you is one code name. Smiley has to figure

:03:35.:03:39.

out these people based on how he understands them. It brings out the

:03:39.:03:47.

human element. I think he's a fascinating character because of

:03:47.:03:54.

his discretion, sobriety, self- control. You don't see that

:03:54.:04:04.
:04:04.:04:08.

He lets everything come to him up. The room temperature changes to him.

:04:08.:04:13.

He completely and utterly beguiles people into thinking he is harmless.

:04:13.:04:18.

I will do my at most. In life you wouldn't notice him. But under the

:04:18.:04:22.

microscope of the drama, you scrutinise him and you find that

:04:22.:04:32.
:04:32.:04:41.

this man is seriously intelligent, Congratulations. It is so deserving.

:04:41.:04:46.

Thank you, it's exciting. It's great to have you back on the red

:04:46.:04:50.

carpet and great for you to be nominated. It's been a few years.

:04:50.:04:57.

Let's not put a number on it. But this role, I think I heard you say

:04:57.:05:02.

that you were surprised that you were the director's first choice -

:05:02.:05:11.

is that right? I'm always surprised. Why me? What was it about this role

:05:11.:05:20.

that you were so taken with? remember the series from 1979 and

:05:20.:05:28.

the book. It's an iconic literary character. It is a bit like an act

:05:28.:05:36.

are being asked to play Hamlet. You kind of know what it is. It was

:05:36.:05:43.

exciting but it is hard working in the shadow of Alec Guinness.

:05:43.:05:48.

you brought something of yourself to that as well. With that ensemble

:05:48.:05:53.

cast you had as part of the film, it was incredible. I know, the

:05:53.:06:00.

creme DLA creme of British acting. Six degrees of Harry Potter as well.

:06:01.:06:07.

Who is stuck behind you as well! I'm not finished with you yet. I've

:06:07.:06:11.

got to ask you about the rest of the nominees in your category. You

:06:11.:06:16.

are the only Brit. I've got a good feeling. You never know. I've got

:06:16.:06:22.

everything crossed for you, Gary. Congratulations, nice to see you.

:06:22.:06:31.

Daniel, how are you? I'm good, very good. Are you on official duties

:06:31.:06:37.

this evening? I'm at presenting the award for Best Supporting Actress.

:06:37.:06:42.

That is a great one. It is. I'm lucky enough to have worked with

:06:42.:06:49.

Carey Mulligan a few years ago, but there are no favourites. We will

:06:49.:06:53.

mention everyone else's name later on. This will be balanced later on.

:06:53.:06:58.

Have there been films that have stood out for you this year? Tinker

:06:58.:07:05.

Tailor Soldier Spy, no favourites but... I watched Moneyball the

:07:05.:07:11.

other day and thought that was awesome. I believe that is up for

:07:11.:07:16.

Best adapted screenplay as well. It's a wide and a very dear. That

:07:16.:07:20.

is what is so exciting about it. haven't managed to see nearly all

:07:20.:07:24.

of it, so that will be my big mission in my three weeks off after

:07:24.:07:30.

this is all done. Congratulations with the woman in black, it's a

:07:30.:07:40.

Let's take a look at another of the nominees in the Best Film category.

:07:40.:07:45.

A beautiful, stylised action romance between a getaway driver

:07:45.:07:50.

and a downtrodden single mum. This is Drive up. We'll be chatting to

:07:50.:07:56.

Christina Hendrix from the film in just a moment. You give me a time

:07:56.:08:00.

and a place, I'll give you a five- minute window. Anything happens in

:08:00.:08:06.

that five minutes and I'm Yours. I don't sit in, don't carry a gun. I

:08:06.:08:16.
:08:16.:08:16.

drive it. Driver is the stunt man, as well as the getaway driver.

:08:16.:08:22.

put this kid behind the wheel, there's nothing he can't do.

:08:22.:08:27.

driver pads his bank account by getting involved in other things.

:08:27.:08:32.

You get your money, whose debt is paid. You never go near his family

:08:32.:08:37.

ever again. It turns out that this particular cava is bad for everyone.

:08:37.:08:41.

He's got to go. It leads to the unravelling of a lot of people's

:08:41.:08:47.

hopes and dreams. The driver in the film is a hard man, half machine

:08:47.:08:51.

concept. He doesn't understand the difference until he realises that

:08:51.:08:57.

he falls in love. It's through that process that the machine eventually

:08:57.:09:02.

takes over the human side. We all have theories about who he is but

:09:02.:09:06.

it's best to leave it up to the audience. It's wild, it's an

:09:06.:09:10.

experiment because you have this family drama and you have this

:09:10.:09:15.

really intense, violent, visceral revenge film. It sort of feels like

:09:15.:09:22.

a dream that turns into a nightmare. Congratulations on the recognition

:09:22.:09:27.

Drive was getting. What a film, I loved it. It is testament to the

:09:27.:09:31.

variety of films that are doing so well this year. I think so. I'm

:09:31.:09:36.

really proud to be a part of it and excited to be here to support it.

:09:36.:09:42.

Hold the lead Nicholas will wind. Keep your fingers crossed. Ryan

:09:42.:09:47.

Gosling seems to be the man of the moment. Ladies swoon at the mere

:09:47.:09:52.

mention of his name. What is you like to work with? Divine. Is an

:09:52.:09:55.

extraordinary act and a real professional. Everything you want

:09:55.:10:02.

him to be, he is. He seems to be versatile over the types of roles

:10:02.:10:06.

he can do. Yes, I think he is slowly conquering the movie

:10:06.:10:11.

business. He is taking over the world. I've got to ask what you are

:10:11.:10:15.

wearing tonight because you are gorgeous. I am wearing Vivienne

:10:15.:10:24.

Westwood. Keeping it British. How are you, Michael Fassbender?

:10:24.:10:32.

Pretty good. I was at the awards in Dublin last night. I just got here

:10:32.:10:37.

this afternoon. Ready to pick up another one? I don't know about

:10:37.:10:44.

that. I'm just happy to be here. It's an amazing group of people to

:10:44.:10:52.

be in a category with. Absolutely. It is great. I've said it before,

:10:52.:10:55.

especially the type of film, if it can encourage people to go and see

:10:55.:10:59.

it, sometimes people will be a bit put off by what people think it is,

:10:59.:11:03.

so this really helps and will hopefully encourage people to go

:11:03.:11:09.

out and watch it. Have you met George Clooney and Brad Pitt?

:11:09.:11:15.

I work with Brad Pitt, I knew him up from working with him on a film.

:11:15.:11:21.

I met George Clooney when I was out at the Golden Globes. They are

:11:21.:11:27.

great, they are at the top of what they do. Not only as actors but

:11:27.:11:31.

producers. George is a director as well. They are really good guys as

:11:31.:11:37.

well. It's nice. But he managed to do this great thing where the small,

:11:37.:11:40.

independent films you are making of the ones that are getting

:11:40.:11:43.

recognition, as well as doing the mainstream, bigger films as well.

:11:43.:11:52.

Not everyone manages to achieve that. I know, touch wood! Touch

:11:52.:12:00.

them together. The Scottish kiss! I've just been lucky. I've been

:12:01.:12:06.

surrounded by really talented people. It stacks things in your

:12:06.:12:11.

favour. It is always going to be a risk. You think, this looks

:12:11.:12:15.

interesting to me but you don't know how people will take to it.

:12:15.:12:19.

But I've been working with really good people. Good luck for tonight.

:12:19.:12:29.
:12:29.:12:32.

Taking a breather from red carpet are rivals for a second, next stop

:12:32.:12:34.

- sisters are doing it for themselves in one of this year's

:12:34.:12:40.

best female ensembles. Leading lady pilot died this -- Viola Davis will

:12:40.:12:44.

be joining me shortly for a chat. Now let's take a look at the story

:12:44.:12:49.

behind The Help, another runner for the Best Film. They help us about

:12:49.:12:54.

these unlikely women all coming together to create change. It was a

:12:54.:12:58.

chance for me to be in a movie that illuminated a part of our history

:12:58.:13:07.

that we have a tendency to be silent about. The story mainly

:13:07.:13:13.

focuses around Skeeter or and Mini. And also Aibileen. It is hard for

:13:13.:13:16.

Aibileen to tell her stories because she's been told she is

:13:16.:13:21.

invisible. But all the sudden someone says, who are you? I want

:13:21.:13:25.

to interview you. Skeeter just graduated with a degree in

:13:25.:13:30.

journalism. Two people from very different worlds in very dangerous

:13:30.:13:36.

circumstances come together into each other's lives.

:13:36.:13:39.

Skeeter is trying to impress this publisher in New York. You said to

:13:39.:13:43.

write about what disturbs me. I'd like to write something from the

:13:43.:13:49.

point of view of The Help. I was raised by a coloured woman. We love

:13:49.:13:53.

them and they love us but they can't even use the toilets in our

:13:53.:14:01.

houses. You are fired! Mini is very vocal because she refuses to be

:14:01.:14:06.

invisible. It's a really interesting dynamic. They start an

:14:06.:14:10.

expose of sorts with all the maids of Jackson, Mississippi. I'm going

:14:10.:14:18.

to do it. We all laugh. I've got to come up with the questions, too?!

:14:18.:14:22.

It takes both of the races to work together to get back story out

:14:22.:14:32.
:14:32.:14:36.

Congratulations on your Best Actress nomination. How much do you

:14:36.:14:41.

want to be in this film? It's a great film. I wanted to be in this

:14:41.:14:44.

film so bad. I did not want to be in the audience watching this film

:14:44.:14:50.

are thinking, gosh, I want to be a part of this. I'm so happy, I feel

:14:50.:14:55.

like I've won the lottery in every way this year. It's been a dream up.

:14:55.:14:59.

It has literally transformed my life The. And the film is getting

:14:59.:15:02.

such a great response from fans, but also in terms of awards

:15:02.:15:05.

ceremonies. It must be very fulfilling for you and the rest of

:15:05.:15:11.

the cast. Absolutely. It feels like hard work has paid off. You want

:15:11.:15:17.

the audience to respond to it, you want people to respond or your work,

:15:17.:15:22.

otherwise you are a legend in your own mind. It has been wonderful. I

:15:22.:15:27.

think it has been deserved, I really do. I agree. Have a great

:15:27.:15:37.
:15:37.:15:39.

It must feel nice when you walk up the carpet and they are yelling

:15:39.:15:47.

your name. Yes. I thought that was your voice! I listened to your mix

:15:47.:15:51.

CD all of the time. I can't believe that. That was three years ago.

:15:51.:15:56.

beautiful gesture on your part. Thank cue. Congratulations on this

:15:56.:16:01.

role in Moneyball. It must be nice to get recognition for this role.

:16:01.:16:05.

It is incredible. To be nominated for a BAFTA and an Academy Award,

:16:05.:16:11.

it is very surreal. It shows us the Vorsah -- versatility of you as an

:16:11.:16:17.

actor. We love you in those roles. It shows you have more to offer.

:16:17.:16:22.

am just an actor. I like to play different parts. It is important to

:16:22.:16:28.

challenge yourself. What about working with someone who has years

:16:29.:16:33.

of knowledge like Brad Pitt? He must be able to suck in...

:16:33.:16:39.

doesn't know anything. He is the greatest! He is such a good

:16:39.:16:43.

producer, a good actor. He has made such cool and brave choices and I

:16:43.:16:48.

respect him so much. Congratulations. Thank you. Hoping

:16:48.:16:54.

to see you on the stage. Almost 1,000% sure I will win! Thank you

:16:54.:17:04.
:17:04.:17:04.

Time once again to pause for a moment and take a look at another

:17:05.:17:10.

contender in the Best Film category. Funny, adorable and nominated for

:17:10.:17:14.

12 awards tonight, it is the artist. Its leading man and nominated for

:17:15.:17:19.

Best actor, Jean Dujardin, will be chatting to us in a moment,

:17:19.:17:22.

straight after we have seen this love letter to the Hollywood silent

:17:22.:17:32.
:17:32.:17:48.

It is the story of a silent movie actor and he is a massive star. He

:17:48.:17:58.
:17:58.:18:01.

meets a young lady. He will fold He is a joker, sometimes arrogant.

:18:01.:18:10.

A nice guy. No instinct for the future. George Valentin can't make

:18:10.:18:18.

the adaptation into talkies and resists. He hits bottom. It is the

:18:18.:18:24.

rise of the young actress who will become very famous. This girl,

:18:24.:18:34.
:18:34.:18:47.

She has definitely got star quality, It is a love story not only for a

:18:47.:18:57.
:18:57.:19:11.

man and woman, it is also a love Crazy, crazy. Jean Dujardin, how

:19:11.:19:20.

are you? Fine. It is cold. Come on, yes. Like France. You should be

:19:20.:19:25.

used to it. Congratulations on this film. Thank you, I'm very happy and

:19:25.:19:33.

very proud. I am proud for the artist and the film. Did you ever

:19:33.:19:37.

expect that this film would capture people's imaginations the way it

:19:37.:19:47.
:19:47.:19:52.

has? No. It is a small movie, 35 days for the shooting. It is just a

:19:52.:19:58.

simple movie, a love story. It is unbelievable. Did you discover you

:19:58.:20:07.

have very good cheekbones after all of the expressiveness? Les! It is

:20:07.:20:15.

my face, I'm sorry. Gorgeous. beautiful. A my nose, my eyebrows.

:20:16.:20:21.

Stop it! I hope to see you tap- dancing at the after-show party.

:20:21.:20:30.

Yes, every day. My feet would be warm if I was tap-dancing!

:20:30.:20:34.

Still to come, we will take a look at our remaining Best Film

:20:34.:20:40.

contender and chatting to both stars. First, we know they can act,

:20:40.:20:45.

but can they dress? Let's take a closer look at the glamourous and

:20:45.:20:52.

the gorgeous in our red carpet fashion fix. I am here to show off

:20:52.:21:00.

my dress! I am wearing a very beautiful suit that was made by

:21:00.:21:10.
:21:10.:21:11.

Christopher Bailey. I love this stress. -- dress. I feel like a

:21:11.:21:21.
:21:21.:21:25.

million dollars. Everybody here is Red carpet glamour and it is at its

:21:25.:21:28.

finest. Speaking of which, the gorgeous Michelle Williams. How are

:21:28.:21:34.

you? A little gold. What are you wearing? A dress from age and them.

:21:34.:21:43.

Wow! I know you're a little cold. Congratulations on the nomination.

:21:43.:21:48.

An incredible role. They don't come along very often for actresses.

:21:48.:21:52.

is once-in-a-lifetime. In terms of the dedication you put into

:21:52.:21:57.

recreating it. It was like changing for you. It was. It is the hardest

:21:57.:22:03.

I have ever worked on a movie. lived it. You were reading love

:22:03.:22:07.

stories in a Marilyn voice to your girls. I did, she became a big part

:22:07.:22:12.

of our lives. How does it feel to be in a category with people like

:22:12.:22:17.

Meryl Streep? Such a thrill. I am such a fan of her. You look

:22:17.:22:26.

gorgeous, go and get warm. Good Time to take a look at the last of

:22:26.:22:32.

our contenders for the best film. With equal amount of laughs and

:22:32.:22:36.

tears, George Clooney plays a Hawaiian landowner who has to deal

:22:36.:22:42.

with male menopause and a desire -- dysfunctional family in their

:22:42.:22:47.

descendants. George will be here in person after this. I am ready now,

:22:47.:22:53.

ready to talk, ready to change. I am ready to be a real husband and a

:22:53.:23:03.
:23:03.:23:03.

real father. Just wake up. Please, What you've been going through, it

:23:03.:23:08.

is a tough deal. Just trying to keep my head above water. It is a

:23:08.:23:13.

story about Matt King, who is a father and her husband, and is not

:23:13.:23:17.

really great at either of them. don't know what to do. You need to

:23:17.:23:26.

spend more time with her. He is now in charge of these two girls who he

:23:26.:23:33.

doesn't know very well. Shut up! Easy. Where did you learn to talk

:23:33.:23:38.

like that? It is kind of like a lot of teachers' relationships --

:23:38.:23:43.

children's relationships with their fathers. I will be a lot more civil

:23:43.:23:47.

if he's around. Don't ever do that to me again. She loves him and she

:23:47.:23:51.

knows he has a lot to offer, but she looks at him as a child. She

:23:51.:24:00.

takes on the parenting role. You don't have a clue, do you? Mum was

:24:00.:24:08.

cheating on you. I am the antithesis of Matt King. I would

:24:08.:24:14.

like to know who my life was -- wife was seeing. He is stoic and in

:24:14.:24:18.

his own world. Brian is able to pay attention to her. You might not be

:24:18.:24:26.

able to hear this right now, but she was lonely. Who are you? The

:24:26.:24:31.

anything I know for sure if you are a god damn liar. This is a story of

:24:31.:24:41.
:24:41.:24:51.

his slow and gentle a wakening. -- Higher! How are you? Good to see

:24:51.:24:59.

you. You look very nice. So do you. Are you staying warm? Not bad, I

:24:59.:25:06.

have thermals. How are you? Good. Congratulations on this film. It

:25:06.:25:10.

doesn't rely on anything apart from great performances and great story.

:25:10.:25:15.

And bad shirts. And high trousers! I like that. Nominated for best

:25:15.:25:24.

actor. Have you got a speech? think it will probably be a Gary

:25:24.:25:33.

Oldman board Jean de Jardine. I get the sense... Brits love you. I will

:25:33.:25:39.

still have a drink! Nominated with your bodies -- buddies as well.

:25:39.:25:44.

don't like him so much. Keeping you guys separate. The rest of the guys

are fine. Have there been things that have caught your attention

:25:48.:25:54.

this year? A lot. A lot of films I have liked this year. I really

:25:54.:26:01.

loved the artist. I loved we need to talk about Kevin. Tilda Swinton

:26:01.:26:06.

is great in it. A bunch of others. You guys worked together. Nice to

:26:06.:26:09.

see her up there getting recognition for it. Hard but

:26:09.:26:14.

brilliant performance. It is a rough film. You want to get that

:26:14.:26:19.

kid! That is the thing about this year, there's such a diversity of

:26:19.:26:25.

films. Silent movies to terrifying films are just great stories.

:26:25.:26:29.

is a really interesting film, fun film. A lot of great movies this

:26:29.:26:39.
:26:39.:26:41.

A little bit of a crazy welcome. is really nice for top people must

:26:41.:26:45.

have been waiting in the cold for a long time. You have been here

:26:45.:26:48.

before it and you always get a great response. People are always

:26:48.:26:53.

kind to us. Congratulations on Moneyball. Thank you, you guys are

:26:53.:26:57.

not supposed to like baseball. don't get it but I like the film.

:26:57.:27:04.

get it. Were you a big baseball fan? Not really. Now you are?

:27:04.:27:11.

book was about value and how to create a fair playing field. Those

:27:11.:27:15.

things are universal. What a great bunch of people to be in a category

:27:15.:27:22.

with. We have got some great our up-and-coming actors. The most

:27:22.:27:27.

amazing work. Not so sure about George Clooney? Gary Oldman, we

:27:27.:27:34.

have all... He is as good as it gets. A hero of mine. Do you still

:27:34.:27:40.

get star-struck or overwhelmed when you meet people like that who have

:27:40.:27:47.

inspired you? Not so much. It is more of a privilege to get to talk

:27:47.:27:52.

and chat with them. I really value that. A Jonah Hill, great to see

:27:52.:27:56.

him. Great to see him getting the game. They were shouting his name

:27:56.:28:03.

earlier. He is a super hero. Such versatility as an actor as well.

:28:03.:28:07.

Yes, he really did an amazing job. It is well-earned and always nice

:28:07.:28:13.

to see someone pops out of the box. How long did it take you to get

:28:13.:28:21.

dressed? The buttons take a little bit. Cufflinks? About 15. Top of

:28:21.:28:28.

the table. But like tonight. -- good luck tonight. That is it from

:28:28.:28:33.

the star studded BAFTA red carpet this year. Brad Pitt, George
