today's quarterfinals, and we will preview this weekends Grand Prix at | :00:00. | :00:00.
Silverstone. That's in Sportsday at 6:30pm. Now it's time for The Film | :00:00. | :00:00.
Review. Hello and welcome to The Film Review | :00:00. | :00:23.
here on BBC News. To take us through this week 's similar releases here | :00:24. | :00:27.
is Mark Kermode. As ever a mixed bunch. We have The 100`Year`Old Man | :00:28. | :00:33.
Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared, which has been | :00:34. | :00:35.
described as the Swedish Forest Gump. We have Here And Now, a | :00:36. | :00:41.
British movie about coming`of`age and a blossoming relationship. And | :00:42. | :00:48.
we have Tammy, Melissa McCarthy starring and co`writing in that. The | :00:49. | :00:57.
hundred `year`old man, do we get Swedish comedy? This is based on a | :00:58. | :01:03.
hit novel which was hit a couple of years before it was published here. | :01:04. | :01:08.
The story is, it stars Robert Gustafsson, described as the | :01:09. | :01:12.
funniest man in Sweden, which I have to say is the definition of damning | :01:13. | :01:16.
with faint praise. At the beginning he climbs out of the window and | :01:17. | :01:20.
disappears and gets to a bus to another town, accidentally picks up | :01:21. | :01:23.
a suitcase and has a biker gang following him, teams up with an old | :01:24. | :01:27.
road and a woman with a pet elephant, wealth that is happening | :01:28. | :01:35.
he is flashing back through his past life which has a Forest Gump Trail | :01:36. | :01:38.
through the 20th century. He is basically interested in explosions, | :01:39. | :01:40.
and during the course of his strange life he meets Franco, Stalin, | :01:41. | :01:44.
Reagan, Oppenheimer, and affect history. He is a clip. Comrade | :01:45. | :01:51.
Stalin once you to tell him everything you know about the | :01:52. | :02:02.
nuclear bomb. Yes, sure. But maybe a drink first. | :02:03. | :02:19.
One drink and then you tell me everything. | :02:20. | :02:30.
You sound just like Franco. You get the general idea. It is elegant as | :02:31. | :02:57.
well as Forest Gump. And a bit of Candide. It takes the Forest Gump | :02:58. | :03:01.
thing, going through these events, and yet all the way through he is | :03:02. | :03:06.
indifferent to the death, destruction and chaos around him. I | :03:07. | :03:08.
think there is a problem here which is the humour doesn't travelled the | :03:09. | :03:12.
same way the Scandinavian film while thing travels. The humour doesn't | :03:13. | :03:20.
travel in the same way. When this opened in Sweden, Denmark and | :03:21. | :03:22.
Finland it was a huge hit, and it was a Christmas movie, and they | :03:23. | :03:26.
loved it. It will have a much harder time here. In some ways it is | :03:27. | :03:34.
structurally reminiscent of the film like The Young And Prodigious Ts but | :03:35. | :03:40.
it has a brass band film, and at every moment, the story is telling | :03:41. | :03:44.
you, this is funny, this is funny. You are thinking, well, it is not, | :03:45. | :03:50.
it is right and satirical and rather bleak and a bit nihilistic but not | :03:51. | :03:54.
funny `` Drive. Over here because the humour does not work in the same | :03:55. | :03:59.
way as it does in Scandinavia, you miss a lot of it so consequently it | :04:00. | :04:03.
is possible to become irritated. Here And Now. It is a very low | :04:04. | :04:07.
budget movie clearly made with a lot of love and affection starring | :04:08. | :04:11.
Lauren Johnson and Andy Rush. She is a town girl taken on holiday, like | :04:12. | :04:16.
Withnail and I, gone on holiday by mistake, and she is very gobby, she | :04:17. | :04:21.
meets this young lad who doesn't say very much, which is an ironic point, | :04:22. | :04:25.
and what happens is while she is there she is seduced by the | :04:26. | :04:29.
landscape and his company. The earphones come out and she starts | :04:30. | :04:35.
hearing the sound of the woods and at one point she produces a | :04:36. | :04:39.
harmonica and plays it. She starts to become seduced by the sober | :04:40. | :04:43.
lifestyle. It was rather sweet. Very well played by the centrally. A real | :04:44. | :04:48.
warmth and affection about it, and very low budget but rather | :04:49. | :04:53.
charming. 2000 `year`old script, a sub stable of the town mouse and the | :04:54. | :04:58.
country mouse. But it is a good story that is why it has lasted. | :04:59. | :05:03.
Tammy. Melissa McCarthy co`writes the script with the director, and | :05:04. | :05:07.
the story is that she loses her job and her husband and goes on the road | :05:08. | :05:10.
with their drunken grandmother played by Susan 's arrant on, and a | :05:11. | :05:14.
whole manner of cataclysmic events in student, which inevitably attract | :05:15. | :05:19.
the attention of the police. Here is a clip. We have reports that someone | :05:20. | :05:29.
was burning jet ski on the late last night. O... Super uncool, I never | :05:30. | :05:36.
burn watercraft might you know? No. We have also been tracking tracking | :05:37. | :05:42.
2004 Cadillac that was involved robbery. Anything on that? You | :05:43. | :05:50.
know... Wow. Hawaiian Bears shirt, we rescue a lot of those. You | :05:51. | :05:57.
probably see quite a few. Calm weather is, let's go, right this | :05:58. | :06:04.
way. I bet you see a lot of bears. No, ma'am. Are you serious? There | :06:05. | :06:14.
was a bee! She is really funny and I want to like the movie more because | :06:15. | :06:19.
it has a terrific cast. The problem is, what is Willie interesting is | :06:20. | :06:23.
that she meets a whole load of very empowered, interesting women who | :06:24. | :06:27.
don't fit the stereotype those bromance comedies have but it is not | :06:28. | :06:31.
funny enough, and I wanted to laugh out loud and ended up smiling and | :06:32. | :06:34.
feeling warmly towards it and liking it, but wanting it to make me laugh | :06:35. | :06:39.
more. The sad thing is it is the Woody Allen thing, insufficient | :06:40. | :06:44.
laughter. It is a real shame because it is very good`hearted and has all | :06:45. | :06:47.
the right intentions but is not as funny as it needs to be, which is a | :06:48. | :06:52.
shame. For a comic movie. Exactly, it is a problem. A hard days night. | :06:53. | :07:00.
Just reissued, 50th anniversary, a new print, in the cinema, a Blu`ray | :07:01. | :07:06.
coming out, and you go, that film is a sprightly, and market, punky, just | :07:07. | :07:11.
as much as 50 years ago. So much better than many others, everything | :07:12. | :07:14.
from Don is about Elvis to certain boy bands more recently, it is | :07:15. | :07:21.
actually funny. In one hand it is a social documentary of Britain on the | :07:22. | :07:25.
cusp of revolution, the beetles are funny, at the height of their hit | :07:26. | :07:31.
making capability, it is nouvelle vague, it is a really smart movie. | :07:32. | :07:36.
Your DVD is Grand Budapest Hotel which you should see on the big | :07:37. | :07:40.
screen. But funnily enough it works on the small screen largely because | :07:41. | :07:44.
of Ralph Fiennes's, performance, you don't think of him as a comedic | :07:45. | :07:48.
performer, and the detail, whenever you look at a Wes Anderson movie it | :07:49. | :07:52.
is like looking at a Swiss watch, you can watch repeatedly and the | :07:53. | :07:56.
gags and tiny, everything is so tightly choreographed that it does | :07:57. | :07:59.
stand up on the small screen. And yes, but you loved it the first | :08:00. | :08:13.
time. Yes. Not everybody does, Wes Anderson is, it has to be said, not | :08:14. | :08:16.
everybody's cup of tea. But Ralph Fiennes is very funny which is not | :08:17. | :08:19.
what you would expect from him. Being funny? Being really funny. He | :08:20. | :08:21.
is the funniest person on screen this week against Melissa McCarthy | :08:22. | :08:23.
and The 100`Year`Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared. He | :08:24. | :08:25.
is funnier than Melissa McCarthy certainly. We will have to differ. | :08:26. | :08:28.
Before we go, Moore film news and reviews across the BBC, online and | :08:29. | :08:33.
including all our previous shows. That is it for this week. A load of | :08:34. | :08:38.
laughs. Thank you for watching and goodbye. | :08:39. | :08:47.
Silverstone. That's in Sportsday at 6:30pm. | :08:48. | :08:49.
Good evening. What a contrast in weather conditions we have seen | :08:50. | :08:54.
today. I will offend people when I say we have had the warmest day of | :08:55. | :08:57.
the year | :08:58. | :08:58. |
