Welcome to The Film Review on BBC News. | :00:00. | :00:21.
Taking us through the week was Maximo releases is Mark Kermode. | :00:22. | :00:35.
Taking us through the week's film releases is Mark Kermode. | :00:36. | :00:38.
This week we have It Comes At Night, which is a very creepy thriller. | :00:39. | :00:41.
The Midwife with Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot. | :00:42. | :00:43.
I have read enough to know that this is your kind | :00:44. | :00:53.
It is not a jump-scare horror like the trailers make it look like. | :00:54. | :01:04.
If you expect that, you will be disappointed. | :01:05. | :01:06.
It is set after the outbreak of an unspecified plague-like incident, | :01:07. | :01:17.
which has pretty much done for civilisation. | :01:18. | :01:18.
There was a family, mother, father, son living in a remote woodland. | :01:19. | :01:21.
The windows are boarded up, there is a corridor with a red door | :01:22. | :01:28.
which is the only access to the outside world. | :01:29. | :01:40.
When an intruder breaks into the house, they have to make | :01:41. | :01:42.
a decision about whether or not to accept | :01:43. | :01:44.
They would bring friendship and food supplies, but also bring suspicion | :01:45. | :01:48.
and paranoia and desire, and mysterious sleepwalking. | :01:49. | :01:50.
She was having nightmares so I woke up. | :01:51. | :01:57.
I was in the back hall, I saw the door open, I heard something. | :01:58. | :02:01.
Think real hard. Tell me what you remember. I can't remember. | :02:02. | :02:31.
It is all that claustrophobic, is it? | :02:32. | :02:38.
You get the sense of people starting to distrust each other and be | :02:39. | :02:41.
If you think of a film like The Witch that has deep themes, | :02:42. | :02:47.
they are creepy but not full of jump scares. | :02:48. | :02:49.
They make you feel very worried and uncomfortable. | :02:50. | :02:54.
The sound effects and score work in favour of this film. | :02:55. | :02:57.
It occupies a realm between being awake and being asleep. | :02:58. | :03:07.
The screen contracts during certain sequences. | :03:08. | :03:16.
It is implying it is a dream sequence. | :03:17. | :03:20.
Maybe we are, maybe we are not awake or asleep. | :03:21. | :03:22.
It is what happens when you lose track of objective reality | :03:23. | :03:25.
and you just start to trust your fears. | :03:26. | :03:27.
It is like that classic horror movie with a cold hand | :03:28. | :03:29.
It is not the film the trailers make it look like. | :03:30. | :03:33.
They make it look like it is a slam-bang horror. | :03:34. | :03:36.
If you want something that is going to cause you to lose | :03:37. | :03:39.
I think you would not enjoy it but admire it. | :03:40. | :03:48.
The director is only in his 20s. Yes, it is just ridiculous, he is | :03:49. | :03:56.
Yes, it is just ridiculous, he is incredibly talented. | :03:57. | :03:59.
It is all to do with what is implied rather than what is actually shown. | :04:00. | :04:03.
Which is the sort of film that is the most frightening. | :04:04. | :04:06.
I hear you, in terms of the skill that went into it. | :04:07. | :04:10.
The Midwife is about a friendship between the two main characters. | :04:11. | :04:18.
Catherine Deneuve is Beatrice, her father's lover has had | :04:19. | :04:23.
a medical diagnosis, suddenly she reappears. | :04:24. | :04:29.
It turns out maybe she wants friendship, closure, | :04:30. | :04:38.
These two characters start to build a friendship, | :04:39. | :04:59.
The key distinction between them is that one of them has been | :05:00. | :05:05.
involved in bringing children into the world. | :05:06. | :05:07.
What I like about this was it has well-observed characters. | :05:08. | :05:09.
It has people in professions that you actually believe in. | :05:10. | :05:13.
I can understand all of those things that happen and I can think | :05:14. | :05:16.
It has a rather over-emphatic and tingling score. | :05:17. | :05:23.
It tells you things are moving when you did not need to be taught. | :05:24. | :05:26.
It was played with some very fine performances. | :05:27. | :05:28.
For the most part, it allows you to observe the characters. | :05:29. | :05:33.
And that is important, to have characters that you can | :05:34. | :05:38.
And that is on my list, oddly enough. | :05:39. | :05:49.
And that, oddly enough brings us to Spider-man: Homecoming. | :05:50. | :05:58.
I said that this was a low-key character study posing | :05:59. | :06:03.
as a superhero movie, but this is like Ferris Bueller's | :06:04. | :06:09.
He also happens to have the superpowers, and he wants | :06:10. | :06:14.
What he is desperately trying to do is to punch above his weight, | :06:15. | :06:20.
whilst also keeping his identity absolutely secret. | :06:21. | :06:24.
This is the craziest thing that has ever happened to me. | :06:25. | :07:19.
This is Tom Holland, who won the BAFTA award, a rising star. | :07:20. | :07:27.
It is doing something different with the character. | :07:28. | :07:36.
We have seen many incarnations of Spiderman. | :07:37. | :07:40.
Since I have been working as a critic this is the third | :07:41. | :07:43.
or fourth Spider-Man film - how many times are you | :07:44. | :07:45.
They are playing to the adolescent story, the school boy story, | :07:46. | :07:49.
the high school story, so there is all the action stuff, | :07:50. | :07:51.
web spinning and dealing with criminals, but really | :07:52. | :07:53.
what makes it work is the high school stuff, the stuff | :07:54. | :07:56.
about wanting to fit in and being awkward, | :07:57. | :07:58.
wanting to grow up but not actually growing up yet, | :07:59. | :08:02.
and what he has actually got to do is hang out in the canteen. | :08:03. | :08:06.
I went in thinking, do we really need to go here, all over again? | :08:07. | :08:11.
But this does do something different. | :08:12. | :08:14.
He's very charming in a very kind of oddball way. | :08:15. | :08:22.
Only one false step in the film, there's a lovely sequence | :08:23. | :08:25.
which is a direct reference to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and | :08:26. | :08:28.
You have been loving this, this week, as anyone who has been | :08:29. | :08:47.
following you on Twitter, Baby Driver. | :08:48. | :08:49.
It is a car chase movie which is actually a musical. | :08:50. | :08:54.
Everything in it is cut to a fantastic selection of pop tunes. | :08:55. | :08:58.
It is really brilliant cinema, see it on a big screen with a good sound | :08:59. | :09:09.
system, it is witty, clever, poignant and nostalgic | :09:10. | :09:11.
and it is made by somebody who was going to direct another | :09:12. | :09:14.
movie and then walked away because it wasn't | :09:15. | :09:16.
Now he has made exactly the movie he wanted and it is a pleasure | :09:17. | :09:23.
to see a director like Edgar Wright saying, this is the | :09:24. | :09:26.
It is like an American in Paris meets the French connection. | :09:27. | :09:33.
I hear you, see it on the big screen. | :09:34. | :09:37.
That said, a quick thought for anyone not wanting | :09:38. | :09:40.
to see on the big screen, what is out on DVD? | :09:41. | :09:43.
It is a film about ageing, about regret, about losing | :09:44. | :09:49.
You can do something really interesting with the superhero | :09:50. | :10:04.
theme, and as long as we get movies like that and Spider-Man, | :10:05. | :10:07.
there will always be new life, people say, haven't we had | :10:08. | :10:15.
But as long as people keep reinventing it, | :10:16. | :10:18.
Yes, but you must go and see It Comes At Night. | :10:19. | :10:26.
It will get under your skin and you will appreciate it. | :10:27. | :10:32.
That said, still lovely to see you, as ever. | :10:33. | :10:37.
A reminder that you can find all the film news and reviews online | :10:38. | :10:42.
And you can find all of our previous programmes on the BBC iPlayer. | :10:43. | :10:47.
Whatever it is you are brave enough to see. | :10:48. | :11:06.
We have got some more warm sunshine across many parts of the country in | :11:07. | :11:12.
the second half of the weekend. This | :11:13. | :11:14. |
