FA Cup Sportsday, but now it is time
for The Film Review. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:07
Hello, and welcome to
The Film Review on BBC News. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
To take us through this week's
cinema releases is Mark Kermode. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
So Mark, what do we have this week? | 0:00:23 | 0:00:29
So we have Kenneth Branagh's take on
Murder on the Orient Expression. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:36
Killing a sacred deer from Yorgos
Lanthimos. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
And the bad mums are back in bad
mums Christmas. It is that time of | 0:00:39 | 0:00:46
year. It is. Let's start with Murder
on the Orient Expression. Had just a | 0:00:46 | 0:00:52
bit of publicity, people probably
know it is out. You would be | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
hard-pressed to avoid it. It has
been on the big screen and small | 0:00:55 | 0:01:01
screen before, there was an early
70s version,ings so this is the new | 0:01:01 | 0:01:08
version directed by Kenneth Branagh
who stars at Hercule Poirot with the | 0:01:08 | 0:01:13
most unbelievable twin layers
moustache. The moustache should get | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
a billing of its own. He is
travelling from Istanbul to call | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
lay, on the train. He has to get
somewhere but once he gets on, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
something is going to happen, there
is a virtual Cluedo board of famous | 0:01:25 | 0:01:30
people. So we have Derek jack by,
Will Liberal Democrat Defoe, Dame | 0:01:30 | 0:01:38
Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer and
Johnny Depp as a gangster. Something | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
is going to happen. Here is a clip. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:51
Well, hello. Eye linger any longer
I'll have to charge rent. I'll pay. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:09
Have another drink.
Are you insulted? Disappointed. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:17
So men have a good look. All they
have to do is keep their mouth shut | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
and they can take home any prize
they want. Still the mouth opens. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:36
Hmmm.
I don't know why I am laughing. I | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
don't think I am meant to. You are.
There is lot of scenery chewing. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
There are scenes of Hercule Poirot,
eating chocolate cake, enjoying it | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
and so have the cast. They are
sinking their teeth into the | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
scenery. A murder is committed.
Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
secrets and everyone has to be
interrogated. What I like about | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
this, and I did like it, is firstly
it is old fashioned entertainment. I | 0:03:00 | 0:03:06
remember seeing the 74 version and
with this, I knew the story, I know | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
some people won't, if you don't you
are in for a treat because it is a | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
real Swiss watch kind of constructed
mechanism. But the whole thing takes | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
place on the train, and it is shot
in 65mm. The camera sashays up and | 0:03:18 | 0:03:25
down the train, outside and inside.
You get this wonderful overhead | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
shot, there is a sequence in which
we discover the victim's body. It is | 0:03:29 | 0:03:35
like they have gone to, every
possible end to make the most | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
visually of this confined space.
Some of the exterior shots look like | 0:03:39 | 0:03:45
The Polar Express. What What I liked
about it was the cast, they all get | 0:03:45 | 0:03:51
what kind of movie they are in. They
are playing ripe character, it is | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
thumbnail sketches. Branagh is
enjoying himself enormously. He | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
likes the character of Hercule
Poirot. Hercule Poirot is a | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
perfectionist, he is a bit
obsessive, he keeps trying to | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
straighten people's ties, he says I
see the world as it should be and I | 0:04:08 | 0:04:13
can't relax if something is out of
kilter. You have to go into this | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
thinking it is an Agatha Christie,
there is... Does it need to be | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
remade? It looks beautiful but I
don't know... Does that matter? I | 0:04:22 | 0:04:28
thought it was big screen
entertainment, like a variety show, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
the train becomes a stage, we have
famous stars come on, do their bit, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
I really enjoyed it. I went in
feeling trepidatious, smiled all the | 0:04:37 | 0:04:42
way through and despite the fact I
know the plot, I thought its | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
revelations were handled well. I
know some critics have been sniffy | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
about it. It's a solid piece of old
fashioned entertain. It looked good. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:55
It looks really good, that is not a
little thing. OK. OK. The Killing of | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
a Sacred Deer. I mean, I have seen
the trailer so many times and I am | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
terrified by that. That really look
good but terrifying. Yorgos | 0:05:05 | 0:05:12
Lanthimos, he has worked in black
comedy before, this is something | 0:05:12 | 0:05:17
more disturb, Colin Farrell is a
heart surgeon, he has a perfect | 0:05:17 | 0:05:22
life. He has a glamorous house and
two lovely children. He has a | 0:05:22 | 0:05:28
strange relationship with a teenager
called Martin who turns up at work. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
At first he seems to be innocent but
then he starts to look like a young | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
Norman Bates. There is a hint of We
Need To Talk About Kevin the story | 0:05:38 | 0:05:45
is becoming a weirdly surreal
revenge drama. You start laughing | 0:05:45 | 0:05:51
awe you would, then it starts moving
into the territory of The Shining | 0:05:51 | 0:05:57
there are cameras creeping through
corridor, we look to some extent | 0:05:57 | 0:06:02
towards a film like Funny Games
which is painful to watch. The thing | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
I like about it and Yorgos Lanthimos
would like, I spent the film not | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
knowing where it was going. Yes, it
is a horror movie on one level, on | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
one level it is Saw for the up
market, art house crowd. On another | 0:06:15 | 0:06:21
level it's a strange distance black
comedy. You never quite relax into | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
it. I felt very uneasy and I have
thought a lot about it since I saw | 0:06:24 | 0:06:30
it. Is there going to be a
recommendation for Bad mums | 0:06:30 | 0:06:37
Christmas Three women decide to
rebel against the tyranny of being a | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
super mum with the help of swearing
and alcohol. Along comes Christmas, | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
this time they rebel against the
tyranny of the most stressful time | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
of the year. Here is a clip.
Manufacture I am like a giant stress | 0:06:49 | 0:06:57
ball from November to New Year, I
just want to enjoy Christmas again. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:03
Yeah. Let's do it. What? Guy, what
is wrong with us? Have we learned | 0:07:03 | 0:07:12
nothing? We are mothers. If things
are not going our way, what do we | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
do? We hide in the bathroom? No, we
don't do that. No, we stand up, and | 0:07:16 | 0:07:23
we fight back. Yes. So if we want to
do Christmas our way this year, then | 0:07:23 | 0:07:29
weir going to do Christmas our way.
I laughed during that clip. Clip. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:35
When I saw the first one, I went
along, low expectations and I | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
enjoyed it. In the case of this same
thing, I went along thinking I | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
enjoyed the first one and it was
nothing like as funny, it is not | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
because this time the bad mums are
having to deal with their own bad | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
mums so it is like three separate
story, that said I counted how many | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
times I laughed and I laughed seven
times. I have a six laugh rule. If | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
you laugh six times it is officially
a comedy, and yes it is all over the | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
players it doesn't make sense, it
doesn't have anything like the | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
simplicity of the first one, but I
kind of laughed. I liked the | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
character, it is very very much a
retread of the only thing, once | 0:08:11 | 0:08:16
again the solution involves alcohol
and swearing but I would be lying if | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
I said I didn't laugh. That is
Christmas! So very, the remake of | 0:08:19 | 0:08:27
Wages of Fear it did really badly 40
years ago and nobody got to see it. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
Now it is back and it is one of the
most brutal gruelling visceral | 0:08:31 | 0:08:38
American action movies of the 70s.
It is a extraordinary piece of | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
working you need to see it on the
big screen. It is coming out on | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
Blu-ray on Monday. If you get a
chance to see this film projected. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:52
Score by tan yes Rien Dream it is a
brilliant cinema experience. I was | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
about to say I am going to borrow
your Blu-ray you you are saying | 0:08:57 | 0:09:03
watch it on the big screen. You need
to see it on a big screen, this is a | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
film they worked out, two-years in
the making, and, then it came out | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
and it came out the same time as
Star Wars, they didn't want a | 0:09:12 | 0:09:20
gruelling visceral thriller, that,
you know, a story that starts at a | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
point of no hope and goes down hill
from there. OK. DVD for anyone who | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
wants to stay in It Comes At Night
it is a chill her. It is a story in | 0:09:28 | 0:09:36
a near future in which a virus has
attacked mankind. Our family are | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
hiding in a cab none the woods. It
comes at night, but actually the | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
danger is from within. It is about
people turning on each other, | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
distrusting each other, paranoia, it
has a lot to say about the modern | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
political landscape and it is not a
film that relies on gory shock, it | 0:09:53 | 0:09:58
has an atmosphere of creeping dread.
I have brought a DVD for you, you | 0:09:58 | 0:10:03
are going to like horror films in
the very near future. You have said | 0:10:03 | 0:10:10
woods, cabins and paranoia, you do
that deliberately. In a subtle way. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:17
That Stle paranoia I love. Thank
you. It is my early Christmas | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
present. It is a delight. Thank you.
Try harder next week. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:26
