Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones. And Matt Baker.

:00:15.:00:18.

Our guest tonight is a messiah of pop music who has duetted with some

:00:19.:00:22.

of the best in the business, from Robbie Williams to Enrique Iglesias

:00:23.:00:26.

But it was a recent colloboration that saw her realise her potential

:00:27.:00:48.

Great to see you, so that was you on the Italian version of The Voice

:00:49.:01:08.

with Sister Cristina. Lots of people would probably assume she was the

:01:09.:01:18.

real deal? She is the real deal, and of the four finalists left, the

:01:19.:01:22.

other ladies were foxy but she was the most sprightly. It looked really

:01:23.:01:31.

good fun. I actually got her to do this move. It is very infectious

:01:32.:01:37.

because everybody here was doing it too. Now Conchita Wurst's win must

:01:38.:01:54.

have surprised quite a few people. Online there is an interesting

:01:55.:02:04.

comment, her real name is Thomas and she really achieved a celebration of

:02:05.:02:11.

diversity. Eurovision should be about surprises anyway but they

:02:12.:02:15.

didn't see that one coming. The biggest surprise is that maps

:02:16.:02:22.

downloaded the whole Eurovision album. A compilation? It was ?9 and

:02:23.:02:31.

37 songs. There is a lot on there that I like. Since she won, a lot of

:02:32.:02:47.

people have been channelling her luck. Here is Nigella. Separated at

:02:48.:02:58.

birth! This is what Kylie might look like as Conchita. Kiss me once,

:02:59.:03:20.

Conchita! Send in your pictures to the usual address and we will have a

:03:21.:03:32.

look. Now here is Gloria with some advice to anyone who wants to extend

:03:33.:03:35.

their home. You could end up paying more in

:03:36.:03:42.

council tax than you expected. The extension constitutes a separate

:03:43.:03:48.

dwelling, and instead of getting one council tax bill, you get two. In

:03:49.:03:53.

December 2011, Martin and Kieron bought this house with an extension

:03:54.:03:59.

that have been added to six years earlier but after they moved in

:04:00.:04:04.

there got a letter from an organisation saying that our council

:04:05.:04:08.

tax purposes, the extension would now be classed as a separate

:04:09.:04:12.

dwelling. We just couldn't believe it when that letter came. It has its

:04:13.:04:19.

own separate bedroom with ensuite facilities and they classified the

:04:20.:04:24.

utility space as a kitchen and we could plug in a microwave there so

:04:25.:04:30.

we had cooking facilities. The extension was classed as a separate

:04:31.:04:33.

Band-Aid property so that as well as having to pay on average ?150 per

:04:34.:04:38.

month for the last three years, they have had an extra ?2000 in total to

:04:39.:04:44.

pay for their extension. Nobody else lives with them and they use the

:04:45.:04:49.

extension only as a utility room and a guest bedroom. Their argument for

:04:50.:04:57.

that was that there is potential use for the area. Martin and Kieron have

:04:58.:05:02.

had to go to great lengths to convince the authority that their

:05:03.:05:07.

home is only one dwelling. We have taken out the sink, taken out the

:05:08.:05:17.

power points, and now they have classed it as one property but they

:05:18.:05:27.

have raised the band of the Council tax. They will now have to pay an

:05:28.:05:33.

extra ?350 per year after their band increase. The valuation office

:05:34.:05:39.

agency steps in whenever a property is sold, and decides whether its

:05:40.:05:43.

council tax status should be changed. It is estimated by the

:05:44.:05:49.

government that there are over 24,000 annexes and extensions in

:05:50.:05:54.

England alone so this double council taxation could affect a lot of

:05:55.:05:58.

people. Sue and Paul decided to build an extension when Sue's mother

:05:59.:06:03.

moved in with them five years ago but when they put their house on the

:06:04.:06:08.

market the same thing happened. Along came an extra council tax

:06:09.:06:12.

bill. When you are getting permission to

:06:13.:06:15.

add on what you have, did anybody say to you that you are opening

:06:16.:06:20.

yourselves up to have two council tax bills? No, we weren't informed

:06:21.:06:28.

at all. All of the correspondence we had, nothing was ever mentioned with

:06:29.:06:33.

regards to two separate banding is on this property. Did you ever

:06:34.:06:40.

raised the issue yourself? No, we never thought it was relevant

:06:41.:06:44.

because we treat it as one family home. There seems to be a lack of

:06:45.:06:49.

communication between the various departments of the council and

:06:50.:06:53.

homeowners. Planning expert Ian has come to shed some light on it. If

:06:54.:06:58.

you are just building an extension with an extra bedroom, that's

:06:59.:07:02.

unlikely to be classed as a true annex. If you put in extra bathrooms

:07:03.:07:08.

and kitchens, you move towards that being self-contained and the agency

:07:09.:07:13.

will get interested. What most councils provide now is

:07:14.:07:17.

pre-application advice. I'm not sure many councils at the meeting will

:07:18.:07:22.

flag up the issue of council tax. Every local authority have their

:07:23.:07:26.

policies and really it just needs to be a sentence in there for the

:07:27.:07:32.

potential of liability. So many council tax bills, so many

:07:33.:07:37.

questions. I have come to Sue and Paul's local authority to get some

:07:38.:07:42.

answers. This is the leader of Herefordshire county council. The

:07:43.:07:48.

main complaint seems to be that nobody told us, so surely there must

:07:49.:07:53.

be responsibility somewhere in the planning? There is no formal

:07:54.:07:57.

requirement to provide such notification but the point you raise

:07:58.:08:01.

is a good one and whilst it has not been done in the past, we would be

:08:02.:08:05.

happy to make sure that anybody in the future who applies for in annex

:08:06.:08:11.

onto their house, we will draw attention to the fact that the

:08:12.:08:15.

application could bring with it an additional council tax liability. So

:08:16.:08:20.

you are giving us the assurance it could happen in the future. Here in

:08:21.:08:29.

Herefordshire it will happen. A real result for the One Show. Literally

:08:30.:08:33.

it turned around on the day of filming. As you gathered, people

:08:34.:08:37.

don't get the warning upfront so when you apply for your extension,

:08:38.:08:43.

they don't say to you, listen, be careful because this could create

:08:44.:08:49.

two council tax bills. If you are buying a house, as those two chaps

:08:50.:08:54.

did, you must make sure your solicitor does a search upfront to

:08:55.:09:01.

make sure you know whether the house will attract two bills. If you are

:09:02.:09:06.

building an extension, you may have seen two doors but they argue the

:09:07.:09:11.

second door was already there. On the other hand they did not know

:09:12.:09:17.

about exemptions for their mother or about the 50% reduction because the

:09:18.:09:20.

government is now of course encouraging people to put on an

:09:21.:09:28.

extension to help young people, not just elderly people, to help young

:09:29.:09:32.

people because they cannot get on the property ladder. If you're

:09:33.:09:40.

elderly parent is over 65, thank goodness you are not, then they are

:09:41.:09:47.

exempt. This is a quirk in the law, providing the grandma or grandad is

:09:48.:09:51.

living in the annex and not the original house. This is a little

:09:52.:09:56.

quirk, but who is going to check that night where grandma is

:09:57.:10:01.

sleeping? And you are on the hunt for some more stories for Rip Off

:10:02.:10:13.

Britain? Yes, food, clothes, everything. The address is at the

:10:14.:10:21.

bottom. You are sorting everybody out. Kylie, I know you were watching

:10:22.:10:26.

that film closely but I hope this housing issue won't be a problem for

:10:27.:10:31.

you in Australia. Listen to this voice, do you recognise it? It is

:10:32.:10:45.

Daniel here, hey mum! I know where you are going with this. I don't

:10:46.:10:51.

recognise it! The characters of Scott and Charlene from Neighbours

:10:52.:11:00.

have been living happily ever after off-screen. We couldn't look more

:11:01.:11:06.

awkward! Now they have a son who appears on our screens for the first

:11:07.:11:11.

time tomorrow on Channel five, and we have this message for you. Hey

:11:12.:11:19.

Mum, it is Daniel here, your son, in case you didn't recognise me. I

:11:20.:11:23.

haven't heard from you for ages and somebody told me you have been busy

:11:24.:11:28.

on The Voice and releasing a new album. You never told me that. Give

:11:29.:11:32.

me a call, that would be great because I really miss you. That is

:11:33.:11:47.

brilliant. He is very handsome! That is so brilliant. I don't really

:11:48.:11:52.

follow the show, maybe I am going to get back into it now and keep an eye

:11:53.:11:58.

on my song. That was just brilliant. Have you ever seen him before? I

:11:59.:12:03.

have seen a picture but that is the first time. You need to be more

:12:04.:12:15.

hands-on as a mother, Kylie. He should be more like 12 years of age.

:12:16.:12:20.

She did Skip Ramsay Street quite young, I have to say. The family is

:12:21.:12:26.

still together. A group of people are trying to prevent a mountain in

:12:27.:12:31.

the Lake District being sold to an outsider and they are appealing for

:12:32.:12:34.

donations from across the country. It could cost them ?2 million so

:12:35.:12:40.

they have an uphill task ahead of them.

:12:41.:12:45.

In this small parish hall, there is an important meeting not concerning

:12:46.:12:49.

schools, roads or public services, but about something the locals have

:12:50.:12:56.

a passion for. A mountain. This mountain rises to just under 2850

:12:57.:13:03.

feet high. Commonly known as Saddleback, this mountain is up for

:13:04.:13:05.

sale. The estate agents describe Saddleback, this mountain is up for

:13:06.:13:20.

sale. The estate agents it as a unique investment opportunity. They

:13:21.:13:24.

would, wouldn't they? But why is it for sale? Well, the owner, the Earl

:13:25.:13:39.

of Lonsdale, has to pay a huge inheritance tax bill. Consequently,

:13:40.:13:51.

yours for ?1.75 million, and me and Buster now have to climb it. A year

:13:52.:13:57.

ago, " made a flippant comment on social media saying everybody should

:13:58.:14:00.

put ?10 into the ports to buy the mountain. It has now led to a public

:14:01.:14:09.

campaign. People have contacted saying, we want to give you ?3000,

:14:10.:14:15.

we want to give you our pension. Is this just local people? It is

:14:16.:14:20.

attracting people from all over the country, Germany, New Zealand,

:14:21.:14:27.

France. People are talking with their feet. This time last week it

:14:28.:14:33.

didn't exist. What are the supporters think? It is brilliant.

:14:34.:14:41.

Even in the snow? Any weather going. Today it has been snowing! I think

:14:42.:14:45.

it is important to keep the mountain like this for the future. I am

:14:46.:14:54.

pushing for the summit. This area is protected for people to roam on it

:14:55.:14:59.

by the countryside and rights of way actor so doesn't really matter buys

:15:00.:15:05.

it? I met Richard from the National Park authority. It is true to say

:15:06.:15:14.

the mountain is secured by whoever buyers it, but it would be good if

:15:15.:15:18.

there was a group that had the long-term interest and conservation

:15:19.:15:23.

access to this mountain at heart, and this group as do that. As I

:15:24.:15:28.

struggle on, down below, Debbie is finding it easier to galvanise her

:15:29.:15:33.

supporters. I have asked for a meeting with the state and the

:15:34.:15:38.

trustees, because they have it within their gift to make us the

:15:39.:15:43.

preferred bidder. When you have gone through a certain pain barrier and

:15:44.:15:47.

beyond a certain elevation, you begin to see the attraction of it.

:15:48.:15:56.

It is this. Are you here because you would like to see the possibility of

:15:57.:16:00.

this coming to public ownership? Raise your hand if that is the case.

:16:01.:16:06.

Thank you. Two hours later, Buster and I have just past the halfway

:16:07.:16:12.

point, in a biblical downpour. Luckily for Debbie, the weather has

:16:13.:16:16.

not put a dampener on the meeting. It went really well. People

:16:17.:16:20.

appreciated Debbie's hard work and it looks as if things have moved

:16:21.:16:25.

forward. I don't earn a lot of money, but it is something I

:16:26.:16:29.

passionately believe in. It is not about buying it with something to

:16:30.:16:34.

get back from it. The views give the reward. It is beautiful. Whether

:16:35.:16:38.

Debbie and the group managed to raise the funds for the deadline of

:16:39.:16:41.

the 2nd of July remains to be seen. But one thing we can be certain

:16:42.:16:47.

about, and that is that this mountain and its spectacular views

:16:48.:16:51.

are, despite the price tag, priceless. Even on an afternoon like

:16:52.:17:00.

this. Come on, Buster. You are a soggy doggie!

:17:01.:17:06.

Sadly, the weather was too bad for Andy to get to the top. But it

:17:07.:17:10.

proves that you get a lot of weather for your money, if nothing else.

:17:11.:17:14.

Ever thought about buying a mountain? It has not crossed my

:17:15.:17:19.

mind. What would you do at the top of a mountain. Let's talk about your

:17:20.:17:23.

new single. It is called title-macro. And there is a

:17:24.:17:28.

brilliant story in the song. Tell us what happened? -- it is called I Was

:17:29.:17:37.

Gonna Cancel. I had two days in the studio with Pharrell. On the second

:17:38.:17:43.

day, I was having a bad day. And in the car on the way, the voice in my

:17:44.:17:49.

head was just saying, keep it together, you are fine. You can fall

:17:50.:17:54.

to pieces at the end of the day. But the first person what I saw one I

:17:55.:18:03.

got to the studio was Pharrell. He asked how I was, and I burst into

:18:04.:18:11.

tears. I sat on one of the steps in the courtyard and he was on his

:18:12.:18:14.

haunches, talking me through. Anyway, out of a really embarrassing

:18:15.:18:19.

moment, he wrote the most positive song on my album, because I was

:18:20.:18:26.

going to cancel. Let's have a listen.

:18:27.:18:35.

I was gonna cancel, but then you reminded me of who I am.

:18:36.:18:41.

# Everything is clearer than a mirror.

:18:42.:19:06.

What is that move called? Who knows? You have got the classic Kylie

:19:07.:19:17.

sound, and also the new Kylie. It is funny. Pharrell is Mr cool, but it

:19:18.:19:21.

is one of the most poppy songs on the album. Even our parents now know

:19:22.:19:27.

who Pharrell is. Everything he touches turns to gold and extends

:19:28.:19:31.

across lots of genres. What is he like to work with? He was very

:19:32.:19:37.

cool, while dealing with an emotional woman in the studio.

:19:38.:19:41.

Probably not the first time he has done that, but he was really cool

:19:42.:19:46.

and created the song there and then. It was wrapped up in a day. He was

:19:47.:19:50.

on his synthesiser, creating the sounds and putting it together.

:19:51.:19:56.

Wrote it, I sang it, done. You are so good at reinventing your sound.

:19:57.:20:01.

So do you know when that is right? There are times when you don't want

:20:02.:20:06.

to jinx it, but there are times when you definitely have a feeling.

:20:07.:20:12.

Although I did not have distance on that day in the studio, I still felt

:20:13.:20:15.

incredibly embarrassed about falling to pieces. But I did think the song

:20:16.:20:22.

sounded good. And there is good and bad news. Good news, you are going

:20:23.:20:26.

on tour with your new album. At the bad news is that we lose you from

:20:27.:20:32.

The Voice. We have also heard rumours that will.i.am is off. Can

:20:33.:20:38.

you confirm or deny? I don't know. I have no idea. I thought he wanted to

:20:39.:20:44.

come back. He heard that song, I Was Gonna Cancel, and changed his mind.

:20:45.:20:50.

Quickly, Kylie - The Musical. We hear rumours about that. One day, it

:20:51.:20:56.

is going to happen. It takes a long time. It is about getting the book

:20:57.:21:01.

right. And the longer it takes, the more songs I have to go in the

:21:02.:21:04.

musical, so maybe it is not about thing. Is it the story of your

:21:05.:21:09.

life, or is it a story using your songs? We are just deciding which

:21:10.:21:17.

way to go. A story of my life seems strange to me, but we could do that,

:21:18.:21:20.

or more of a Mamma Mia thing, where your songs illustrate a good story.

:21:21.:21:26.

And you would have to cast yourself, which would be strange. Are you

:21:27.:21:31.

free? I would love to, but I would spoil it. Get a permed blonde wig. I

:21:32.:21:38.

could give it a go. Do the Eurovision next year with a

:21:39.:21:42.

beard. Anyway, last month, for the first time in history, the houses of

:21:43.:21:46.

element were used for the set of a film. Suffragette tells the tale of

:21:47.:21:50.

struggle for women get the vote, a fight that sort the tactics from

:21:51.:21:59.

move from martial arts to demonstrations. Here to tell us

:22:00.:22:04.

about it is Honor Blackman. My role as karate chopping, man

:22:05.:22:07.

throwing Cathy Gale in the avengers broke down areas of male physical

:22:08.:22:12.

supremacy over women on television. Never before had a woman being

:22:13.:22:16.

portrayed as someone who could hold her own in a fight against a man. My

:22:17.:22:20.

capers caught the eye of the producers of Goldfinger, we then had

:22:21.:22:23.

the script rewritten to include martial arts, and I even wrote a

:22:24.:22:29.

book on self-defence. Luckily, I have never had to defend myself in

:22:30.:22:34.

real life. Although, of course, I know I could if I had to. But for

:22:35.:22:40.

one group of women in history, it became an absolute necessity. In the

:22:41.:22:45.

first head of the 20th century, women were fighting for the right to

:22:46.:22:49.

vote. The suffragettes, as they became known, were growing in

:22:50.:22:53.

number. The movement decided they needed to defend themselves from the

:22:54.:22:56.

police, who they saw as an aggressive enemy. One woman was of

:22:57.:23:01.

stick in importance in this change of tactics. Her name was Edith

:23:02.:23:06.

Garratt, a teacher of the Japanese martial art, jujitsu. In 1909, Edith

:23:07.:23:12.

taught here in Golden Square, London, with her husband. So how did

:23:13.:23:19.

Edith, only for four to 11 in height, become such a key person in

:23:20.:23:24.

the fight for women's rights? Dr and Myleene Godfrey is a historian who

:23:25.:23:27.

has researched the life of Edith Garratt. In 1909, they were invited

:23:28.:23:33.

by Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes to give a

:23:34.:23:35.

presentation. Everybody loved it. They said, and you become more

:23:36.:23:40.

involved with us? I can't think that I would ever have enabled to do

:23:41.:23:46.

battle with a long dress on. Black leather was more to the point.

:23:47.:23:50.

Within three years, Edith was at the heart of the suffragettes' plans to

:23:51.:23:56.

resist police authority on including training an elite group of women to

:23:57.:24:00.

guard Emmeline Pankhurst. Edith and jujitsu became synonymous with the

:24:01.:24:03.

suffragette movement. One magazine even coined the phrase jujitsu

:24:04.:24:09.

suffragettes, calling them a new terror for the London police. And on

:24:10.:24:17.

the 1st of March 19 12, suffragettes met for one of their most audacious

:24:18.:24:21.

protests yet. They were angry that shopkeepers who were supposed to be

:24:22.:24:24.

loyal to them were not supporting the cause. There would be ladies

:24:25.:24:29.

walking across the street by the shops innocently looking at the

:24:30.:24:32.

windows, and then suddenly they would whip out items such as this

:24:33.:24:37.

hammer. This is a toffee hammer, which is small. But it is weighty.

:24:38.:24:42.

They would whip it out, smash a window and ran off. The suffragettes

:24:43.:24:46.

escaped to Edith Garratt 's dodo, where she provided them with a

:24:47.:24:52.

refuge. They would put their items under the floorboards, get changed

:24:53.:24:56.

for a jujitsu lesson, and then the police would come knocking on the

:24:57.:24:59.

door and Edith would say, this is very un-chivalrous of you, to come

:25:00.:25:04.

in and interrupted ladies' jujitsu session. We are having a class, I

:25:05.:25:09.

don't know anything about it. It was unusual for a woman like me in the

:25:10.:25:14.

1960s to learn a martial art. At the beginning of the last century, it

:25:15.:25:18.

was even more so. So Blevins and Jenny Cooper are Edith Garratt's and

:25:19.:25:22.

daughters. She could be quite domineering, but then when you are a

:25:23.:25:28.

suffragette... She could be very bossy. We knew she was a

:25:29.:25:35.

suffragette. We knew these -- she threw a policeman over her shoulder,

:25:36.:25:38.

but other than that, she was just now no. Did she practice anything

:25:39.:25:42.

new? She held my hand really tight and I had to all her thumb back to

:25:43.:25:51.

get her hand of me. So how difficult was it for a woman less than five

:25:52.:25:54.

feet in height, dressed in a full-length skirt and wearing a hat,

:25:55.:25:58.

to defend herself against a burly Edwardian policeman? She was able to

:25:59.:26:09.

use the force of her opponent to throw him and demonstrate how a

:26:10.:26:11.

small person can beat a larger person. Can you imagine your grandma

:26:12.:26:20.

doing that? Edith Garratt was small in stature, but she was a big figure

:26:21.:26:26.

in the suffragette movement. And she proved that women can defend

:26:27.:26:34.

themselves just as well as any man. She is feisty. This is what Mary

:26:35.:26:39.

looks like without the period costume on. I am about to

:26:40.:26:47.

demonstrate. Ready? There he is, on the floor. Kylie, come over. Could

:26:48.:26:57.

you take anybody down? Within reason, yes. How popular is jujitsu

:26:58.:27:01.

with women? It is fantastically popular. As the suffragettes found,

:27:02.:27:06.

it is great for small women to empower themselves. It is the same

:27:07.:27:14.

today. I am as tall as Kylie, and I do OK. Brilliant for self-defence.

:27:15.:27:20.

Can I do it in high heels? Absolutely. Let's see that one more

:27:21.:27:26.

time. We did not quite get it the first time. This is the technique

:27:27.:27:32.

Edith used in an interview when she was 94. What am I doing, punching

:27:33.:27:38.

again? You are going to punch. That was quick! And he is down. Mary,

:27:39.:27:51.

thank you very much. Earlier, we asked for your photos in honour of

:27:52.:27:56.

Eurovision winner Conchita. We have been inundated. You are brilliant at

:27:57.:28:00.

home for doing this. This is Holly and Daisy, from East Grinstead. They

:28:01.:28:10.

look very glamorous. Look at Becky, with a knitted beard. Shias 11. --

:28:11.:28:19.

she is 11. And Victoria Winter, from Folkestone. A group of them,

:28:20.:28:24.

actually. It has really captured the imagination, this one. What do you

:28:25.:28:31.

think of this one? Yvonne Green from Keswick, Cumbria. And this one is

:28:32.:28:40.

amazing. Paula and her friends from Northampton. All six of them with a

:28:41.:28:45.

Conchita beard. That is it from us this evening. Huge thanks to Kylie.

:28:46.:28:49.

Her new single is out today, but thee. Pleased you didn't. Tomorrow,

:28:50.:28:55.

talk-show titan Jay Leno is our guest. See you then.

:28:56.:28:59.
