No problem, but it's been murder on the M1. | :00:07. | :00:12.
Hello and a welcome to the last One Show of the year with Alex | :00:13. | :00:39.
Even though it is a Friday! What an arrival this is! Thank you very | :00:40. | :01:08.
much. And there is a reason for all of this. | :01:09. | :01:10.
We're arriving in style tonight, because our guests | :01:11. | :01:12.
are from the brand new Russian epic War and Peace, coming | :01:13. | :01:15.
One of them you might know as Downton's sweet and fashionable | :01:16. | :01:19.
Lady Rose, who recently also starred as Cinderella. | :01:20. | :01:21.
The other played a very bad boy in Happy Valley and very good | :01:22. | :01:24.
Please welcome War and Peace's Lily James and James Norton. | :01:25. | :01:28.
Merry Christmas! What have you got planned for the show? Just kidding! | :01:29. | :01:48.
The arrival and the wintry surroundings, does it remind you of | :01:49. | :01:53.
Russia? It does. The snow is a bit colder. I shouldn't say this is fake | :01:54. | :01:59.
snow, should I? Did you have a snow machine onset? Did it make real | :02:00. | :02:05.
snow? We had real snow at the start when we were first filming, and then | :02:06. | :02:09.
it melted. In one scene we were endeavouring to sled through the | :02:10. | :02:13.
snow, but it was mad, so in a very British way we carried on, but we | :02:14. | :02:19.
had to reshoot with what felt like parmesan. Sliding through cheese! We | :02:20. | :02:27.
look forward to hearing all about it during the show. | :02:28. | :02:30.
Tonight find out what happened when our house chef took mince pies | :02:31. | :02:33.
Have Ricky's treats "stollen" their hearts? | :02:34. | :02:41.
And we'll be going behind the scenes at a school nativity. | :02:42. | :02:53.
Well, if it's audience participation we're doing tonight, | :02:54. | :02:57.
# On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me. | :02:58. | :03:02.
Today I've come to see if the people here know the words. Do you know the | :03:03. | :03:18.
words to 12 days of Christmas? # On the eighth day of Christmas, my | :03:19. | :03:26.
true love sent to me. Four calling birds. Do you know 12 days of | :03:27. | :03:34.
Christmas? # On the ninth day of Christmas my | :03:35. | :03:45.
true love centimetre... ? Nine? On the first day of Christmas, my true | :03:46. | :03:50.
love sent to me, a partridge in a pear tree. | :03:51. | :03:56.
# Two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree. I will be famous now! | :03:57. | :04:07.
# Three French hens, two turtledoves and a partridge in a poetry. | :04:08. | :04:14.
# On the 12th day of Christmas, my true love sent to me... | :04:15. | :04:21.
# 12 drummers drumming # 11 pipers piping | :04:22. | :04:26.
# Ten lords leaping # Nine ladies dancing | :04:27. | :04:32.
# Eight maids milking # Seven swans swimming | :04:33. | :04:35.
# Six geese laying # Five gold rings | :04:36. | :04:40.
# Four calling birds # Three French hens | :04:41. | :04:44.
# Two turtledoves # And a partridge in a pear tree! | :04:45. | :04:54.
APPLAUSE Everybody knows five gold rings, | :04:55. | :04:56.
because it is the big one! War and Peace is widely known | :04:57. | :05:01.
as the novel that no Lily you read between takes | :05:02. | :05:03.
on Downton, didn't you? How long did it take you? It took me | :05:04. | :05:13.
a long while, but I knew I had the part for quite a long time, so I had | :05:14. | :05:21.
the time to read it. So you accepted the role before you read the book? | :05:22. | :05:29.
Yes. The book really is a masterpiece, and it is amazing that | :05:30. | :05:33.
it is easy to read. The first 50 pages aren't. You get stuck. The | :05:34. | :05:39.
first paragraph is in French, and then he introduces 20 characters in | :05:40. | :05:43.
three pages, so most people give up. But once you get over that hurdle, | :05:44. | :05:48.
we described it as a soap opera, because it is just loads of | :05:49. | :05:51.
characters. We have seen how you got hold of your copy. Here it is. This | :05:52. | :06:02.
is Happy Valley! That's ideal. Did you keep that copy? Actually, that | :06:03. | :06:07.
copy crops up in the second series, as well. Which we have just filmed. | :06:08. | :06:10.
There is a weird symbiosis. Now, while James and Lily have read | :06:11. | :06:19.
all half a million words, many have tried and failed to make | :06:20. | :06:22.
it to the end of War and Peace. So we asked our resident Russian | :06:23. | :06:26.
and friend of the show, Here's Yevgeny's War | :06:27. | :06:28.
and Peace in two minutes. It is July 1805, and old Saint | :06:29. | :06:55.
Petersburg feared the advance of Napoleon. The socially awkward | :06:56. | :06:59.
Pierre is introduced to Russian society. Two brilliant young Prince | :07:00. | :07:08.
Andre who declares, you will join the Army. Leave your pregnant wife | :07:09. | :07:13.
if you will, Pierre says, but I shall eat and drink for Russia. That | :07:14. | :07:20.
will be my duty for the motherland. And the beautiful Natasha IS up | :07:21. | :07:27.
potential husbands, knowing that men might soon become rather scarce. War | :07:28. | :07:37.
proves more terrible than Prince Andrei expected, dreams as well as | :07:38. | :07:47.
men died. I embrace it, Prince Andrei murmurs. A few years later, | :07:48. | :07:54.
Pierre marries Helen. He almost killed her lover in a duel when she | :07:55. | :07:58.
cheats on him. Then he has an existential meltdown. Andrei begs | :07:59. | :08:10.
Natasha to marry him. But her father is making them wait for a year, and | :08:11. | :08:16.
she is bound to have fallen for the womanising by then. By 1812, Pierre | :08:17. | :08:21.
is beside himself when Napoleon invaded again, and he vows to kill | :08:22. | :08:26.
him. As the Andrei, he is injured yet again on the front line, and | :08:27. | :08:33.
taken to Moscow wounded. Will love taking to Natasha? Will Pierre kill | :08:34. | :08:40.
Napoleon? I won't ruin the ending for you. But through battlefields | :08:41. | :08:49.
and ballrooms, births and deaths, a young hero will confront life's | :08:50. | :08:56.
great question of love and destiny, war and peace. | :08:57. | :09:00.
APPLAUSE He will now go down in history in so | :09:01. | :09:16.
many literature lessons! Lily, you didn't have to read it. I | :09:17. | :09:22.
wouldn't have, if I had known! Your character is dead that and all the | :09:23. | :09:25.
men fall for her. What is it about her? I think she is just so open, | :09:26. | :09:34.
ha-ha is beating and she's really genuine, hopeless romantic. She's | :09:35. | :09:40.
just a breath of fresh air, and that's really infectious. And you | :09:41. | :09:47.
start playing her at 13, and then make that transition all the way up | :09:48. | :09:50.
into adult life, so you really get to know her at every stage. You see | :09:51. | :09:56.
her grow, and you see how that open spirit is taken advantage of, and | :09:57. | :10:01.
how that longing for love leads her into allsorts of trouble and | :10:02. | :10:06.
heartache. And James, Prince Andrei is a tortured soul. It is heavy | :10:07. | :10:11.
stuff. Was not quite difficult to you to play the whole time? That | :10:12. | :10:21.
Darkside? Yes, he is really fed up. Fed up with the Russian winter! | :10:22. | :10:29.
There is a lot going on in Prince Andrei. It is a big challenge. A | :10:30. | :10:38.
year one of these method actors who goes in and out of character? Very | :10:39. | :10:49.
grumpy! The director was always telling him not to smile. That was | :10:50. | :10:52.
my most regular direction from the director, stop smiling! And let's | :10:53. | :10:58.
see James as Prince Andrei desperate to get into battle. | :10:59. | :11:03.
Your Grace, a request permission to join the action. It is 7000 men | :11:04. | :11:10.
against 40 5000. If one quarter of them come back tomorrow, I will | :11:11. | :11:19.
thank God. -- 40 5000. That is why I am asking to be one of them. Death | :11:20. | :11:30.
or glory? I won't stop you. How did those locations, Russia, Latvia, | :11:31. | :11:35.
help you? They were magical. There was one particular moment where Lily | :11:36. | :11:40.
and I were waltzing in Catherine the great's summer Palace, and this huge | :11:41. | :11:48.
ballroom. Your eyes were blinded because it was so shiny in the | :11:49. | :11:51.
candlelight and the mirrors. It was a blur like falling in love, it was | :11:52. | :11:58.
amazing. What a lovely phrase! With Whitney Houston! Are privileged to | :11:59. | :12:05.
spend six months filming in these beautiful places with an amazing | :12:06. | :12:06.
cast. It's quite a cast- | :12:07. | :12:11.
Gillian Anderson, Ade Edmonson, James you described it as a bit | :12:12. | :12:13.
like being on a trip We had a little karaoke, Lily gave | :12:14. | :12:25.
us her best Bohemian Rhapsody. St Petersburg was a lot of fun because | :12:26. | :12:29.
we were all out at the same time and staying in the same hotel, we were | :12:30. | :12:32.
all very overexcited because it is such a special place. The 3rd of | :12:33. | :12:39.
January, it starts, BBC One, nine o'clock. Thinking ahead to Downton, | :12:40. | :12:44.
the Christmas bash, your character went away, got married, so are you | :12:45. | :12:47.
going to be watching yourself on Christmas Day? Yes. I might save it | :12:48. | :12:55.
for Boxing Day, but I'm so excited about it, it is a wonderful ending. | :12:56. | :13:03.
So Roses back? Iamb back. Too late now! | :13:04. | :13:06.
Everybody will be pleased. It's been 16 degrees in some places | :13:07. | :13:10.
this week before Christmas, so quite fitting that the Vaynor | :13:11. | :13:12.
First School featured sunbathing Australian surfers | :13:13. | :13:15.
in their nativity. The characters are getting | :13:16. | :13:18.
stranger each year - here's our Michael Douglas meeting | :13:19. | :13:21.
the nativity cat of County Down. # Snow is falling | :13:22. | :13:31.
# All around us # Children playing | :13:32. | :13:38.
# Having fun. I have had to help out with the | :13:39. | :13:42.
festive weather, but these kids are the real deal. I am here to help | :13:43. | :13:46.
them get ready for their Christmas nativity. | :13:47. | :13:53.
First, let's check that everyone's here. Halep! How many sheep have we | :13:54. | :13:58.
got? How many kings? How many shepherds? | :13:59. | :14:12.
You are a donkey? I'm a camel! Have we got Joseph in the room? Stand up | :14:13. | :14:17.
and let's have a look at you. What a great outfit. Who has made it? Did | :14:18. | :14:25.
your mum make it? Shop. But I'm here to cut hair, and first | :14:26. | :14:31.
up is the director, class one's teacher Mrs Matheson. We had aliens | :14:32. | :14:39.
last year. Christmas of the aliens. Do you see a change in some kids | :14:40. | :14:43.
after they have been through the process of putting on a performance? | :14:44. | :14:47.
Children that you didn't expect to be as confident or as outgoing | :14:48. | :14:54.
actually when they are given an outlet to actually perform, they can | :14:55. | :14:58.
surprise you. And I've also got a surprise for Mrs Matheson. How's | :14:59. | :15:07.
that? I love it. Perfect, thank you. This is called the landlord's cat. | :15:08. | :15:17.
The title role is Lily, she has help from her mum. What is missing? Ears! | :15:18. | :15:29.
I have never done catty is on such a little head, but we will give it a | :15:30. | :15:33.
go. I remember I played King once and I had to wear tights, it was | :15:34. | :15:43.
quite. Tights? We have backcombed your hair, we will give it some | :15:44. | :15:47.
padding and make some twists. You ready to take look at your cat ears? | :15:48. | :15:51.
What you think of that? A like it! As the actors make their way to the | :15:52. | :16:02.
stage, the parents take their seats, I've just got time to meet Siobhan. | :16:03. | :16:10.
Argue nervous -- are you nervous about Siobhan? I am nervous. They | :16:11. | :16:17.
are both wearing traditional Ghanaian shirts. He loves embracing | :16:18. | :16:25.
his African heritage. Yes, he does. His daddy is from Ghana, so we've | :16:26. | :16:31.
borrowed some of his performing shirts. Nice, OK. Wow! Frank you | :16:32. | :16:39.
very much. It's showtime and I've got a great | :16:40. | :16:48.
seat. # Our work is never-ending, there's | :16:49. | :16:56.
so much more to do # All day long it's knock knock | :16:57. | :17:00.
knock # Knock knock knock. | :17:01. | :17:06.
One winter all of the people born in Bethlehem were told to return, | :17:07. | :17:15.
everyone of them needed a place to stay. And every parent would agree, | :17:16. | :17:29.
they are all stars of the show. Even a cat can look at the King! | :17:30. | :17:33.
APPLAUSE I'm sure you will agree some | :17:34. | :17:41.
fantastic performances all round. It was wonderful. | :17:42. | :17:45.
Now our audience tonight isn't just feeling Christmassy, | :17:46. | :17:47.
All their surnames have something to do with Christmas. | :17:48. | :17:53.
Lily and James, see if you can guess what they are in our | :17:54. | :17:56.
This couple are named after something you normally | :17:57. | :18:07.
put your feet in, but at Christmas they're stuffed with | :18:08. | :18:09.
a mince pie, a glass of sherry and has lots of little helpers, | :18:10. | :18:25.
These three are named after an animal that has | :18:26. | :18:46.
a very shiny nose, and if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. | :18:47. | :18:50.
after something my true love sent to me on the first day of christmas. | :18:51. | :18:59.
Partridge. Partridge, very good. The Partridge family. | :19:00. | :19:05.
Christmas! You're not?! Merry Christmas to all our families, thank | :19:06. | :19:22.
you for taking part, isn't that lovely? We're going to drop in on | :19:23. | :19:27.
our neighbours at the All Souls Church next door for a spot of carol | :19:28. | :19:31.
singing. While we head over there, here's our chef Ricky doing his best | :19:32. | :19:37.
for Anglo-German relations through the medium of the mince pie. | :19:38. | :19:40.
Nothing smells like a Christmas market, that heady mix of blue vine | :19:41. | :19:50.
and sausage. We fallen for this continental import. Germany has more | :19:51. | :19:54.
than two and a half thousand festive markets, more than anywhere else in | :19:55. | :19:58.
Europe. Where better to experience one than here in Bavaria? Just | :19:59. | :20:04.
outside Munich, traditional and novelty yuletide streets. Like | :20:05. | :20:08.
gluhwein with a fiery twist. And waffles on the sticks. At | :20:09. | :20:24.
Christmas time lots of us love to dig into German delicacies like | :20:25. | :20:32.
these, but what British festive food will get a warm reception here? | :20:33. | :20:38.
Let's find out with our One Show wonderland of mince pies and | :20:39. | :20:42.
Christmas puddings. My competition is a chef selling his Bavarian | :20:43. | :20:50.
biscuits and stollen. The taste is good, we don't have it in Germany. | :20:51. | :20:55.
Nothing similar. Do you think I could sell more of this than you | :20:56. | :21:00.
could sell stollen? Never, never, stollen is traditional produce and | :21:01. | :21:05.
it's on every table in all of the land. Do you fancy a competition? | :21:06. | :21:10.
Let's do it. This is going to be tough. Martin has won prizes for his | :21:11. | :21:17.
stollen, filled with raisins, currents and marzipan. Will my | :21:18. | :21:21.
festive fair to go Bavarian taste buds? What is the name? Mince pies. | :21:22. | :21:34.
Inside alcohol? Alcohol, yes. Bavarian people prefer to drink the | :21:35. | :21:42.
alcohol and the British people eats alcohol. I might have stolen to map | :21:43. | :21:47.
of your customers, they like mince pies more value stollen. No! I think | :21:48. | :21:55.
I might have this in the bag. Do you prefer this or stollen? Stollen. | :21:56. | :22:04.
Stollen is better. I've looked up mince pies in German. I think now | :22:05. | :22:20.
I'm going to sell more. ,, and get your Hackfleischtorte. It must be | :22:21. | :22:26.
the accent. It's a nice taste, I like it. I think you can sell a lot | :22:27. | :22:31.
of it. Is it better than stollen? No. To start | :22:32. | :22:35.
I might resort to a couple of dirty tricks. Finally, some true converts. | :22:36. | :22:50.
Rather nice. Better than stollen? This is small so it's easy to beat. | :22:51. | :22:57.
You are a convert? Yes. Would you have it instead of stollen. Yes, I | :22:58. | :23:03.
think it's better. I would take mince pies. Seems mince pies might | :23:04. | :23:09.
have earned their place on the market. What will Bavarians make of | :23:10. | :23:13.
our Christmas puddings? The German one is a bit too dry, I like that | :23:14. | :23:15.
one. After a day of selling, time for the | :23:16. | :23:29.
verdict. Hello, Martin, half the people I gave my puddings and pies | :23:30. | :23:33.
to like mine as much as yours. No. Yes, definitely. In the spirit of | :23:34. | :23:38.
Christmas, we agreed to call it a draw. We might not be able to agree | :23:39. | :23:43.
on what to eat but we agree on what we drink, gluhwein. Cheers! Prost. | :23:44. | :23:52.
# Ding dong merrily on high In heav'n the bells are ringing | :23:53. | :23:55.
# Gloria Is riv'n with angel singing | :23:56. | :24:03.
APPLAUSE CHEERING | :24:04. | :24:26.
Thank you to All Souls Church for welcoming us back this year, | :24:27. | :24:29.
more carols on their way, in the interests of neighbourliness | :24:30. | :24:32.
Lily and James are handing out mince pies. | :24:33. | :24:33.
And I'm joined by some people who have been part | :24:34. | :24:39.
of the One Show family this year, Team Rickshaw. | :24:40. | :24:43.
APPLAUSE Team Rickshaw and... | :24:44. | :24:52.
And someone I met while Team Rickshaw were on the road | :24:53. | :24:55.
is Shaan Ali, who has benefitted from some of the money raised | :24:56. | :24:58.
by everyone who donated to Children in Need. | :24:59. | :25:01.
We've raised an awful lot of money, as you know. Yeah. A message for the | :25:02. | :25:10.
people at home who donated? Guys, a big, big, thank you. Without your | :25:11. | :25:16.
fundraising, without your donations, children in need wouldn't exist, all | :25:17. | :25:21.
of us wouldn't be helped and our lives are made much more better than | :25:22. | :25:26.
our children in need funded places. Just a big, big thank you. You are | :25:27. | :25:33.
fantastic. Nobody could have put it better than that. I know that you've | :25:34. | :25:39.
still been raising money since that incredible cycle ride we had, Team | :25:40. | :25:44.
Rickshaw. It was the other day, your birthday, you were telling me what | :25:45. | :25:46.
you were doing earlier, tell everybody at home. I went to Phantom | :25:47. | :25:54.
of the Opera with my family. And I also performed with the music trust, | :25:55. | :26:02.
I play the violin and we did many different songs. Katz, Swan Lake and | :26:03. | :26:10.
jingle Bells. The effort you put in was incredible. -- Cats. It really | :26:11. | :26:13.
was something. Now we didn't just bring | :26:14. | :26:16.
you here for an end of the year get together, we brought | :26:17. | :26:19.
you here because the amount of money you raised has gone up even more | :26:20. | :26:21.
since we announced it in November. I know how surprised we were on | :26:22. | :26:26.
children in need night. To everyone that has | :26:27. | :26:29.
donated and everyone who did their bit for this | :26:30. | :26:33.
year's rickshaw challenge we would like to announce | :26:34. | :26:36.
the challenge has raised an unexpected, life-changing, | :26:37. | :26:39.
overwhelming... APPLAUSE | :26:40. | :26:56.
That's it, this year's challenge. Over 4 million. | :26:57. | :27:04.
Reverend Hugh, charity brings together different | :27:05. | :27:06.
I think so. I was chatting before the show with Shaan and he told me | :27:07. | :27:20.
that charity giving is central to the Islamic faith and Christian | :27:21. | :27:24.
living. Something like children in need appeal is to humanity, I think, | :27:25. | :27:28.
that was a phenomenal total and I suspect the people who gave came | :27:29. | :27:33.
from all faiths and non-. It's at the heart of your Christmas message. | :27:34. | :27:38.
It is. We talk about charity beginning at home. We'll charity | :27:39. | :27:43.
probably begins with God, the generous good God highlighted at | :27:44. | :27:47.
Christmas. He looks and doesn't just see children in need but a world | :27:48. | :27:51.
with all kinds of needs and gives extravagantly. Not a check, but he | :27:52. | :27:56.
gives himself, Jesus. That is the heartbeat of Christian living. We | :27:57. | :28:02.
don't give so God will give to us, we give love because he first loved | :28:03. | :28:06.
us, that Christmas. Merry Christmas to you. Thank you for that message | :28:07. | :28:11.
and thank you to everybody, that's all we've got time for. Have a | :28:12. | :28:15.
wonderful, wonderful Christmas, what a year it's been for us. Can you | :28:16. | :28:22.
believe it? Thanks to Lee and James. War Peace is on the BBC on the 1st | :28:23. | :28:29.
of January. And thank you to All Souls Church for having us this | :28:30. | :28:32.
evening. Everybody on your feet for a Herald Angels sing. | :28:33. | :28:35. |
