Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones.

:00:13.:00:15.

Tonight's guest is going to exclusively reveal

:00:16.:00:19.

the contenders for BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2015, so

:00:20.:00:22.

She once beat Princess Anne in a race, nearly knocking

:00:23.:00:30.

She beat Boris Becker in a game of tennis, playing with balloons

:00:31.:00:36.

APPLAUSE We got it! Got it! We'll get rid of it now because I don't

:00:37.:00:58.

like them either. I tried to smile for you. No doubt you are smiling

:00:59.:01:02.

because, a huge weekend of sport. The Davis Cup? I know. I cried at

:01:03.:01:07.

the closing montage because they showed all the matches and how hard

:01:08.:01:13.

they have fought to get there. James Ward beat Isner.

:01:14.:01:17.

Lots of people played their part, of course, but I don't think I've ever

:01:18.:01:23.

seen Andy Murray happier. He plays his best tennis when playing for the

:01:24.:01:27.

British team. He was emotional, that's why we were. So animated.

:01:28.:01:31.

Great. That's the World Cup of tennis and Britain have won it.

:01:32.:01:35.

First time in 79 years. There we are, cause for celebration.

:01:36.:01:51.

APPLAUSE We have the No Idea of the Year

:01:52.:01:58.

awards. If someone in your family has the kit and enthusiasm but a

:01:59.:02:03.

distinct lack of skill, dad likes fishing but doesn't have the kit,

:02:04.:02:12.

send us a picture of them all dressed up and we'll hold the awards

:02:13.:02:14.

later. This week MPs are expected to

:02:15.:02:16.

vote on whether British forces should start bombing Islamic

:02:17.:02:19.

State targets in Syria. David Cameron says air

:02:20.:02:21.

strikes will make us safer. Labour is officially opposed to

:02:22.:02:24.

bombing but its MPs will be allowed We asked four people whose lives

:02:25.:02:26.

have been touched by events My son was the first Brit to die

:02:27.:02:53.

fighting against Isis. I don't hate Isis. I think that's for people in

:02:54.:02:59.

Syria to do. But I do think that they are a dreadful, dreadful,

:03:00.:03:02.

dreadful scourge and they need wiping out.

:03:03.:03:07.

I believe that Britain should be joining its allies in bombing Syria.

:03:08.:03:17.

I'm Hisham, a Syrian activist. I have official status in England for

:03:18.:03:21.

five years because I'm on a hit-list of the Assad regime. Bombing Isil is

:03:22.:03:33.

not the solution. We cannot decide to strike them only. 95% of the

:03:34.:03:38.

Syrian population who've been killed it was because of the Assad regime

:03:39.:03:44.

bombs, not only off Isil. I'm Patrick. I used to be an infantry

:03:45.:03:50.

officer in the British Army, served in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

:03:51.:03:58.

There is an air of unreality about the debate. There is no thick black

:03:59.:04:01.

line on the desert border between Iraq and Syria. Isis don't recognise

:04:02.:04:06.

the border between Iraq and Syria and our Alis are bombing in both

:04:07.:04:11.

Iraq and Syria, so from a military perspective, it is absolute nonsense

:04:12.:04:15.

to have RAF planes that can fly up to an imaginary point but not beyond

:04:16.:04:21.

it. I'm Kadira, I live in Brighton. I own a charity shop. I have a son

:04:22.:04:27.

Ibrahim. He went there and he died in Syria because of the American

:04:28.:04:34.

bombing. All you saw on the news is Jihadi fanatic, this and that,

:04:35.:04:38.

that's all you can see. I'm one of the victims because I lost my son

:04:39.:04:44.

because of this Syria thing. If you go bomb, is the bomb going to pick

:04:45.:04:50.

the Isis among the people - no. Who're the ones that are going to be

:04:51.:04:57.

bombed - the innocent civilians, women, children, vulnerable people.

:04:58.:05:03.

The system is vulnerable and sadly there'll be mistakes, but you have

:05:04.:05:07.

highly trained teams targeting specific buildings, vehicles, and

:05:08.:05:11.

you are able to do that with a high degree of accuracy. Our inactivity

:05:12.:05:16.

and our apathy up to this point have meant that Isis have spread and

:05:17.:05:21.

Russia's had an opportunity to step in. Actually, we've lost face and

:05:22.:05:26.

we've lost an opportunity to really be players in that area. This

:05:27.:05:32.

bombing thing, I'm sick and tired of it. I came from a war zone. I know

:05:33.:05:38.

how it feels. They have got no idea. They have no idea what is war, as

:05:39.:05:44.

long as you are taking innocent lives, I don't care who you are, you

:05:45.:05:47.

are no better than the terrorists, you are no better than the suicide

:05:48.:05:51.

bombers, you've all got human blood, innocent blood on your hands. If you

:05:52.:05:56.

lose a loved one, you will never ever see them again, that's it. If

:05:57.:06:02.

you keep Assad, nothing will change and things will be more complicated.

:06:03.:06:10.

I think from the beginning of the revolution started, people went

:06:11.:06:12.

peacefully and asked for him to leave. So basically, he needs to

:06:13.:06:18.

leave. When your allies are calling for your assistance, when you are

:06:19.:06:22.

trying to have some sort of moral stance to say, look, this is what we

:06:23.:06:25.

won't stand for in the global community, it's wrong not to

:06:26.:06:28.

contribute. Do I believe that we should have

:06:29.:06:31.

boots on the ground - no, absolutely not. The worst thing for Isis would

:06:32.:06:37.

be for us to start working together and living together and being

:06:38.:06:40.

friends together and supporting each other. They want to see divisions

:06:41.:06:45.

and they want to see armies because then they can say their prophecy is

:06:46.:06:49.

about the -- prophecies about the end of the world are coming true.

:06:50.:06:51.

Let's not play their games. Thanks you to Vasiliki, Hishan,

:06:52.:06:54.

Patrick and Kadijah Lovely to see you. Can you clarify

:06:55.:07:05.

for us what the Prime Minister is proposing then and what he hopes

:07:06.:07:09.

will be the end aim at the end of all this? Sure, he's been shown

:07:10.:07:16.

intelligence by MI6 and other agencies which has convinced him

:07:17.:07:19.

that some of the attacks, the big attacks we have been seeing like the

:07:20.:07:24.

ones in Paris and elsewhere, are being directed by a hard core of

:07:25.:07:30.

leadership in Syria, belonging to so-called Islamic state. Currently

:07:31.:07:34.

Parliament's given permission for RAF planes to hit IS targets only on

:07:35.:07:39.

the Iraqi side of the border, so the Government is saying this is

:07:40.:07:42.

ludicrous, they can cross the border as much as they like, but the RAF

:07:43.:07:49.

has to stop short of the border. He wants Parliamentary authority to be

:07:50.:07:53.

able to hit them, alongside the existing Air Forces that are already

:07:54.:07:56.

doing it, the Americans, French, Australians and now the Russians.

:07:57.:08:00.

Realistically, are they still there? We have seen attacks all over the

:08:01.:08:04.

world, if they know that they are coming, they are obviously going to

:08:05.:08:07.

be watching the news and know these decisions are going to be made, are

:08:08.:08:11.

they going to be there? It's interesting you say that, because in

:08:12.:08:15.

the last few days, the French and Russians have intensified their

:08:16.:08:19.

attacks on suspected IS positions in and around Raqqa, and what we are

:08:20.:08:23.

hearing from people inside Raqqa, civilians, they are saying that IS

:08:24.:08:28.

soldiers are taking off the uniforms and disguising themselves as

:08:29.:08:31.

civilian, trying to embed themselves even more into the population. Now,

:08:32.:08:36.

the Government's argument is that the RAF have this very accurate

:08:37.:08:41.

missile called the Brimstone, although it has a nasty contagion,

:08:42.:08:48.

with the word accurate being in it, it means this thing can be targeted

:08:49.:08:53.

to go right through the roof of a car and hit someone planning a

:08:54.:08:57.

Bataclan-style massacre like in Paris. That is their argument. The

:08:58.:09:06.

argument against is our own safety and surely, top of the list if we go

:09:07.:09:09.

in and bomb, does that make us more of a target? I think in the

:09:10.:09:13.

short-term yes it probably does. People will be saying no, but I

:09:14.:09:17.

think it does, because the very public debate about this means this

:09:18.:09:22.

will have been noticed, IS are not stupid, they watch the news, the

:09:23.:09:25.

media, they'll be downloading clips from Parliament and putting into

:09:26.:09:33.

their next pop began Da video. They'll want to carry out an attack

:09:34.:09:37.

to embarrass Cameron. Britain is already a target for them -- --

:09:38.:09:43.

propaganda video. They are already at war with us and linked to seven

:09:44.:09:48.

of the plots in the last year that have been thwarted. I think they'll

:09:49.:09:54.

intensify their attempts. In the long-term, it's possible that

:09:55.:10:01.

British inclusion in the actions may ultimately degrade or reduce their

:10:02.:10:04.

ability to plan these things in the way that the Americans have done in

:10:05.:10:08.

Pakistan, that they have kept their leaders on the run continually, that

:10:09.:10:12.

they weren't able to plan any other big attacks, but it's a really messy

:10:13.:10:16.

business. There's a map, by the way, let's have a look at this, this is

:10:17.:10:21.

Syria. It's meant to be complicated by the way, this map. Oh, this is

:10:22.:10:26.

the simplified version. This gives you some idea of all the different

:10:27.:10:30.

groups counterly fighting each other in some cases across Syria. So just

:10:31.:10:36.

briefly, yellow is IS, pink up the top is the Kurds and right down the

:10:37.:10:43.

bottom left in the dark green is the government. It's very complicated,

:10:44.:10:47.

which is why a lot of people are saying, we shouldn't get involved,

:10:48.:10:51.

let them sort it out themselves, others are saying we shouldn't leave

:10:52.:10:54.

it up to others to keep Britain safer in the long-term.

:10:55.:10:58.

Frank, thank you for trying to simplify it for us, thank you. Thank

:10:59.:11:00.

you very much. Today is apparently Cyber Monday,

:11:01.:11:02.

which means there are lots of discounts to be had if you

:11:03.:11:04.

like to do your shopping online. But there's

:11:05.:11:08.

at least one man who thinks that His name is Lenny Sellick, and

:11:09.:11:10.

this is Lenny Versus the Internet. Never mind Black Friday or Cribber

:11:11.:11:28.

Monday, bargains are here! 79-year-old Lenny's had a stall for

:11:29.:11:34.

over 40 years on the market. Got to knock it out for one reason or two

:11:35.:11:40.

reasons... Despite the massive rise in online retail, he firmly believes

:11:41.:11:43.

the market is the ultimate shopping experience. Anybody still there...

:11:44.:11:48.

?2 each. What are you offering me? ?1. ?1.99. What about if I can find

:11:49.:11:55.

one of these cheaper on the Internet? You can't. I'll put that

:11:56.:11:59.

to the test. I'm convinced. We have one. A cushion cover? We have a

:12:00.:12:08.

cushion cover for ?1.75. Hang on, plus ?1. 20 delivery. That's what I

:12:09.:12:13.

meant to say about that, they sort of say the price is ?10, then in the

:12:14.:12:17.

small print it's a fiver to post it. ?15, I don't care what they say.

:12:18.:12:24.

So why should people ditch online and get down to the market? Because

:12:25.:12:30.

of the bargains, because of the atmosphere. There is no atmosphere

:12:31.:12:33.

on a laptop, is there? There just isn't. They are lonely and bless

:12:34.:12:39.

'em, you don't have to wait ten days and get a neighbour to take a parcel

:12:40.:12:43.

in. Whatever you buy online could be rubbish, you don't know until you

:12:44.:12:46.

get it, at least you know what you get here. The convenience, the

:12:47.:12:55.

Fehily, the touchy, try it on. I'm surprised women can buy anything

:12:56.:12:58.

online because they all go like that with the material, don't they, you

:12:59.:13:05.

know, here you are, look. Lenny is convinced the market is definitely

:13:06.:13:08.

better than shopping online, but what do the shoppers think? Nothing

:13:09.:13:12.

beats coming down the market. We have our breakfast down here, then

:13:13.:13:18.

go and have an Earl Grey, it's a Saturday ritual. I love to walk

:13:19.:13:22.

around, have a look and have a talk with the ladies and gentlemen down

:13:23.:13:26.

here in the market. I do shopping online but sometimes I come down

:13:27.:13:30.

here, you really get good deals here actually. You get bargains, I've

:13:31.:13:35.

bought a lovely jacket. What is the best way to get a good deal at this

:13:36.:13:40.

market? Haggle, haggle, haggle, every time. Is this White Saturday?

:13:41.:13:48.

Yes. Are all these dresses for ?1? Yes. Bargain. Try it on, I could do

:13:49.:13:56.

with a laugh! You would get run over on a zebra

:13:57.:14:01.

crossing with that on. I'm 71 now, I've been coming here since I was

:14:02.:14:05.

ten. It was a lot more stylish years ago.

:14:06.:14:10.

Plastic bag out to match your outfit. That's what you used to do.

:14:11.:14:22.

Black Friday was a fad. Maybe the Internet is a fad, I don't know. You

:14:23.:14:25.

have been here 45 years, do you think it will still be here in

:14:26.:14:31.

another 45 years? I've been hearing the death of markets, 30 years ago.

:14:32.:14:35.

There'll be certain people who'll always say that. I don't think so. I

:14:36.:14:39.

think the people come down here to enjoy, as much as the day out. And

:14:40.:14:44.

is that it, that human personal interaction? Absolutely. That's why

:14:45.:14:51.

I'm still doing it and will carry on doing it until I can't. I don't feel

:14:52.:14:54.

well... LAUGHTER

:14:55.:14:59.

I'm the same, I like to see and touch it. It's part of the shopping

:15:00.:15:09.

experience. No doubt about it. We are going to reveal the Sports

:15:10.:15:13.

Personality Of The Year nominees shortly. First, we are going to

:15:14.:15:19.

celebrate a huge personality from the world of rugby, Jonah Lomu. You

:15:20.:15:24.

interviewed him? I interviewed him a view times. There aren't many people

:15:25.:15:28.

that change the face of their sport, and changed completely. He did. He

:15:29.:15:37.

was such a gentle giant. A quietly spoken, lovely, kind man. Very wise,

:15:38.:15:43.

as well. He had had a kidney transplant already? He had been a

:15:44.:15:47.

very sick man, before the World Cup, when he made such an impact, he was

:15:48.:15:52.

sick and did not want to tell them. Unbelievable, that he played right

:15:53.:15:57.

through? Yes, and it's a real loss. I really feel for his family, his

:15:58.:16:02.

fans, for New Zealand. I think the whole rugby union world will really

:16:03.:16:06.

miss him. But they will never forget him. What a figure. A big night, it

:16:07.:16:13.

has been top secret for a long time, who the sports personalities are

:16:14.:16:17.

going to be, the contenders, the short list. They have all had their

:16:18.:16:20.

hands on gold at some point in their life. It brings us nicely onto the

:16:21.:16:23.

next film. And it's gold that the man

:16:24.:16:29.

in our next film is chasing too, For the last year, I have been

:16:30.:16:40.

hatching a plan to create a very personal and special piece of

:16:41.:16:43.

jewellery. I am designing an engagement ring for my girlfriend,

:16:44.:16:49.

Roberta, as I am about to propose to her. Let's hope she likes it.

:16:50.:16:53.

Fingers crossed she will say yes. I want to take my inspiration from

:16:54.:16:57.

Scotland. The first thing I'm going to need is some gold. Scottish gold

:16:58.:17:04.

is very pure. I am heading to Dumfries and Galloway to meet up

:17:05.:17:07.

with Leon Kirk, who has been collecting gold in these parts for

:17:08.:17:11.

nearly 20 years. I'm looking around here, it's not exactly the wild

:17:12.:17:17.

West. It it is not where people imagine you would find gold? It's

:17:18.:17:21.

amazing how many people have said in the past they can't believe that

:17:22.:17:25.

there is gold year. The highest purity and get is 24 carat gold,

:17:26.:17:30.

Scottish is about 20 or 22. For somebody to be wearing a ring of

:17:31.:17:34.

pure Scottish gold, it's very unusual and special. To find it, it

:17:35.:17:38.

is a case of sucking up the gravel from the stream and using a gentle

:17:39.:17:43.

method of tilting the pan to get rid of the water and heavier materials.

:17:44.:17:47.

There are special ridges to capture any gold. Your eyes play tricks on

:17:48.:17:54.

you, you get a flash and you think, there is one. But... No. You need

:17:55.:17:59.

permission and a special licence to look for gold. After a good

:18:00.:18:04.

half-hour of planning, my first lack of Scottish gold! During the next

:18:05.:18:09.

three hours, I need a bit more. Although it is small amounts, for

:18:10.:18:13.

what I'm looking to create, it is absolutely priceless. Leon is going

:18:14.:18:18.

to add to my hall, so I've got enough Scottish gold to make the

:18:19.:18:22.

ring. Next, I'm off to the east coast of Scotland, a place called

:18:23.:18:29.

Ruby Bay, to find a beautiful fiery red gem. These gemstones are not

:18:30.:18:36.

actually rubies. They are a garnet. They take their name from the Greek

:18:37.:18:42.

pyro, meaning the heart of the fire. They become displaced from the

:18:43.:18:45.

rocks during stormy weather. The best way to find them is to crawl

:18:46.:18:49.

around, slowly brushing sand away from side to side. There one! . She

:18:50.:18:57.

is a beauty. A really nice size. That would be large enough to set

:18:58.:19:03.

into a gold ring. After a couple of hours searching the beach, I have

:19:04.:19:06.

found enough for the engagement ring. The final gem I need to cover

:19:07.:19:12.

is smoky quartz. It's the national gemstone of Scotland, also known as

:19:13.:19:18.

Cairngorm. To find that, I just need to pop home. Home is a tree house. I

:19:19.:19:22.

built it ten years ago and lived here ever since. While doing some

:19:23.:19:26.

work around the house, I saw something glistening on the rock

:19:27.:19:30.

outside. I couldn't believe my luck. Sitting in this volcanic stone

:19:31.:19:37.

was a smoky quartz crystal. Cairngorm Crystal was often

:19:38.:19:40.

considered to be a talisman and many high land clans own such stones. It

:19:41.:19:47.

also happens to be her favourite gem. After a quick tour around

:19:48.:19:50.

Scotland, I have all the elements I need for my girlfriend's engagement

:19:51.:19:55.

ring. The next part of my journey takes me across the border to

:19:56.:20:00.

Birmingham, a city renowned for jewellery making. David Stokes, who

:20:01.:20:03.

works in computer graphic design, is able to take my sketch and create a

:20:04.:20:10.

3D image of the ring, adding Celtic patterns and place in the gems. We

:20:11.:20:13.

are going to drag them around, wherever we want it positioned. I

:20:14.:20:20.

wanted lower, so it's not using up too much gold. I wanted to be

:20:21.:20:24.

comfortable as well, if it sits high, it will get into the way.

:20:25.:20:30.

Next, a cast is made. The Scottish gold is melted down with a gold

:20:31.:20:34.

hatpin left to Roberta by her grandma. I hope she doesn't mind me

:20:35.:20:39.

doing this, because the diamond from it, with the other gems, is going to

:20:40.:20:43.

be set into the ring. I don't trust myself with the intricate work, so

:20:44.:20:47.

I've got George here and I'm going to leave it to the professional.

:20:48.:20:51.

Once the stones are set, it is given a final polish. There we have it.

:20:52.:20:56.

The engagement ring. A testament to the beauty of Scotland. Now all I

:20:57.:21:02.

need is a yes. I will let you know what she says.

:21:03.:21:06.

No pressure on any other man thinking of proposing! The lengths

:21:07.:21:13.

he went to, crawling around on his hands and knees on the beach. Wasn't

:21:14.:21:19.

that so romantic? Do we know, did she say yes? Well...

:21:20.:21:27.

Clare, to get you practicing for Sports Personality of the Year would

:21:28.:21:30.

you like to reveal what happened when Adam proposed to Roberta?

:21:31.:21:33.

My heart just stopped! Did she say yes or no? Or maybe? She said yes!

:21:34.:21:48.

Huge congratulations. It's going to be wonderful. You couldn't not,
