Semi-Final 1 Alesha's Street Dance Stars

We've swaggered into the semi-finals of Alesha's Street Dance Stars.

Three crews will today take to the stage hoping to book

a place in the final.

But which crew will have the moves and grooves to progress?

Will it be Shockarellas, from Manchester?

Wiked, from Kent?

Or the Minions, from Coventry?

Let's find out.

Hello, and welcome to Alesha's Street Dance Stars

and the first of our semi-finals.

We've really raised the stakes in today's show,

as each of our three crews will be performing twice.

They've all had to learn a brand new street dance routine,

plus a special performance

inspired by a dance style they're not used to.

The judges gave them this challenge to really test their dancing skills,

as each crew wants to take the next step to being crowned

Alesha's Street Dance Stars 2011, and take home this fantastic trophy.

Here are the people our crews need to impress.

Kenrick, with only nine crews left in the contest,

the standard is so high.

What do the semi-finalists need to do to stand out today?

They need to stand out - exactly what you say.

So this time round - I know I can speak for the judges -

we're not holding back.

The judges will be scoring on technique, choreography

and showmanship. And, as always, in the event of a tie,

head judge Kenrick will decide who goes through.

how nervous they must be feeling.

Jordan, why do you think street dance has become so popular?

Um...

Personally, I think because of shows like this.

It gives street dance a great platform to show what we do,

and because of that, more people want to get involved.

I agree. Perri, you've danced all over the world

in high-pressure situations. How do you keep your nerves in check?

I just get dressed, warm up, and as soon as I go on stage,

the crowd put so much adrenaline into you and you just feed off that.

Up first, the performance they've all been really nervous about,

as it incorporates a style of dance they're not used to.

Wow, I cannot wait to see the performances.

Our three resident judges are the kings and queen of street,

but today, they've asked for a bit of help from a rock'n'roll expert.

Hi, Bev. Nice to see you.

What do you want to see from our crews today?

Well, rock'n'roll is a high-energy dance,

so I'm looking for lots of energy, lots of bounce

and maybe the odd rock'n'roll acrobatic move would be impressive.

OK, thank you.

Now, backstage, Perri and Jordan caught up with our first crew

to find out how tough the rock'n'roll challenge has been.

It's our only all-girl crew today - Shockarellas!

You have the rock'n'roll challenge. It's not your genre of dance,

but how did you feel when you were given it?

We felt happy because it was a new different style and a challenge.

So how did you go about preparing?

Our dance teacher made us watch old videos of the style.

How were your rehearsals? Comical? Serious?

We only had a short amount of time,

so our rehearsals were very serious, but fun at the same time.

I like the way you incorporated the rock'n'roll in your sequence

and made sure you kept the street as well.

Wow, I was blown away, actually. That was awesome.

That was really good.

I thought you made a real effort with your costumes,

very rock'n'roll. I loved the acrobatic moves you put in,

I saw you do some rock steps, spins, your partner work was amazing.

You're a street-dance group.

How difficult are you finding the transition to rock'n'roll?

We're excited, cos rock'n'roll is similar to street dancing.

If we got ballet, it'd be completely different.

So it's been exciting but hard at the same time.

Has anyone experienced rock'n'roll?

None of us, but our choreographer has,

so we find we've got an advantage.

In all your performances till now,

you haven't used any flips or tricks.

Is it going to be the same for your rock'n'roll routine?

We still haven't used any tricks or flips,

but we've used some lifts,

so hopefully it'll be enough to win the specialist dance award.

you really pulled it out the bag, and considering it's not your style,

throughout their performance at the heats.

Swapping their swagger for swing is the Minions.

Guys, you've been given rock'n'roll.

Obviously it's not your element - how do you feel about it?

It's been challenging, but fun. And difficult.

Has it been hard making that transition?

You've got to get the beat-boy out of you and put the funk in.

Have you done any extra prep, any extra research for it?

Our choreographer made us

watch really random movies, like Grease and John Travolta.

It was just random!

You guys pulled it off.

Well, rock'n'roll's traditionally a partner dance, so I was looking

and not seeing any girls and I was wondering how you would pull it off.

But you actually did something really clever -

you took the essence of rock'n'roll and managed to make it your own.

The choreography was really good. Well done, guys.

I'm just amazed by the talent.

I'm really amazed at the level that these ladies are,

and just how talented they are.

You guys are all as strong as each other,

and I could see different styles from your last routine,

which was great.

As Kenrick said, you're very consistent, and I'm always

looking forward to seeing you guys and what you're going to bring next.

What's incredible is you guys come on stage very mature and strong.

Like, you guys are powerful on stage.

There was a little handstand bit that happened at the beginning

where your legs went one side and then all the way to the back,

and then they came back to the other side.

I was like, "OK, is that how you're going now?"

Your musicality is ridiculous as well.

Like, hitting accents on certain songs. Like...

You guys are coming here with some fire.

How do you think the performance went for yous?

It went really good for us, because I think we brought loads of energy

-and I think we really bonded together as a group.

-Cool.

Me and Jordan thought the comments from the judges were really good,

but what do you think?

I thought Turbo's and Kenrick's were really good, cos they said

we were consistent and they made us happy.

-Did it feel different in the semi-finals?

-A lot more pressure,

cos only one crew's going through this time instead of three.

Lizzie was impressed by their unity in the heats.

Hoping to be on point once again, they're on standby to perform,

We've just performed in the heats and we thought it went really well,

cos none of us went wrong

and we all just worked on what the judges told us to improve on.

That was really good! That was really... I'm speechless!

They wanted to see fire, and you guys brought some volcanoes,

I'm so proud of Wiked, we've all put hard work in,

and all that has paid off.

Wow, I was not expecting that from you guys.

The beginning was so strong, you came on with so much swagger

and I didn't know you had that.

You switched from so many different styles, from locking,

into house, back into swagger, and you played on different things,

you didn't just stick to one style which you're great at.

You did all the styles. Yeah.

Good comments from Lizzie. Turbo?

I'm going to get picky, a bit of criticism.

Some of you, when it came to that locking session,

someone was thrown. I know you do it to a fast track,

but I could see hands were probably not reaching where they need to be.

But I have to say, that beginning, I was biting my teeth

through my lips and my gums and my tongue!

And the roof of my mouth, and my dreads! Ooh!

That was some... Oooh!

Like a volcano - ka-bam!

Kenrick, finish us off, please.

For me, as a street dancer,

I think it's very important to show the versatility,

as a group and as a dancer,

and I feel Wiked today really showed how versatile they were

with that performance.

I would say definitely that was a competitive piece,

you knew the stakes, you knew what needed to be brought

to this round especially,

and you've achieved that very well. Well done.

So did it feel different in the semi-finals?

Was it harder compared to the earlier stages?

Yes, it was harder. We had to learn two different dances,

one rock'n'roll and one street dance - two different styles.

No matter what happens now, you got into the final nine,

you're semi-finalists, you must be proud.

We are proud of each other because of all the hard work we've put into it

and getting to this point has been amazing.

I hope we get into the finals but if we don't, it's OK -

we got to the semi-finals, that's good.

At the heats, Kenrick said this crew were grounded, tight and strong.

It was enough to get them in today's semi-final,

it's The Minions.

is that you could have done with more transitions.

You didn't use the whole stage and I know you guys can,

but you did brilliant in your choreography so I can't fault that,

just when you combine the two together,

you guys are just going to be brilliant,

It was amazing, we got the crowd cheering,

the judges were screaming and everything.

How does it feel to be in the semi-finals,

is it more pressure than the earlier stages?

A lot more pressure.

Even if we don't get through to the final

I'd be happy cos we've made it this far.

So guys, do you think you've done enough to get through to the final?

Yeah, definitely, we put 100% in, all meeting at the weekend,

training and trying our best.

So that's it, the crews have locked their last lock

and popped their last pop.
