0:00:550:00:59

Hello. I'm Andy.

0:01:150:01:17

I work in the dinosaur gallery of the National Museum.

0:01:170:01:20

Hatty's working on a brand-new display

0:01:200:01:23

all about dinosaurs that lived 145 million years ago.

0:01:230:01:26

She's asked me to bring this box, but said to be extra careful.

0:01:260:01:31

Hatty, I've got the box you asked for.

0:01:310:01:34

Don't worry. I've been very careful with it.

0:01:340:01:37

That's a small skeleton!

0:01:370:01:40

-I see you're admiring my Allosaurus.

-Allosaurus.

0:01:410:01:45

A magnificent little fellow.

0:01:450:01:48

It was one of the deadliest dinosaurs in North America.

0:01:480:01:51

Not as big as Tyrannosaurus rex but he had much longer arms,

0:01:510:01:56

deadly teeth and a jaw that opened very wide.

0:01:560:02:00

-Really? He seems a bit too small though.

-That's cos he's a baby,

0:02:010:02:06

but his mum and dad would have been almost ten metres long.

0:02:060:02:10

-That's about the same size as a lorry.

-He was quick, too.

0:02:100:02:15

Sounds like a deadly hunter.

0:02:150:02:17

He would have eaten anything he could sink his jagged teeth into.

0:02:170:02:21

What about the babies? What did they eat?

0:02:210:02:24

Now, that's where the box comes in.

0:02:240:02:27

# La-da-da. #

0:02:270:02:29

-Ready?

-Ready.

0:02:330:02:34

-A dragonfly.

-That's right.

0:02:370:02:40

Baby Allosaurus ate dragonflies, so I thought I'd put this little

0:02:400:02:44

beauty in that box to show what the baby Allosaurus ate.

0:02:440:02:48

I didn't realise dragonflies lived in the time of the dinosaurs.

0:02:510:02:55

They've been around for hundreds of millions of years.

0:02:550:02:58

The first dragonflies were so big that their wings were half a metre

0:02:580:03:03

-from tip to tip.

-So they really did look like giant flying dragons.

-Yes.

0:03:030:03:07

But by the time of Allosaurus they were small, just like this one...

0:03:070:03:13

-wherever it is.

-What's the matter?

-It's gone.

0:03:130:03:17

-Oh!

-Oh, no.

-It must be around here somewhere.

0:03:180:03:22

I'm not too sure, Hatty.

0:03:220:03:25

-Dragonfly!

-Hatty, I'm sorry. I think it's gone.

0:03:310:03:36

What are we going to do? The museum opens soon and I wanted to put

0:03:360:03:40

the dragonfly in the box to show what the baby Allosaurus ate.

0:03:400:03:44

-Don't worry, I'll sort it out.

-There's no time.

0:03:440:03:47

CLOCK CHIMES

0:03:470:03:48

SCREECHING

0:03:500:03:52

I'll make time.

0:03:540:03:56

Oh, thanks, Andy. I knew I could count on you.

0:03:560:04:00

Always.

0:04:000:04:02

Time to go on a dinosaur adventure!

0:04:030:04:07

ADVENTURE MUSIC PLAYS

0:04:110:04:13

Right. Waistcoat...

0:04:160:04:19

..check. Gizmo...

0:04:220:04:24

..check. Hat...

0:04:260:04:28

..check.

0:04:300:04:31

And last but not least, Hatty's backpack.

0:04:310:04:34

To the time of Allosaurus!

0:04:550:04:57

Ohh!

0:05:070:05:08

WHOOSHING AND WHIRRING

0:05:120:05:14

Oh!

0:05:260:05:28

DINOSAUR CROAKS

0:05:280:05:29

SQUAWKING

0:05:300:05:33

I've made it! I have travelled back in time 145 million years

0:05:330:05:38

to the time of Allosaurus,

0:05:380:05:41

but I can't see any dragonflies yet.

0:05:410:05:44

SQUAWKING

0:05:440:05:46

But I can see what could be the next best thing...

0:05:460:05:49

..the nests of baby Allosaurus.

0:05:510:05:54

Now this one, the babies have already left.

0:05:560:05:59

But this one looks in good shape.

0:05:590:06:01

And I think I can hear a sound coming from inside.

0:06:030:06:07

There's a hole.

0:06:080:06:09

Allosaurus eggs.

0:06:110:06:13

And I can hear the babies chirping from inside the eggs.

0:06:150:06:19

DINOSAUR GROANS SOFTLY

0:06:210:06:23

Here he comes!

0:06:250:06:26

DINOSAUR CHIRPS

0:06:340:06:35

I think he's calling for his mother.

0:06:390:06:42

Hang on. Where is its mother?

0:06:420:06:46

There's another one. Ohhh!

0:06:480:06:52

Ohhhhh!

0:06:530:06:56

DINOSAUR ROARS

0:06:570:07:00

That will be their mum. Just going to...

0:07:000:07:03

Oh! That was close.

0:07:070:07:09

SHE GROANS SOFTLY

0:07:120:07:14

Look at the size of those claws!

0:07:140:07:16

It's not going to take her long to get to her babies.

0:07:170:07:21

-DINOSAUR CHIRRUPS

-Here comes one now.

0:07:250:07:27

DINOSAUR GROANS SOFTLY

0:07:300:07:31

Oops! Ohh!

0:07:330:07:36

And they're all the brothers and sisters.

0:07:370:07:40

Hopefully they should be off to get some food soon.

0:07:400:07:44

But first, it looks like it's playtime.

0:07:440:07:47

THEY CROAK

0:07:480:07:50

What's that one spotted?

0:08:030:08:05

BUZZING

0:08:050:08:07

Two hungry Ornitholestes.

0:08:070:08:10

I think they might be after the babies.

0:08:100:08:12

I need to get the mum's attention.

0:08:120:08:15

SHE GROANS

0:08:210:08:22

It worked.

0:08:220:08:24

SHE ROARS

0:08:270:08:29

She scared them away.

0:08:300:08:32

SHE ROARS

0:08:340:08:36

Right. I'm going to follow them. They might lead me to dragonflies.

0:08:380:08:43

THEY CHIRRUP

0:08:460:08:48

Oh! Looks like some more babies there hunting something.

0:08:530:08:58

BUZZING

0:08:580:09:00

Dragonflies!

0:09:000:09:03

They'll have to be quicker than that.

0:09:030:09:05

That one's a good jumper!

0:09:080:09:10

Oops!

0:09:110:09:13

HE CROAKS

0:09:140:09:15

But it looks like he's on the right side to catch dragonflies.

0:09:170:09:21

I'm going to join him.

0:09:210:09:22

This is a great place to catch a dragonfly - the area's full of them.

0:09:270:09:31

And I'm not the only one who's trying.

0:09:330:09:35

Look at these Pterosaurs!

0:09:350:09:38

Thirsty work catching dragonflies, isn't it? Oh, look!

0:09:410:09:46

There's your friend up there.

0:09:460:09:48

HE CROAKS

0:09:480:09:50

The early Pterosaur catches the dragonfly.

0:09:510:09:54

Well done.

0:10:040:10:06

HE CROAKS

0:10:060:10:07

Now I need to get one, too, but I need mine alive.

0:10:070:10:11

Right.

0:10:110:10:12

There are hundreds of them.

0:10:180:10:20

Gently does it.

0:10:350:10:37

Got it.

0:10:390:10:41

Listen to its wings.

0:10:450:10:46

It sounds like a drill.

0:10:470:10:49

WINGS THRUM

0:10:490:10:51

There we go.

0:10:520:10:53

This bug box will keep it safe as long as I don't move the lid.

0:10:530:10:57

CLOCK CHIMES

0:10:590:11:01

The clock.

0:11:010:11:03

I have just enough time to get back to the museum before it opens.

0:11:030:11:07

DINOSAUR GROWLS

0:11:130:11:15

He's behind me, isn't he?

0:11:190:11:21

Oh!

0:11:230:11:25

DINOSAUR RUMBLES

0:11:280:11:30

What am I going to do?

0:11:300:11:31

Think.

0:11:330:11:35

Hatty's backpack!

0:11:370:11:38

Mosquito spray?

0:11:390:11:41

How is this going to help me?

0:11:410:11:44

DINOSAUR RUMBLES

0:11:440:11:45

Oh! It stinks.

0:11:480:11:49

I've got an idea.

0:11:530:11:54

DINOSAUR GROWLS

0:11:560:11:58

That smell should put her off. It worked!

0:11:580:12:02

Time to head back!

0:12:060:12:09

Oh!

0:12:130:12:16

CLOCK CHIMES

0:12:160:12:18

EXCITED CHATTER

0:12:400:12:43

Hurry along, now.

0:12:460:12:47

Ohhhh!

0:12:510:12:52

This is the skeleton of a baby Allosaurus,

0:12:560:12:59

a cute critter that probably fed on a whole range of little creatures,

0:12:590:13:04

including some that haven't changed in millions of years,

0:13:040:13:09

like dragonflies.

0:13:090:13:10

When he grew up, he would have been the largest

0:13:100:13:13

and most terrifying hunter of his day.

0:13:130:13:16

You can say that again.

0:13:160:13:18

Thanks, Andy. I don't know how you found that dragonfly so quickly.

0:13:180:13:22

If we were able to go back in time,

0:13:220:13:24

that's exactly what it would have looked like.

0:13:240:13:28

Shhhh! See you next time.
