0:00:560:01:00

Hello, I'm Andy.

0:01:150:01:16

I work here in the dinosaur gallery of the National Museum.

0:01:160:01:20

Hatty, our dinosaur expert, is working on a brand new display today

0:01:200:01:24

all about life in the time of Tyrannosaurus rex.

0:01:240:01:26

My favourite dinosaur!

0:01:260:01:28

I don't know why she wants a CD, but I'm sure we'll find out.

0:01:280:01:31

That looks good.

0:01:390:01:40

I love a display with a Tyrannosaurus rex on it.

0:01:400:01:44

Hmm... I wonder what this does.

0:01:440:01:47

Ah, there you are!

0:01:470:01:48

Sounds like Hatty.

0:01:480:01:50

That's because it is Hatty. I'm right here.

0:01:500:01:54

Whoa! Sorry, Hatty, I'm a bit jumpy today. Hatty?

0:01:540:01:58

-Did you bring that CD I asked for?

-Yeah.

0:01:580:02:00

I thought you were the button.

0:02:000:02:03

-What's on it?

-Let me show you.

0:02:040:02:06

Now, press the button.

0:02:090:02:10

T-REX ROARS

0:02:110:02:13

A Tyrannosaurus rex!

0:02:130:02:15

Not a real Tyrannosaurs rex, of course,

0:02:150:02:17

because no-one was alive to hear her, let alone record her.

0:02:170:02:21

But, I think it's probably pretty close.

0:02:210:02:24

I made it by mixing the trumpet of an elephant and the bark of a dog.

0:02:240:02:27

-Pretty good, don't you think?

-It sounds great!

0:02:270:02:30

Scientists think that dinosaurs made all sorts of peculiar sounds.

0:02:300:02:34

The fossils of some dinosaurs,

0:02:340:02:36

like this Lambeosaurus, for instance,

0:02:360:02:38

show that they had crests on top of their heads.

0:02:380:02:40

These crests would fill with air when the dinosaur breathed in.

0:02:400:02:44

If they wanted to make a sound,

0:02:440:02:46

they'd just push the air back out again.

0:02:460:02:48

Hoooooo!

0:02:480:02:50

Like a trombone! Wooo!

0:02:500:02:53

Exactly! You see, many dinosaurs lived in groups.

0:02:530:02:56

And animals that live in groups, like monkeys or lions,

0:02:560:02:59

need to make noises that the rest of the group can hear.

0:02:590:03:03

-Like cries for help.

-Or, noises to scare off an attacker.

0:03:030:03:06

Or, warning signs when danger is coming.

0:03:060:03:08

Or, in the case of Tyrannosaurus rex,

0:03:080:03:11

to show who's boss.

0:03:110:03:12

Because T-rex was definitely the boss in his neighbourhood.

0:03:120:03:15

ROARING

0:03:150:03:18

Sorry, Hatty, you surprised me again.

0:03:180:03:20

That's all right, I should've warned you.

0:03:200:03:23

MUFFLED ROARS

0:03:240:03:27

Must have got scratched.

0:03:270:03:28

It has! There's no way it's going to work now and the museum opens soon.

0:03:310:03:36

You could record my voice, I could roar.

0:03:360:03:39

ROOAAAR!

0:03:390:03:42

I think we'll need something else. Uh...

0:03:420:03:45

maybe I could go to the zoo and try to record another elephant, or...

0:03:450:03:50

Erm!

0:03:500:03:51

-Don't worry, Hatty, I'll sort it out.

-But there's no time.

0:03:510:03:56

BELL CHIMES

0:03:560:03:57

CUCKOO CLOCK SQUAWKS

0:04:010:04:03

I'll make time.

0:04:080:04:09

-Thanks, Andy, I knew I could count on you.

-Oh, always.

0:04:110:04:15

You know what this means, time to go on a dinosaur adventure!

0:04:170:04:21

Right, waistcoat.

0:04:310:04:33

Gizmo. Hat.

0:04:340:04:36

And last but not least, Hatty's backpack.

0:04:360:04:39

To the time of Tyrannosaurus rex!

0:04:550:04:58

CLOCK CHIMES

0:04:580:05:00

DINOSAURS GRUNT

0:05:270:05:29

I've made it!

0:05:320:05:34

I travelled back in time 65 million years

0:05:340:05:37

to the time of Tyrannosaurus rex.

0:05:370:05:39

Now, all I need to do is find a T-rex,

0:05:390:05:42

and record its incredible roar on my gizmo.

0:05:420:05:45

DINOSAUR ROARS

0:05:450:05:47

What was that?

0:05:470:05:48

T-REX ROARS

0:05:540:05:57

It's a T-rex!

0:05:570:05:59

T-REX ROARS

0:06:000:06:01

It's quite far away.

0:06:020:06:04

But, I can still hear it.

0:06:050:06:07

T-REX ROARS

0:06:110:06:12

T-REX ROARS

0:06:150:06:17

Oh, it's far too quiet.

0:06:230:06:26

I'm going to need to get closer.

0:06:260:06:27

Was that...that sounded close.

0:06:290:06:33

I think it might be coming from over there.

0:06:330:06:36

DINOSAUR ROARS

0:06:360:06:37

It's a group of Anatotitans.

0:06:550:06:57

It says here that they're plant eaters.

0:06:590:07:02

I can't see much plant life around here.

0:07:020:07:06

All there is is lots of ash from the volcanoes.

0:07:060:07:08

It also says that

0:07:120:07:13

they could have been a favourite food of the T-rex.

0:07:130:07:18

In that case, I'll stick with them in case one turns up and roars.

0:07:180:07:24

Yeah, a bit like that, only a lot louder.

0:07:240:07:26

This is more like it.

0:07:350:07:37

Anatotitans used to live in areas where there was lots of water,

0:07:390:07:43

just like this.

0:07:430:07:44

And, with lots of delicious green leaves to eat.

0:07:490:07:52

DINOSAUR ROARS

0:07:550:07:56

What was that?

0:07:560:07:57

It's not a huge Tyrannosaurus rex, but it is a huge pterosaur.

0:07:580:08:02

It's a Quetzalcoatlus.

0:08:030:08:06

I think he's coming in to land.

0:08:060:08:08

Oh, not before he's had some lunch, though.

0:08:080:08:11

Look at that! It's enormous!

0:08:130:08:16

Those wings must be about 10 meters from tip to tip.

0:08:190:08:22

Easily the largest flying animal ever.

0:08:220:08:25

DINOSAUR ROARS

0:08:310:08:33

This mist is getting thicker.

0:08:450:08:47

Come on, T-rex, where are you? Uh...what's that?

0:08:470:08:52

I hope I'm going the right way. Hmm...

0:08:520:08:56

I think I'm close.

0:08:560:08:57

Oh! Ouch!

0:08:590:09:01

Who put that there?

0:09:020:09:03

Oh, what's this?

0:09:040:09:06

OK, I'm going to sit on this rock till the mist clears.

0:09:060:09:10

Ah...well, this rock feels like it's moving.

0:09:100:09:12

What's that noise? I'm obviously hungrier than I thought.

0:09:140:09:18

Ah, the mist has cleared, I can see things now.

0:09:180:09:22

Like that T-rex I was after.

0:09:220:09:23

Oh!

0:09:260:09:29

T-rex! Two of them. And they're both asleep.

0:09:290:09:33

All I have to do is wake them up, get them to roar at me,

0:09:350:09:38

I can record it on my gizmo, then run back to the clock.

0:09:380:09:41

Right...

0:09:410:09:43

How do you wake a T-rex up?

0:09:450:09:47

Umm...

0:09:470:09:48

Ooh-ee!

0:09:500:09:52

HE WHISTLES

0:09:520:09:53

Wakey, wakey!

0:09:530:09:54

-HE CLAPS

-Come on now, up you get!

0:09:550:09:58

Umm... UP! Get up! Wake up!

0:09:590:10:03

What am I going to do? This isn't working.

0:10:040:10:06

Oh!

0:10:060:10:07

ROCK RICOCHETS

0:10:070:10:10

All right, that's what we're talking about. I just need to...

0:10:150:10:19

Well, where are you going? Now, if one of you could just...

0:10:190:10:24

T-REX ROARS

0:10:240:10:26

OK.

0:10:280:10:30

I think I've got it.

0:10:300:10:32

You can stop now.

0:10:320:10:33

I better go! Whoa!

0:10:380:10:41

I think I've lost them.

0:10:450:10:47

Oh, no! How did they get there?

0:10:530:10:56

They must have overtaken me.

0:10:580:11:00

How am I going to get past them to the clock?

0:11:000:11:04

CLOCK CHIMES

0:11:040:11:05

The museum, it's going to open soon.

0:11:050:11:08

Um...

0:11:080:11:09

Hatty's backpack. It's always full of useful things.

0:11:140:11:17

T-REX ROARS

0:11:170:11:19

A rescue flare? Who's going to help me here?

0:11:210:11:25

There's not going to be anybody around here to rescue me

0:11:250:11:28

for the next 65 million years!

0:11:280:11:30

Um...

0:11:300:11:31

Unless...

0:11:330:11:34

Yes, it's working.

0:11:380:11:40

They're distracted by the smoke.

0:11:400:11:42

All right, here I go!

0:11:420:11:44

Time to head back! Whoa!

0:11:450:11:47

T-REX GRUNTS

0:11:480:11:49

Whoa!

0:11:530:11:54

CLOCK CHIMES

0:11:560:11:58

CLOCK CHIMES

0:12:290:12:31

Almost there, almost there.

0:12:350:12:36

All right, hurry along now.

0:12:400:12:42

Done!

0:12:430:12:44

We don't want to turn into dinosaurs ourselves, do we?

0:12:450:12:49

Nobody knows for sure, but we think that dinosaurs

0:12:550:12:58

probably made lots of different sounds, just like modern animals do.

0:12:580:13:02

Although, a little bit scarier.

0:13:020:13:04

If Andy presses that red button you should hear what I think

0:13:040:13:09

a Tyrannosaurus rex sounded like 65 million years ago.

0:13:090:13:13

T-REX ROARS

0:13:170:13:20

T-REX ROARS

0:13:210:13:23

Thanks, Andy.

0:13:250:13:26

I don't know how you did it, but those roars sounds so realistic.

0:13:260:13:30

-It's almost as if you were right there with one.

-Yeah.

0:13:300:13:33

Shh! See you next time!
