Hi, I'm Andy. I work here at Safari World.

It's the biggest safari park on the entire planet.

We've got lots of baby animals here too.

I'm just off to the control room to meet our newest arrival.

It's a rescued baby bird called a shoebill.

Jen's been looking after the shoebill chick

since it arrived this morning. I can't wait to meet it!

-CRACKLING

-Come in, Andy. Mr Hammond here.

-Please could you come to the Jungle Den?

Hm! I wonder what Mr Hammond wants?

Oh, well. I'll have to meet the chick later.

Gives me a good chance to look up shoebills

in my animal encyclopaedia.

Ah! Look at the size of their beaks! They're enormous!

And it says here that shoebills come from the swamps of Zambia in Africa.

Oh, and they like to stand really still so nothing can see them.

Hey, you'll never guess who's coming to visit the shoebill chick today?

It's the shoebill chick - I don't think it's very happy.

It won't drink anything.

I've tried giving it water in a cup, a bowl, a saucer. Nothing's working.

Hm. Let me have a look in my encyclopaedia to find out how

shoebill chicks drink in the wild. No, there's nothing here.

Well, we can't have the President of Zambia seeing an unhappy chick!

I wonder if he knows where the swamp is? Maybe he goes there for a drink.

It says here that African hunting dogs live in packs.

So there must be some more around here somewhere.

I think I'll shrink down to their size

so I can fit right in with the pack.

Then I can follow them when they go looking for water.

To the size of a hunting dog puppy.

These pups certainly know how to have fun! Oh! They're off!

The dogs need water to cool down in this heat,

and where there's water, hopefully, there'll be shoebills.

Shoebills' beaks are huge.

They're like...well, like giant shoes.

Whoa! This one's not so steady on its feet.

It must only be a few days old. Uh-oh! The adult's coming.

Shoebills don't like to be disturbed,

especially when they have chicks.

I think I'd better keep my distance.

I think the adult's spotted me!

I know - I'll be a shoebill statue and, hopefully, it won't see me.

It's working!

It's drinking! But I still don't know how the chick drinks.

Jen, I've just seen an adult shoebill give a chick

-some water in the wild!

-Oh, that's great news!

Our chick is really thirsty now. So how does it do it?

Well, take a look at this recording.

The parents use their beaks to give the chicks a drink,

so you need to find something that looks like an adult

-shoebill's beak and then fill it with water.

-Right.

I'll have a look round for something that fits the bill...or the beak.
