Hello, and welcome to my Secret Hideout. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
I don't know what's going on today, but there are | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
loads of spiders in my hideout, like this spider. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
His name's Goldie. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
He's a golden orb. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
He's a beauty, isn't he? | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Some people get the heebie-jeebies when it come to spiders, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
mainly because of their spooky webs, and hairy legs, and their many eyes. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
But I love spiders! | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Spiders are often very small, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
but they have to catch prey that are a lot larger than they are, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
and get away from animals trying to eat them up, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
so they need lots of tricks up those eight sleeves. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Some have big fangs, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
some have really sticky webs, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
and some kick spiky hairs off their body to keep animals away. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
There's another spider that definitely belongs in my hideout, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
because it loves to hide, especially in tunnels. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
It'll stay in the tunnel and then it'll jump out in a surprise attack. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
The question is, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
are you brave enough to meet it? | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Trap-door spiders hide in little tunnels, behind trap doors, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32
and if they feel anything small walking past, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
like a beetle, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
they jump out to grab it. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
And did you know that there's a spider that's just like a cowboy? | 0:01:38 | 0:01:43
Yee-haw! | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
I'm a cowboy spider! Yee-haw! | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
It's called a bolas spider, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
and while it stays pretty hidden during the day, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
at night it dangles a long line of sticky web and swings it around | 0:01:54 | 0:01:59
to lasso and catch passing moths. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Isn't that amazing? | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Now we're going to do something really cool. Ready? | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
This is one of my all-time favourite spiders. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
It's a tarantula. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
It looks like it's walking along the bottom of the screen - look! | 0:02:14 | 0:02:19
Join me next time for another adventure, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
