Hello, I'm Andy, and I work here at Pickles' Animal Park.

It's my job to look after all the animals,

and today, it's quite chilly,

so I'm making sure that the animals are nice and warm.

Like this little guy.

Hey, come on, Andy, I'm trying to play a game here!

This looks like a good hiding place!

Oh, no, I can't hide there. Urgh!

This is Forrest the ferret. Now, he's fabulously furry, so he's OK.

But not all animals have fur to keep them warm,

so let's go and check on some more. Come on.

Right, what to do today?

I've got to clean me shell and... Oh, oh, there's Andy. Hello, Andy!

This is Tilda. She's a tortoise. Isn't that right, Tilda?

Tortoise with a capital T, Andy!

I'm just checking to make sure she's nice and warm.

In her home here, she has special heated lamps that we've put in

to help with that. Are you warm?

It's like the Caribbean, Andy!

Now, some tortoises hibernate,

which means they build nests out of leaves or twigs,

make sure they're nice and warm,

then they sleep for months on end until winter is over.

Imagine that - sleeping for months and months,

only waking up for a quick snack, then straight back to sleep again!

Oh, it's a hard life!

Wow, what are you making here?

This is my brand new invention.

My Gloriously Groovy Gliding Gadget.

Brilliant! What does it do?

-Well, you know how cats love climbing trees?

-Yeah.

Well, we're not so keen on falling out of them.

So, I thought that if I wore these special wings,

then if I did fall, I could just glide gently to the ground.

Good idea, Kip!

Thanks. Now all I need to do is test it.

So what have you been doing?

Me? I've just been to see Tilda the tortoise,

to make sure she has enough leaves for when she starts hibernating.

Hibernating? What's that?

Hibernating, Kip,

is what some animals do when the weather gets cold.

They slow down their breathing...

ANDY BREATHES SLOWLY

They slow down their heartbeat...

HE IMITATES HEARTBEAT

And then they stay completely still until it gets warm again.

Oh, oh, oh! Well, it sounds like they're having a nap.

KIP YAWNS

Well, it's kind of like napping,

but it's napping that lasts for months and months.

Wow! Well, that's nothing like a cat-nap, then.

Well, that's because cats don't hibernate.

But bears do, and bats do,

-and there's even one type of butterfly that hibernates!

-Really?

Yep! High up in the beautiful green mountains of Mexico,

-there are millions and millions of monarch butterflies.

-Wow!

There are so many of them, Kip, that it looks like the forest

is covered in a great big butterfly blanket!

Wow, I'd love to see that! That sounds amazing!

Well, in that case...

BOTH: It's time to go on a wild adventure!

We get to see monarch butterflies hibernating!

Yeah, and we can test out my Gloriously Groovy Gliding Gadget!

So, where to, Andy?

The mighty mountains of Mexico!

That's where the monarchs meet up in their millions!

-Well, then, Mexico, here we come! Go, CatNav, go!

-Whoa!

Going doooown!

Ooh, it is really cold!

Oh. Wow! Look at that mist ahead!

Andy, are you there?

Yes, I'm here, Kip. I just can't see anything!

Oh! That's better.

Right, come on then, Kip. Let's land.

It's kind of spooky, isn't it?

Yeah, it is a bit.

But it is the last day of winter here,

so the sun should come out any time soon.

I've never seen leaves like those before!

-And I've climbed lots of trees!

-They're not leaves, Kip!

They're millions of butterflies!

Wow! And they've all been asleep for four months

throughout the Mexican winter.

And when the sun comes out, they'll all fly around the forest.

Come on, let's go. I want to get a good spot so we can watch them.

You know what? All this talk of sleep is making me very tired.

Oh, I think I might just have a little nap.

Wow! Kip must have been really tired. Oh, well.

I'll have to go on my own.

TREES CREAK

Isn't this incredible?!

The forest is so full of sleeping monarch butterflies,

you can hardly see the trees!

Wow!

Not all the animals are fast asleep in the forest.

Because some of them get knocked off the trees by the clumsy birds.

Come on, let's take a closer look at these.

Imagine that! One minute, you're fast asleep in a tree,

dreaming of flowers, then the next minute, you're on the ground

crawling around, thinking, "How did I get here?"

And because they've been asleep for so long,

they have to shake their wings

really quickly to warm up. Like this.

Oh. It looks like they're in luck. The sun's coming out!

BIRDSONG

There we go, buddy!

-'Hey, Kip!'

-Oh... Yeah, Andy, I'm here.

I'm wide awake and ready for action!

'Take a look at the forest.'

All the butterflies are waking up and coming to life!

Oh, wow! I've never seen so many butterflies!

We really were just in time!

I need to get up close and fly like them.

Now, if I want to fly like a monarch butterfly,

I need to shrink down to the size of one.

Size of a monarch butterfly!

Perfect. Activate rocket pack!

All right. Time for take-off!

Wow. This is amazing!

The rocket jets are scaring the butterflies.

Time to fly like they do!

This is even more amazing than I could have ever imagined!

Look at me, I'm flying like a butterfly!

Oh, check these guys out!

You know how some of us like to have a glass of water in the morning?

Well, so do monarch butterflies!

Only, they haven't had a drink of water for four whole months!

Which is why they're so thirsty!

Drink up, buddy!

And now the sun's out, it's starting to get hotter,

which means they're all beginning to wake up.

And fill the air. Wow!

Look at this!

There are so many!

There are thousands of monarch butterflies flying everywhere.

Ooh.

In fact, there are so many, I can't really see where I'm going.

Excuse me,

can you see...? Woah!

Ah! Oh, no!

Now I'm soaking wet,

and I still can't see where I'm going.
