a special show for Blue Peter because it's our 5,000th episode,

it's also a very special day for Harry Potter,

which has hit a milestone because

worldwide, Harry Potter has sold 500 million books. Isn't that mad?

So, we are celebrating that today.

Today is the annual Harry Potter Book Night, which is very exciting.

Where fans gather all over the country to celebrate their love for

the books and we are doing just that.

So, please welcome Harry Potter illustrator Jonny!

-Hi.

It's a special day for you to be here and

these are your wonderful creations. These are absolutely beautiful!

-Yes, these are the recent children's editions of Harry Potter.

-Wow, it's

a big responsibility to be the illustrator for Harry Potter. Were

you a Harry Potter super fan, did you love the books?

No, I hadn't read any of the books!

I was a bit worried when I started that the Harry Potter fans

would see me as an impostor, like a Muggle...

-Yeah! Muggle!

-..who didn't really know his stuff.

-But because you're so good, they let you in?

-It kind of

helped in the end because I could

approach it having not known all those characters and

-other people's take on it.

-That's true.

And you are working on something really special for

our 5,000th episode, especially for us, aren't you?

-Yes.

-Yes, well, let's have a look at that

because you said you were coming along,

I thought you were going to bring paper and pen but you've

brought this massive tablet along, so talk to me about this.

Yes, I work digitally most of the

time. I used to work on paper but if you go wrong,

you have to start again. So, I started working digitally...

way through the images and save them.

You can build up the image. Here, I thought Harry

-looked a bit young so I moved his glasses up.

Interesting that you do Harry first and then you do the owl, Hedwig.

I thought I'd better get Harry right first.

Sure that's quite important, I can see why you thought that.

I wanted him to be like

when he first started at Hogwarts, so he's quite young.

And I used to forget his scar a lot, so I had to put on a

Post-it note saying, "scar," so I never forgot his scar.

-As I work through, I can sort of make...

and I just gradually work through until I get a finished image -

They are absolutely beautiful, your designs. But that one, as great as

it is, it's not quite finished yet, is it?

But not just any old badge -

our brand-new mystery badge is going to go

on Harry Potter, which is very cool.

So, do you think you can create that in the next sort of ten mins or so?

-Yes, I'm going to paint quickly.

-Yes, you get on with that, Jonny and

while you do that, it wouldn't be the 5,000th episode without an

amazing challenge. Here's one that

took me 30 metres above the River Thames.

Today, I'm at the River Thames in London to meet a rather old girl.

She has certainly been through the

wars and today she has got me to deal with.

I'm heading on board HMS Belfast,

once a proud Royal Navy warship that took

part in some of the greatest missions of the Second World War.

She is now moored in London and attracts hundreds of thousands of

visitors every year. Being the oldest surviving World War II

cruiser in Europe, it's really important that this piece of history

is kept in top condition.

I've been given the job of making sure

HMS Belfast is looking her best. And there's plenty to do. This ship is

massive! In fact, you could almost lie Big Ben's clock tower

alongside its decks - twice.

To find out more, I'm meeting Ian from the Imperial War Museum.

-Tell me why HMS Belfast is so special.

-She's a really historic

ship. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1939, just before the

Second World War started, so she

really did see a lot of service and she was in the Royal Navy

until the mid-1960s.

-Amazing that she is still standing.

-Absolutely.

-And it must be

-quite difficult to keep her in good condition.

-Yes!

-How

do you do that?

There are an awful lot of tasks we

need to do to keep her shipshape. Perhaps we can have a look and do

-some of it now?

-I'd love to.

I'm going 30 metres above the water to change the halyards,

otherwise known as the ropes that hold the ship's flags.

I'm going to need some hi vis, a hard hat and a

-man called Dave.

-Right, then, up you come.

Here we go.

Already feels quite a long way up and we

haven't gone anywhere yet. Don't look down! Don't look down. Oww!

Watch your head.

I'm glad I had a helmet on.

-A great view up here.

-All right, Lindsey. Come up.

Go, go, go.

I've got to keep climbing but I'm only halfway and now it's getting a

bit scary. Oh, I don't want to look down!

OK, well, this is nuts.

Amazing. I've made it

to the top. I guess it's time to relax and take in the view, right?

-We're not going out over there?

-That's it.

-Stop it!

-That's where we're going.

No, stop it. What?

OK... Not only am I

30 metres up the mast, I've now got to hang off the side.

I thought this was going to be a bit of a laugh.

-It's actually quite intense.

-Start climbing out, put

-your feet out onto that white beam.

-On the white beam?

I thought that there would be

-a platform.

-There's no platform.

-A cafe, a bench!

I feel like I could fall off this.

-Ah!

-A little bit higher.

-Higher?

-Little bit closer.

-Oh, my gosh.

-There you go, we're good there.

-OK, don't panic. Yep,

-that is a long way down.

-That's it. There you go.

-I finally made it out

onto the mast, time to get on with the job at hand. First, we bring up

the new rope and then I need to attach a pulley.

-Yes!

-OK...that's brilliant.

This is like an extreme Blue Peter make, isn't it?

I'm a bit more nervous than I would be in the studio.

And what better way to test the new halyards than by raising the

Blue Peter flag. Whoo!

Look at this. Dun, dun, dun-ah! Yes!

I think that's what you call a job well done.

So, there you have it, HMS Belfast is looking shipshape.
