Hello. I'm Peter. Have you had a good day today?

0:26:070:26:11

Fantastic. I hope that you're smiling.

0:26:110:26:14

I'm smiling because I'm wearing my fruit hat.

0:26:140:26:18

Am I allowed to wear the fruit hat whilst I tell the bedtime story?

0:26:180:26:22

Ohhh.

0:26:230:26:24

I love my fruit hat.

0:26:260:26:28

Tonight's bedtime story is about one very, very happy person

0:26:280:26:32

and her three neighbours who want to be happy too.

0:26:320:26:36

It's called Happiness is a Watermelon on Your Head

0:26:360:26:39

and it's by Stella Dries and Daniel Hahn.

0:26:390:26:44

I hope you're sitting comfortably.

0:26:440:26:46

At the end of the village, behind a green door

0:26:460:26:50

lived happy Miss Jolly with Melvin, her boar.

0:26:500:26:54

Each morning, she'd sit in her tree, playing a song on her cello,

0:26:540:26:58

whilst Melvin sang sweetly along.

0:26:580:27:02

"What makes her so happy?

0:27:020:27:04

"We really must learn," cried her neighbours,

0:27:040:27:08

Miss Whimper, Miss Grouch and Miss Stern.

0:27:080:27:10

"It's awful being miserable, day after day.

0:27:100:27:13

"Let's find out her secret. There must be a way."

0:27:130:27:18

The very next day, what a sight met their eye.

0:27:180:27:21

It's happy Miss Jolly, just frolicking by,

0:27:210:27:24

with a smile on her face and, "Good morning," she said,

0:27:240:27:28

with a skip in her step and a fruit on her head.

0:27:280:27:33

"That's it," cried Miss Stern,

0:27:330:27:36

"That's the trick. It's so clever.

0:27:360:27:39

"We need hats made of food. We'll be happy forever."

0:27:390:27:43

So they ran to her kitchen and rummaged about

0:27:430:27:47

for a nice bunch of radishes, cauliflower, trout.

0:27:470:27:50

Then they strapped them all on,

0:27:500:27:53

tied them fast, pinned them down

0:27:530:27:55

and stepped out delighted to dazzle the town.

0:27:550:27:59

Such beautiful hats, what a sight, what a show.

0:27:590:28:03

Did those hats make them happy now?

0:28:030:28:05

No.

0:28:050:28:07

So, they tried clocks, they tried pots,

0:28:070:28:11

they tried forks, they tried twigs,

0:28:110:28:13

fantastical whatsits and thingamajigs.

0:28:130:28:16

Their hats were ingenious, remarkable, mad.

0:28:160:28:20

But how were the women?

0:28:200:28:22

Still dreadfully sad.

0:28:220:28:24

Nothing worked. "Try the cello," said one. "Climb the tree.

0:28:240:28:29

"Maybe that's why Miss Jolly's more happy than me."

0:28:290:28:33

"That's it," cried her friends

0:28:330:28:35

and began their assent, higher and higher and higher they went.

0:28:350:28:39

But like four large, ripe fruits, so heavy and round,

0:28:390:28:43

they all, with the cello, thumped back to the ground.

0:28:430:28:47

"But wait!" cried Miss Grouch, "I've the best idea yet.

0:28:490:28:53

"Maybe being happy is having a pet."

0:28:530:28:57

Miss Jolly has Melvin, you know, what a bore.

0:28:570:29:01

"We will have birds," said Miss Whimper, "and monkeys galore."

0:29:010:29:06

"Something green," said Miss Stern. "Something long, something small."

0:29:060:29:11

And they did.

0:29:110:29:12

And what happened then?

0:29:120:29:14

Nothing at all.

0:29:140:29:17

So, that's it. They gave up. What else could they do?

0:29:170:29:20

They were sadder than ever. Their pets were sad too.

0:29:200:29:24

As they dragged themselves homeward in gloom and despair,

0:29:240:29:28

a giant green something came flying through the air.

0:29:280:29:32

It brushed past the tip of a rocking-horse hat,

0:29:320:29:35

as it whizzed through the air and came down with a splat.

0:29:350:29:40

A watermelon.

0:29:400:29:42

"Attack!" cried Miss J and she showered them with fruit

0:29:420:29:47

as she raced through the town with her boar in pursuit.

0:29:470:29:51

Soon the battle had spread to stupendous excess

0:29:510:29:55

and the whole of the town was a pink, sticky mess.

0:29:550:29:58

When the chaos was done, as they lay on the ground,

0:30:000:30:03

Miss Whimper, Miss Stern the Miss Grouch looked around.

0:30:030:30:07

They were covered with pips and with pulp and with goo.

0:30:070:30:11

One had juice in her hat. One had seeds in her shoe.

0:30:110:30:15

They lay there defeated, exhausted and sore,

0:30:150:30:19

those three sorry women and Melvin, the boar.

0:30:190:30:23

Then one of the women... But wait, what's this?

0:30:230:30:27

Could that be the trace of the smirk or a grin

0:30:270:30:30

or a smile on her face?

0:30:300:30:32

Yes!

0:30:320:30:35

All sticky and slimy and pink, what a sight.

0:30:350:30:39

They giggled and hooted and danced with delight.

0:30:390:30:42

"We did it! We did it!" Their sadness had passed.

0:30:420:30:46

They laughed and they laughed and were happy at last.

0:30:460:30:51

And that story was called Happiness is a Watermelon on Your Head.

0:30:530:30:57

Now it's time for you to give your favourite teddy a big cuddle

0:30:570:31:01

and get snuggled up in bed for a good sleep.

0:31:010:31:04

Can I put my fruit hat on again?

0:31:040:31:07

Oh, thank you.

0:31:070:31:09

See you soon for another bedtime story. Good night.

0:31:120:31:17

Um, can I wear this hat to bed, please?

0:31:170:31:21

Ohhh.
