Hello. I'm Ted. It's time for a story. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:10
Are you ready? You are? Great. I'm really looking forward | 0:30:10 | 0:30:14
to telling you all about someone rather naughty. | 0:30:14 | 0:30:18
It's one of my favourite stories and it's called Burglar Bill | 0:30:18 | 0:30:22
and it's by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
Burglar Bill lives by himself | 0:30:25 | 0:30:28
in a tall house full of stolen property. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
Every night, he has stolen fish and chips | 0:30:32 | 0:30:35
and a cup of stolen tea for supper. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:38
Then he swings a big stolen sack over his shoulder | 0:30:38 | 0:30:42
and goes off to work, stealing things. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:46
Every morning, Burglar Bill comes home from work | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
and has stolen toast and marmalade | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
and a cup of stolen coffee for breakfast. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:55
Then he goes upstairs and sleeps all day in a comfortable stolen bed. | 0:30:55 | 0:31:01
One night, Burglar Bill is working in a little street | 0:31:03 | 0:31:07
behind the police station. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:09
When he comes to the first house, | 0:31:09 | 0:31:11
he climbs in through the bathroom window and shines his torch around. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:17
"That's a nice toothbrush," says Burglar Bill, "I'll have that." | 0:31:17 | 0:31:23
And he puts it into his sack. When he comes to the second house, | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
he climbs in through the kitchen window and shines his torch around. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:32
"That's a nice tin of beans," says Burglar Bill, "I'll have that." | 0:31:32 | 0:31:36
And he puts it into his sack. When he comes to the third house, | 0:31:36 | 0:31:41
he climbs in through the bedroom window and shines his torch around. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:45
"That's a nice hat and coat and pair of trousers and socks | 0:31:45 | 0:31:49
"and shoes," says Burglar Bill, "I'll have them." | 0:31:49 | 0:31:52
And he puts them into his sack. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:54
When he comes to the 16th house, he stops. | 0:31:54 | 0:31:59
There, on the front step, is a big, brown box | 0:31:59 | 0:32:03
with little holes in it. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
"That's a nice big, brown box with little holes in it," | 0:32:06 | 0:32:10
says Burglar Bill, "I'll have that." | 0:32:10 | 0:32:12
In the distance, the town hall clock strikes five. | 0:32:14 | 0:32:18
HE SIGHS | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
"Time to stop work," says Burglar Bill. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:24
He swings the sack over his shoulder, picks up the box | 0:32:24 | 0:32:28
and goes home to have breakfast. | 0:32:28 | 0:32:31
After breakfast, Burglar Bill plays with his cat by the fire. | 0:32:31 | 0:32:36
Suddenly, he hears a noise. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:38
CRYING | 0:32:38 | 0:32:40
"Sounds like a police car," says Burglar Bill. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
But the noise is coming from the big, brown box | 0:32:43 | 0:32:47
and it is getting louder. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:50
"Sounds like TWO police cars," says Burglar Bill. | 0:32:50 | 0:32:53
He creeps up to the box and raises the lid. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:58
"Blow me down!" he says, "it ain't no police cars. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:03
"It's a...baby!" | 0:33:03 | 0:33:05
Burglar Bill puts the baby on the table. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:10
"What was you doing in that box, baby?" he says. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:13
But the baby only keeps on crying. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:17
"All alone," says Burglar Bill. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:20
He pats the baby's little hand. "An orphan." | 0:33:20 | 0:33:25
But the baby only keeps on crying. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
Then Burglar Bill says, "I know what you want. Grub." | 0:33:28 | 0:33:34
Burglar Bill gives an apple to the baby, but still the baby cries. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:40
He gives a slice of toast and marmalade to the baby, | 0:33:40 | 0:33:44
but still the baby cries. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:47
He gives a plate of beans and a cup of tea to the baby. | 0:33:47 | 0:33:51
The baby eats the beans, throws the cup of tea on the floor | 0:33:51 | 0:33:55
and starts to laugh. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:56
"That's better," says Burglar Bill, "I likes a few beans meself." | 0:33:58 | 0:34:04
Burglar Bill sits by the fire and wonders what to do. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:08
The baby is crying again. He gives the baby a football to play with. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:14
The baby throws the football at the cat and keeps on crying. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:19
He gives the baby a book to look at. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:22
The baby bites a hole in the book and keeps on crying. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:27
He sings a song and plays the piano to the baby. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:33
The baby cries louder than ever. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:35
He falls off the piano school and bangs his nose on the floor. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:40
The baby laughs and shouts. "Ha-ha-ha! Again!" | 0:34:40 | 0:34:45
"Again?" says Burglar Bill. He rubs his nose. | 0:34:46 | 0:34:50
"I didn't want to do it the first time." | 0:34:50 | 0:34:54
Burglar Bill bounces the baby on his knee. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:59
"So, you can talk," he says. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
"Say, 'Burglar Bill.'" | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
"Boglaboll," says the baby. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:08
Say, 'Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper,'" says Burglar Bill. | 0:35:08 | 0:35:13
"Boglaboll," says the baby. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:17
Suddenly, Burglar Bill feels his knee getting wet | 0:35:17 | 0:35:22
and smells a smell. "Poo!" he says. "I know what you want." | 0:35:22 | 0:35:28
"Poo," says the baby. | 0:35:29 | 0:35:32
Burglar Bill changes the baby's nappy. | 0:35:33 | 0:35:37
He doesn't have another one, so he uses an old bath towel instead. | 0:35:37 | 0:35:42
"Say, 'For he's a jolly good fellow for changing my nappy,'" | 0:35:42 | 0:35:46
says Burglar Bill. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:48
Burglar Bill plays with the baby and shows it round the house. | 0:35:48 | 0:35:53
He feeds it again, changes its nappy again, | 0:35:53 | 0:35:56
washes its clothes and hangs them on a line in the kitchen. | 0:35:56 | 0:36:01
When night comes, he takes the baby for a walk in the park. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:05
"Say, 'Run for it,' if you see anybody," says Burglar Bill. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:10
"Runfrit," the baby says. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:12
At 12 o'clock, Burglar Bill comes home, puts the baby to bed | 0:36:16 | 0:36:20
and goes to bed himself. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:22
Soon he's snoring softly... | 0:36:22 | 0:36:26
..and dreaming of his childhood days. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:34
Suddenly, he wakes up. | 0:36:34 | 0:36:36
Downstairs, there is a noise. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:38
It is a noise that Burglar Bill has heard before... | 0:36:38 | 0:36:42
..the noise of someone opening a window and climbing carefully in. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:51
"Blow me down," says Burglar Bill, "I'm being burgled!" | 0:36:51 | 0:36:56
Now, this is quite a long story and you'll have to wait to find out | 0:36:58 | 0:37:04
exactly what Burglar Bill finds downstairs. | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
I can tell you it's a very funny surprise, | 0:37:07 | 0:37:10
so don't forget to join me again tomorrow for the second part | 0:37:10 | 0:37:14
of Burglar Bill's story. | 0:37:14 | 0:37:16

Great. I hope you have happy dreams and I'll see you again tomorrow. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:26
Night-night. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:27 |
