24 groups have performed for our judges, and now we're down to 15.

Welcome to the first of the studio heats.

The pressure's on - only five groups can make it to the semi-final,

so prepare yourselves for some show-stopping performances...

..as today three groups take to the stage.

It's great to be back for the new series of Comic Relief Does Glee Club

and another perfect excuse to go looking for Britain's

top young performers, and it's all in aid of Red Nose Day.

AND, just because we weren't at the judges' auditions,

don't think we haven't been paying attention.

-I think your hair looks lovely, mate.

-What?

-I'm only joking!

I heard what you said.

Seriously, we have been blown away by the talent on offer this series.

Someone who has been there from the beginning,

travelled the length and breadth of the country,

-and much prettier than us two...

Well, I say people -

they're actually walking, talking masters of music -

it's our judges!

Ah, lovely, lovely judges.

Now, lads, you scrub up well, but, Carrie,

-you look positively radiant today.

-Oh, you look lovely, too.

Very kind of you. Are you excited about today's show?

Really excited. We have a lot of good talent.

Very exciting. OK, guys, if you'd like to make your way to your seats,

and whilst they do that, let's find out little bit more

about our perfect professionals.

They're the top coaches in the industry and have worked

with a host of stars from The Saturdays to Olly Murs,

it's the judges.

The reason I get up in the morning and go to work

is because I love seeing people transformed,

and when you sing, it does more than just help you feel good

about your voice, it does something for who you are.

My expectations this year are higher than ever.

I'm expecting people to come on to that stage and completely take over,

to know they're on TV, with a live audience - they have to entertain.

I hope to bring balance to the judging panel.

I hope to bring some empathy, some encouragement,

with some constructive critique.

I'm looking for bigger and better talent.

I want better choreography, better vocals and better charisma.

I want the whole package, so I want, basically, the impossible.

-That is why they're the judges, people, that is why.

-Absolutely.

Now for the important bit. 15 groups have made it through to the heats.

Today, three will battle it out for our experts,

who will be scoring them on vocal ability, creativity and performance.

All four judges will be giving marks out of 10 for each

of the disciplines, so there are plenty of points to be won,

and in the unlikely event of a tie,

head judge Carrie will decide who gets the medals.

The acts with the top five scores across the heats

will then compete in the live finals,

where it will be up for you at home to vote for your favourites.

And the winners will take home the fantastic

Comic Relief Does Glee Club 2013 trophy!

Right, let's find out how Naomi and the groups are getting on backstage.

Anyway, Excellar8, let's come to you first for a little chat.

What people at home might not know is that some of you like to sing

-to your animals, is that right? Who sings to the chickens?

-Me.

When I let them out in the morning I sing to them and they peck me.

-Nice. And, Alicia, you like to sing to your...

-Hamsters.

Yeah, they stay in their little houses and I really want them

to come out, so I can hold them, so I sing to them to come out.

-Any other pets?

-I've got a rabbit and a fish.

I don't really go out to my rabbit because it is always really cold

and I sing to my fish. I go, "Pop-pop-pop."

Over to L8. Your name suggests there are eight members in your group,

but there is actually a ninth member, I hear.

-Who's going to tell me about Philippe?

-I am.

This is Philippe, our make-up bag.

He's essential to our needs.

He holds everything, but it's very confidential.

-Yeah.

This will test my interview skills.

So, Philippe, who does your hair and make-up?

No? Are you cheesed off that the group's not called LS9?

It's not working, I can't shut him up.

Our groups arrived in Glasgow yesterday for the studio heats,

but has the pressure of meeting the competition

given them cause for concern,

or have they made some lifelong friends?

Let's see how they got on when they met for the first time.

When our first three glee clubs got together in Glasgow,

they were certainly up for making some noise.

ALL: We're LS8 and we're from Leeds!

-We're Excellar8 and we're from Stockport!

It was a chance to relax and get to know each other

before the big day in the studio and have some fun,

and maybe reveal some behind the scenes secrets

about their glee clubs.

-Well, we're twins and I'm the oldest...

Actually, no, one and a half.

-That doesn't make a difference.

-Yeah, it does.

-Can you play golf?

-No, I can't.

-No, can't play.

I've never been to Scotland before.

This is the first time.

Well we're all wearing dresses...

They're wearing skirts, I'm obviously wearing a dress.

I'm joking.

Our names altogether is Alercamjeniz-Hafija.

-It's made out of...

-Really?

"Al" for Alicia, "Er" for Erin,

"Cam" for Cameron, "Jeniz" is made of Jessica and Paniz.

Then "Hafija" is Harrison, Findlay and Jay.

Essential to our competition, he's always there.

Fantastic start. Let's see what the judges thought of that performance.

Carrie, what does this round do to highlight

the groups' singing ability?

With these particular groups, it's brilliant for us

cos it's one song and you have three groups

with totally different styles,

so we really get to see if they can translate that on to the same song.

OK, so, Excellar8, you are really cute as David said in the auditions.

You did the tightest singing today.

Really excellent, and for the youngest group

I'm really impressed with that, big salute.

LS8, your challenge was, can we carry the drama onto a pop song?

For me, you did, visually. Vocally, I'm not so sure, for me.

I think the guys were down too low on that low root note.

But OK, very good visually.

Diva8, you kept that kind of African rhythm.

Even though you were doing a pop song, you still kept it.

The tuning, pitchy in places, but for me, the rhythm,

that was the best rhythmical singing we had.

David, how do you compare those performances?

They were three very different performances. If the Chipmunks

and the Chipettes were human,

they would be Excellar8.

They're cute, they're sweet, they're like...

bright. LS8, to me, they're like a tight gang.

They attacked the song more than any other group

and I really like that. It's like you take the song and you give it

a good kicking. I enjoyed your performance of it.

Diva8, I think that you guys were, for me, very smooth vocally.

I agree with Carrie inasmuch as there were a few pitchy things

here and there, but your sound, you really blend well.

John, which acts did it for you there?

Again, different reasons.

Vocal blend, I would have to say Diva8 did it for me.

As far as stage presence,

it's you guys, Excellar8, that always do it for me.

You just have that natural charisma. I always watch you and just smile.

I have to say, for the tightness and the hard work -

and I can see everything - for that, it's you guys,

-all the time, it's LS8.

-Sisco, were you entertained?

-I was entertained.

And what I really liked about all three groups,

they prioritised the vocal.

The choreography wasn't too much. It wasn't overbearing

and I really enjoyed the interpretation of the songs,

-so well done to all three groups.

and all to play for. There's still one more challenge to go,

but before that, let's take a look at the scoreboard after Round 1.

Excellar8 are leading the way with 81 points.

LS8 have 73 points

and Diva8 are just ahead of LS8 with 74 points.

But with 120 points available to each group in Round 2,

it could all change.

So, I'm here with all the 8s, who really did have

some lovely comments, didn't you, Excellar8?

-Yeah.

-Great stage presence, great charisma.

Carrie thought you were vocally the tightest group.

What do you think of those comments?

They're really, really good.

-We were dead happy when we got them.

-And the highest score?

Yeah, I didn't think we'd get the highest,

-but we did really well, yeah.

-Excellent. Over to LS8.

Harry. They loved you. They thought you were really good visually.

They said you attacked the song.

David said you gave it a good kicking. Would you agree?

Well, we did work quite a lot on it,

and we gave it some sparkle...

So they thought that you kept your African rhythm,

lovely vocal blend. Has that given you confidence for the next round?

Definitely. I think we were a bit nervous

when we did our first performance,

but I think, cos we've now got, like -

we can do it, we've experienced it -

I think we're all really excited for the next performance.

David, should Excellar8 be proud of that performance?

Yeah, I think they should. They gave everything they had.

They looked like they were enjoying it.

There was the odd pitchy moment, but apart from that, to me,

their performance looked like it was them. It's really them.

Everything they do, they just do it as them.

And that, I love about them.

Fantastic.

John, how were the vocals?

You know what? You guys made the gear changes we talked about

in the auditions rounds.

I really love that. You went first gear, second gear, third gear,

and you kept me interested right throughout.

Cos it's not enough to be cute. And you know we put you through

because of your vocal and performance ability, so well done.

-Sisco, was the choreography enough there?

-It was.

Um, I felt that it was a little static in places.

But I think the song is such a beautiful song,

it doesn't need too much, you know, movement.

So I think you guys had a good balance with it.

I would have liked a bit more formations in the beginning.

But you guys are so adorable, that even if it is all wrong,

I will still be up for this band!

I think you guys are great,

and I think you should be really proud of that performance.

OK. Carrie, do you see Excellar8 as finalists?

I certainly think they could get through to our top five, for sure.

I really liked the whole piece as a performance piece.

You know, my expectation of a group that's this young,

is slightly lower.

But I have to say, you delivered vocals that are beautifully blended.

You've got a very young sound, beautifully together.

I always loved your soloists from the audition rounds.

You came forward a bit more today. That was lovely.

maybe, yeah, do more of what we're doing, but better.

Well, that is well said. I like that a lot.

I know you love them because you can check your make-up in them,

LS8 come to Glasgow with a bit of a reputation to uphold

from their first meeting with John.

I must say, that was, eh, refreshingly unique.

Something unusual. I didn't expect that.

And from the judges' auditions.

You, John, were brilliantly demented.

And the rest of you matched him.

You are terrifyingly brilliant.

But there was also some glowing praise from Carrie.

I loved it. I am thoroughly entertained.

Excellent. John, did they make that song their own?

No-one does musical theatre quite like you guys, no-one does it.

It was eccentric, it was full of drama,

-it was a winning performance.

Sisco, did you like that performance?

I loved it, I thought it was a very risky song choice, you know,

anything by Bjork is very hard to imitate or even try to sing

because she's so quirky, but you guys added such a great spin

to it and I loved the choreography, the concept, how quirky it was.

It was quite random as well, yet entertaining,

your vocals were on point.

I do want you to concentrate on your vocals a little bit more,

in a whole very enjoyable theatre production.

David, did that come all together for you?

Well, now for the truth, chaps. That was brilliant!

I loved the theatricality, I loved your acting,

I loved the dynamic range of the song from a whisper to a scream.

-Nobody does what you do as well as you do it.

-Wow! Nice one.

You can't do better than that, really.

And can I just say as well? This shirt is amazing.

Did you steal that from Sisco's wardrobe?

Are you feeling good about that?

And David was saying nobody does musical theatre

in the same way as you guys do it.

I mean, what do you think of the comments?

Well, from, like, the first round, we brought it back, like,

we were ourselves, we had all the energy and sparkle.

I'm lovin' all your facial expressions in there.

Could you maybe teach me how you did that?

Go on, show us those... you and Harry.

Go on, show us your facial expressions.

-I'm not even going to try that.

They are brilliant!

Now, our last act have a name that suggests

they might be a little bit difficult

if they don't get their water at the right temperature,

the chauffeur to pick them up on time

and just the right number of pink marshmallows, a bit like Sam.

Let's meet Diva8.

Diva8 made a big impression when they first performed for John.

Then they grabbed their place in today's heats,

really impressing the judges with their sound.

I love your sound. You have a beautiful African sound.

Lift the facial expressions, the movement, have a bit more conviction

to match the sound of your voices, because it's beautiful.

You've got nothing to be shy about.

So Diva8 were on their way to Glasgow, but have they listened

to what the judges said and are they ready to take the stage once again?

We've learnt how to perform more and work more as a group,

so we can look each other and use our faces and, yeah,

just how to convey to the audience how excited we feel

-about doing this.

-Yes, this is my surprised face!

-How does it feel now you're sitting in the studio?

-It's exciting.

I'm feeling a bunch of feelings - nervous, excited, happy I'm here.

-A whole mixture?

-Yeah.

-Have you seen any of the competition yet?

-ALL: Yeah.

-And what you make of their performance?

I think were all as good as each other

otherwise we wouldn't have made it to this place.

Well, that's true, isn't it?

You've all got this far, so you must all be very good.

-Are you looking forward to getting up there?

-Yeah.

-Showing them what you're made of?

-Definitely.

John, that hit was a massive hit for girl band TLC originally.

Do you like what the guys did with the Stooshe version?

Yeah, it's fantastic to see that you took the advice we gave you in

the audition rounds and you focused on your solos and you chose well.

It's great as well that you brought your body language and your

facial expressions to the party. That's what we were looking for.

I think we saw that today. Well done, girls.

APPLAUSE

Carrie, did you like the arrangement?

I thought the arrangement was good. I have to be honest,

in the audition rounds what I loved about you was your sound

and I didn't feel you quite were able to replicate that today.

There's something, I can't put my finger quite on it,

I don't know whether it's the nerves

but I feel like you've lowered your game just a little bit.

It was still good but I think everyone is coming today going,

"Right, we're got to raise our game,"

so you have to just push through.

-OK.

-All right, David, have they done enough to make the final,

-do you think?

-Well, let me tell you,

that's one of my favourite songs ever, ever, ever,

and when people do a favourite song ever, ever, ever,

then they're messing with your memories.

-You trampled on my memories and you made them look beautiful.

You made them sound wonderful. I loved it when you came in.

I loved your ensemble.

-I thought that that was a really fantastic version of it.

-Definitely.

I think you guys really listened to the arrangement of the music

and the choreography fitted it, so that's a really good thing and also

vocally you didn't interfere,

so well done, guys, I was really impressed.

opinions about your performance. What do you make to their comments?

Well, we're just happy with what we did

but we will take on board what they said, yeah.

And how was it, performing in front of this beautiful studio audience?

It was, we were kind of nervous

but once we performed it was actually really good.

-Do you want to do it again?

-Maybe, yeah.

-Not sure about that.
